We went here for an evening meal, the food was lovely and a lot of thought went into it. Unfortunately the service and the ambiance was not up to par. For a Saturday night there were only a few other people there which made us think that we had probably chosen the wrong place to go. Why are people not going here? I was surprised to be sat near the office area and the bar when we could be making use of the restaurant. The girls could then have their conversations without the customers in ear shot. It made the experience feel more casual. Considering it was the weekend before Valentine’s Day, we only saw a few other couples here, this should be the busiest night of the week. It took 20 mins for the waitress to come over and offer a drink, we were going to give it 5 more minutes before we walked out. At least the waitress apologised when she came over in the end, but you just don’t do that. The food was very nice but the service needs a lot of work. Dim the lighting, add some candles and be more attentive, use a tray too. The standard of food and the service do not align, you would be better off offering more casual food if you are not going to up the standards of service. Just a thought. I also don’t understand why the staff are wearing masks on their chins. Why not just take it off??

Really disappointed with my experience here firstly ordered a bottle of wine which was warm was offered by staff to put back into fridge to chill. Ordered the prawn and crab claw starter came with no crab claws when mentioned to staff they put 4 hardly defrosted crab claws on a plate. Ordered the rib eye steak with king prawns it was cooked in so much garlic I couldn't eat it and was swimming in a garlic liquid also had no mention of garlic on the menu. The staff were friendly and addressed the issue and was not charged for my main meal but still charged for the king prawns with my steak although the meal was sent back. Its a nice atmosphere but the food needs to be improved to charge premium prices.

A lovely modern interior, nice and airy and we were easily accommodated for lunch during August - and they were dog friendly! We were just after a light lunch. There were a few gluten free options - including gluten free bread. I went for a gluten free ham and cheese panini (I was told this would be gluten free bread and would be toasted on a separate toaster). It was meant to come with with celeriac coleslaw, spiralised salad and tamari sunflower seeds. I queried as to whether this would be gluten free and was told the chef would know which is fair enough. The sandwich came and it tasted fine. However it was a disappointing experience as it was the usual very tiny gluten free bread - and there was no accompaniment (not even a bit of plain salad). I'm assuming what it was meant to come with wasn't gluten free. For £6.45 for what was equivalent to half a panini and resulted in leaving hungry it wasn't good value. The service was friendly but extremely slow (although it is a large hotel with lots of nooks and crannies so could have been busier than it seemed).

Had booked a table prior to visiting Minehead as liked the thought of young people being trained up for future careers. We arrived at 8.00 for our table at 8.15 and were met by welcoming staff. Should have realised what was coming when waitress was moaning about how hard she had been working and couldn’t wait to finish at 9.00. We ordered a bottle of house red wine only to be told they had no full bottles left. We ordered an alternative which wasn’t an issue. We ordered our starters and main and was recommended to have the hanger steak. So starters came promptly, very good. Our mains then came too quickly without any break. By the time we had finished our main meal it was around 8.45 when the waitress came to clear the table and asked if have we wanted dessert and or the bill. I suggested she was in a rush to get home. We declined dessert but with still half a bottle of wine to drink the staff started to clear the table of everything inc the bottle and glasses of water. I have never been so rudely dealt with by any restaurant who so obviously couldn’t give a dam about the £60+ we had just spent to help their training etc. Very disappointing with no apology from any staff.

We enjoyed our meal so much we went back again a few days later. The menu is not extensive but there was a good variety and the food is cooked fresh (you can see in to the kitchen area to see it being prepared if you want to). Service was excellent. Not the cheapest but not over-expensive either. Very good value for money.

We were staying at the hotel so thought that we would give it a go even though the menu was a bit limited. They were able to offer my coeliac wife most things on the menu with alterations so she was quite happy. She had the chicken dish but commented that the skin was soggy. Overall she was happy. I had the cod dish but it was served with skin on and it was soggy. If they can’t get the skin crispy they should remove it. If I made this for myself at home I would have been disappointed. It also came with mashed potatoes but they were heavy and stodgy. The lobster sauce had a bit of taste and I always like a bit of salty samphire. Overall I was unimpressed. The restaurant itself had a nice feel to it and the staff attentive and helpful. We were more impressed by the hotel itself. Despite its Victorian heritage the restaurant is bright, airy and modern. With a rating of 18 out of 61 restaurants in Minehead we wouldn’t normally have entered the door but for the fact we were staying here. How good the higher ranked ones are we will have to wait and see. I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat here.

We were staying in Minehead for one night recently, and used trip advisor to find a good place to have an evening meal. The food was excellent, with great attention to detail. We eat out a lot and were very surprised at the quality of the food - everything was cooked to perfection and well presented. It's always reassuring to eat somewhere with a limited seasonal menu, as you know it's not coming out of a freezer. The kitchen staff should be commended! The quality was something we'd expect from a high end restaurant, and a very pleasant surprise find for a small local hotel in Minehead of all places! The front of house staff were polite and efficient without being overbearing. If you're near Minehead, you really should make a visit!

Although I cannot fault the staff what so ever for being so helpful and looking after us, overall I was quite disappointed considering the amount of money we spent in here. The bread/oils and starters were lovely. The risotto was lovely, very tasty. It did look like a caterpillar had got in with the veg and had been eating it so we left some. I don’t understand why this veg was served. I did point it out to the waiter and he said ‘no worries’? The kids meals came out without potatoes and so I had to chase that up. I paid for the meal and then realised that they had overcharged us.. they asked for a Pre order and sent us a menu. When they gave us the bill, they had added an extra £0.80 to £1 on all our mains and desserts. It’s a good job I checked but i had to spend a lot of time checking the receipt against the menu and working it out. Then although the deserts were lovely, my thin apple tart should have said teeny weeny in the description. Not sure of the profit margin on that dessert but it must be a very high one. The kids meals were a decent price and size and their banana splits were bigger then the adult desserts but didn’t contain the fresh cream that it stated on the menu. Nice food but if your going to charge those kind of prices you need to get every detail correct. I do have to say that the staff were incredible for sorting out a last minute guest with a meal, providing the kids with balloons. If i was just rating the staff it would be a 5/5. It’s just a-shame as I have eaten here a few times and have always been impressed before.

This place has a great story as well as fantastic food: it was bought by the YMCA to offer apprenticeships to young people under the expertise ofor head chef Paul. The result is a fine dining experience at very reasonable prices. The restaurant is airy and clean and the food beautifully presented. The maitre d'and serving staff are polite and discreet. We had three courses and finished with petit fours, which were chocolates handmade on the premises! Lately, I have had so many disappointing restaurant experiences, as good customer service seems a forgotten art. This place delighted me every way and made the b whole thing appear effortless. If you're in the area, make sure you visit, for a great experience while also investing in the future.

Visited Minehead with my husband and mother, looking for somewhere to eat that wasn’t kebab and chips. Thought the hotel looked contemporary and well kept, and stopped to have a look at the menu. Well it turned out to be the best lunch we have had for some time. The food was delicious, of high quality and well cooked. The presentation was impressive, and on the whole was excellent value. My husband was raving about his Exmoor steak all the way home, and we will definitely be back. The service was on the whole good, and discovering that it is helping young people into work was a bonus.

Friendly if somewhat chaotic service. Two Spritzers ordered and presented with two full glasses of wine and a bottle of soda. Guess they expected us to mix it ourselves but glasses too small and no ice. Food ordered and after 45 minutes noticed orders placed after ours going to tables. Chefs then resting so asked after our food. Waitress ran to till and took tabs to chefs. Chaos ensued to get food out ASAP. Waitress then came over and told us there was an issue with a burner on the cooker!!!! And it would be just a few more minutes. Eventually came after waiting an hour. Have to say the food was extremely fresh and delicious. The drinks were missed off the bill and after pointing this out at the front desk there was not one word of thanks or even a smile for our honesty. Good food - but some intensive staff training required.

Thought we would give this a try as the evening menu looked different to others we had seen in Minehead and produce is locally sourced. We were certainly not disappointed and delighted to have chosen The Galley. I love my food so it was difficult to choose which dish to opt for. Sea bass or cod or even the slow cooked smoked belly of pork with cockles, mussels and clams. Two of us went for the pork and two for the roasted rump of Exmoor beef. We were given home made bread rolls with poppy and sunflower seeds and rosemary butter. We also had some amazing "cheese puffs" and chilli sauce with the Chef's compliments. What a wonderful touch! The meal way exceeded our expectations and was, in my opinion, exceptional for the cost. Wonderful flavours, presentation and friendly service. Did I mention the samphire? Delicious. Restaurant was not busy which is a real shame as they deserve 5 stars for quality and thoughtful presentation. We did visit on a Tuesday evening so I hope that it will get busier once word is out about this fantastic "foodie heaven" They may need to increase waiting staff if it all takes off. Please give it a try and you won't be disappointed. We'll definitely be back. Thank you for a fabulous meal.

Decided to wander into town centre/esplanade, assuming that in a British seaside resort there would be a choice of fish'n'chips establishments. Admittedly 6.30 pm on a weekday before school holidays, but we were surprised to find so little open at all. About to return to our (admittedly excellent) hotel and eat in the (admittedly equally exdellent) restaurant, we paused to look at The Beach menu. Looked interesting, no sign of a giant TV showing sport (sorry, pet hate) so we went in. Lovely welcome, and for most of the meal we were the only diners - as other reviewers have commented, having all the staff and the kitchen brigade to yourselves is novel! And then - the food was simply superb. Cured salmon and lemon sorbet was a revelation; sea bass excllent, with beautifully cooked veg, and medallions of pork ditto. The 'terrine' of three fruits was very clever, perfectly executed. Cheese board, with local cheeses and the best homemade biscuits I've ever had, rounded it all off perfectly. Great presentation throughout, and great service. I hope this restaurant is rammed every day in high season, it deserves it.

We stayed in the hotel for 3 evenings and decided to try the food in the restaurant having had a great breakfast on Saturday morning. The meal was easily some of the best food we have sampled this year, and the most shocking point was that we had the entire restaurant to ourselves for the whole evening, so we had 3 chefs and one person waiting on us for the meal. The open plan of the preparation area and kitchen means that you can see what is being prepared and this is a great touch.

We had Sunday lunch at the Beach Hotel Restaurant today. There are a plenty of other places in Minehead for a cheap/ cheerful Sunday lunch or carvery - some are excellent value - but if you are looking for lovely food, perfectly cooked and presented, along with very pleasant service then this is as good as anywhere in the area (including Exmoor, Dunster and Porlock). The only mystery is why the restaurant wasn't full! The price at £9.95 for the main course and £5.95 for dessert is not the cheapest around but is excellent considering the care which obviously goes into the cooking. We had a lovely meal and as we live in Minehead and will definitely be using the Beach hotel again soon.

We go out for Sunday lunch 2-3 times a month. Some are good but a lot are mediocre or just plain bad. So I wasn’t expecting anything different when I booked in for Sunday lunch at the Beach Hotel in the Gallery restaurant. The Yorkshire puddings were light and crisp, roast potatoes were heavenly, vegetable were vibrant with colour and perfectly al dente. Then we get to the beef. Top cut of rump, perfectly roasted to medium rare, succulent and soft. Everything was just perfectly cooked and presented. My wife and I could not fault our meal. All we saw in the brightly lit theatre kitchen were youngsters, who I figured were the apprentices and if this is their standard of cooking, I’m definitely coming back of an evening to see what they can really do. An amazing Sunday lunch and we will be back next month.

We went in unannounced and it was so quiet we weren't even sure the restaurant was open, but fortunately it was. The menu was clearly marked with all the possible allergens people might have, gluten, crustacean etc which was great, but at first I panicked that my options were limited as most contained gluten which I can't have. However they do adapt where practical. Apart from us there was just two other tables occupied which was surprising as food excellent. However the waiter was a bit strange, nice and polite but rarely around! We didn't get asked if we'd like a drink, one of our mains got forgotten by him, not the chefs fault but the chef who may be the owner, immediately put it right and took it off the bill even that we didn't ask him too. The plates weren't cleared away and he didn't ask if we wanted desert and had to go and find someone to pay the bill. As well because it's also a hotel you get guests coming past as you eat. But if we were local wed go back as food was excellent and good value, just a bit bizarre what was going on with the waiter.

Yes the menu is rather short but then on the night there was only one other party in the restaurant. I know that I prefer this to the menus and food produced by the usual chain hotels. I hope to return when next in the area.

Had a family get together evening meal which we all enjoyed. However there was a very limited menu and the main course vegetarian option was unusual and not particularly tasty. Despite that the food was well cooked and presented beautifully, and the service was excellent.

My colleague and I had business in Minehead and chose the Beach Hotel as a stop over for the evening. After having searched on the website the hotel looked quite inviting, but think a lot was based on staying in the Summer which I suppose would be a nice location. The hotel staff were very helpful but overall there was not a lot of atmosphere as it was very quiet which we are not used too. The rooms were average for the price we paid and the decor was to a satisfactory standard. The receptionist (Vanessa) was very chatty and made us feel welcome, but we decided that it would not be a good place to eat as it was too quiet. I suppose this location would change when the season for the year starts and they do try to make your stay as comfortable as possible in a quiet period. It would be an ideal location for retired couples maybe but not for business people. Thank you anyway to the staff for all of your assistance.

Paul the Head Chef & Amelia the Sous Chef provided the best food we've experienced for some time. Breakfast choice was excellent and the Valentine Menu was superb.Quality, presentation and portion sizes were amazing value. I can't understand why the restaurant isn't packed full every night.

It's important to remember that the Beach is a training establishment - so you expect a few issues. That said, we had a very nice meal - the food was pretty good - well prepared and executed. Perhaps not as finessed as you would see in a normal resturant. The more disappointing part of the experience was front of house - not much of a wine list and pretty tacky decor and furnishings. The staff felt a bit 'nervous' of the punters too.I'm not sure overall whether the pricing is quite right given the front of house part of the equation: I'd be happy with the price of the food in the right setting.

Four of us visited The beach after hearing good reviews Nice welcome with pleasant staff Starter was good but one was forgotten so one guest dined aloneTwo of us had partridge served on foie gras with black pudding The foie gras was not cooked the partridge had been seared but not cooked as was the rest of the meal rare game is one thing but running blood on the plate is anotherWe accept that this is a training restraunt but the head chef should have done temperature checks before letting this food leave the kitchenThe other two meals were very good

Our local club coach outing this year took us to Minehead, travelling on the West Somerset Railway from Bishops Lydeard. We made an advance booking at The Beach Hotel for lunch for our party of nine. The hotel is just across the road from the railway station. Although the restaurant was not open they opened up for us and we had a nice two course lunch based on their normal cafe menu. The restaurant was nice and clean and tidy with a modern upgrade. The staff were very helpful and the food was lovely. We understand that there is some excellent accommodation there and people were checking in as we left. We walked around the town which seemed quite interesting.

This really is a hidden gem in Minehead. We chose this restaurant based on the Tripadvisor reviews but did not expect such a treat. The food was really lovely with a lot of potential to become spectacular with practice and experience. The staff were wonderful and we had a great evening. I did not expect to find such a place in Minehead and I do hope it will continue to flourish.

Quite exceptional food quality and presentation akin to that found on Masterchef. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating and it was nice to have the whole team introduced to us at the conclusion of the meal. Such a shame there was only one other group of diners on a Saturday evening - I hope trade picks up as The Beach gets better known.

Very good food and service. Great idea to have young trainees under the guidance of professionals. Inventive and interesting menu. Definitely not a typical seaside chippie!

Fantastic concept - this restaurant gives youngsters the chance to learn to cook & present "fine dining" meals. We took our four children, aged 6-13 and the childrens' food was as stunning as the adults'. Price was extremely reasonable for such quality. We also got to meet our chefs after the meal. It was as much a fantastic experience for our kids as it was for the new chefs. Highly recommend this place, please support this excellent project.

When we visited Minehead for the day last year, The Beach Hotel was derelict, boarded up. In the ensuing year it has been utterly transformed into a beautiful place to enjoy fine dining. Apparently The Beach was purchased by YMCA Somerset Coast Group who saw the old hotel as an opportunity to restore the heart of a community. And now young apprentice chefs and other staff are learning their craft and earning their qualifications with guidance from professionals. But don't think for a minute that you'll be dining guinea pigs – we had the most spectacular meal there, a true food experience. At times it felt like we were starring in a Master Chef final, it really was that good. And great value, too. There's a pretty cafe too. DO NOT MISS this dining delight.

Stayed at the Beach hotel Saturday 8th August. A party of four, forty something men. Thought the menu looked too fancy for us. We decided to book a table anyway. We all picked the Cannon of Beef as our main. Absolutely fantastic, melted in the mouth, very filling. Finished off with Cheese and biscuits. Prior to the meal we were given complimentary canapés, a very nice touch. Excellent service, nothing too much trouble, will be back again!

I believe this innovative Minehead Hotel/Restaurant will open officially on 19 July 2015 but were lucky enough to have dinner in the spacious calm of the restaurant on Sat 11 July. The place has been set up as (I think the first) hospitality training facility for young people, under the auspices of the YMCA. The enthusiastic staff are learning new skills from hospitality and catering professionals and thriving from the experience. On arrival, we were seated in the lobby and given menus from which orders were taken. Over a drink, we were given complimentary canapes. Once seated in the restaurant, we were treated to a small "amuse bouche" and rolls with olive oil/balsamic vinegar, while we waited for our meal. I had duck breast and my daughter chose the canon of beef, both of which were nicely cooked and well presented. For dessert, we both chose creme brulee. The mains arrived cooler than I would have liked, the creme brulee was not long out of the fridge and should have been served at room temperature. We mentioned this to staff as constructive criticism to help with the training. Overall, the food was very good and we told the young chefs and their supervisor so, when they asked for feedback at the end of the meal. I would guess that getting hot food to the pass was a problem that evening but I'm sure it will be overcome soon and it is important to remember that this is a training establishment. The bill for the meal and a very nice bottle of Sauvignon Blanc came to a very reasonable £66 for two. Some patrons think the prices are too high but the quality of the food and service are comparable to good restaurants elsewhere. There is plenty of cheap and cheerful seaside resort themed food available at other restaurants/cafes in Minehead but if you want something completely different, in a more relaxing atmosphere, then head to The Beach Hotel, Minehead - you won't be disappointed and will be supporting a worthy training facility helping young people find new careers.

We were lucky enough to spend the weekend here, I chose a luxury double, this turned out to be an incredibly spacious double aspect room on the second floor, the view was amazing I could lay in bed and watch the waves breaking on the shore and with the windows open could hear it too. The staff here really take this hotel to another level, Felix absolutely is a credit to this hotel, his hard work, politeness , and pride in his work was plain to see. Another member of staff who was noteworthy was John, again an incredibly hard working and polite chap. Both could teach many other hotel staff and owners a lesson in customer service. Ok on to the restaurant..the food was past excellent. I have eaten in many restaurants and embassys around the world and the food these young chefs produced was easily ranked amongst the very best. After the meal the head chef brought the young apprentices out for feedback. Whilst speaking to them I found out the one who had cooked my duck has now secured a place with a Michelin star restaurant. I feel privaliged to have had him cook for me on his way to chef stardom.

This restaurant is run by a man with real talent. It is staffed by young, but enthusiastic apprentices who do a wonderful job since they are well supervised. Thus, you get real top-notch cuisine, beautifully presented, accurately cooked, for a fraction of the price you might pay (and I confess I have done) at other restaurants. My starter of pigeon breast consisted of two small, but perfectly cooked slices of pigeon, at either end of a white oblong plate, garnished with just a few pea shoots. In between was the finest slice of haggis surrounded by a smear of kohlrabi juice (I didn't know how this was going to work, kohlrabi being, to my mind a very underused vegetable in this country - but it did work well). To the left were a few drops of pea-shoot puree and some cream of goats cheese. The whole being set off by three delightful sweet requito drop peppers. Gorgeous !!! £5.95 - can you believe it ???????Next came a Parsnip steak !! Now I'm a confirmed carnivore so for me to be tempted to do teh veggie thing is quite scary - - but it was wonderful - - I won't explain what he does - - go and try it !!! The red cabbage ketchup, and the way the 'steak' was cooked make this the closest that any vegetarian will ever get to having the proper steak experience - - - just magical !!What are you waiting for ? Get out there NOW and DO IT !!!!!!

Whilst on holiday in Minehead we were looking for somewhere a bit different from the menus offered at many establishments. After reading many menus we came upon The Beach which had a menu which immediately caught our eye: innovative dishes at reasonable prices. Food is cooked by young trainee chefs under expert supervision and is well cooked and beautifully presented. This is a YMCA charity project and deserves to succeed, but don't support it for that reason, just go for a great dining experience!

My organisation had a very good experience at The Beach for a St.George's Day Dinner. The decor is modern and tasteful. The dining room accommodated our party of 49 very comfortably. The food was very good. Our pre-arranged menu tended towards 'nouvelle cuisine' rather than traditional bar snacks, [chips do not feature!] and was served efficiently by an impressive staff, some of whom are still learning their trade at a local college. This hotel, previously rather run down, has been updated by its new owners, the YMCA, who use it as a training hotel for young adults who wish to go in to the catering and hotel management, and they are overseen by experienced dedicated staff.

I reviewed the White Horse on the 18 April 24 when it re-opened after a period of failure. It was wonderful then just to have the pub open for drinks but now Lisa and Tim have a limited menu serving meals from Thursdays to Saturdays evenings and Sunday lunches. Some friends dropped into stay the other night and treated us to a Sunday lunch at the pub, the first since re-opening, which was not just good but exceptional. The beef was first rate with five vegetables beautifully cooked. The place was booked out and all by locals enjoying great hospitality filling the room with animated conversation. We shall be going again as soon as we can! On Mondays our 1759 Guinness Club is now able to regain our home in Stogumber’s White Horse. Last night we met to enjoy Irelands greatest stout and gained a fair few members. Word is spreading!
