This menu is full of choice and each option looks freshly cooked. The portion size is great for someone looking for a good hearty meal. Finally somewhere that knows how to stock a decent selection of cider. Proper english apple cider seems to be hard to come by these days. But what devon is not lacking in is local cider makers and The Bell Inn has clearly found these local brands. To top it all off Service was fantastic

I want to write a terrible review but I cant...If I tell you that after driving for 4hrs I received the warmest of welcomes. If I say that the atmosphere, food, beer and service was faultless and some of the best I've ever had. If I say the locals were friendly and a pleasure to meet you'll want to go to this pub. I don't want you to go. I want this pub to myself. It truly is a gift of a find and it was a pleasure to stay there. Thank-you to Lynn and the staff for being great hosts even when it might have been difficult given the circumstances. I wish you all well and hope to come back soon.

We booked a table for 5 on a Friday night at the Bell Inn following a review of the menu online. The pub is family run and was busy with diners and drinkers when we arrived. Though we were 20mins early, we were led to our table and offered the menus. We had selected this pub as the menus offered different items than your usual pub fare and had a significantly better vegetarian menu than any of the major chains. Two local ales were on tap and were very well priced as well as the usual drinks. We ordered a beef and chicken burgers, chipotle chicken and spincach and aubergine lasagne. The burgers came with a multitude of toppings which you could choose up to three. My burger came with cheese, fried onions and grilled peppers and was perfectly done, slightly crispy on the outside but juicy on the inside. The chipotle chicken was excellent coming with the best pickled cucumbers being slightly sweet. The chicken burgers were very good as well as the lasagne. We all had chips which were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Homemade coleslaw finished all the dishes apart from the lasagne. All the meals were enormous and none of us could finish them which was disappointing! We ordered a single pudding to go as there no more room! The whole experience was excellent and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. The Bell is what a good local pub is all about, friendly staff, great drinks, superb home cooked food and a lively atmosphere. I am gutted that I am not a local as I would be there all of the time! Book your table and you will not be dissappointed.

Had the pleasure of dining out at the lovely Bell Inn at Chittlehampton last week. Went there for a business meeting - but as it was lunchtime and I was starving, I decided to get some food. After looking at what was on offer, I decided to go for something that was on their specials board: the 'Greedy Pig burger, which came with chips and onion rings.About 25-minutes later, my wait was rewarded with the most amazing of sights. Stacked carefully, but quite large, was this burger that, at first glance, was obviously not your average burger. Two beautiful brioche buns contained a combination of bacon, pulled pork, cheese, and gherkins. The quantity was one thing to behold but upon biting into the meat, my tastebuds immediately alerted me to the fact that, what I was now chewing on, was indeed meat of a very high quality - and that it had been cooked expertly by someone who knew exactly what they were doing. To say the meat was simply delicious would be doing it a great disservice. It was easily the best burger I've ever had in my life; the combination of meat perfectly complemented one another, the pulled pork just melted in your mouth - with a satisfyingly smoky, yet at the same time, sweet flavour that lingered. And the. bacon was top-notch too, with a generous slice of mature cheddar cheese lying in wait to round off your burger experience with perfection. When I went to pay afterwards, I complimented the chef, and then found out from the guy at the bar that the pub uses two steamers to cook the meat - each one costing around £12k! This process, I believe, is something that is used in certain parts of the US and involves the meat being cooked for at least 12 hours. Whatever the exact methodology is used, I can easily testify that the results are out of this world!Sorry to all those other burger restaurants that have opened up in Exeter over the last five years or so, but The Bell Inn beats you all by a country mile. Based on this amazing meal, and from what my friend said about their excellent longstanding reputation, I will definitely be coming back to this place to try something else on their menu. Highly recommended!

The pub was busy for a Thursday but we were welcomed in and shown to a large table big enough to accommodate our party of 6 adults, a toddler and a baby. Between the group we all chose different meals and without exception every meal was outstanding. The waiting staff were very busy but politely kept us informed of how long our meals would be.Overall this was a fantastic family pub meal. Thanks you to all at The Bell.

I dropped by on the off chance of a table for 2 having not booked. I know - trying to get a table in Devon in August at the weekend without booking during Covid! What was I thinking? Luckily for us, even though they were booked out, after deciding to stay for a drink anyway we were offered a table. Both chose the fish and chips - sounds simple but this was not only a huge portion but the batter was so crispy and the chips were great. Your choice of mushy (yuck) or garden peas. Such lovely hard working staff - they were nonstop for the 3 hours we were there (stayed for another drink!) and smiley and friendly all the time. Great pub atmosphere too. So lucky to have this as my "almost" local now that I live in Devon.

We had been here before and it was great, so when visiting Devon again a table for 4 was booked for Sat 17th July, and telephone numbers given and a taxi for us all booked locally too. Imagine our horror after a 20/25 minute taxi ride to find that it was closed with a notice of apology outside about how sorry they were especially if anyone had travelled - we had - and we suddenly had to make different plans. No doubt if they had been open as normal and our party hadn’t turned up a phone call would have been made to check where we were. I appreciate times are difficult and probably a Covid related issue, but surely a phone call could have been made. Better still some indication on their advertising sign on the main road. There was something on the menu that suited everyone in our party despite our varied preferences. We didn’t order starters and that was just as well as the dinners were huge, no one went hungry! The food came out in good time as well. It was all clearly freshly cooked. One of our party had a burger from the build a burger menu where you could choose exactly what you wanted in it. Worked perfectly for a fussy eater! We then had desserts, cookie dough was gorgeous and so was the ice cream, portions again very generous. Many pubs have sacrificed their drinking locals in favour of turning their establishments into glorified restaurants, which is a shame if you just want a pub that retains its locals, its character and that offers good grub as well. The Bell manages to balance all these things and maintain a good family (and family run) pub that stocks excellent beers and a huge array of wines and spirits at very reasonable prices, with a full, pub grub menu, again at prices that don't make your eyes water. And if you just want to pop in for a pint, you can do that too. Visited this beautiful pub on Saturday. So loved it that my husband snd I asked if they had a room for the following Sunday night. Although they were very busy the landlord said they had one. He brought the booking diary to our table and it was clear for Sunday night. We offered a deposit and booked a table for dinner. Today Tuesday, we received a phone call from the land lady to say that they were fully booked and therefore we could not now stay. On questioning her she said it was her fault as she had forgotten to write in the booking diary. She did recommend somewhere else in the village but it would have been courteous as she admitted it was her mistake if she offered to make the booking for us. We think that this is a very poor service and why did it take three days to come back to us ? It should have been immediate. If this is how the pub considers their custom it is not worth going to. Do not trust this pub.

As other reviews have said the interior of this pub is unique - everything from a boars head, football shirts and cricket bats can be found on the wall. We are here twice in the space of four days as we were staying just over the road - we would not have come back a second time had it not been so good though! There is a varied menu and specials which change daily. On our first visit my partner had the beer battered fish and said the chips were the best he'd ever had. I had the veggie chilli which was lovely. The second time it was a Sunday and we had the slow roast lamb shoulder and the Moroccan lamb salad. Both were excellent. We enjoyed the beer and the local cider. Service at this family run pub was friendly, customer focused and efficient. Excellent Covid procedures in place and very responsive when we emailed to book a table.

Really great people and place but the food wasn’t great. Really oily fried popadum. Overcooked chicken in the curry and rubbish bhaji. Perhaps as a British Indian I’m too harsh regarding western curries....my husband’s lamb shank was ok despite a lot of garlic (5-6 entire cloves). My daughters food was dreadful - I felt so guilty when I tried her sausage - it was just fat with such a low percentage of meat and the chips were awful - very obviously frozen. I could’ve overlooked our average food but to have really really awful food for little bodies is just really sad. Sorry guys your service and welcome was great.

Hats off to the team, clearly working extremely hard under very challenging circumstances yet still managing to deliver fantastic food & brilliant service whilst keeping their customers safe. Visited for an evening meal with our 2 Italian Spinone dogs, as this pub is dog friendly. Absolutely fantastic evening from point of entering everyone was very welcoming and super friendly. The menu is great with some veggie options (for the Mrs) and superb specials board. I settled for the Ribeye and my partner had the veggie lasagna and the food was awesome. Their not shy with portions either, for a Monday night it was busy for a village pub so I'd strongly recommend that you definitely book in advance. We will definitely visit again...its great when you find a pub the is very well support by the local villagers plus some tourist trade. Keep up the great work...

Absolutely don't miss a meal here, if you're in the area!!I'm just sad we don't live very close. Gorgeous village, a must see! Pub has a great space - outside and conservatory and bar lounge tables, so plenty of choice where to sit (gets busy though so book a table!) orchard, pool room and kids play area (set well away so still comfy for adults to sit outside) Brilliant menu, staff couldn't do enough to help, polite, friendly, nothing too much trouble. Atmosphere in pub was still that of a jolly local, despite it clearly being such a popular place! We had curries and lasagne. Amazing portions, homemade hearty grub. I'll be raving about this place for a long time yet.

Set in the square of a surprisingly bigger village than I first expected and it was pleasantly busyish given it was a Weds eve. Ok so the decor isn't to everyones tastes i'm sure, with the taxidermy, and some of those were funky victorian crossbreeds. For me I liked it. Homely pleasant environment without being prententious, just a good country pub. Out the back was a great conservatory area and an amzing garden going off the rear, all newly renovated. Dinner was great, service was equally so. Portion sizes very good. Surprisingly I went for Korma, although fully expecting a rather bland creamy affair this has curry leaves and cinnamon stick, amazing, particulalrly with the side dish of chilli to zip it up a bit more. Very accommodating and overall would definitely go back. Gutted the pheasant had sold out but we were happy with other options available.

Lynn specifically really made our night great to ensure we were seated in more comfortable places. The staff behind the bar also had a friendly smile and made us feel welcome.

We dined here tonight, a beautiful, quaint old pub with a conservatory and garden for children and dogs all welcome. Set in a lovely village with parking on the square opposite. Quality of steak was one of the best I have ever tasted. Service and welcome faultless. Wished we were here longer as we would certainly be back there.

Whilst holidaying in Devon we visited this pub for Sunday lunch and the food was superb, the staff were very friendly and the service was excellent. They also have a massive outdoor beer garden with a play area so added bonus if you have children and a dog like us. We enjoyed it that much that we went back.

On arrival we were greeted with a very warm greeting, the atmosphere was very positive and we were immediately shown to a table. However, when our food arrived we found that the onion rings and chips were very greasy and crunchy as if they had been over fried. This did leave us feeling rather sick and bloated.

I stopped here for lunch and the food is excellent. I had a chickpea burger and it was very good, it tasted homemade. The beer is well kept with 2 guest ales. I also noticed the selection of spirits behind the bar is very extensive, one of the largest in the area. The interior of the pub is very historical and immaculately maintained. The village of chittlehampton is interesting as well, with a massive church around a village square.

We have been going to the Bell for 15 years and frankly they are consistently spot on.Very good real ale selection. wine and spirit. Food is very good and not expensive. Service is excellent! The building is a classic, and the surroundings are set in a very beautiful village square of thatched houses and a stunning church. Out back is a large beer garden with a view! If your coming to North Devon on holiday a visit to the Bell is a must.
