The location is excellent to theatreland as we visit on a regular basis to see various shows. The food is good and there is plenty to choose from. Drinks menu has a good selection of cocktails some of which are new. Tje Bear and Staff service is first class as the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The only downfall is the toilets are in the basement but no matter.

Had a great time in this quaint pub in Leicester Square on Saturday with my wife, her cousin and his wife. Tried the Camden Hells lager - very good! Plus when we asked if we could buy the unique Camden Hells pint glasses (with the eyes on them ) the kind bar staff said we could have them with their complements! How good is that!

Horrible… Horrible beer, horrible food, poor care of the pub outside. Disorganised and sticky tables. I was unable to drink the pub IPA and the pie (steak/IPA) looked awful, was all air and no substance, watery like the beer and diabolically presented. The crust was a tad fossilised and again inedible. The mash was just plastic and sad and even my daughter pulled a face when she tasted it. The carrots had clearly just given up after what I imagine was a less than satisfactory and clearly harrowing life and now hoped only for death. Now to be fair I saw other food that looked half decent and those in the know went for the burger it seems, BUT, it’s a big one… that’s no excuse for a recommended on the menu meal. I’m from the north and we love our pies… that was in my opinion no pie and it was not reassuringly expensive. Just Don’t. 😫

A real eye-opener. A pub in the Leicester Square area with really good food and excellent drinks. Nice vibe too! Keep up the good work. We had fish pie (to satisfy a gluten intolerance) and Chicken and chorizo. Both were of an excellent standard. Drink were cider on tap and a Spanish lager (Madri).

This review is in response to your version of events and excuse to my original review, I had given a bad review after your manager turned off the FA cup quarter final match between MUFC and LFC, your response claiming as it was ST Patrick’s day and music was more appropriate to the revellers that were now flooding in and people enjoying Sunday roasts is a tall story at best, the TV is tiny in the corner of the pub behind the far end of the bar and had no sound on, music was already playing at a low volume, there were no revellers as you’ve said only a very mixed crowd of people, some eating some drinking quietly and some watching the match (note you had the Chelsea match on prior to the Utd match ) tbh your response is not a surprise given the lack of respect your manager showed me that day, he clearly saw I was watching the match and very clearly heard me call out to him a he scurried away down the stairs knowing I was going to ask why he’d turned the match off, and to say something was lost in communication when I asked two further members of staff to turn the TV back on is ridiculous, I wasn’t speaking broken English or using hieroglyphics to demonstrate what I wanted to convey . Poor form from your manager plain and simple, you’d be better placed to accept he personally didn’t want the match on and so turned it off in a selfish arrogant I’m the manager I’ll do as I please manner as was what he did. PS the table we were sat at was filthy and had plates that had been there a good while but don’t worry I asked for paper towels from behind the bar so I could clean it myself .

Popped in to this pub to catch the Manchester United vs Liverpool FA cup match on St Patrick’s day , bought a couple of drinks with my wife and the Chelsea match was just finishing, after 10 mins I asked the barman if he could change the channel to ITV to watch UTD which he duly did, 10 mins before kick off the bar manager came up the stairs and turned the tv off. I thought initially he was just sorting something out but as a couple of minutes past it was apparent he wasn’t and had just turned it off, I had caught his eye and he could tell I was watching the game and he stood up as if to walk back down the stairs so I stood up to ask if he could turn the match back on, I called out to him “excuse me” no response so I said it again louder, (this is only a small pub so he definitely heard and he just started to walk away. I then asked the other bar staff to turn the match back on and they said it was the managers decision , he never returned and the other staff seemed too scared to go against his wishes . May not seem a big thing but the fact he knew I wanted him to turn it on and purposely walked away was extremely frustrating , I left with my wife immediately to find somewhere else to enjoy the match . My suggestion in future would be to put your own wishes aside in favour of your patrons.

The dinning room is casual elegant, with a lighting that sets a calming mood, and a bit of fun history. The waiter is on the spot and very puntcual. What really takes the crown, though, is the pie. I had the slow cooked beef pie. It is a mouthgasm! The doug is crunchy. The red wine gravy is tasty. A side of carrots and mashed potatoes bring ina savory touch. And dont even bother bringing the teeth; The brisket litterally falls of the fork. It is just such, suuuch a good pie.

I visited “The Bear and Staff” for a pie and pint on 7th March 2024. I was not provided with a written bill and I was charged £32.01 which I paid by credit card. Customers should always be provided with a written bill clearly showing a breakdown of what they are being expected to pay. After leaving the pub, I realised that £32.01 was VERY EXPENSIVE for just a pie and pint. I did not have time to return to “The Bear and Staff” and I therefore e-mailed them the next morning. At least to their credit, I did receive a response to the first of my e-mails from “Phil” although he then totally ignored my follow-up e-mails to question the following. This is very poor customer service when I had legitimate comments and questions. Whilst the pie came with included carrots and mashed potato, I was told that there was a £4 “add on” for broccoli. Apart from being exceptionally expensive for just a few pieces of broccoli, I am wondering why some vegetables are included whilst others are deemed to be an “add on”. Furthermore, I did not specifically request broccoli and I was not advised that this as an “add on” would incur an additional cost of £4. This should be made clear to customers. I was also told that there was an “optional service charge” of 10%. Whilst I may have been happy to pay this, again I was not advised that there was a “service charge” and that I had an “option” to pay it. It was therefore not “optional” but effectively mandatory. This should also be made clear to customers. All this makes my £32.01 bill for a pie and pint extremely poor value for money and therefore I will not consider “The Bear and Staff” again should I need to eat in this area of London. No doubt “Phil” will claim here following this review that these hidden charges are transparently stated to customers. They are quite clearly not! Warning to potential future customers …. Always demand a written bill and check everything that you have been charged for!

For various unforseen reasons, I had to spend Christmas alone in Central London. I had done this before, but that was pre pandemic and I don't know what outlets would be open during this uncertain time. But from prior years I recall Leicester Square being open to cater for the oversees tourists.I walked around looking for somewhere to basically sit down and stumbled upon the Bear & Staff. The initial plan was to have a beer and that was it. It was a very cosy and warm atmosphere and I saw menus around and asked whether food was available. It was bookings only, but as I was out solo they managed to squeeze me upstairs. All in all, this saved my Christmas day. Real nice atmosphere, lost of families enjoying themselves, great service and good food. I'm not a fan of the Christmas Dinner so opted for the other items on set menu.. Fish n Chips. Splendid.

Went with my son and specifically booked this restaurant as it served Sunday roasts. It was empty when we arrived so we order immediately. Son ordered the vegan burger which he enjoyed. I ordered roast beef. It took 45 minutes for the food to come (they were not busy). The beef was actually very nice, as was the gravy. The veg was just cabbage and peas (and parsnips which I don't like). No promised carrots . The roast potatoes were like bullets, trying to cut into them was extremely difficult. They were not "home cooked", they were obviously frozen potatoes, not freshly prepared. The yorkshire pudding was exactly the same I think the roast is about £17 and is totally overpriced. The meal was also luke warm. The waitress was friendly.

Decided to eat here drawn in by the emphasis on the pie reputation, bar staff spoke to us and bigged up the pies stating that the steak and ale option was unique and the "STEAK AND NICHOLSON'S PALE ALE PIE Beef cooked in Nicholson's Pale Ale" was unique to the pub impressing us that this was all home made and in house prepared. The reality was quite different, the pies are actually shipped in frozen !! The gravy was from a packet and the veg again frozen produce, all this was confirmed by a staff member, many of whom were just sitting around the dining area taking breaks etc, not good presentation at all and in my book very unprofessional.£14.50 for a frozen pie !! come on.

We ate ate this pub/restaurant almost by default. We had intended getting a bus from The Strand back to Marble Arch, but due to a demonstration in Trafalgar Square area, the area from there and up The Strand was completely gridlocked. We therefore walked down Charing Cross Road and both of us being tired and footsore after a long day in the Capital, came across The Bear and Staff. We looked at the menu and decided we would give it a try. The restaurant area is upstairs away from the hubbub of the main pub area. The menu was pretty basic pub grub which suited us. We both had fish - my husband the Haddock and chips and I had the salmon dish. Both were piping hot and very tasty. There was no undue greasiness of my husband's plate when he had finished. My salmon dish was full of flavour. Afterwards we did not want one of the heavier "puddings" so we asked if we could just have a portion of ice cream each so that is what we had. The service was good and the ambience serene. There were a handful of other customers in a not that large area, well spaced out and everything was Covid secure. Very happy with our choice. Will visit this or another Nicholson pub/restaurant in the future - competitive prices too. We did not leave a tip as there was a 10% service charge levied, otherwise we would have done and that would probably have equated to the service charge in any case.

When in the area again we’d definitely return. Ocean fish and chips was as good as any I’ve had given it’s only fish and chips. We’ve all had soggy batter served up to us at one time or another, but none of that here. Crispy batter, freshly cooked haddock with scampi pieces. Sticky toffee was standard but nice. Never ever have I been spoken to like the man …. Not gentleman !! Spoke to me and my 2 friends 14/07/21Most bars/restaurants we visited had a sign saying wait to be seated. This bar didn’t. The server was sorting someone’s wobbly table so we sat down. We sat for a while while he took payment then cleaned another table. He then came over in a rude abrupt manor to tell us we shouldn’t have sat down he had to clean the table first which I totally understand. He had noticed all our movements so why leave it 5 mins for us to download the app and almost order before he decided to tell us off. All he needed to say was can you wait a minute ladies and I’ll be with you. Instead he went on to tell us he’s on his own and we should have waited. He let everyone sitting there hear him. It’s not the customers fault that he was busy and stressed. Eventually after listening to him rant on I told him I didn’t like his tone he was rude and we didn’t want a drink there after all. As we were walking away he decided to rant on at 2 gentlemen customers about us. They’d gone for a drink not to listen to a rude barman. Absolutely disgusting service by 1 individual. He needs to be sent on a course to learn manors and customer service.

Haven't been to London for months due to Lockdown/Covid-19 etc. Managed a trip yesterday with my eldest son for Christmas shopping. So many places and pubs closed at the moment but was delighted that The Bear & Staff was very much open. I've been coming here for a coupe of years, usually meeting friends or old colleagues for a Festive Flagon. I couldn't fault the service we received yesterday - obviously not the usual pub experience but very enjoyable. Table service throughout, staff were attentive, the Amstel on tap was cool & crisp, the food was delicious, the pub looked very festive - it's a shame it wasn't busier. But next year, it'll be back to normal I'm sure!

We were a party of 9 who came for a meal upstairs in the restaurant and the staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was lovely - pub grub! It is very small though and the tables are close together to maximise the space I would imagine so if you don’t like to be at close quarters with others this isn’t the place for you.

I went for lunch and it was fine - they'd run out of the desert I wanted by 1pm but the food was decent. We got the bill and the server came over with the card machine. The first question was whether I wanted to pay a gratuity. I said yes and paid just over 10%. I looked at the bill the following day to see that they'd ALREADY added the gratuity/service charge on the bill so they'd effectively got tipped twice. I did email them about this and was told "many .. from America where they are used to tipping 20% at the end of their meal". Hhhhhmmm. Many countries don't tip at all but they obviously ignore this. Yes I should have checked the bill but to be honest, I thought that as I was asked to tip, that it hadn't been included already. Obviously the bar tender didn't tell me either. And again they say most places charge 12.5% but that's normally a nicer place than a pub with toilets two levels down. Also the men's toilets were absolutely disgusting - only 1 out of the 3 urinals were working. I've been to this place a few times but there's better places to go to in the area - the company email laid the blame totally on me for not checking and yes, I should've checked but many of us don't and also - to ask for TWO tips/service charge for a pub meal??? Please!

Have been a few times before so was considering a different pub to try somewhere else but decided to stick with what I know so popped in on a Friday early evening. Although it was quieter than the last time I visited (well it is mid January now) they pitched the atmosphere just right and the staff behind the bar remembered me and asked me about how I've been. A really special touch, so pleased I chose my favourite pub to drink in again!

Had a great experience at The Bear and Staff. The food was quite good, but the it was the service that really stood out. Our waiter was quite friendly, and was able to make several excellent recommendations for both food and beverages. We were glad we went with his suggestion for the starter in particular. We'd definitely come back here again!

We popped in here on the way to the theatre. They have proper beer much to my husband's delight and I really enjoyed my glass of Rioja. Service was quick and the staff were lovely. I was after a cocktail so we only stayed for one.

Looking to book somewhere to eat between parts 1 and 2 of Harry Potter we came across The bear and staff just a few minutes walk away and we reserved a table. What a great place, not a very big dining room so would recommend booking. A really friendly welcome from the barman/waiter. A nice atmosphere. Good beer and some fantastic gins. Wonderful food we all had the fish and chips but looking around all the food looked good. Oh yes and the desserts wow (clotted cream cheesecake yummy).Very reasonable prices too. Will definitely return if we are in London again
