The food here tastes quite good, but not outstanding. Unfortunately the price is not appropriate for that. But the atmosphere is very nice and the service is also friendly.

There is nothing at all wrong with The Bishops. It’s just not quite as good as its rating would have you believe. Food is good. There are a few veggie options but it’s far from exceptional and the portions aren’t huge despite prices not being tiny. It also stung a bit that orders and payment are taken at the bar and before you confirm you are expected to choose the amount of tip to give. Staff are nice enough but when we asked for some recommendations we got very little back. This review is not a criticism. If you want a solid place to eat you won’t be disappointed. But if you’re expecting something that justifies a 4 star rating you might be a little underwhelmed.

We've experienced a friendly warmth during our stay in Wales until that is a recent, truly dreadful experience. An utterly unbelievable scenario unfolded which resembled a skit by the Two Ronnies, laughable if it hadn't been so awful!! We can't comment on the food as we didn't get that far. It all started well, a table booked online, for dinner, for the two of us, reserved well ahead of the appointed date, Sunday 10th March 2024. A confirmation followed, all very promising. The anticipation of a lovely meal in what looked like a great looking pub was all the more acute as it followed a long day of walking and we were tired and hungry. Arriving, again in good time, we were delighted to see a cosy snug complete with a wood burner, and a warm buzz of apparently happy customers. All in all the makings of a great evening ahead. We weren't so much greeted as sparsely acknowledged by a stern looking woman who after checking our reservation, led us right down to the rear of the pub, to a table tucked into a dingy corner, possibly the worst table in the pub which, incidentally, was busy but not crammed. With no friendly chat or advice, indeed no dialogue at all, our silent and reluctant hostess left us. Our disquiet began to grow when we noticed all the reserved tables had a sign to that effect. The table we were sitting at didn't. We were clearly not privileged enough to warrant a reserved sign!!! After 20 minutes rather sadly watching other customers tucking into their food, it began to dawn on us we were not going to get fed by remaining hopeful but static. So a not unreasonable request under the circumstances for some service, was answered thus “you have to order at the bar “. Given we were not told by our stern, silent hostess about this instruction seemed of no concern. Indeed the most this, possibly slightly embarrassed, boy behind the bar could manage was to ask how long we'd been waiting, which did seem a tad irrelevant. An apology would have been more appropriate and indeed more welcome. Our stern and silent hostess then dealt the final blow “Oh I didn't tell you”, again no apology, no contrition and a total lack of interest. Neither of them were busy serving, no one was waiting for drinks, they were not busy, so no excuse there. Thus dismissed it was easy to make the not too difficult decision to leave. This debacle was clearly planned right from the start. We suspect it was all designed to get us to do the one thing they wanted us to do and that is leave. They may have found they had overbooked, they didn't have enough covers for the volume of bookings together with perhaps some difficulty with staff. Whatever the issue, it has resulted in us having no compunction in telling others what happened. Whether people go or not is up to them but bad behaviour should not go unremarked. We can forgive some failings when eating out, poor food, chaotic service, but what is utterly unforgivable and wholly unnecessary is such abject rudeness. If there had been an issue, talk to us, apologise and suggest a way round the problem. We are actually very open to any situation as long as there is courtesy. We ended up going back to a delightful restaurant we'd been to the night before.

A nice pub, with welcoming and helpful staff. There were lots of us there for lunch and the food came pretty quickly and all looked nice. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Vegan and gluten free options were welcome, although there could be a little more variables on the menu in terms of price. Having said this, however, it doesn't affect the rating I've given but is just a suggestion for the future. The rating is mostly given because the staff were welcoming, helpful and friendly, and that always makes a huge difference

Not a good place for food on a busy evening. We'd reserved a table to ensure we could sit and eat but were placed in the general bar area. We were surrounded by groups of people who were drinking, shouting, swearing and singing. Not quite the nice evening meal I was hoping for. To compound the misery, the bar was queued 2 deep all around, so we had to fight to get drinks and order food, or even to find where our table was in the first place. No option for table service. Food was ok. Left as quickly as possible after finishing our meal. Not sure why they don't separate dining couples and families from the livelier crowds. I've no problem with people going out and having fun, but it's not something I want to be in the middle of when I've gone out for an evening meal.
