Great food & very welcoming staff !

Such a great local pub / eatery! Sorry we didn’t photo our meals before tucking in. The homemade pea & mint soup, beef & Merlot pie, schnitzel, vegetarian Thai curry, Moroccan lamb casserole, burgers, fish & chips, goats cheese salad, sticky toffee pudding and plum strudel were absolutely delicious according to those in our party who chose them. Mixture of sides and ice cream for the youngsters all went down a treat!

Loved every minute of it! Excellent homemade food, welcoming service, nice traditional ambience.

Basically, the very unfriendly and rude young man on our arrival made me decide nit to stay. But, we were meeting our son and his family, and they arrived 5 minutes after us, so I reluctantly decided to stay. We were expecting Sunday Lunch, most likely my fault, then we got stuck with to be expected normal food that has not been freshly cooked on site. To summarise: failed miserably all round, ok for locals, but don't waste your time and money travelling to this venue, you will be dissapointed unless you like what defibately seems to be processed food.

Small menu, but great simple home made food. I had salmon this time, and a fantastic cheesecake. Its a classis old pub set up, not a fancy gastro restaurant. Lovely local ale as well.

Great little pub/ restaurant. Very welcoming and a wide selection of food available. Everything is fresh, we throughly enjoyed ourselves. The chicken schnitzel was amazing!! Lovely polite staff, we will be back soon. Thank you

Unusual to find a pub with Hungarian dishes on the menu. Well kept beers and dog friendly. Be aware that they don't open every day.

Another wonderful lunch with my sisters, brother and partners. We live in Beds, Essex and Bucks and this is a great central place to meet and eat. Food , service and value for money are all exceellent.

This little pub is the most treasured secret if you have not been there - everything about it is truly amazing - every dish is superbly cooked and chosen to be delicious such that you want to order everything but you can’t as the portions are substantial- you just have to keep going- very keenly priced for every pocket - atmosphere also perfect from the kindest and most sincere staff - if you don’t go you are missing out and when you do go you will kick yourself you didn’t go sooner !!!!!!!! Super trad Herts/Beds style pub. The food is awesome. Fantastic welcome from Roxana and her team. Great value. Dead easy to get too as well from M25 or A1

The food was fantastic with a really good selection of great dishes. If you are into your real ale then Dad had their own Black Horse stout which was excellent. The owner and bar staff were super friendly and accommodating. The dog loved lying in front of the fire and was spoiled with gravy bones. Could not recommend this pub enough.

Terrific value for money, lovely people and very welcoming to Ralph the cocker spaniel. We'll certainly return.

Beautiful little pub found by accident as the Premier Inn restaurant was shut, but so glad we did! Friendly, helpful staff, fresh food made to order and a varied menu. Lovely evening. Would definitely return of we were in the area again.

We have found a lovely secret pub that does great food . I would highly recommend the schnitzel . Landlady seemed lovely and service was great ! This is very hard to find these days .

Four of us visited for lunch and were very pleased by the limited but varied choice on the menu. Our meals turned out to be excellent quality including the delicious apple pancakes for pudding. One of our party had an allergy and nothing was too much trouble to find something suitable for her. Thanks Renata for a very enjoyable lunch with our friends.

It wasnt our first visit. Lovely Old little pub away from the main road. Great home made lunch with my friend. The salmon was delicious and looked great too. Sugar free apple pancake was a treat and went down really well. Nice space outside to enjoy the sunshine. Will return for sure.

We had a very disappointing visit for lunch. So I want to be fair and objective in my review. A long serving village pub. Victorian style but some parts older, in a back lane of the north part of the village. Clearly no passing trade but would seem to be the locals watering hole. We chose this pub for lunch from the lovely food photos on the Google Review. Our experience was nothing like that at all. Desperate in need of a face lift inside and outside. One real ale only (New Tricks Golden Ale from Green King) however we were told pub usually has two ales available but the pub locals only drink lager. To be fair the loos were very clean and lots of good parking. On arrival we were told the Hungarian Lady Owner was on holiday with The Chef but that food was available. We were given a scruffy menu board that is passed around the tables. School dinners menu at best. The few hot meals did not look inviting and as the Chef was away we thought go Baguette & Ploughman's that cannot be messed up Then the staff said no chef had turned up then shortly after that another chef had arrived. Our Bacon & Brie Cheese baguette arrived with half cooked bacon, lettuce and crisps - this went back as requested well cooked bacon when ordering. After a while it returned but after one bite was discarded with the cry "bacon is off or something" So we shared the Ploughman's. An uninspiring plate of bland shop bought bits and pieces for £12.50 Anyway we paid for the food and received the two drinks on the house with apologies. One table of three arrived having booked. They sat on a scruffy rear table and without a drink or food got up and left. What we wondered was how the photos of the food on the reviews made sense? Did they have the skills to serve what looked fantastic? Could they do Beef Wellington they claim? The staff tried, were friendly and apologetic so it's not their fault. Hospitality is a tough business but there is adequate opportunity with this pub to do better. Perhaps worth a visit after the Owners Holiday.

Proper local family run friendly pub. We stopped off to meet family after sitting their dog and were made very welcome. Proper ales here S well as reasonable menu. We didn't eat there

The pub is a traditional local pub with rustic decor. We visited because we couldn't check into out hotel and wanted some lunch. The staff and landlady were very friendly and the food was excellent and very good value. Will definitely be visiting again.

So glad we came here for Sunday Lunch today. The staff and especially the landlady couldn’t do enough for us. She described with a passion the dishes on the menu and recommended which ones my mum, who is a coeliac, could eat. The food was delicious, full of flavour and very good value. The pub had a lovely cheery atmosphere. We all enjoyed the whole experience. So good to meet someone who loves what she does and takes so much care and pride in every detail. Don’t hesitate to visit!

A hidden gem of a place! We only found it by searching Google as its off the beaten track when desperate for some lunch. Really great food (massive portions!) Plus very friendly service made it a winner.

Nice. Little old fashioned pub, bar staff and. Landlady very friendly, fair lunchtime trade, nice menu, good. Food. I believe it is. Popular in the evenings but we don't live near enough

This is home cooked food, freshly prepared, served with fresh veg or salad. Slightly cheaper too than the "Gourmet" pubs that serve food fresh from the freezer. Simply, eat this and your stomach will thank you

Not been to the black bull for some time but I was pleasantly surprised by a warm welcome and a lovely meal that we had although it was only a baguette it was really really nice I can thoroughly recommend it.

We visited the black horse restaurant last sunday @ early lunch (1pm) for someone’s recommendation and we had a wonderful time with my family. Absolutely lovely stuff , the owner is super friendly and welcoming , the food is amazing. There is vegetarian foods available too. Will visit them again very soon!5* food and stuff

Great food nice atmosphere for not alot of money

Beautiful village pub. The food here is incredible, we have eaten here many times and has been some of the best food we've ever had. All the food is very fresh and homemade on the premises. Great prices, friendly staff and lovely cosy atmosphere. We choose to come here every time over any of the other local pubs in the surrounding area. You won't be disappointed!

Nice traditional style food, our choice of smothered chicken and a Burger were not great sadly but hopefully other dishes are better......coffee was also weak and not hot.

Wonderful little pub found by searching Google maps. Food was excellent in choice and flavour, catering well for the vegetarians, fish lovers and children. Staff were welcoming and helpful and served with a smile to a demanding group of 9! We all enjoyed our main meals and desserts not least because they were homemade. Aim to have future family meet ups there.

Stunning food with a wonderful landlady who couldn't do enough to please. Let's support our local pubs especially post lockdown. We stay at the Premier Inn at South Mimms so thought we'd eat locally for a change and it was a real treat. Small but varied European menu which was delicious.

Lovely vegetarian pie with mushrooms and onions. Very friendly service and great atmosphere. Perfect for stop at the weekend after walk in South Mimms Wood.

Very nice little pub. Had a meeting most Monday Nights but due to Covid the Landlady has not been opening on that night, only on occasions when having a special do in the day.

We've been filming a TV series in this wonderful venue. The temperatures were soaring and the wonderful Renata kept us all hydrated with her fabulous soda drinks. What a wonderful woman and ambience. We'll miss you Renata.

The most incredible meal. Ordered the ploughman’s platter to share, more than enough for 5 of us and so fresh and tasty. Table ordered the fish and chips with calamari as well as duck, both unbelievable quality and so reasonably priced! Service was as friendly as it was fast. Immediately felt comfortable in Renata’s pub, similar to a gastropub with a family feel. Too much duck to finish with a sauce to die for and the fish was so soft and crispy. 100% will make this the main feature of every visit we make in future, could not recommend enough to anyone!

Generous portions, friendly staff and good outdoor space. The lovely landlady is most well coming and tried her best to accommodate our requests.

Warm and friendly service, independent feel, delicious homemade food and well kept cask beers.

Stayed in the Car Park overnight before a Charity Drive Around the M25. Quiet little pub, lovely Staff. Thank you Ladies. Hopefully see you next year.

A lovely, welcoming pub that feels like home! Food is freshly made and good value for money. Situated within countryside surroundings, with a spacious pub garden and a lot of parking space. The staff is nice and there are all sorts of social distancing measures in place. Definitely recommend!

A very tasty ploughman’s lunch with a cheeky side order of chips today. All the food I saw coming from the kitchen looked delicious. Fast and super friendly service in a beautiful country pub, at very reasonable prices. Cannot recommend highly enough, will definitely be returning to this hidden gem.

A hidden gem on Black Horse lane. I rarely review places due to not visiting independent businesses that often. This time we went to find one on a beautiful summers day and we were not let down! There was a tonne of parking available, the building is matching to its era and well kept, the food was amazing (by portion as well as flavour) and lastly, the staff were really polite that I felt more at home than just at a pub.

I rarely score a pub or restaurant 5 stars, but after 2 visits we really can’t fault The Black Horse! Very friendly welcome, lots of info on local real ale (£3.90 a pint) lots of COVID info wipe’s hand gel, screens etc. Ordered pint of real ale, pint of bottled coke, and a homemade cheese burger (total £15) with lots of chips & generous side salad to share with my daughter. Food came out quickly, was hot, well presented and a generous amount. The burger was amazing with chunks of steak & gravy inside, proper cheese not that orange plastic square! My daughter & myself loved our meal, “best burger ever” she said! Well worth a visit to this peaceful traditional village pub, and on the off road walking & cycle trails from north to south mimms.

After long lock down I and my friend finally could enjoy nice lunch in this lovely pub . Thank you for all members of staff for amazing service and friendly welcoming. Feels like home . Food taste lovely and fresh .
