OMG! What can I say? My friend and I had a fabulous dinner on a Saturday evening, and a great Sunday roast on Sunday evening. Food and puddings were fantastic, yummy and delicious. The owner and all the staff were so friendly. We had a lovely time and a good giggle. We even met a couple of the locals.

The Black Boy was recommended to us by my friends family. As a group of 9 we booked ahead for lunch. We received a warm welcome from the landlady who was lovely and showed us to our table. The menu had plenty of choice on it, I had a hard time choosing as everything sounded delicious. We were a group of 3 adults and 6 children aged between 10 and 17 and everyone found there perfect choice. We didn't have to wait long for food and everyone had clean plates as it was so tasty. I had the homemade pie of the day which was mince and onion and it was amazing!.. overall we really enjoyed our meals here. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area.

Visited on a bright, November Thursday lunchtime with my parents. Have been coming here for years: this time was a shock. Menu has shrunk: now extremely limited and basic. Dad's Ham Egg and Chips was okay, but just slices of processed ham, chips and 2fried eggs, without even a garnish - pricey for that. Ma had liver and bacon: it was really good, esp the gravy and the mash; but ruined by the veg - the green beans undercooked, and the carrots were absolutely raw. Shameful that there's only one vegetarian main, and that it's just a basic tomato and mozarella pasta; so I had that, but with olive bread. The home-made olive bread was gorgeous - I mean, really spectacularly good, small sticks, crisp on the outside, nice and soft on the inside, with just the right level of olivey flavour and richness. Which was just as well, as it's all I ate. The pasta consisted of a bowl of overcooked, limp fusilli, sitting in a couple of centimetres of watery tomato "sauce", with a layer of melted mozarella stuck to the bottom. The watery tomato tasted very strongly of dried herbs; and that was ALL it tasted of. It was far too watery and insipid to do more to the pasta than make it wet. The invisible cheese was only dredged up when I attempted to stir the dish, and stuck to my fork in strings so I had to wind it around and then scrape it off with my teeth to actually eat any of it. The entire dish was inedible: not just "not very nice" but, actually, really quite nasty. The waitress, who was lovely (the service today was as good as always), asked me why I hadn't eaten the pasta - "to provide feedback to the chef", so I politely told her. I did not expect a response; but was informed a few minutes later by the, now a little uncomfortable-looking, waitress that she had been asked to pass on that the chef "...had made the sauce herself" and that she was "...sorry it was not to my taste". While perfectly obvious that she had "...made the sauce herself" - and how, I struggle to imagine who would be prepared to eat this disgraceful slop at all - let alone find it tasty. I was really quite annoyed at getting this patronising, defensive response to an opinion I had only expressed because I was asked for it - especially after a disappointing experience with the only main meal that I could eat off the menu. I struggled not to walk into the kitchen at this point and tell the chef to her face that, if this really is the best she can do, I would be happy spend ten minutes explaining to her how to turn a concasse of tomato into a simple, but delicious, pasta sauce; and how to then make an appetising basic vegetarian meal out of it. Though underwhelmed and disappointed (and annoyed and hungry, in my case), we pressed on to desert, which is usually excellent here. The Baileys' Cheesecake was really rich and delicious, without being over-sweet; the Lemon Meringue Roulade was good - light and lemony; but my Ma thought its delicate flavour was overwhelmed by the sickly strawberry sauce drizzled over it. I've had the bread and butter pudding here before and it is (was) absolutely to die for - literally the best I have ever tasted. This time, it turned out to be mostly-dry pieces of rather tough white bread, layered with hard dried fruit, sugar and spices, sitting (inexplicably) on a thin layer of revolting semi-raw, pastry; with little evidence that any of it had seen much in the way of egg custard or butter. Again, not just "not very nice" but absolutely disgusting. At this point we decided to give up, skip coffee, and just pay and leave as fast as possible. They seemed pleased with themselves for not charging us for the inedible pasta; but there seemed little point in us mentioning the vile bread and butter pudding...as by then it was obvious that their (new?) chef cannot actually cook - at least, not to any decent, consistent, commerial standard - but is also rather defensive about it. It's a great shame, as when the food was good today, it was really excellent. But most of it was just ordinary and pretty bland; and when it was bad, it was truly terrible. Perhaps the chef was just having an off day - who knows. In any case, we had travelled from Ipswich specifically to have lunch here as a treat; but after today, despite more than three decades of our family eating at the Black Boy when we visit this part of Essex, we will not be returning. I don't suppose the chef will care, really, if her food is "not to our taste".

We went after a funeral, received a very warm welcome. tea and coffee served immediately on arrival. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious, a lovely variety. There weren't as many people as we thought, so at the end bags were offered to take food home. It is only a couple of minutes drive from the crematorium so very suitable for a wake.

Arrived at 12:15 as part of a group of 16. 2 of the party were delayed by traffic but we were ready for 12: 40. Starters and Mains were preordered, followed by desserts & coffee. Managed to pay at 3:15!!. The wait between courses was painfully slow. The food was mediocre at best. My Pie was made with very thick pastry accompanied by a table spoon of peas in a little egg cup sized container and too many chips. The coffee was a brown liquid and the Bread & Butter pudding was stale cube of tough bread and fruit with a side of custard. My wife had scampi and chips that has few scampi and many chips followed by cheese cake which she said tasted nice but had a 2cm tough base. so the 2 of us had 2 courses that cost us £43.

We were hoping to eat here on a Sunday afternoon after a lovely day at the beach. When I called them they said that there would only be a table available from around 6pm. We arrived at the pub 10 minutes later and were confused as when we got there only 4 tables had people eating/waiting for food. We asked if we could eat outside and were told that was ok. When we went to order our food we were then advised that we couldn’t put an order in until 6.30pm. All very confusing for a pub that had 80% empty tables. We said that we would be happy to wait until 6.30pm. Then we asked if we could put our order in so it could be brought out when the kitchen was ready. The waitress was very unfriendly and said that we couldn’t order until 6.30pm. So we went to the bar to order some drinks and the barmaid was very dismissive of us. We were made to feel like a nuisance and the service was very unfriendly. The main waitress and barmaid couldn’t even bring themselves to smile at us! We finished our drinks quickly and felt that it was best we take our custom somewhere that would appreciate it! Shame for the Black Boy as they lost out on a big booking - there were 9 of us eating mains and desserts!!

I’ve visited the Black Boy twice now for lunch, midweek and on a Saturday. Both times it was pretty quiet. The service was good, a friendly (if not overly attentive) welcome. We sat in the garden the second time - the only issue being you had to walk all the way around to the front of the pub to get back in, as there are no handles on the outside of the conservatory doors! The food - burger, scampi and hunters chicken was all lovely - hot, well cooked, good portions and very tasty. The place perhaps lacks a little investment in the fabric of the main pub area, toilets etc. although the conservatory area is lovely. Will certainly return for the food though.

Went out for a Sunday evening dinner with family, we ordered 2 portions of calamari! But when it arrived it was over cooked and it was pieces of crispy rubbery stuff that didn’t resemble calamari at all. We also had 2 fish and chips and a beef burger, the burger bun was hard and the fish was very greasy! Mostly batter. And over priced!

Recently I visited this pub/restaurant with friends and family it took them ages to ask for drinks the service is absolutely dreadful we looked at the menu to see not a lot of options I ordered the rump steak it took around a hour to arrive which is just stupid I asked for my steak medium as I cut through my steak i could see that it was well done so I sent it back it.

Great service received from the get go. Classic pub menu, not huge choice, just the standard stuff but done very very well. Reasonably riced and good beers on tap

Attended my fathers funeral at the Weeley Crematorium on February 27th, and booked The Black Boy for a Wake. What outstanding food and a really nice private conservatory that accommodated over 50+ guests. Freshly prepared, savoury pastries, scones, fruit platters, sandwiches, goujons, Vegetable platter and dips, and unlimited tea.

Got seated right away but then waited at least 15 minutes to get served in fact we ask if we go up to bar to order drink and food. This was the only blip on otherwise excellent service. We had a lovely lunch and the food was superb. Prices aren't to bad. Pub is nice and clean nice gardn area and plenty of parking

We held a wake here after a service at nearby Weeley Crematorium. The food was delicious. Overall there was plenty but the fish goujons and chips were by far the most popular and therefore ran out quite quickly - however there were plenty of sandwiches etc for those who didn't get in quick. It was lovely to have some sweet stuff -i.e. Fresh fruit and homemade scones with jam and cream. The tea and coffee was plentiful and very welcome. Thank you to all the staff at the Black Boy and I look forward to returning to try out the restaurant.

Table for 7 wasn’t a good family meal out! The wait was an hour for starters, then at least 40mins for mains! Lack of staff ! & we got put next to a very loud family! Couldn’t hear my 83yr old aunt talking ! And as for the food it would of been ok if it had come out Hot! A roast lukewarm Yuk, the long wait between courses was a joke!! Staff were running around like headless chickens ! Not a pleasant family experience! Sorry

We went there for Sunday lunch and could not have been happier. We both choose the roast me having beef and my friend having pork we both enjoyed our meals and service was excellent I did have a dessert which was the baileys cheesecake which i had with cream I could not eat it all as I was full up. I have seen reviews on here but we could not understand how people have said it was bad as we had a very enjoyable lunch

Een goede en nette service met lekker en veel eten. Een lekker dessert na in een mooie eetgelegenheid. De pub die er bij hoort is ontzettend gezellig.

Overpriced on the cod and chips portion was small and frozen chips from a bag fish was ok should have gone somewhere else.

We had some relatives from Devon with their dog visiting the area and needed to find a decent dog friendly place to eat. I contacted The Ship, and they advised me that they were very dog friendly, so we booked a table for lunchtime. Because of the dog, we were given a table in the bar area with a hard floor, which was understandable. The pub/ restaurant was fairly busy, but it didn't really impact on the service, especially as there were just 2 staff members serving. The meals were well presented, plentiful and hot, and served with a smile. Two of us had whitebait main meals, one had grilled cod, and the other had the chicken burger. Everything was nicely cooked and good quality and we all really enjoyed the food. Three of us had really nice desserts, and we all came away pleasantly full. Will we return? Definitely! Especially as we only live less than 10 miles away.

We popped in for a Sunday roast for the first time since the pub went under new management last year. WOW! The best roast dinner I’ve had in a restaurant ever. The meat was tender, the potatoes were perfectly crisp, the gravy was out of this world. I opted for a side of cauliflower cheese, which was delicious. The service was amazing too, lovely friendly staff who couldn’t have done more for us. Highly recommend! Can’t wait to go back.

Fantastic fish and chips - we ordered and paid online (easy and completely hassle-free) and we arrived a few minutes early and our order was made up there and then. The fish is really fresh and it has been cooked in fresh, clean oil, which allows you to taste all the flavour of the fish. And the chips are great, too!

A few months back the Three Jays had new management , he has transform the pub utterly, warm, friendly ,most welcoming, but the prize and jewel in the crown, must be the food on offer, truly mind blowing , people go to the big chain restaurants , yet the food on offer is not a patch on the food at the three Jays. You could almost say just like Mum used to make. Veg fresh favourable , roast potato’s so tasty, nice crispy skin, texture , the meat was outstanding so tender , not paper thin again like the big chains offer. Gravy was really tasty made the meal even more extra. Price was another key , not over priced , A restaurant within a truly great public house. So no need to what for further reviews, go on book a meal NOW, I’ve seen their Christmas food list, mind blowing .
