My wife and I with two friends were looking for a lunch while visiting Brechin. A local woman saw us look at the Bakehouse and told us we would not be disappointed if wanting lunch. Obviously we had not booked but when we went into the cafe the young waitress said it was ‘ no problem ‘ and showed us to a corner table. Our order was quickly taken and our lunch arrived 10 minutes later. Excellent food and very reasonable prices. When in Brechin this cafe is well worth a visit.

What a find! We were recommended to go here by the owner of the B&B where we stayed as she reckoned we'd like it. She was not wrong. The menu choice was excellent, the food superb, the service outstanding and the price (at £26.95 for 3 courses incl coffee) amazing (and its BYOB with no corkage charge!). We are only disappointrd that our stay in Brechin was so short we couldn't go again.

I had a starter of prawn and avocado which was delicious and well worthy of an upmarket restaurant. Hefty portion of gammon steak with pineapple served with a separate bowl of delicious crispy fat chips and a dish with carrots and broccoli with their own little serving spoon and fork. My wife had a baked potato with chicken, bacon and avocado with a delicious looking well prepared side salad. We had 2 large pots of tea between us all for slightly less than £24. Stopped off for a quick bite to eat on a bike tour with a friend and very quickly wished I hadn't. Walk in to be confronted by large menus advertising meal deals and display cases of goods, try to order (not much of the advertised products actually in stock at 2pm on a Monday?) and eventually divine what was actually on offer through a process of elimination as the woman behind the counter gets on with the cleaning then runs off into the kitchen before you can ask about getting a drink or the rest of the things on the advertised meal deal. Unperturbed by the advised ten minute wait I help myself to the soon to be infamous crisps from the basket, take a seat, open them then have her remerge a minute later and jump down my throat because they're take away only and it's 'company policy I'm afraid' that they can't be eaten in the cafe. I'm then told that I have to pay for them anyway and I'd either to go outside and eat them or put them in my pocket. The person in question's manner was abrupt and unfriendly to the point that the only other customers in the place actually grimaced when she was talking to me, and then told us that what we'd ordered would cost 'more' (actually double) to have sit-in, leaving us counting our change to make sure we'd enough. If you have to wait ten minutes for a toasted sandwich can you really give people a hard time for taking a seat while they wait anyway? It's not hard to ask people if they're eating in or taking away when they walk in or advertise sit-in and take away prices but anyway, company policy is to treat your customers like they're supposed to instinctively divine whatever contrary rules you pluck our your hat then sit there like a scolded child with their food in their pocket because you can't achieve this momentously complex transaction otherwise. Obviously, hell would have frozen over and the ceiling caved in if I'd eaten the crisps in full sight of the two ladies also unlucky enough to give custom to this place so I bemusedly crammed them in my pocket then took pleasure in feeding their ground up bits to the pigeons later. Not great really, is it? After a solemn 15 minute wait where you're wondering what the hell you're doing in such a bleak and joyless landscape of leaky pies and puckered faces, but the food was eventually served by another younger lady who to be fair was actually quite pleasant and capable. Unfortunately the coffee tasted like cheap crap and the panini was a tepid mess that I presume at £6 was supposed to justify its price with a salad garnish and the few crisps gracing the plate. Regardless, with such a welcome you could serve a Michelin starred tasting menu and you'd still leave thinking the place was black hole of charm and culinary skill, and frankly this banal little Brechin bakehouse is more likely to be on Kitchen Nightmares than Masterchef. Brechin will forever be associated with the shrill cry of 'it's company policy I'm afraid' and that's an indictment on any town let alone a business that just has to accomplish the momentously complex feat of serving a sandwich without the customer hating the place by the time they leave.

Arrived in Brechin to go to another eating venue to find it closed ,so were scouting about looking for other options when we realised this place was open of an evening so in we went.It was a Saturday evening so we lucky to get a table without previous booking, but the staff were very friendly and accommodating and found us a place despite being busy. For starters I ordered the home-made chicken pate which came served in a ramekin with oatcakes and a generous serving of dressed salad, and it was , hand-on-heart, the most delicious pate I've had in a long time. Partner opted for the mussels, and to be honest got such a large bowl of them that my help had to be enlisted.(No probs as I'm greedy) These too were fresh and very more-ish.On to the mains and I opted for the rustic salmon which was served on a bed of a piquant tomatoey tagliatelle, partner had the duck breast and both were served with separate servings of seasonal veg and piped fondant tatties.....verdict......both extremely yummy! The very pleasant staff were attentive and went out of their way to ensure everyone present was enjoying their meal.It was also pointed out to us that they are unlicensed, but have no problems with customers bringing along their own drink, which I think is pretty decent of them.Sadly, as we were stuffed-to-the-gunnels, we couldn't manage a dessert, but definitely plan a return visit to this fab find and hope to leave space next time.

We've visited lots for lunch but had yet to try the evening menu and as my parents were visiting I thought we'd try it rather than the hotel. The tables were all busy so that is a good sign.We had two starters - deep fried Brie and a mussels and chorizo. Both very good. Food was hot as were plates. They even brought a finger bowl for after eating the mussels.Main courses were steak pie, duck, pork schnitzel and pork fillet. They were all cooked really well. They asked how I wanted the duck which was good. They were accompanied by piped mashed potato and vegetables. Dad said the steak pie was one of the best he had ever had, but as a treat he would have liked chips. There was no option of chips at all, which doesn't necessarily bother me, but sometimes when you are having a pie or steak it's nice to be able to have the option. Two desserts were had - sticky toffee pudding and chocolate cappuccino mousse. Both again were enjoyed and the STP was again acclaimed to be one of the best in a long time. The bill for the whole evening was £65. I thought that was reasonable and because you can take your own alcohol (they don't charge corkage) that probably knocked £30 off what we would have spent at the hotel. We will definitely go back again. They do a Mexican night on a Friday and I see are opening again once a month for Sunday lunch. Good to see the place doing so well.

Yet again this restaurant has bent over backwards to make our magical. The chef was able to adjust many of meals to gluten free for my sister and he also made a separate menu for my daughter who is gluten and dairy free. Everyone left with a full stomach and a smile on their face. Many thanks.

This restaurant pulled out all the stops for a special celebration in line with their usual high standards of food and service. Good cooking, well presented. Delightful staff.

After sampling the delights of other brechin eating places thought i would give here ago to be honest wish i hadnt bothered menu was basically a carbon copy of northern hotel where we dined a few weeks before all this place had done was change a few things but in all the same and a much cheaper price which shows in the quality doesnt matter how nice you make the food look on a plate if the quality isnt there it just taste cheap place had friendly feel tho so that was one nice thing probably to distract the fact that chef has just went round getting ideas from other places instead of using own.would i eat here again??? Probably after all if money is tight and you need an average meal that could be done at home then yeah i suppose atleast someone else does the dishes

I recently visited The Auld Bakehouse as the guest of friends who were celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary. The owners had opened specially for the occasion and had gone to a great deal of trouble to organise the event which went really well thanks to the excellent food and friendly service. The sticky toffee pudding was amazing!!

We have eaten lunch & breakfast at the Auld Bakehouse a number of times since the new chef took over and we've never been disappointed. We decided to try out an evening meal at the restaurant and booked for their first Thursday opening. As it was the first night, it was quiet, but the atmosphere was still great. We were put at ease by a very friendly waitress who intuitively knew when to give us space and when to chat and to ask if we needed anything. The food was absolutely delicious - cooked to perfection and an ideal portion size. We had a little room for dessert and they didn't disappoint either - the best Sticky Toffee Pudding ever, according to my husband! We highly recommend a visit here - you won't be disappointed.

Private party of 40 people. Had an excellent lunch. Varied choice. Very good service. My beautifully cooked duck breast was served with a delicious sauce. The sticky toffee pudding was delicately flavoured with ginger & was so light.

Best breakfast I have had anywhere in a long time! The black pudding didn't come cremated on the plate, the tomatoes were cooked to perfection, the poached eggs were just right and their yolks we're golden! All in all FAB. The service was friendly, polite and efficient.

The view from the dining room was lovely and the staff were super friendly and welcoming, unfortunately, the food was not great. The lasagne tasted like a poor-quality frozen ready meal and the mac 'n' cheese was not very nice. The chips were good, though. Unfortunately, for several days afterwards I had an upset stomach. Apparently, due to staff shortages, their menu was reduced and maybe they didn't have the qualified staff who usually prepare the food. Maybe we were just unfortunate and did not sample their food at its best.

Friendly staff, good service. Nice to sit outside and look out over the harbor. They do not serve food anymore, but they do have an ice cream bar daytime. Fair prices on the beer.

Good fresh food, although the menu isn't very varied if your looking for lunch It's in a lovely setting and there's a small play park for children. Dogs are allowed and well catered for. There's plenty parking but this is where I felt badly let down. There is no allocated disabled parking! There was a challenging walk on my crutches from the carpark to the cafe as the surface isn't very wheelchair friendly. With the space available in sure there is an easy remedy and I'm sure we'll come back for more of the good food and see if they resolve the parking for the disabled.

I've visited this cafe many times as we stayed outside Alyth numerous times throughout the year and more so when my sisters cancer was terminal. The reason I'm back today is to visit where their ashes were scattered as both my mom and sister are scattered here together. (We live in Wales) I would agree with many other reviews on here that this is not the friendliest cafe considering how lovely it is. I will point out that most times when the younger girls serve, they're very pleasant. I was here on Monday for tea and cake and the young blonde lady serving was absolute lovely and gave me the WiFi password, as I've also had on previous trips when I've asked. Nothing worse sitting on your own, Billy no mates and can't use your phone. Today I'm stretching and getting signal on and off. Anyhow, I came In today, Wednesday 16 October, no hello.. nothing. Sat down and rude woman appeared with pen and notepad..no hello.. just are you ready to order or do you need another minute? No smile, no pleasantries. I ordered I then went up to look for the password only for her to tell me there isn't one.. you can't have WiFi as we don't have it. I said it's showing up .. and I got it on Monday. No you didn't as we don't give it out... if everyone uses it our tills don't work.. Really ??? 🤔🤔😶🌫️ I said once again I got it on Monday. - no you didn't !! OK.. seemingly I'm a liar now 🙄🙄😔 Honestly I doubt I'll be back here as clearly the same woman, older, glasses and not a scottish accent I don't believe, Blue in her hair this time. You'd think after many complaints they'd do something about this.. unless she's the actual owner.. which sadly I hope not.. She does not make visiting conditions pleasant .
