With new management the Bell Inn has really improved. Was already a pub with potential but with the refurb and friendly staff, its a great place for a bite to eat (great pizzas) and great for families with loads of out door space. Inside is cosy and welcoming. Looking forwards to our next visit!

We stayed at The Bell, initially for 3 nights but were keen to extend it to 5 and fortunately Eddie was able to let us. The rooms were immaculately clean and the bed was the most comfortable one we have ever slept in. Eddie and all the staff were charming and welcomed us. Hope to be able to stay again when we visit Essex.

I have been coming to this pub for the last 5 years and have loved it! Even more so with the new refurbishment. However, i was incredibly disappointed with the customer service i received after a mistake made when ordering a drink, i may have said one drink but could have said the one i want which is a genuine error perhaps, i was then instructed by the bar staff man while he was chuckling that i would have to pay for the miss pour pint which i was shocked at if i’m being honest especially with the cost of the pint being over £4 when the cost of the pint to the pub is substantially lower. Was incredibly disappointed with how this experience went with the member of staff

Our roast dinners were a cut above the norm, but there is nothing pretenious or fancy about this little gem. We sat for hours enjoying the company of the lovely staff and locals, and the talented chef! Our favourite type of pub, loved it, will be back. Did I mention the food was fabulous?!

We met each other in this pub. We drank there regularly. We loved it, but we moved away. We returned recently. I don't understand how they can get things so wrong. A couple ordering food had to send it back as it was stone cold (it wasn't busy). The beer has always been amazing. Not now. Both the Adnams and Landlord were atrocious. Ended up drinking Carlsberg as the safest bet. Lovely to see a couple of old friends who told us about the new management. They haven't got a clue and it's really sad. I hope they get a grip soon.

Well talk about false advertising the pub is nothing like the review on trip advisor, we rang and booked a table for two when we arrived all they were serving were pizza. The pub didn't look like it could serve the food on the site all I can think of is that this pub must have gone through a change of management. I would not take a dog in there to eat very pub not much restaurant. If you want a good beer this is ideal. But they should not advertise it's a restaurant when it clearly is not.

Lovely beer garden. Play area for the children. Free range chickens. Beautiful spot. Pizza for the children was honestly perfect. Red stripe on tap was great. Bad points. Service was pretty average. Mixed roast was an absolute let down. meat well under cooked including pork and well over priced for such a small meal. Small dish of vegetables to be shared between two people. Has potential to be a great pub. We will return as a family but we will stay away from the roast and stick with pizza next time.

We decided that following the easing of lockdown rules that we would go back to the bell as my last meal before going away with work for 7months, I almost wish we hadn’t bothered. We booked online but they didn’t get the confirmation and said when we called that they don’t book as there’s loads of room... Walked to the bar and stood whilst the bloke behind it typed away on his phone and then walked off, the girl running it then appeared and apologised, got us our drinks and took menus over to a table for us. Service was very slow - it was as if she was running it on her own! The food itself wasn’t bad although there was no pizzas on or steak so the menu was fairly limited. The mains arrived before the starters had been cleared and then came without any cutlery. What I really objected to was the bar full of young lads staring as we went to the bar to pay and the guy behind the bar continuing to chat to his mates rather than serve us, eventually and quite rudely asked if we wanted drinks. Hugely disappointing experience and I will be spending my money supporting some of the better served pubs in the area. A pity, as we used to enjoy the bell inn.

Started off well as i booked online. Only to have no confirmation email, I called them to be told they don't use the online system. I booked a table. When we turned up for lunch, they didn't ask my name, we could sit anywhere and i didn't need to bother booking at all. On entering the garden, a man yelled at us to get our masks on; absolutely no idea if he worked there, scruffy man leaning against a shed. Garden looked like a gyspy camp, unlevel wobbly tables, lots of rubbish leaning up against the building. We waited 20 mins, no one came, not even a sighting of anyone so we left. The most strange experience. We won't be going back, it didn't feel safe for the children and it looked like everyone else there was waiting for service.

We initially turned up and was greeted by a man who seemed, as you could say very over confident with himself that this was the best pub and everyone wants good fast service and thats what they offer...well we ordered 3 drinks which took 20 minutes and he forgot the third one which then took another ten minutes which was actualy pretty funny. We then went up to the bar and asked if we could have service and was told to sit back down. 15 minutes later no service so went back to the bar and asked again and told again sit back down. Another 15 minutes went by and the chef had to come out the kitchen to serve us.We notices a lot of young people there who actually looked under age were all being served and I stood up to get something out my pocket and was told firmly to put a mask on...when there was about 20 youngsters all standing at the bar with no masks on.I could go on and on and on but it was obviously a clicky pub who only wanted to serve their friends and no one else. Their friends had no rules but everyone else did. If your lookimg for good service please dont go here.

Went here with wife, kids and two friends for lunch. This is a difficult review to write, because on one hand the staff were chirpy and friendly, the food was fine, and kids pretty much loved it. We were seated outside in a large marquee, but there is a wider pub garden, play equipment, chickens and a large (safely fenced off) pond. So lots for kids to do. On the other hand, at one end of the garden - the end closest to the pub - is a huge pile of housed rubbish and junk and electrical wires, which was not an appealing vista and felt dangerous for kids exploring

This is the first time myself and my partner had been to this pub after being recommended by friends and we are so happy we went. The pub has a massive garden and currently they work from an built up outside bar which looks very impressive and nothing like I’ve seen before in a small country pub. The highlight of our visit however, was the staff. The bar girl (Becca) was so warm and welcoming and did everything with a smile and did everything she could to cater to our needs (my partner has severe allergies to a number of things so eating out is always a bit of a nervous experience for us). She even made sure to double check the ingredient lists on the snacks we asked for (which not many other bar staff do, we normally have to check for ourselves). She seemed very knowledgeable and put us at ease. The only slight downside was that they seem to have some sort of construction work going on at the moment in one part of the garden which did bring down the overall look of the pub, however I’m excited to come back in the near future too see what becomes of it! An absolute gem of a pub!

We haven't eaten here for a while so this was a long overdue return. We were quite a large party with several small children. The welcome was very warm and there was a great atmosphere in the bar. We had a few drinks by the fire before we ordered our food. Mainly roasts and one veggie option. The order came out quickly and was a very high standard. I doubt there are better Yorkshire puddings in Essex! A couple of our party also had desserts which were lovely. Excellent service and good value for the area. We highly recommend.

Came today with my partner for Sunday roast. We have eaten in here.a few times and loved it have also recommended it to lots of people. I ordered the roast pork partner ordered roast beef and asked for it to be well done! Always has asked wherever we go and in the menu it states you can have how you like. Dinner came looked lovely but as we started to tuck in all vegetables were cold. The small bar area was qiete busy so we just hoped we'd be asked if everything was ok. Partners beef had blood running out of it and blood went into the cold vegetables. Yorkshire was lovely so started to eat this whilst awaiting staff to come over but nothing! Hubby pushed plate to one side as now feels sick to touch it. I ate Yorkshire and my meat can't eat cold veg but was so hungry. I eventually went up and discreetly asked young girl if I can have a word. Explained everything to her and she was so polite and apologiesd and went off to see if it was the cooks error or the lady who took our order. The lady who took our order comes to our table with an attitude asking what's the problem. Once again we explain and she can see two full plates. "You must have said it when my back was turned" was her reply!! Er no we are not in the habit of talking to people's behinds you just didn't hear no problem but we can't eat plus it was cold was waiting for you to pop over to check our meals were ok as usual standard in most places. "I was on my break" again snotty woman wants to row!! I don't do drama just we are still hungry. Told to pay for one meal and drinks I explained it's not been eaten but snotty woman now irritating me so want to just get up pay and go and not come back. Shame as we come a lot in summer with family to sit in the lovely garden, she then goes off to talk about us to a guy making us feel so awkward. Nice lady to make people feel like they've done something wrong. We pay the bill and go then stop at the Indian in Newport for a takeaway. Sunday dinner works out expensive. Such a shame as really liked it here and everyone makes mistakes but apologise and move on! Don't make people pay for something that was horrible.

Enjoyed dining here prior to a ‘Britstop’ over-night stay in our Motorhome. Lovely, welcoming Staff & friendly locals. Surprisingly limited Menu.We both opted for the Bangers & Mash ( or Chips ) Veg & Gravy. It was very okay, but sadly let-down by undercooked, poor-quality Sausages. They weren’t fatty ( always a danger with cheap ones ) - just plain tasteless & boring. Isn’t it sensible to BUY THE BEST BANGERS available & give a simple meal the ‘wow’ factor.?!

This is a great stop for us and we really appreciate these kind of overnight stops, the outside pizza cooking is good and the inside of the pub has charm. The guys preparing the pizzas need some food hygiene training and aren't really aware of people watching them eating the pizza ingredients and licking their fingers constantly. Luckily the pizzas go in a hot oven.

Situated in a delightful village, this pub is full of old village pub character with a lovely big open fire......but it is in much need of attention to improve the customer experience. For example the cushions on the benches were very old, flat and lack any comfort factor! We went here for a family meal, it's roughly halfway between my sister & brother in laws home and mine. We'd booked a table for dinner as it's a fair way to travel. Upon arrival we discovered that they don't serve food on a Thursday as there's a pizza van. You can imagine the drama when they found that's someone had actually booked us as we were in the diary! To their absolute credit they accepted their error and opened the kitchen especially for us. The food was wonderful and they were really apologetic over the mix up. I had a burger which was lovely and juicy, flavourful and cooked beautifully. We all enjoyed our meals and the range of 5 real ales was great. Good wines as well. All in all they made what could have been a disaster into a fantastic evening. Definitely a place to go back to another time - though next time I'm not driving so I can do justice to the ale selection

This has always been a "family friendly" pub as it has a large garden and lots of outside eating and drinking space. The new management seem to have taken this a stage further and made the bar a children's area too.On the evening we visited there were small children in the bar (the licensee's family) and a very large TV showing Peppa Pig. As we had no interest in children's TV we sat outside.I see from other reviews that this is a conscious effort to make it a child friendly pub, so it will definitely be crossed off our list

That was OK as New Bar man showing some people round as apparently now owned by someone else. Old Owners I was told charging High rent and previous people RENTING not able to make viable profit. Shame as they were a good couple and son. Also told Owners never invested in pub typical just in it for Money. So not able to have any food just drink which was fine and meant went to next village had fantastic service and food yummy so did us a favour Bell not in action. Not sure if open to food yet but told New Owner should be OK.

Can't really offer a proper review as we had gone to eat based on the reviews here but unfortunately the management had changed last week and so no food was on.offer. Pub itself is a lovely old building with wood wormed beams and smelt like the open fire was lit. I hope the new management do well but don't expect to get the pie or wood fired pizza just yet. Best to ring first to find out if on offer.

Decided to give this place a try after visiting Audley End based on reviews on here. So glad we did - I think we were lucky to get there early doors and on a lovley saturday evening so many people were eating outside so we managed to get a table without pre-booking. Very friendly and the "Bell Pie" is amazing. Garden is fantastic with great play equipment. Will definitely be pre-booking a table and pie and returning again.

Great sausages - sourced from butchers in Saffron Walden; perfectly cooked eggs and a great choice of ales to wash it all down.

We are regulars to this fantastic pub. Simon and Jan always make us feel very welcome. Lovely fresh home cooked food at very reasonable prices. The pizzas are cooked in front of you on a wood fired oven. In the warmer weather the garden is very big and safe for little ones, with play areas. I cannot recommend this pub enough. If you want a lovely home cooked food in a beautiful pub then give it a go.

This is a lovely pub! We went at Sunday lunch time and ordered pizzas which are made in a proper wood-fired oven. They really do taste like proper Italian pizzas which we haven't found anywhere since moving here from Rome. Highly recommend the 4 Cheese one and the garlic and Mozzarella bruschetta - delicious! Lovely big garden too for kids. Also reasonably priced.

Really like this small pub, its got the looks of a proper English pub, with friendly staff too! We normally travel from Saffron Walden to have the Bell Pie which is amazing (Worth ringing up to check they have enough). We find the price very reasonable too. Defiantly worth a visit, plus only a 10 min walk from the train station

Gorgeous old country pub with good selection of real ales and lagers, although there's a suggestion the choice of guest ales are driven by the landlord's own tastes in bitters rather than the punter's, as they always tend to be of the same type when I've been in there. Great big garden out the back for kids, with a recently introduced wood burning pizza wagon which makes stunningly good authentic Italian pizzas of all types and sizes (you can take away as well), which cook within 2 mins so the kids don't have to wait too long. Good selection of other pub grub from the kitchen, as well as very good Sunday roasts. Great winter pub with roaring fire and low oak beams with buzzy conversational atmosphere. Well worth a visit. Only a short walk from Audley End station. Tempted to give a 5 star except for the aforementioned guest ales. But that might just be my tastes getting in the way.

Lovely pub in Wendens Ambo. It has a huge garden which is great for children. The real ales are kept well and the food is great. We recently visited and enjoyed pizzas made in the new wood fired oven. I can't recommend them enough!

Dropped in on Sunday evening for a quick drink at this beautiful Country pub with my wife. On holiday from Australia in this beautiful part of the world. Was greeted with super friendly hosts and locals and we spent a couple of hours having great conversations. Has a lovely grassed area set up for kids and overall a lovely feel.We did not eat at the pub however I am sure you will enjoy the atmosphere at this great pub.

Have come past here dozens of times as on one of my favourite motorcycle routes from Baldock. It says to book for Sunday lunch - but as it was after 2, we chanced it. Some of roasts were sold out but the beef was very good and plentiful. Puddings excellent too! For £12 for a roast and pudding, I can highly recommend it ,

Great friendly, cosy English pub with a good selection of food at a very reasonable price. I think the previous review of the meal being 'pricey and small portions' has obviously reviewed the wrong place as it was just the opposite.Really lovely, spacious gardens as well.

Visiting family in Saffron Walden I looked for a celebration meal in a gastro pub with some character for the previous reviews showed the Bell filled the bill in both the building and the quality of food.A table for three was booked days in advance for a 7-30 meal and we duly arrived at 7-15 in this wonderful old pub built in 1576 with nooks and crannies and beams in abundance.Busy bar with just one barman serving we waited 10 minutes patiently before ordering pre-dinner drinks and asked where we could find our booked table. The barman explained they were very busy with food orders and we would have to wait some 40 minutes and could sit where we liked. No other membres of staff were available to ask or show us to our table, we finished our drinks and at 8-10 looked for the restaurant which was just off the bar and found just one large table of about 12 guests waiting for their meals with a table in the lovely fireplace arch clearly set for three persons. We occupied the table and waited for service, no one came so in desperation with a taxi booked to take us home at 9-45 I approached the barman and asked if we could order wine and meals promptly as we had waited now nearly an hour for attention. He was very apologetic said they were very busy with the other table and quickly brought our wine and took the food order. Our starters were broccoli and stilton soup beautifully made and presented with two fresh granary rolls and butter and prawn cocktails for my daughter and son in-law which were large portions and again well presented. Our main courses Sirloin steak, Thai Green Curry, and Chicken Peri Peri were thoroughly enjoyed by all three of us. My curry was perfectly cooked in the true Thai manner with subtle taste of aromatic spices. As we were now close to our taxi booking we had no time for dessert and had to leave. What a great pity the service let down quality meals and although I am not often down in this part of the world my family eat out often and will be reluctant to book again unless the lack of waiting staff improves. In my view the overall rating on the food should be excellent but the service level reduces this to average.

Never a bad meal, pricey and a little reserved on the portion front, you will need starters and possibly dessert but the service is fantastic, second to none, which makes the place!

Good ale and a great Sunday roast in a really welcoming local pub with a warm fire on a cold February day. The large garden with play equipment for kids would be great in summer although there is a fair bit of road noise outside from the nearby M11.

Great cosey little pub. Stayed all afternoon and evening watching rugby 6 nations with locals. Baguette for lunch then steak for dinner, my husband had the Bell pie. All really tasty and served hot. Large garden, dogs welcome. Very quaint with lots of beams and character, set in a very pretty village. We will be back.

A lovely pub, based on the recommendation in the good pub guide we did a cross country walk for a couple of miles to visit. Lovely real fire and good beer, wine all at reasonable prices. The only slight negative was the bread with the ploughmans lunch was stale and rock hard. Wouldn't hesitate to go back though.

Lovely pub, staff very nice, I had trout terrine for starters, never got my soda bread, forgot to ask for it, but I didn't enjoy that, I had the Sunday lunch, roast beef, two thick slices which were cooked to perfection, the roast potatoes weren't crispy and seemed like new potatoes cooked in a deep fat fryer, the rest of the food on the plate was perfect, for desert I had apple and pear crumble, but the pears were quite hard, and strangely came with chocolate ice cream, I thought vanilla would have been better. Summing up, I'd definitely go back, but I'd only have the main course, if I was marking it on that, I would have given it five stars.

The service was excellent - a bit of a wait but I was warned about it as I ordered Iced blueberry matcha latte. The staff were very polite and quick. And I absolutely loved the matcha made for me!! 👍
