I had the wild boar sausages. The food is standard, nothing to rave about. There was a lack of atmosphere at the time we went. There was a female waitress who had such a poor attitude, not welcoming or friendly at all. I had the waffles for dessert and it was pretty disgusting if I'm honest. My overall opinion is that the food is over rated and over priced for what it is. I didn't try the beer, so maybe that's the selling point but personally I would not go back. Plenty ofnicer places to eat in Norwich, with better service and atmosphere.

First time at the Belgian Monk today for lunch, didn't have a booking but a table was available. The liver & bacon was delicious & my wife had the pork belly (which she said was better than one she tried the other week elsewhere) a very good selection of beers, tried a couple I've never had before & was superb. Two mains for £25.... excellent value for money!! Staff were very friendly. Will definitely return.

I visited with my Dutch friends on 24th January. The food was great. Waiter service was exceptional. Atmosphere good (rather noisy when party of about 12 men came.) My only negative was the woman who greeted us. She was rather brusque and abrupt in her greeting and not welcoming in her manner.

Standards have slipped since the change of ownership. The beer list is noticeably shorter, and it is a minefield trying to find the ones they have in stock. Beer used to be served in the right glass, and now often it isn't. Kwak without the wooden stand is not really Kwak ;-). The food is OK, bitterballen, fries and mayonnaise go well with the beer, and there are always mussels. The menu is shorter than it used to be, which normally helps, but the quality is slipping. Fruits de mer mussels used to have lots of seafood, but on our last visit, there was barely any. The seats out the back are worth grabbing if they're in the sun, but they have covered seating with heaters if not.

This is of the best restaurants we’ve been to this year. We’re based in London and were in town for a short trip. Very impressed with the huge range of quality Belgian beers. We went in a party of 7, for Sunday lunch. The staff were very pleasant and attentive, however some of our chosen draught beers were unavailable so we were offered a bottled alternative costing £6 for 330ml. Everyone ate all of their meals, my meatballs were nice, the potatoes in the tartiflette were reported to be undercooked, but edible, and the roast dinners were a bit cold. Desserts were all fine, there were no hot drinks available as the machine had broken! The atmosphere was quite good, it's a lovely old building, but the chairs became uncomfortable after a while as they are wooden without any cushions.

We were there lunch time today. Didn't start too well with the receptionist/waitress. It was tipping down with rain and I said we would rather not sit outside. She obviously had no sense of humour and snapped at me you can sit over there. The meal was wonderful, no complaints there. My partner ordered an Irish coffee along with a sweet. She ask me to taste the coffee. Very week coffee with no hint of whisky. I called the waitress over and asked her to try the Irish coffee. She said she couldn't as she didn't like whisky. I said that was no problem as there wasn't any in it. She said there definitely was as she had made it herself. She did change it and it was okay. I asked for the bill and when it arrived I noticed there was a discretionary service charge. The waitress came back with the card terminal with the service charge already inputted in the machine. I told I was not paying the service charge. Her indignant retort was I should have said I was not going to pay the service charge when I asked for the bill. How I was supposed to know about the discretionary service before I got the bill is beyond me. A very nice meal spoilt by a very unprofessional waitress, which is a shame as I have always enjoyed the Belgium Monk.

Walked past many times, usually with the family, none of whom are keen on this sort of food. So when I found myself at a loose end in town and hungry, I thought I'd give it a go. Was able to get a table for one as a walk-in just after midday, but it was otherwise booked up so they must be doing something right. I love beer but I don't drink alcohol anymore, so naturally I went straight to the alcohol-free beer section which consisted of...one beer, Jupiler, which is a half-decent Belgian af pilsner. Given that there are loads of nice and varied Belgian af beers available now, this is a pretty poor show given that most standard pubs stock a range of af beers, some on tap. Now, the food. I didn't know that it was two for £25 Monday - Wednesday on many main courses. That makes it great value. Nonetheless, I didn't feel too bad paying £19 for a huge bowl of moules marinière which came with a vast cone of excellent chips and a decent chunk of baguette. The sauce was decent - good depth of flavour - but it was hard to get to in these very deep bowls. I prefer a wider, shallower pot as served in some places I've been to. The mussels themselves were a bit of a let-down, being puny of size, if plentiful. With the beer and tip, it was ~£26 all in and I was stuffed - uncomfortably so, to be honest. If I were to go again, I would choose the starter size which is £13 and comes without chips. £26 isn't exactly a cheap lunch, and while it was enjoyable enough I don't think I'd hurry back, at least until they've upped their af beer game.

I think the place has been taken over and it really has gone down hill. We tried to go in for a quick drink over Christmas and whilst it wasn't busy we were told we couldn't sit on any of the available tables (unless we were eating) and we would have to drink in the courtyard, in the rain... Unfortunately the Belgian monk has gone down the swannie under the new management. The place should be somewhere to enjoy Belgian beers with good food available but they are now only bothered about diners. As a result they have ruined the atmosphere as it is very quiet and subdued even when “full” of diners. You’re not allowed to drink at the bar and the tables are only for people ordering food. Didn’t eat but the food did not look good so won’t be returning. A real shame.

The landlady asked if we could move to the bar as the table was booked in 15 mins - which we of course said yes to. Went to the bar and ordered another drink. Owner served us no problem, stood at the bar and were drinking. when a friend arrived and he said he had to go outside as they were 'fully booked' and busy - even though there was only us at the bar. A friend asked nicely if our newly arrived could stay with us and he shouted and then him, chucked a tenner at him and said get out. The owner was violent, rude and it was a horrible experience. Visited the Belgian Monk for an evening meal to partake in the Christmas Menu on offer this month. My wife and I had the three course meal for £39. And we were not disappointed. The food was hot and well presented and exactly what we expected. I had the mussel chowder for starter and the Xmas themed tartiflette for mains whilst my wife had the hake fish. The service was good and friendly and having read the previous reviews people have left I don't understand the comments of some people. Firstly it's a city pub known for its quality belgian beers. You pay for quality and its reflected in the price. Also the service charge is automatically added yes, but you can ask for this to be removed if you prefer to give a cash tip. The staff are not offended if you ask. They do work hard and I have no issues with the service given. Really enjoyable meal for my wife's birthday so thanks for making it really. special. 10/10. Wasn't so keen on the Yorkshire pud, but I think that's down to personal preference - I prefer smaller non crispy as opposed to large. Can also recommend the cheesecake. We ate risotto and a vegetarian tartiflette potato/cheese dish. The risotto was bland, dry, served in a very basic way and undercooked. The tartiflette was better, but also not great. I had expected something richer and creamier. The bread served alongside was very low quality. The food was very expensive for what it was. Many of the beers are currently £11-12/pint effectively, which I also find expensive. Great beers though, respect to the Belgian Brouwmeester.

This was a tough one. We had a long delay in getting our starters, but it was 19:30 on a Friday night. So I started to read the Trip Advisor reviews whilst waiting and some recent reviews were quite concerning. However, when the starters arrived they were great. OK, being picky the marnieres cream sauce with the moules could have had a little more zing above the cream, but it was fine. Ham and cheese croquettes were fab. The waiter said our mains were on there way but there would be a delay which we said was OK. We were then expecting a long delay but the mains arrived within a very acceptable 10 mins so he just under promised and over delivered. Mains were excellent. Being slight picky the Tartiflette was a little light on the Roblechon for my taste as I’m a big fan. As a signature dish, I had big expectations though. But we did have a very warm welcome and attentive staff (I think we had about 5 different servers though). Great beer choice, great atmosphere. A few refinements and a 5 star review is possible.

In my opinion, the Belgian monk, isn't as good as it use to be, we visited for a meal as we've had great meals in the past, however there seemed to be a more limit menu, however we both for a tartiflette, one fish and one with spicy sausage with black pudding, I had one prawn and one peice of small salmon in the fish dish, with lots of sause, and we found three slices of sausage and a few cubes is black pudding in the other dish, and the size was much reduced from last time we visited, taste was very nice. The beer menu has Chimay on the front and inside, but they no longer sell it, disappointing.... It's still a nice place to visit, however I felt I did not get value for money for 15-16 pounds a meal with very small amount of filling. Service was attentive, chairs uncomftable, pricy food for quantity and quality.

Well known in the city for its range of Belgian beers and its food. We were a party of four and seated in the bar area. Quite expensive beers but starting around £5 for a half but you probably know this when you go so no problems there. But as for the food service, where do I start?. One guy ordered a starter to have as his main but this was brought out as a starter leaving him to eat on his own as the rest of us didn't have starters. In isolation no big deal and the lady serving was apologetic but that's just the beginning. Probably over a one and a half hour wait for food for the remaining three. Again maybe not that terrible in a busy place but a couple just there for a quick meal might have been a bit disappointed. My meal of burger and chips was lukewarm at best, cheap chips that looked nothing like those served at another table. Burnt piece of bacon (extra 2 quid) and goodness knows who nicked the cheddar cheese that was meant to be there, rather limp salad also included. We decided to have a bottle of wine, mismatched glasses arrived still wet. As it was getting so late due to the delays instead of moving on we later had another bottle of wine (ordered at the bar as table service seemed to be suspended), no fresh glasses offered so we had to recycle the mismatched ones. We paid the bill which included a rather optimistic service charge of 12.5%. The service charge was a dilemma as the lady looking after us had been pleasant enough and the food quality was obviously not her fault. Also most really don't want the confrontation of asking for the charge to be removed, a fact that restaurants are well aware of. Maybe we were unlucky, maybe those in the restaurant get a better experience, its hard to know. However I wont be going back and find it hard to believe that at this price point this is the standard the business feels can be acceptable or in the long term viable.

We have been to the Belgian monk a few times and always had really good food but sadly this time we were left disappointed and hungry. Atmosphere- pop music in a Belgian pub. I have ran a Belgian pub before and pop music was never played. Especially missy Elliot and Taylor swift. The pub was freezing and the lady loo’s are just unfit for purpose and a hazard. Service - was slow and we could only see a few staff in, so we could understand the small delay in the drinks but not the waiting time on food. We waited over 40 minutes for our main after what was the most disappointing Camembert and what was not cranberry jam, they served pickle. The pork belly roast was so disappointing. I don’t understand how you can really mess up Sunday dinner. Over cooked roasted potatoes, soggy carrots, rock hard parsnips, red cabbage that was cold, over cooked broccoli and the small amount of gravy. The majority of the main was freezing. Only warm food on our plate was the pork and even then it had a really long hair in my Mine. My hair is brown and purple. This hair was jet black and I had to pull it from the meat in my mouth. The manager did take my meal off the bill. Overall, horrible experience, and considering we were the first people through the door at 12, I am shocked. I spent the afternoon vomiting after this meal

I went in for my first visit with lots of hope and unfortunately I was disappointed. To be fair the staff were all very pleasant and helpful but that is about the only positive I am going to add. Firstly the beer. I am a bit of a Belgian beer aficionado- especially the fruit beers l. They had a wide and varied selection on the menu but the first five chosen they had all run out of so I had to revert to a Kwak and then a standard Kriek. For a place that specialises in everything Belgian I would’ve expected that the vast majority of the beer menu would be available but the fruit beer was not. Secondly the food - we ordered the Tartiflette Espana - one for each of us. It was almost like two different dishes turned up. One had lots of lardons and hardly any chorizo, the other had lots of Chorizo and only one lardon. In addition to this these seemed to be the least cheesy tartiflettes I had every encountered - two sorry cubes were having a melting attempt on the top of the dish but they were very small. We would’ve had dessert here but having been so disappointed we decided to leave. It is also worth pointing out there is a service charge payable here on the bill - albeit discretionary. Having explained my disappointment to the waitress at the end of the meal I said I would pay for the meal but not the service charge as I really didn’t think it was worth it. It is supposed to be a specialist Belgian restaurant but please - get your beer supply lines sorted out and get your dishes consistent. On the way out I did notice lots of other people with tartiflette dishes all of which seemed to have very little cheese on them so perhaps it is just possibly the style of this restaurant but it is certainly not the style I am used to.

I really wanted to like this pub but apparently you can't mix food with the pub experience. So we were sent outside, which isn't a dining experience but we weren't allowed to sit inside because we were eating. The Belgian menu was a bit uninspiring but that could be because we weren't feeling it at the time.

Wow. I thought I had gone to Brugges six weeks early. This really has the correct atmosphere, beer range and ambience to have been an authentic Belgian bar. Two flights and some superb draft beer, authentic decor plus excellent food menu all combined to make this a very pleasant afternoon visit. If only there were more like this in Kent

Been here many times back in the day but having moved away decided on a return visit to see family. It’s a great location and historic building. Booked a table upstairs. The drinks have strong prices around £4.50 for a half pint but the new options didn’t really offer much taste. The new owners were stressed & bickering but the main staff were lovely Sadly the food was poor. Meatballs bland & had bone in. The fish n chips were cheap and vinegar is given in a sachet. The mussels were nice but the crusty bread has been replaced with cheap industrial baguettes. The toilets were grim and not revamped in 15 years. The charm of the place has been lost sadly it was all below average.

Let me put the 3 stars into context immediately… I’m into my beer, and when a venue advertises that they are the only U.K. ‘ambassador’ for a beer, I want to visit to try that beer. Said beer in this case was Pais Deux, however on arrival we found that the beer was off. There goes the first star. I then looked at the draught guest beers to find the all time classic Delirium. That was off too. There goes the second star. So I ordered a bottle of Belgian IPA from Prearis, which tasted tired and old. Upon asking to see the bottle, it was out of date by 3 months. There goes another star. That being said they did change it for an in date one so *ping* that star is back! The food? It was decent, a fairly ‘classic’ Belgian offering with some straight up traditional dishes (fish & chips and burgers) Unfortunately the place was relatively empty but we did book in advance and this is advisable on a weekend Also, I’m not a fan of automatic service charges being added to bills, I’d much rather reward the service if it was good (it was). Kudos for also giving us a bottle of beer to take away as an apology for the missing draught beers. Worth a visit if you like this sort of thing, just don’t get your hopes up on the beer offering

The wife and i entered the pub and received a lovely warm welcome from Clive. We find this type of welcome very rare these days when entering pubs, restaurants etc. It meant a lot to both of us and he is a credit to the place. Keep up the good work, Clive. We will certainly be returning.

I have been eating at The Belgian Monk for years and it was always outstanding but it's rapidly gone down. We visited Saturday evening and our waiter was lovely. We didn't get his name but is at Uni. Great guy. My Moules were nice but the Frites have been dummed down and are now really cheap and tasteless. My partner ordered a tartiflette with 3 types of sausage. It was 90% potato and dull and 1 type of sausage. BUT the toilets..... disgusting. Broken flush, broken toilet roll holder, dirty washbasin and very grim indeed. We won't be back again.

Enjoying beer with the Belgian menu. There is a wide range of beer options. However, the beer you order comes in half a glass... That's the Belgian style. Since they like to drink it fresh, they enjoy it in half a glass. It certainly doesn't make sense. Half a glass ends in two. And the price is much more expensive. They have created an area in the backyard where you can enjoy your meal and drink your beer. Schnitzel was overcooked and dry. French Fries absorbed the oil and burned slightly It is one of the quiet places you can visit if you come to Norway. The price-benefit ratio is not above average.
