Beautiful views across the Beamish valley. Permanent wedding marquee. Pleasant dining areas. Ample free parking. Friendly helpful staff. Had lunch here on a Thursday at the same time as a wedding reception was ongoing. Food service was a little slow perhaps because of the wedding, but we didn't mind as we appreciated being able to take our time.

Our entire wedding experience was made by our planner, Georgiana. No request was an issue; she helped calm both grooms down and kept us up to date on everything both throughout the day and in the months, weeks and days prior. Our wedding wouldn't have been the same without her and we are thankful for the time and effort she put into making our day perfect.

Great location and food tasted nice but service was pretty dreadful. We placed our order at the bar. Food for 4 arrived but only 3 lots of cutlery. Had to ask for cutlery twice and three times for tap water for the table. We ordered 2 portions of scampi. Not sure if they were running out as 1 portion had significantly less scsmpi

Arranged dinner for my mams 80th birthday, after ordering it took an hour for our meals to come and I would have said it was really busy. Two of the meals were warm not hot . We ordered dessert however on the phone they assured me they would do a plate with happy birthday written in icing just to add a special touch. This didn't happen, was really disappointed with the food and service especially when it was my mams 80th

Absolutely stunning place. The food was just so delicious, the staff were brilliant and the surrounding views were incredible. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending the Black Horse. We used it as a stop over on our return from Scotland. Shame it’s not nearer us as I would go on a regular basis! Thanks to you all for hosting us and allowing us to park our Campervan overnight. Food was ok, service was atrocious, booked table for 1.45pm, booking stated table needed to be clear by 3pm which would have been fine if service had been better 45 minute wait for started and received main at 2.50pm, we weren't asked to finish meal quickly but makes things uncomfortable in case people are waiting for table. Service charge is automatically charged to the bill which is fine if service is worth paying for but not when service is rubbish. Won't be back.

Visited for dad’s birthday. We sat in the courtyard where the views were absolutely breathtaking. We ordered our food and drinks at the bar where we were informed we would need to pay as we went along due to sitting outside., fair enough… Howe we were then told we would be given our starters and mains all at the same time… why I hear you ask… well apparently because that’s the way they do things if you want to enjoy the views. Mains were freezing by the time we started eating them. Other than that though food was beautifully presented and quality was certainly there. Real shame about outdoor policy!!

Stayed for 2 nights on our trip to Beamish. When I booked this I thought it looked good, but later when reading the reviews I wasn’t so sure I’d made the right choice. How wrong I was we had an amazing stay. From the minute we arrived and were greeted by the lovely lady in reception to the moment we left everything was perfect. The room was amazing, the bed really comfortable and everything was spotless. All the staff we came into contact with were brilliant. Breakfast ticked all the boxes lots of choice, well cooked and plentiful. We ate both nights in the restaurant and could not fault it. I cannot comprehend why some reviews are so negative! We hope to return and would not hesitate to recommend. Thanks to everyone at the Black Horse for a memorable stay.

Sunday lunch, again a fantastic venue about 5 minutes drive from the main gate at Beamish. Immaculate grounds, lots of parking, easy access, dog friendly, plenty of seating both inside and out, very friendly staff, food was excellent. I had chicken supreme, friend had roast beef, served very promptly probably within 5 minutes of ordering. Drink prices were good. Couldn't fault the place at all.

Staying local due to work. Good points. My room is immaculate. Staff super friendly, One of the nicest pints of Guinness outside of Ireland. Bad points. If I’m staying I’ve already paid for service. To give someone a bill with a service charge on it and then tell them condiments are at the end of the bar after placing their meal in front of them is just rude! Remove the service charge and just charge what the meal costs. It’s embarrassing for your staff to have to take it off. My company doesn’t pay service charges. This isn’t America!

Family together for a birthday on Good Friday . Drink order fine , starters and manis ordered without a problem. Starters came a were good then it all went wrong , almost an hour be for mains arrived . 6 orders fine but one of the fish and chips ordered were fried to a crisp and was eventually taken away. One of the party ordered a vegetarian curry and was eventually brought a chicken curry , we were then told it would be at least 15 minutes before the correct meal would arrive, When I paid the bill the manager was very apologetic, saying he could not understand what went wrong. There was an acceptable adjustment made to the bill. Not sure if we would go back as a family !

My husband and I stayed for one night in March in the Thyme room. This was our second overnight stay in the past 10 months or so. The room was spotlessly clean and was in a very quiet location. We ate in the restaurant that evening and the meal was great, as was the service. I've got to say the sticky toffee pudding for dessert was THE BEST and I've eaten a few in other restaurants but this one was first-class. Breakfast the next morning was hot, plentiful and nicely served.

Food was lovely, when we eventually got it and the waitress was lovely, but there was clearly a problem somewhere either in the kitchen or with communication as our mains had obviously been forgotten, there was an item missing from one of the mains, which, after asking we were told they had run out but were expecting some next week and then the desserts took ages to arrive, this was a special birthday lunch for my daughters and I felt let down

We really enjoyed the afternoon tea, which you have to book 24 hours in advance. It included three finger sandwiches, a warm mushroom tart, a warm vegetable tart or sausage roll, a cheese scone with butter, a fruit scone with jam and cream, a little eclair, a little chocolate cake, a little carrot cake, a little chocolate and cream muffin, and a little square of the fancy cake which has a custardy creamy set middle with very light pasty and icing on top. For some reason the vegetarian sandwich selection included a fish sandwich, but my husband made the booking so he probably chose the wrong option along the way. Anyway, it was easily rectified anyway with a quick swap between our plates. I got the impression that the tarts, scones and cakes had either been made on site or provided by a local specialist baker - they looked and tasted premium items. We also had a choice of tea and coffee. I think you can upgrade if you want some alcohol too. It's an absolutely enormous amount of food so thankfully they provide boxes to take away anything you can't manage on the day. The service was friendly and sitting in the conservatory overlooking the countryside is always a joy. Everything here is always clean, nicely decorated, and well maintained. We also had a walk round the vintage car building in the grounds. It was a really lovely afternoon and I can't recommend the afternoon tea highly enough.

Terrible Gave this a one star because I couldn’t give it zero. Went there on Valentines evening because we got married there 6 years ago. My wife ordered Mussels, when they came a lot of them were un opened and broken, what sort of a chef sends out broken an unopened mussels, it’s just down right dangerous, I had a beetroot salad which consisted of two small beets from a jar cut in half and a grilled slice of cheese. Won’t be going back anytime soon.

I wouldn't normally write a negative review of an establishment or service as people can have 'off' days, but this place has consistently declined in the last year. The three times I have visited Black Horse Beamish in the last 12 months - the service has steadily declined. I booked a table for me, my wife and daughter to celebrate Valentine's Day. The table was booked online and there was a disclaimer that needed to be agreed to that the table would be vacated withing 1 hour 15 minutes of your seated time. I thought this was pretty tight for time but thought to myself, well at least the service will be prompt. Having booked on line for previous visits, a confirmation email would be sent confirming the reservation which included a unique reference number. A few days past after the online booking but no confirmation email was received. I called to check that the reservation had been made and explained the lack of email confirmation. The member of staff assured me the booking was secured and would email the confirmation again - email did not arrive. We arrived in good time for our reservation expecting the restaurant to be extremely busy given the alloted 1 hour 15 minutes we were afforded. I was surprised to see that the restaurant was desolate. Three tables occupied and that includes my family. The waiter arrived with some complimentary prosecco for me and my wife in light of it being Valentine's Day, which was a nice touch. Sadly things went rapidly down hill from here. It's ironic I use the word 'rapid' as the service was anything but. Or food order was taken. 45 minutes later we were still waiting for our food. In that 45 minutes, not once did a member of the service team approach us, not even to check we were OK for drinks. My wife caught the attention of one of the service team to inform of the long wait time. An apology was offered. Two minutes later, some complimetary garlic dough balls and olives were brought to our table by way of appology. 15 minutes later our food arrived. We had waited 1 hour for food to be served from placing our order. An excuse/reason was offered: "sorry, we had some orders to take care of upstairs". Not ideal but in the spirit of having a nice evening, we decided we would let the wait time pass and just enjoy our meal. My wife and daughter's meal were fine, mine however (beamish burger) was cremated on the exterior, but as raw as the day it left the butcher beneath the charcoal crust. I went to the bar to inform the staff of this. I was greeted by a gentleman who was unable to comprehend my concern due to a considerable language barrier. I then explained it to another of the staff at the bar, who then informed one of the waiters. The waiter arrived to our table to explain he understands my food was cold. Again, I explained it was not cold, but rather raw and showed the inside of burger. He apologised and asked if I would like another with my meal being removed from the bill. I agreed and assumed this would be rectified quickly. 30 minutes later, my wife and daughter had finished their meal, I was still sat awaiting the replacement meal for me. A total of 1 hour 35 had passed since our food order was taken before the replacement meal was presented. With the meal in essence being ruined, I was in no mood to expect my fanily to wait while I ate the food with such a poorly disjointed meal experience. The bill was paid for the two meals and drinks that had been consumed. Throughout the experience, I observed the bar area and noted that there were always ample staff to attend to drinks orders. At no point did I witness anyone wait longer than a few seconds to be served drinks. From this experience, and two previous poor, although not as poor, experiences, the excuses eluded to the fact they now cater for weddings which seems to take president, as does the alcohol side of the business - ultimately their biggest revenue generators. And that's fine, if that's your primary revenue, great. But don't offer a restaurant service and expect people to wait for extended periods, especially when the restaurant was empty. The lack of tables booked on Valentine's Day I think perhaps speaks volumes about the steady decline in service. I can only assume more people have not taken the time to share similar experiences. Certainly will not be visiting again or be able to recommend anyone visit Black Horse Beamish.

Limited Sunday menu, that’s understandable. No booking so we were seated in the bar area where we were told no table service and order at the bar . It was a busy Sunday so that was not as easy as it sounds with many stood drinking at the bar . Food was ok , fish very good . No follow up to ask how things were and lack of condiments, we had to hunt for vinegar. Paid the 10% service charge but didn’t receive the service .

We were totally ignored. Not once did anyone acknowledge us or apologise for the delay. At 2.30 after telling a waitress that we had a table booked for 2.15 did she take us to a table. A great stay and excellent service. We stayed for the sunday lunch and stay special. The triple roast was outstanding and the feather blade of beef was very nicely done. Mrs chose the Amaretto Creme Brulee and I opted for the age old Sticky Toffee Pudding. Both were delicious and it was nice to have a toffee sauce which was more toffee and less caramel. The Bar has a great selection of spirits and has a lovely cozy feeling. The room was very spacious and decorated to suit the buildings. The bed was comfortable and the large copper tub was great for a nice hot soak on the winters evening. Now the downsides, as with lots of hotels they supply a hairdryer but as is usually the case no plug within reach of a mirror. We had a minor issue with the toilet cistern constantly filling which they tried to fix in the evening and were very complimentary in offering a solution.

Had the misfortune to be here on Christmas Day for lunch, what an absolute disappointment. Arrived as directed for 12 pm by 1.30 pm still waiting for starters, starters eventually arrived bread on plate was stale it had been sitting that long, Main course didn't appear till 3.30pm by which time, my daughters partner had had to leave as he had children to collect. The main course was delivered cold and had to be returned to the kitchen to be reheated, meat had been microwaved and was now discoloured as over cooked, meal was served with dried and shrivelled roasted veg which consisted of only 2 veg, not sprouts left apparently. We had to take our dessert as a takeaway, as did many other people. Conservatory had been warm when we arrived but they turned off the heating and people were sitting having there Christmas lunch with coats on. There is just no excuse for this. I booked one of the beautiful rooms (Ash) for my boyfriends birthday; we've stayed here a few times before so knew what to expect. The rooms are honestly so beautiful, the views are absolutely stunning as well. The bar had the fire roaring and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed on a freezing cold day before we were able to check in. I'm always a bit worried about staying out and dining places because I have a milk allergy and eating out can sometimes be really difficult, especially when I don't want to be violently ill when I'm out but the waitress and the chef both put my mind at ease. I was given the allergens menu and the chef also came out to explain menu items to me as well which was really helpful. I've only had the breakfast here so can't comment on the actual menu but the food does look unreal. Really couldn't fault this place and would honestly recommend if you're looking for somewhere to escape to for a special occasion.

Oh, and they automatically add an outrageous service charge and hope you won't notice. So a pretty poor experience.

Anyone booking a wedding at this venue I would definitely not recommend just recently been to what was ment to be a small intimate wedding in the George Ridley room the grounds of this venue and the food I could not fault BUT I have never been to a venue were the staff been so rude to guests and so un organised! All the special and sentimental things the bride had planned didn’t happen because one member of staff didn’t feel well that day that was the response we got for why songs never got played carpet not getting hovered for walking down lights not put on having to ask when the bride and groom can do there first Dance the list could go on unfortunately the bride and grooms day is over now and they not going to get that back but anyone wanting a small intimate organised wedding I would definitely not recommend I think this venue really needs to sort there staff !

We stayed here in our Motorhome in the car park for a night and booked a table in the restaurant. The car park was quiet and had a great view. The restaurant was beautiful inside and out and the food was really great and staff were friendly and welcoming.

Arrived here about 2pm in our motorhome, after visiting the open air museum in Beamish. We had seen the Black Horse on the Park4Night app. We booked a table for food in the bar for 5pm and asked if we could sleep overnight in our van in the car park. The girl behind the bar could not have been more pleasant. We parked our van up on a nice flat concrete area in the corner of the car park. The car park had lovely views. We went back into the bar and ordered two pints of lager, which came to £8.40, which I thought was very reasonable. We sat outside in the sun and had 4 more lagers each. Lovely big seating area outside. We went into bar when it got cold and there was an open fire roaring away. We got chatting to a nice couple from Hull. Then we ordered our food. I had the chicken burger and my girlfriend had the beef burger. Both were excellent and well priced. All the staff were polite. Toilets were spotless. Wouldn't hesitate to go back. We left at 8am the next morning. I believe they do breakfast in the pub too? Would definitely recommend.

Had my baby shower today in the George Ridley room. Amazing day from start to finish! Staff couldn't do enough for us, they were lovely (2 ladies on shift today 19/10/24 in george ridley room, georgina I think sorry and another lady)... The room it's self is beautiful, couldn't of picked a better setting. So cosy. Bar and terrace all to ourselves too. Ipad for music. Afternoon tea was one of the best I've had, delicious everyone thoroughly enjoyed it and the unlimited tea and coffee. Scones lovely and warm. 100% recommend the baby shower package at black horse beamish. Will be back to view the wedding open day as grounds look unreal !

Hadn't been for a while but nothing has changed, staff standing chatting when they can see you waiting to be served. Thought we'd give them another chance but never again. NOT RECOMMENDED.

Arrived with a motorhome and asked if we could overnight before Beamish the following day. Not a problem. Restaurant seemed quiet. Ordered my black pudding scotch egg starter along with pork belly, mixed grill and burger. All to arrive at the same time. My scotch egg starter arrived with my wife and sons mains. We were all amazed by the quality of food, it was fantastic. My wife had wine while I tried Theakston Hairy Biker, an amazing pint of beer. After a couple more pints and my wife and son finishing their mains I realised my mixed grill hadn't arrived. I never got a chance to query it before the lady explained there had been a mix up in the system but it was on the way. We were happy to sit and wait as it felt relaxing and welcoming. Next thing we had drinks brought to us courtesy of management for the wait and inconvenience. No inconvenience at all but we happily drank. Usually a mixed grill is the safe option and the same wherever you go but here it was so tender, cooked to perfection, full of flavour, even the grilled tomatoes has herbs and seasoning. We ordered dessert. I had the crumble with custard. I'm not sure if the portion size was correct or for a family of four (but saw me loving the food and felt bad for the slight delay in my main) but I would expect a crumble that size to be divided at 3 if not 4 times. Again it was amazing and I finished the lot. We all left absolutely stuffed and slightly tipsy. Amazing food, friendly staff, great location and tasty beer. Highly recommend.

This review is for the restaurant only. The location is excellent with nice views from the conservatory. We had lunch. At this time they serve pub lunch classics, for want of a better term. The food was more than acceptable with relatively generous portions. Sadly the service was not so good. Not the fault of the sole server, he had to serve both the restaurant and bar customers, and the bar was rather busy. This meant I had to catch him at the bar to clear the table and take our desert order. Not his fault but more staffing needed. Price was mid-range for the offering if considered a restaurant, or upper range if a pub.

I was visiting for a family wedding and we had an amazing time. The venue was gorgeous and decorated perfectly. The food was amazing and the drinks were well priced. It was really difficult to decide between going to bed early or jumping in that giant bath tub. Overall the staff were polite and friendly, nothing was too much bother for them even though they had been working tirelessly since the early morning preparing for the wedding. I want to thank all of the staff who made the day possible, it was phenomenal. Thank you all so much for everything you did.

We booked The Black Horse based on its listing on the Beamish Living Museum website. It was close to the museum, offered reasonable rates and looked comfortable. However, on arriving, we were immediately impressed by the friendly and helpful reception staff as well as the excellent accommodation, which resembled a traditional street dating from the older nearby villages and Beamish itself. Our room (Sage) was spacious, modern and included a large walk-in shower. Our stay got even better as we found all staff, including waitresses and chefs were friendly chatty and welcoming. The menu was excellent, offering local produce at reasonable prices, especially when considering the large portions. Breakfast, which was included in the rate, was freshly prepared and provided a range of cooked and continental options. All in all, our overnight stay added to our Beamish Museum experience and we will not hesitate to stay there on our next visit. The independent owner should be very proud of his staff who clearly enjoy working there and looking after their guests. It was so much better than staying at a multi national hotel chain.

Waited over an hour for food when we were told 25mins when ordering. Had to leave and get a refund due to tight timelines Lost of other people having the same issues with food and drink orders They should have suspended app orders if they can’t fulfil them in a timely manner. Maybe a one off but not a good experience

I have same issue I have sent my application special delivery guaranteed and it says delivered and signed but when I keep calling them they say nothing on the system. We want answers because we have paid for the service what’s wrong with you people. Is there any management or they not bothered to sort people applications
