The Beach Hut in Islington

Went on a Friday night with my mates for a bit of dinner. Really great food with proper fair prices that you don’t see a lot these days. What really makes this place great though are the two owners, they just know how to have a laugh and make the whole place feel really welcoming. BYOB too, what more could you want.

Top quality Fish and Chips and great portions. Fresh fish fried on order with lovely chunky chips. Great service. Thoroughly enjoyed and recommended.

Lucky to have this as my local chippy. The tastiest, freshest fish and chips (they cook to order) and not overpriced like some other places can be! Be prepared to wait for up to 20 minutes on a Friday evening but it’s worth it.

Ladies and Gentlemen your search is over...this is the best Fish and Chips in London! Firstly, the food is cooked to perfection with the Fish prefectly fried and the chunky chips are the best I can remember having. Not only that, the restaurant is lovelingly maintained, in a charming spot and the owners are nice and friendly in a proper old school London way. And did I mention it is also a BYOB with all the glasses there if you fancy a tipple with your meal. Result! Honestly, forget some of the rare negative reviews on here, one is for the wrong plaice (see what I did there...) and the other is about an unperfect booking experience. I mean, even if it did happen, who books a fish and chip gaff where the the two owners are working hard behind the fryer and till dealing also with walk ins and expects the white cloth treatment. So there you go, the secrets out, this is the best chippy in town. PS - if the owners read this, your guacamole is lovely too ;-)

Checking best fish & chips on Google we discovered the beach hut . I called to make a reservation . A woman answered , saying yes when I said hello , no introduction as to who I was calling , after confirmation that I was indeed speaking to the beach hut .I enquired if I had to make a reservation . The woman laughed and said well if wanted to ?! A little non plussed I replied well yes if it’s necessary . She again replied if I wanted to ! By this time I had decided that with this type of greeting and service over the phone , that I would definitely not make a reservation . I told the woman this and she ended the call by saying , well if you don’t like it …. I hung up the phone . As a caterer myself I was shocked and saddened by this .it’s in the word …. Hospitality . There was none here .

Exactly what you want for your local fish and chip shop! Super delicious and you can sit outside on a nice day.

Been meaning to try this place for a while. Unfortunately we found it to be overpriced and disappointing.

Been a few years since our visit to London. By far the best fish and chips we had on our multiple visits to the UK. Still dream of them to this day.

I pop in at The Beach Hut at least once every two weeks, and look forward to it on a Friday evening. The staff are really nice, friendly and funny to start with... and I enjoy sitting around listening to the music, and chat while I wait for my take-away fish and chips. The fish is lovely and fresh, the chips nice and chunky. I have to take a bus there and back home, the food is still hot when I sit down and enjoy it... going on my bicycle is a bit quicker.

Excellent fish & chips and lovely hosts. BYOB so makes for a lovely, reasonably priced evening. We will definitely visit again!

I've had the fish tacos from here before which were amazing when I had them. But today I ordered 2 small haddocks with chips and I'm thoroughly disappointed. The food was soggy as hell, some of the chips were undercooked with parts of it tasting practically raw. But the worst thing for me is that they didn't bother to remove the scales from my fish properly!! I've got fish scales still stuck down my bloody throat!! I know Fridays can be busy for some businesses but they let that affect the quality of their food too much.

The chips here are amazing, the nicest chips I've had in a very long time...they look hand cut, cooked in fresh oil, delicious. I was a little disappointed by the vegan tofu'ish - it looked great and the batter was lovely, however the tofu inside was not seasoned...it felt and tasted rather like a block of bland tofu - I struggled to finish it. The seaweed on top was a nice touch but did not add much flavour. If more could be done to improve the texture (to make it flaky) and flavour (perhaps marinate it) of the tofu'ish this could be an amazing dish!

Magnificent views and nice place to sit by the beach to enjoy your food and drinks. i ordered 2 pieces of the donuts, they were really soft, definitely a texture of donuts i haven’t encountered before (not doughy, but more of a cake kind of style). However, i do find the donuts were too oily, with some pockets of the donut absorbing the oil (as pictured + oil-sugar clumps coating the donut) and this has left an aftertaste. 3 stars given for the friendliness of staffs, good texture of donuts, quick service and view. 😊 hope to come back again!

The chips here are sooooo delicious. Probably the best Ive had in London. I tried the chicken burger for the first time and it was better than expected, a really juicy and tasty fillet. I'll definitely order it again. The battered sausage is always tasty, crispy batter. No other chip shop has ever provided this quality. My favourite place for chips. I'm keen to try other things from the menu now that i know how good the chicken burger is.

Takeaway fish and chips. Not the cheapest but quite nice. Just can't understand why fish is wrapped in material that sticks to the batter! So probably better to eat in rather than takeaway .

Delicious!! Freshest fish ever. And a nice place to sit outside. We will definitively go again. We had cod fish and asked for smushy beans instead of chips for the same price and there was no problem. Smushy beans where the best I’ve ever eaten. Thank you for that!!!

First visit, sat inside and had the most delicious fish, chips (best ones we’ve had in Islington) with a side of salad and mushy peas. Very quick and friendly service, will definitely be going back.

Customer service is vile!!! Food is ok. But oh my god the couple who own it and run it are not pleasant at all. Never experienced such rude business owners in my life, all that I have told about this couple have said the same. Majority of the neighbour hood do not like this couple and there customer service!! The best fish & chips I've had in London and possibly one of the best I've had in general - and I grew up near the sea in the south west. Really couldn't fault the fish or battered sausage. Will be recommending to others!

Best haddock and chips I've had in ages.

Coming from a North Eastern Seaside town originally., I generally wait until i go back home for Fish and Chips as the I've tried Fish and Chips once or twice in London which havent' been that great. So when i moved to the area and heard there was a fish and chip shop around the corner. It didn't really impress me based on past experiences. Anyway - one day i couldn't be bothered to cook and thought I'd give it a go via uber eats. Boy was I wrong. This place is absolutely fantastic. It has great portions and really tasty fish and chips. Apart from my home town. This is the only place I'd go for fish and chips _I cant praise this place enough - a great find.

Ordering from the Beach Hut reminded me of the Fawlty Towers episode in which Basil Fawlty only has one ingredient - Duck - and the menu is restricted to three options - duck with orange, duck with cherries or duck 'surprise'. From the Beach Hut I ordered their promoted fish tacos which I suspect is their fish version of the duck surprise. I have feasted on many a taco in Southern California and while I was not expecting a similar quality I was genuinely bewildered by their twist on these Baja staples. Essentially the tacos consist of the same battered fish that comes out the deep fryer, chopped up, and laid on a bed of wet salad which in turn is prepared on three rather sorry looking tortillas. The dish is accompanied with tortilla “chips” (think Doritos but worse) and a “salsa” which I suspect is in fact burger relish. Aside from the fact that you might as well just be eating a portion of battered cod, the chopped salad (not entirely sure diced cucumber and red onion is traditional in tacos) soaks the tortillas leaving you with a rather soggy and unappetising mess. Unfortunately it is also truly disgusting. If you do decide to order from this establishment which to its credit has been a feature of the Highbury high street for many years I would stick to good old fashioned fish and chips instead of one of their new “fish surprise” menus.

Really not that great. May have been due to getting it delivered but I’m not sure I’ve had a worse fish and chips. Hopefully a one off. Thanks anyway.

Extremely rude woman working there who point-blank refused to turn the volume of the music down for a partially deaf customer. After repeated polite enquiring if she could please turn down the music as it was too loud for the customer, she refused with the words: no, I can't turn the music down as this is how we like it. This is so inconsiderate and rude! Never again will this establishment have this customer go there again. She did not care at all. Cannot be recommended. How interesting that the description of the visit the business owner gave does not portray the facts as they happened. A person with hearing difficulties does not necessarily have to wear a hearing aid. That is certainly not the case here. The partner was not "meekly" standing by but it was him who decided never to frequent this shop again due to the rudeness of the business owner. He was not embarrassed at all. I also wonder who the unfriendly bully is when copying in here a review from another travel site whose experience was not dissimilar to the one described above. We got it twice delivered and it's the best I've ever had in England so far. I had place and it was unbelievably fresh. Can't wait to be able to enjoy the outdoors again and go to the actual restaurant. 🙂

Do not order the tacos. Really sub par - overfried (frozen) prawns with thick batter and no prawn flavour, very roughly chopped veg with piles of iceberg lettuce and what tasted like bottled sauces. Worst tacos I’ve ever had. 2 items missing from the order. Calamari and chips - maybe for the best? Fish and chips ok but can get better from other places. Gravy watery. 1st time to try it and had heard good things but a real disappointment...

The gulten free tofu and chips are amazing, my favourite chippy by far.

Freshest fish ever! All food excellent and very generous portions. Love eating in and availing of BYO to compliment our dinner. Alan and Miranda very friendly. I love it for its chilled cafe vibe in the evening. Gorgeous quiet outdoors area. Lovely staff who are are a real part is the community.

Generous portions of freshly hand cut chips. A nice variety of vegan alternatives, and a lovely location to eat. What is not to love? Service can be slow, but that's mainly because they prepare orders fresh - rather than let the chips sit and dry out in a hot cupboard.

Great fish and chips, perfect timing for a pickup order

Ordered chips and 2 battered sausages. One of the sausages had no batter and cant believe they served it like that. The sausages tasted horrible. Worst sausage I have ever tasted. Straight in the bin. The chips were under cooked and not that great. Very disappointed. Must be a bad day as I can see loads of good reviews.my first and last time I go there.

Every visit, always outstanding! This place serves the best fish and chips in London. We normally order our food, agree a time and have a couple of pints in the Barn. Until this lockdown is over, we phone ahead and it is always ready on time. As an added bonus, the owners have a great sense of humour and always have a laugh when we get there. The thought of going anywhere is, nah!

This place is a gem. Cash only, but don’t let that put you off. There’s a couple of cash machines less than a minute away. Really lovely fish and chips. It’s so rare to find a chippy that understands how batter should be. Fish and chips were cooked to order. Batter, light and crispy as it should be. Fish was lovely and fresh. Chips. Love how chunky they were. You can tell how clean the oil was just from the colour of the chips. Really nice and crispy coating. Staff were friendly and lovely.

Food was great and reasonably priced. Staff very patient with our requests, largish group. I'll be back. Seems like they do a roaring takeaway trade. Means it's good!! BYO.

We love this place. I would not even think of going elsewhere. They do a BYO so you can get a bottle from the off license and they all happy to give you wine glasses. The fish is always fresh and when they sold out they shut shop. Nothing frozen and if you fancy a holiday to far flung countries you can always get travel advice while waiting for your order. Yes it’s not cheap but then you paying for quality and it’s not a greasy chippy. If you around stop and try them.

Excellent fish and chunky chips at a reasonable price. A place like this is best experienced eat-in as the chips don't get chance to sweat in the takeaway bag. Gets very busy at the weekend mind and they're not terribly efficient. Maybe you can put in your order and head over the road for a pint, I don't know.

Excellent Tofu vegiterian fish and chips

I rarely review restaurants but this place is worth a mention. Not only is it a traditionally chippy (a dying breed) but they also offers a great menu of seafood at low prices. We had some beautiful oysters, then fish and chips. The fish batter was light and crisp and the chips were proper 'chippy chips'. Perfect. Plus, for only a tenner (to eat in) we got 2 fishes each! Service was friendly and the atmosphere was pleasant. I feel lucky to have this place in the neighborhood.

Rude cold "headmistress" type woman. Seen her smile once in all the times I been there (too much botox maybe!??) He tries harder, but looks under pressure ! Tense atmosphere, NOT relaxed or WELCOMING people ..!!! Fish getting smaller, soggier & greasier. Threw last lot in bin !! Cash only ... more convenient for the 'books' I suppose. Decent prices.. good if ur hungry or drunk . Definitely going downhill from my first visit ! :-(

Very rude staff and this is the 3rd time this has happened . We went there 40 minutes after it’s 5pm opening and was asked to come back at 5:45 , we showed him the opening time and he went off at us. When asked if that’s how he speaks to customers his reply was that we should get use to it. Never again will I ever attempt to buy from this place again.

Really nice place to eat in Highbury. Had a very tasty plaice and chips in clean, airy and congenial surroundings. Service was prompt and with a smile. Children friendly. Would recommend. Menu has emphasis on fish dishes.

Fantastic little fish n chip shop in Highbury Barn, good selection of fish on offer everyday. All cooked perfectly with crispy batter, although the chips could do with being a little more crispier but maybe that’s a personal preference. It’s also a BYO, a rare thing in London these days.

I visited on a cold December evening, so not the time for sitting outside to enjoy the full Beach Hut experience. The fish and chips were good, and I look forward to returning one sunny summer evening, to enjoy the sound of the waves as they break on the Highbury shores. (Anyone asking what shores will get a reply along traditional lines.)

Love this place. Every time I go it's like being on holiday. The food is great and freshly cooked to order and you can bring your own booze. They supply glasses. I'm gradually introducing friends and they all love it too.

Brilliant. Owners are incredibly hospitable and generous, food was great and reasonably priced - when they didn't have the drink we wanted, recommended we go to the off license and bring it back! Great service and lovely al-fresco environment. Great for veggies and vegans too

TOFUISH - a vegan fish n' chips extravaganza, and lovely friendly owners. Set back far enough from the street that it's quite peaceful - feels like continental street culture. Great!

Wonderful food. I use to just go just to eat the chips as I have a gluten intolerance and their chips are so tasty. However in the meantime Highbury Beach also do Gluten Free battered fish which is absolutely delicious. Great friendly service lovely atmosphere. I always leave there smiling. 😊

The best chips, and the best fish in Islington. They do not over cook the fish, the chips are chunky and hand cut. They are friendly. If you eat in you can take your own bottle and it is child friendly. Quite expensive and small portions, reflective of their position in Higbury Barn.

Became a vegitarian a few years ago and do miss fish & chips but The Beach Hut in Highbury has a brilliant & honestly, very good alternative. The tofu fish & chips should win an award. I treat myself to a plat of 'fish' & chips every so often & am grateful they have taken the time & effort to make this fantastic classic favourite. Cheers! Thanks!!!

People will complain about anything. The owners are both friendly and dedicated to their business. The food is as fresh as you could realistically get it without catching it yourself! I really liked their food. Ignore the negatives, nothing in life is perfect! Can't please everyone but your doing a very god job as you are :) Highly recommenced. Good is just gorgeous :)

Yo estaba bebiendo algo en el pub de enfrente de este lugar cuando me decidí a probarlo.Parece muy bonito y acogedor desde fuera.Pedimos calamares para el arranque y luego el pescado y patatas fritas.Creo que este fue el peor pescado y patatas fritas jamás.El pescado abadejo estaba demasiado preparado, demasiado crujientes, demasiado grasos. Olía el aceite viejo.Las patatas fritas eran suaves, grasienta, no preparado adecuadamente. Parecía que estaban duros antes y luego fritos.¡No se podía comer.¡Nunca más!

Solía ​​venir a comer pescado frito ya que cuando abrieron una calle, se fue por un tiempo y volvió vegetariano. No es que extrañe comer animales muertos o vida acuática, pero sus chips de tofu'n son BRILLANTES. ¡Es su propia invención y thry debería ganar un premio por esto! !

Siempre me siento como si estuviera en el sur de Gales cuando voy aquí, es un lugar encantador dirigido por una pareja divertidaPuedes tomar porciones de diferentes tamaños, comer, llevar e incluso puedes comprar tu cerveza fría del pub y traerla, así que te permite traer tu pripia bedida alcohólica, que es genial si eres exigente con tus vinos.

Se mudó a la zona hace unos años y funda esta pequeña joya y nunca miró hacia atrás. Los propietarios son muy amables y se enorgullecen de la calidad y la presentación de la comida, y son claramente muy populares entre los lugareños y parecen estar en el primer nombre con casi todos los que entran.

Freshly cooked fish, great chips, friendly service. Take away or byo and eat in, the atmosphere and artwork give it a great feel, or sit outside if the weather's good. All thats missing are the seagulls.

Pleasant reaxed atmosphere. Polite and pleasant owners. Freshly prepared food worth the wait. Unlike other Fish and chip restaurants that pre-cook in bulk. As well as a much more varied and versatile menu. Must go if you like a traditional Friday night fish and chips meal.
