Nice pub under new management. There was a great open mic night every Thursday but this is sadly no longer taking place.

Fantastic friendly pub, good beer and pies, good staff and landlord.

Myself and my girlfriend only stopped by for a lemonade each, but the barman and the regulars inside were friendly enough.

Marvelous pub, we were made very welcome

We held a celebration for a 70th birthday in the conservatory and decided we would like a simple buffet. The food was excellent, really tasty and perfect for our needs. Everyone from the Black Horse were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble which all helped to make our celebration really special. We have been there a few times now for various reasons with family and friends and had dinner. They are absolutely brilliant. Would recommend

Great local pub. Does not open until 3pm which is sensible in this current cost of living crisis. Really lovely decor and cosy atmosphere. Good selection of cask ale. Clean trade area and loos were clean too.

Very pleasant local, had a quick pint outside watching the world go by. The service was very quick and with a smile. Atmosphere inside probably not to my taste, but that might have been the football on the tellys. Can recommend and will visit again.

We’d arranged to meet up with some friends who like the Black Horse & hadn’t been for ages. The bar, food & service were spot on . We can thoroughly recommend the burgers. Let’s hope this pub continues to win over many more visitors & locals.

We were two couples in a group of sixteen. Both blokes had black pudding starter and beef Wellington mains and the ladies both had prawn cocktail starters followed by salmon en croute. What beautiful meals. Black pudding on a rosti wafer with perfect crusted egg (split to show runny orange yolk) and light mustard sauce. Huge prawn cocktails with King Prawns, crayfish, avocado, lettuce and sauce. Individual beef wellies with golden pastry, creamy spud, veg and red wine gravy. Delish. Salmon and stuffing again golden crusted and complemented by mash, broccoli and dill. Lady diners delighted. Great staff, great staff and a great laugh for all. Well done 'The Black'.

We are regular visitors for a drink but came in today for a Christmas meal and it was all stunning. The whole menu was fantastic but I had the black pudding starter, the beef wellington main and lotus biscoff cheesecake. It was all delicious and between our group basically covered the whole menu. We couldn’t fault a single thing! Staff as usual were friendly and happy to help with anything and the pub was warm and festive. We thoroughly recommend that anyone visit and give it a try. We will certainly be back.

Really welcoming pub. Met this guy in there, Jeff I think his name was, or JD. Anyway he bought me a drink, tasted a bit funny but what the hell. Ended up at his place, can't remember much after that. The pub was good though.

Lovely friendly staff and the Roast dinners were beautiful. I had the beef and my friend the Lamb. Almost better than home-made. Reasonable priced as well!

Fabulous food. There were 9 of us and all the food came out piping hot. Excellent service. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was amazing. Excellent spacious pub, not substantially different from last time I was in, maybe 45 years ago! Redecorated and upholstered so fresh, clean and tidy but not ruined by misguided "modernisation". Super pint of draught Bass and delicious food served by a friendly welcoming barman. I wish it was my local, unfortunately it's too far to walk from Sheffield.

Called for an evening drink and meal. Good food, sensible prices and efficient service. Can't ask for anything more. Highly recommended.

My wife and I walked down to the Black Horse and enjoyed a good home cooked dinner. The service was excellent and the wine was spot on.. I recommend you give it a try. Shauna, behind the bar was especially helpful.

Securely managed and safe public house with excellent food and beers. Service to tables is quick and efficient, menu selection for adults and children is good.

We stumbled on the Black Horse by accident whilst we were walking on the Wirral Way during our recent stay at Wirral Country Park. What a find! . The host and staff were extremely friendly. We stayed for Sunday lunch and I can honestly say that it was one of the best roasts I have ever had. We would wholeheartedly recommend this pub.

Post the latest lockdown and subsequent re-opening we have visited The Black Horse for our evening meal after work.The steak (with Chef's special recipe) was chosen both times and is excellent. The steak pie was also well filled and came with ample chips, peas and gravy.Comprehensive menu that covers all appetites, occasions and needs.Well done to the team.

Went on re-opening day 17/05/21 welcomed by the very friendly Landlord and staff (no change there) was with a group of regulars although split up to comply with current regulars. The London Pride bitter was excellent and now a much extended and welcome wine list available that complemented the food. My own choice was the Peking Duck Spring Rolls which were fabulous followed by Rib-eye steak which ranked as one of the best I have tasted in a very long time. My wife had the Halloumi Fries Salad to start followed by Vegetarian Lasagne which according to her were also excellent. If you think the Black Horse just serves ordinary pub food then think again it is far superior to that and well worth a visit.

A group of us have been waiting for relaxation of lockdown in order to try the promised new dinner menu at what was our local pub visited weekly. WOW!! What a revelation. I'll comment on my own meal choice but can confirm that everyone in our party LOVED their food and excellent choice of wine. Lovely to get back to a couple of pints of well kept 'London Pride' then kicked off with duck spring rolls. Crispy and hot with a slightly hotter chilli dip than the usual sweet chilli offering. Excellent. For my main I had rare rib-eye steak. Can't praise it enough, possibly the best I have ever been presented with. Sitting on crushed new potatoes it came with a home-made butter sauce and could actually have been cut with a spoon. Utterly delicious as was the Argentinian Malbec enjoyed with it. Superb.

Thought id leave a review of this place, very well served evening by a fine young man. Think his name was george. The mrs gave a tip of £10 he was so well mannered... pay rise needed!

Went to this lovely little pub for a late Sunday lunch , greeted by the manager Wayne who was courteous, friendly & made us feel very relaxed & welcome . Nothing was too much trouble & the service was spot on . The homemade food was worth the short wait & was delicious & hot . Good portions, tasty food & well worth a visit . Highly recommended unlike other local pubs in the area

Decided to go to our local pub to eat and drink last Tuesday 15/09/20.We already knew the pub was friendly and safe but hadn’t eaten there since opening after lockdown.Greeted by Gemma who served us well with our pre dinner drinks. Spoke to chef, James, who is very pleasant and he recommended the rib eye steaks.We had shared starters of halloumi fries and garlic bread both of which were very tasty and served to us at the exact time we requested.The steaks were cooked to perfection and can be highly recommended, James did check we were happy!As it was my birthday it was also my privilege to pay and I was pleasantly surprised with the cost, very reasonable.Thoroughly enjoyed our evening and would recommend to anyone- we will certainly be back very shortly

My wife and I decided to try our local pub for a meal. It had recently reopened under new management. The meal and the staff were superb. I can fully recommend this old coaching house pub for quality food and first class service.

My wife and I had Dinner Thursday 27th August. My starter was halloumi fries with a nice dipping source and a salad. We both ordered the rib eye steaks medium. The chef - James came out to ask us exactly how we would want our steaks cooked and we said pink with no blood. The steaks were cooked to perfection and washed down with a bottle of red wine. The service was great and we enjoyed the meal. Will be going back soon.

Called in this evening for an early evening drink, and on seeing the food decided to order meals. Food is all homemade, beautifully presented, and excellent quality a really pleasant experience.. Staff all friendly and the manager took the time to introduce himself and made us very welcome.. have already booked for Bank Hol Lunch..

We had a lovely meal in August and we highly recommend a visit to the Black Horse. We chose the spicy chicken wings and halloumi fries followed by the minted lamb burger and Black Horse black burger. The food was fabulous, all homemade , even the black brioche bun for the burger. The staff are great, welcoming and friendly and you are always served promptly with drinks.

We have decided to use the eat out to help out scheme to help local and independent businesses - therefor we stumbled across this lovely pub. The food was lovely and the staff were friendly and attentive keeping to all of their social distancing rules. We enjoyed our evening here and would definitely return if we are in the area again as it’s not local to us!

Having been exhausted from a walk in sweltering heat and getting lost we came across the black horse . Barmaid very pleasant and so helpful in getting us in the right direction !!! Meal at lunchtime very tasty. Would call again if ever in the vicinity .

After months on lockdown and hubby being on total lockdown we called into the pub when it re-opened for a few quiet drinks....the pub was quiet...there was another couple in the lounge....bar all marked out ...to guide people about closeness...my hubby who is deaf and has aids asked what real ale was on the dark haired girl went to explain to him what brews where on, being hard of hearing it is natural to move a little closer to be able to lip read or hear....when the blonde haired lady SHOUTED at Him to get behind lines and I mean rudely shouted at him he was shocked and walked away we discussed what had happened when we sat down...our drink was brought over....we then left the Blonde lady had gone home unfortunately as I intended having a quiet word with her.....I expressed to the other barmaid how upset I was at how the other lady treated my husband.........she apologised , I was very tearful and we both went home......very very rude....IT WAS MY HUSBANDs 70th birthday on 6th July and we visited the pub on 11th......

Dissappointing experience with rude manager and drinks are a bit overpriced. There were only 2 drinks on draught due to covid - i can understand this, but mine had weird brown bits stuck inside the glass. When i asked for a fresh pint, there was still a brown blob in the fresh one, so either they just poured it into a new glass from the old one, or the pipes were dirty. John smiths didnt have any head and just tasted weird. Further, the card machine didnt work and we kept having to go in and out of the pub trying to pay because their machine was not working properly. The manager had a moan at me because i was standing at the bar asking for something, yeah i know social distancing is an issue nowadays but most other pubs wont do this. She also seemed to get frustrated when i was asking for the prices even though they had no drinks menu set up. No perspex screens between tables or at the bar either - ill-prepared to reopen.

Clearly the best pub in Heswall especially the quality of the beer & food.The Landlord Wayne and his wife are absolutely prefect very friendly & professional the place is immaculate inside and out and I am extremely happy this hidden gem has reopened its doors all the best of luck-Highly recommend this venue!! We visited the Black Horse to watch the rugby early evening on Saturday night and we had a really lovely evening . We ordered bar food and that was very good . Will definitely visit again .

Lovely pub and the staff are top notch - so welcoming and friendly and quickly remembered our family’s drink orders. Lindsey was especially good to us when we had difficulty getting a taxi home. Would recommend this place to anyone.

First time visit and we were very impressed. Initially we were just going to have a couple of drinks but decided to stay for food as it looked and smelled good. We were not disappointed and all enjoyed what we had and for one of us the additional sausage bap went down very well. The manager was very friendly and has high hopes for the success of the pub so please support it when you can. We will be back.

The Black Horse in lower Heswall has reopened now. So called in to see the changers. And stayed to watch the match. So ordered a Sunday Roast. It was fantastic fresh, hot, and the service is spot on. We have been back twice since for a lunch. And still it was spot on. It looks like it is on the road to recovery. Recommend it.

Glad to see it back open. Two good real ales. Lamentably weak on malt whiskey. Stick to the Jamieson's!

Went down to the black to watch the match last night. Always met with a warm welcome by the new manager and his team. We had not planned on eating there and had been saying for many years how the pub needed to offer some basic good value bar snack type food. While at the bar I looked at a menu and saw that they offer a range of pub classics that are exactly that, good simple bar food at a good price. They also have a full menu for those that want something more substantial. We opted for some chicken wings and chips. Have to say that's exactly what we wanted, something to share while chatting and watching the game. Food was excellent and service very good. The pub looks lovely at the moment all done for Christmas.
