The Bishops in Pembrokeshire

We visited The Bishops whilst travelling through St. David’s. The pub is very well situated within the town if you are visiting the Cathedral or even passing through. If you’re lucky enough, like us, there are a number of free spaces on the hill, to the side of the Cathedral. There was three of us visiting, we ordered some food from the light bites / sandwiches selection - Ham & Cheese, Coronation Chicken, Tuna Mayo, two soft drinks and a pint of Madri. Now the total bill did come in at £38.50 which in my opinion isn’t cheap, but each sandwich was fresh, tasty and served with a tasty side salad and crisps. The sandwiches really were tasty and very filling, we would definitely recommend if you’re visiting the area and fancy a quick bite to eat with a decent pint!

A lovely period pub with an old world charm, friendly staff and great food. Bookings for food advised as it can get very busy. A good selsction of drinks available and a great atmosphere

excellent service and welcome from all staff, the manageress was very pleasant , and all the other staff fed of that which made the whole pub have a very happy vibe. on the Saturday lunch time we had sandwiches and some chips and the were fresh and delicious. there was at least 3 real ales there which was great and we had the Double Dragon. We booked a table for Sunday lunch for 2.30 , Arrived at 2pm had a drink at the bar and the welcome again was spot on. food again was very nice and this time we had Cwrw Brav and a red wine. All in all a very good pub with good food and drink at a reasonable price. very friendly , with a huge log fire and nice background music. we had been to this pub before and it was better than ever this time. WE WILL BE BACK thanks to all staff

This is a lovely pub. The staff were so very friendly and the food was delicious. They were welcoming to us after we had been on a long hike and were tired and hungry. We all had different menu items and they were all delicious. The chili was great as was the lamb chop special.

We chose smoked salmon with toast.falafels and flat bread.the service was friendly and food well presented and tasty.location is very central to cathedral and menu seemed varied.

No distractive TVs and lots of good food and cheer.

Disorganised chaos. Had a table booked but struggled to get any staff's attention on arrival and very chaotic trying to get food and drink ordered at the bar. The scampi and chips was dire, chunky chips tasted old and out the oven, cut 2 bits of scampi open and did not look nice. Left majority of dinner. The wife enjoyed her fish pie and the kids said their pasta was ok. On the positive the banoffee pudding was nice. Won't be returning any time soon.

Had lunch at the Bishops with a group of us visiting on holiday. The atmosphere was lovely and staff were super friendly, with the pub also accepting dogs! Unfortunately, however, the food was awful. 2 of us ordered the avocado and walnut salad which came undressed, unseasoned, and with over ripe (almost mouldy tasting) avocado. Whilst the onion rings were delicious, the smoked salmon another member of the group had was underwhelming. It would be a lovely place to go for a drink, with a great atmosphere, but would recommend looking further afield for food.

Ate a bacon burger and a ham sandwich. I would say absolutely normal. Good choice of beers. You pay at the cash register and then your food is brought to your table.

Exelent food and cozy but could be a bit cheaper.

Lots of young staff who seemed uninterested and not well trained. A strong supervisor would help to raise service standards. The food was tasty and well presented.

Nice place, lovely staff but unfortunately the food not great, our only choice at the the time we ate but my son had surf and turf and both the prawns and steak were overcooked.

Very sad looking Vegan burger. Was tepid, had no sauce and all a bit bland, all for the ridiculous price of £15.50...........Just because its vegan doesn't mean it shouldn't be too the same standards as the rest of the menu!

Authentic pub. Ordered fish n chips and it was made absolutely spot on. Draught beer was fresh n cold. Clean tables. Hard working and friendly staff. 5 stars well deserved. Thank you.

Bland as. The staff seemed polite but nobody seemed to managing the place, the pub seems like- you're about to get hearty home cooked meal,- and you pay for it too,! but thats not what you get. A Bit of a tourist trap i think. I dont understand how fish chips and mushy peas can have literally ZERO flavour. but it didnt. Almost all the things on our plates screamed 'from frozen' - and cheap frozen' but if your charging 17/18£ per dish you expect better. Either drop your prices to £9.95 to meet the quality if what you serve or put some effort in to the food. Also, asking for payment and a tip before youve even served the drinks is abit odd. Would not eat here again.

I would definitely not recommend this pub or the ale. I don't know who does the recruiting but you need to replace them!! What amused me was the wifi password...'happypub....I DON'T THINK SO!!! ..

We had called earlier for booking, we were a group of 7 people. They told us it is walk in, they don’t take reservations. The next day when we went in they said we need to return their table in the next half an hour. Our kids were hungry so we thought anything is better than nothing at all. When we entered, almost 5-6 tables were reserved. Didn’t understand why they didn’t want to take our reservation. When we sat at a table, ordered our food for the kids, it was almost time to leave. We were told one of the table is getting cleaned and they will be able to move us there. After 5minutes waiting, they didn’t even inform us that they had already given the table to someone else. The most chaotic experience. We chose to leave before they could show us the door, leaving food on the table because staffs were confused as well. No one to blame perhaps, but we didn’t have a pleasant time there.

Food is top notch here. The fish and chips was 👌🏼

Excellent dog friendly pub in the centre of St Davids. Good menu, food well cooked tasty and good portions. Staff very good and attentive. The local ipa was also perfect.

Decided to stop by for a quick lunch after visiting the Cathedral. As it was a "warmer" day, we noticed that the inside got a little too hot. There is also an outside seating option which was quite nice. The place has super friendly staff and the food was absolutely delicious! Also an honourable mention to the big portion size for such an affordable price! Highly recommend. ☺️

Done the rounds of St David’s pubs etc and got to say the toilets here are a disgrace! Come in all, get your act together, no excuse these days!

Typical pub food and this time I chose a plant burger. My husband had a beef lasagne. I wanted to say that you can't go wrong with a burger but unfortunately I had bad experiences with burgers too. This one was delicious! Yummy burger and ban, with some crunchy fresh red onions and lettuce, and sweetness coming from a fresh tomato and caramelised onions. Chips great, coleslaw perfect. Even on a really full and busy evening. Lasagna was great too. Service quick and good.

Food was absolutely delicious but waitresses need to be more polite and smile now and again , no tips for the grumpy ones .

Had a classic pub dinner at this place in the middle of St Davids. I had Welsh pork sausages, with veggies, and excellent mashed potatoes.

Nice pub in St Davids. There are many stairs at the garden cupboard. Coronation Chicken sandwich and cider tasted great.

Tijdens een bezoek aan St Davids zijn er mogelijkheden genoeg voor een hapje en een drankje maar ik kwam terecht bij The Bishops. Leuke bar restaurant waar je prima kunt eten en drinken. Aan de tuinkant zijn wel veel trappen maar je kunt natuurlijk ook de hoofdingang nemen.

Been here three times over the last few years including on a recent visit to St David's. Food and service were terrific and I would strongly recommend. Can't wait to go back.

booked this pub for an evening meal and was disappointed, food was below average, no atmosphere, staff were unfriendly... would not go back or recommend

It's a really good pub with good beer and food. Friendly staff and comfortable Best to book as it gets busy at peak times.

Nice wee bar and gastropub . Typical table number order at the bar type place , and can get very busy but seems to have enough tables to cope . Good location and decent scran . No complaints at all

We walked from Solva to St David's on a Sunday and were really thirsty when we arrived. The pub is in the centre of town and was serving lots of Sunday lunches. We just had a drink but were impressed how quickly the service was and how well staffed it was. Comfy seating, a great atmosphere and we were made to feel welcome and the staff thanked us when we left. Impressive. Thank you.

Very nice pub. Stunning garden at the rear. Dog friendly. Went as a group for dinner which was super tasty. Very busy when we went in so a slight wait but that gave us time to sample the great beers on offer. Staff seemed a little rushed but were friendly and polite.

We were lucky to get a table on Wednesday evening, it was rammed. Lovely meal, staff very pleasant, deserts a bit pricey though.

Dog friendly section. Food smelt really good, although did not sample. Food selection of real ale, cider, larger. Nice garden.

Solid food with a view of the cathedral tower. Had a Mexican burger that was solid but without wow. Interesting beer selection.

We visited on a busy Bank Holiday weekend for a midday meal. There was plenty of seating outside where dogs are very welcome. I chose dressed crab which was super fresh and tasty, whilst my companion's sea bream was perfectly cooked. Fir drinks we had a pleasant ale. We saw a nice selection of coffee and cake being served on other tables. The atmosphere was welcoming and service timely in spite of being busy.

Fabulous food, Ideal location for exploring St David's. Beware of souveneirs at 'tourist' prices.

It's worth booking a table if thinking of going as gets very busy.

Just a refreshment stop for us. Great selection of ales and largers. Dog friendly section and garden. No food for us but it smelt amazing and menu looks good.

We had a lovely lunch here today. The first time we visited, the bishops definitely had a great place to revisit.

From the reviews etc, we were led to believe that The Bishops is dog friendly. We were very disappointed to arrive at the door to see a sign stating the opposite. We didn't have the opportunity to appreciate the highly rated food.

Lovely pub, great food, very quiet when we visited. Friendly staff. I had chicken supreme, hubby had sausage and mash, excellent. We parked at St, David's cathedral and walked up the hill.

Came with a great recommendation but was only mediocre, menu was limited, we both had curries, they were both bland and didn’t contain much meat. I did enjoy my pint of IPA and would be back for more beer but not the food!

Fantastic establishment, traditional home cooked meals with the option of eating indoors or outdoors weather dependent with great views from outside! Cosy feel inside. Service was perfect! Highly recommended, will definitely return!

Celiacs be careful! The menu will show that some items are gluten free such as fish fingers with chips and peas but when asked the staff the chips are cooked in the same fryer as other stuff making it unsafe. Also how can fish fingers be gluten free? Apart from that, garden is lovely, drinks were great, can't fault it but if you have celiac/gluten intolerance you won't have a big choice and I wouldn't trust you won't get sick

Stopped in after a long drive down to visit family for a few cool beers and a bite to eat. Drinks fine but was miffed with being handed a card payment machine that suggested in mutiples you pay a tip? For serving drinks - really? Ordered a meal - one curry and for myself one Tradional Welsh Rarebit - I fancied a light tangy cheese on toast even thoiugh it was £14. I was presented with two slices of floppy bread covered in totally tasteless runny brie type 'cheese'. I sent the order back to hear 'I will pass on your comments'. No 'how can we recover this', nothing but poor service from a pub that seems to live from its location and tourists income with zero cunstomer care. Would I eat here again - NO.

Plenty of room inside and a largish beer garden which catchs the sun. We had a ham with mustard and tuna mayo sandwiches although door step would be a better description, loads of filling, good value for moneygood selection of beers

The perfect little pub right in the heart of St. Davids. We didn't make a reservation, but this was not a problem at all. We sat on a lovely table away from the crowds, and you ordered and paid at the bar. We had the most delicious food, I had mussels and my partner had a burger. Lovely fresh salad in the burger with cheese and a huge beef patty. I had mussels, and they were so delicious I haven't stopped talking about them since. They came with a choice of crusty bread or chip, I chose the bread which came lightly toasted, which made it so much nicer. The sauce was light and flavourful. We were just so happy with our choice after a busy morning exploring. My only reason for not giving 5* review was because a lot of the staff were not present. They were very young and needed to be trained properly before being customer facing.

We had our lunch there on the terrace in the sun facing the cathedral, it was very pleasant and we ate very well, it was delicious. You have to order at the bar. We were served quickly. I recommend without hesitation! We had the fish pie and the lamb burger and the children had the nuggets and the burger. The onion rings and garlic bread with cheese are to die for!

Great pub with great beers. A nice way to ends the day after driving for hours to get here.

Popular pub in the centre (important to book). Good service. Excellent food - good portions. Belgian chocolate pudding very rich.

Update April 2024: Still excellent. The Double Dragons is a really good session bitter and well kept. The staff are genuinely friendly and service is excellent. The Angry Dog burgers are very good, not over cooked, tasty and served with a crunchy slaw and really nice fries. Not huge, but a sensible, satisfying meal. The soundtrack is retro, but not unpleasant. There's a good size outside space for when the sun is out. Facilities are tidy and everything works. Wi-fi is quick. A brilliant place for just a cup of tea and some cake, lunch or a full blown dinner. Good specials and not wildly expensive. Will visit again. Good food, reasonable selection of beer. Nice atmosphere and pleasant staff. Not too expensive.

Atmosfera da vero pub, frequentato da abitanti del luogo, legno dappertutto, stufa accesa, ordini direttamente in cassa con le birre (locali, ottime) rigorosamente separate. Menu in linea con la tradizione gastronomica gallese (gustosa), personale giovane ed efficiente. Bella serata!

Great fish and chips, burgers, drinks, and atmosphere. We wound up here several times during our stay in St. David's, and enjoyed it every time. Staff is super friendly, too!

The food here tastes quite good, but not outstanding. Unfortunately the price is not appropriate for that. But the atmosphere is very nice and the service is also friendly.

Conclusion in advance: solid, but nothing special. We were allowed to taste the beer before ordering, which was really great. The selection of food is rather limited and offers nothing exceptional. The taste was okay, but not amazing. Unfortunately the steak was totally overpriced and all of the optional additions were unfortunately too. The remaining prices are ok.

Service was incredibly quick, which was appreciated sitting outside in the cold with a dog. Decent sized portions, food was tasty and staff were quick and efficient.

It is overall great, great food (I recommend the scampi, I have it every time), great service (it is always packed but you usually get your food within 20 minutes), kind staff and very very cosy.

Staff were very helpful, food was of good quality and service was prompt. Good selection of beers and great outside space with view of cathedral. A very popular venue for drinks and dining, best to book a table on their website.

Gastro pub. Food options were uninspiring. Had to settle for something. but what was served was decent and as described. Atmosphere was again, Ok but don't get must come here again feeling. Servers were all pleasant.

Stopped off for a hot drink after getting caught in the rain, hot chocolate and Latte both very lovely drinks. Didn't have any food, and it was early so not many people in but inside was clean with nice views of the cathedral

Excellent. Fast service, decent portions, good value and friendly service. Very clean and well kept premises. Very nice ales and a welcoming atmosphere.

We only had lunch but the soup was delicious and the ham in the sandwich was as thick as the bread.

Staff are nice enough but when we asked for some recommendations we got very little back. This review is not a criticism. If you want a solid place to eat you won’t be disappointed. But if you’re expecting something that justifies a 4-5 star rating you might be.
