The Ashvale in Aberdeen City

I felt my fish was quite small. My partner got the bigger fish. No brown sauce on tables, we always have to ask for brown sauce wherever we go. I don't like tartar sauce. Always a very popular place though, it is nice and big inside. I wish they could play some soft background music. Good value anyway and a very good menu.

I don't want anyone else getting this. Don't, Don't, order online from the Ashvale. We placed an order online 3rd of Jan It was declined as TOO BUSY. Not a problem but they still took the payment 3 days later, it is now 10 days and the money has still not been refunded. They are not interested in sorting this problem out.

Aberdeen doesn't have a lot of fish and chip restaurants, which gives the Ashvale a slight advantage but when you're in the mood for a chippy its great to be able to sit in and enjoy it! They have a wide variety of all your chip shop classics, including a teatime flyer: which is a selection of them, including tea and toast or your choice of fruit juices (surely a can of Fanta or Irnbru could be included also?). I would always recommend booking ahead for a table as peak times can get busy. They have also just increased their opening times, which is good if you're not one for eating early. We had used a TasteCard on our visit which gave us some discount as the prices are quite high but you do get what you pay for, large portions served fresh and with some homemade toast... you can't go wrong!

Average quality fish and chips in quite basic surroundings charging restaurant prices. Please do yourself a favour and go somewhere proper.

The food was fine but there was a minor problem in the toilets. I told a waitress who said she would fix it but a good time later nothing had been done. Poor attentiom to detail.

A classic. The best fish and Chips in Scotland I’d say, grew up going here as a treat as a kid and it’s always so nostalgic, food is top notch. Went to Glasgow and everyone raves about Blue Lagoon being the best but that’s a no XD . The Ashvale is where it’s at!

Large restaurant and chip shop close to the centre of Aberdeen. Very friendly and helpful staff. Good fish & chips with big portions.

Wrong order was put through the till , employee did not know how to operate it and had to ask repeatedly for assistance Waited 30 mins for order, only 4 customers ordered and in restaurant throughout this time. Order completed incorrectly Standard of food was poor, chips undercooked, fish and pie overcooked. Staff were more interested in chatting to each other than serving Restaurant needs to improve front of house service, all staff were young and weren’t given any direction.Spoke to person in charge, again youngster who really wasn’t interested Have used Ashvale many times, won’t be back

I went to a Pilates class next door today & couldn’t find a parking space. Hovered in the ashvale until a space next door came free. When I got out the man working in the ashvale banged on the window and asked me to come over. I went and he proceeded to say to me never to worry about parking in their car park and not to stress. What a lovely man supporting other businesses. I then sent my boyfriend to undo all my Pilates work and he had the best fish supper he’s had in Aberdeen. Top class ashvale. Thank you

A delight to have come back almost 25 years later with my daughter. Fisherman’s Feast just as epic as years back. Fish batter just right. And chips - fresh from the fryer. Great service and even a banter at the end.

Just picked up 2 fish suppers and it was like it was left over fish from the day before and heated up very disappointing

This visit was for takeaway. Fresh cooked Haddock & Chips .... was perfect (as usual).

Had dinner a couple of days ago with my friend and my mum. The place was great; the food was too. However, one of the staff members was horrible to us. No idea why!! Very unwelcoming, very hostile, very disrespectful old grumpy woman. When we first came in she wasn’t happy that we have not booked a place and made it sound like the restaurant is so busy and you won’t get a seat etc. However, that was the opposite of reality; half of the tables, if not more, were empty proving her dishonesty. She gave us a table next to the staff toilets, while most of the other tables were empty. We didn’t let her ruin our evening. We had our fun, but it was quite disgusting the attitude she gave us. Another young waitress who served us the fish was the sweetest. Very kind and respectful. I will certainly not be returning. Maybe if they sack her, I may think about it. Horrible worker.

Food arrived late and almost cold, and on the website I requested for it to be delivered at 5pm, it turned up 30 minutes late. Batter on the fish was also soggy on the bottom

This used to be the best place in the North Eadt of Scotland for fish & chips, but it has seriously gone downhill. The fish was undercooked, the chips were cold, and they served processed peas, and it was expensive. We should have left without paying a penny. I was very sadly shocked.

Just awful bought Haddock and chicken fillets both with chips.Fillets were so burnt couldn't cut them and the chips were like rubber.Such a disappointment

The restaurant is clean, friendly staff and reasonably priced. My first time there since several years. The food is not as good as it used to be (I'd agree that I am quite fussy when it comes to food). I ordered cod and asked for it to be poached. The chef obliged but the whole fish was very dry. Also the chips had a particularly strange taste. I enquired what type of oil they had been cooked in - vegetable oil I was told.

Still the king of the Chippers! Shared a whale between two, fish exceptional batter crispy chips fresh. Lovely member of staff. Was a nice trip down memory lane as we used to go 30 years ago when students.

We always stop here when Down in aberdeen .. Food is absolutely amazing and very generous portions and kids under 5 eat free with 1 adult meal that's purchased. staff were very pleasant and polite highly recommend

Tasty gluten and dairy free fish and chips but slightly dry. This may have been as it was a replacement order because the initial order didn't have gf written on the box. My family enjoyed their normal fish and chips. Delivered at time ordered. Very good service.

Loved stopping by for a fish and chips, while I visited the city for 4 days. It was a lady taxi driver from the airport who recommended it to me. Fish and chips was very good. Portion size was decent and I enjoyed my meal. Interiors are very simple. But service was great!

Very good fish restaurant in Aberdeen. Large selection of different fish dishes. Everything tasted very good. The dining room is not very comfortable, but sufficient and the good food makes up for it. The service was quick and very friendly. Paying by card is possible. A free parking space is right in front of the door. You can also take your food with you.

Me and my partner went here this evening, first and last time for sure. Positives, fish was cooked beautifully, crisp batter with good taste and a moist fllakey flavoursome fish. Negatives. Service is slow. No fish or even chips ready to serve. 15 mins for 2 lots of fish and chips. Can’t put your own salt and vinegar on (this really annoys me about chip shops, like the cost of salt and vinegar is going to make them bankrupt) The chips were blonde, dry as hell, flavourless, like they’d been stood for hours and reheated genuinely the worst chips I have had from a chip shop. Wont be back and won’t recommend, many people have left similar reviews. Not sure when they won the award for best fish and chips but it certainly wasn’t recently.

The fish itself was perfect but... The batter was soggy and full of oil, the chips were peely-wally and under cooked, the onion rings were undercooked and full of oil, the scampi was overcooked and, to top it off, the staff looked at us like we were ruining their Sunday night off.

Posh looking chippy, but food was very average and service poor - had to ask for the water I'd ordered and pickled eggs and onions ordered were overlooked.

Good food nice big Jumbo fish supper only chips need to be done a bit longer , need to be browner too whitish for my taste ! Also I think a small TV would help , something to watch while waiting

I had Jumbo haddock. Bit disappointed. Although batter was crispy it was greasy. Chips not well cut. Not crispy or fluffy and a bit anaemic. Chips in take away far better. Peas from a tin and tasteless. My wife had a fish cake. First bite ok then mostly mashed potato. Only sold McEwans beer in cans. Staff friendly. We ate towards end of evening so a bit quiet and lacking atmosphere which I understand.

Amazing restaurant. We didn't arrive until nearly 10pm but it was no bother to the staff. Will definitely be back.

They overall experience was fine . But ur itson Vouchers are a joke .. it does not include a drink and you get the choice of only 3 main meals .Ridulous Macaroni. Fish and chicken. Let's just say if we knew that we would have never have travelled from forfar £20 fuel And paying £6 for drinks . Not happy .

Was given raw chips and when I told them about it I was given undercooked chips again. No apology whatsoever from staff, they didn't look interested at all

Got a take away tonight, the chips were seriously undercooked, hard to bite into. This is very disappointing, I've been coming to ashvale for years. Their standards have seriously slipped, staff don't look like they care even if the slightest!

We had a takeaway order of a jumbo haddock and chipsteak suppers. Opened the box and was pleased to see two large fish in the box which was great. Unfortunately the batter was super soggy and the fish had a little bit of a bleach taste on one part ,the chips were anaemic and tasteless. The batter on the chipsteak was about three millimetres thick and soggy. Very much disappointed as I have eaten in the restaurant many times and have never had a bad experience, always good quality food. Don't know what went wrong this time but don't think I will try the takeaway again.

Food was briliant, service was amazing and portions are amazing for the price 100% would go back again, manager a was good laugh.

It's large has its own car park and food is good. This is my 3rd time and it's worth a visit.

Been going to this chippy since the day it opened it's doors, it has always been fantastic but unfortunately lately it's going downhill which saddens me to say, I'm not going into detail but the chips were green and hard , wife's fish was cold and soggy, waste of our money tonight after really looking forward to it, have to say can't go back now as will always be wary of the food and don't like wasting money

We went for an event and it was a shame we didn’t change the boys fish to breaded as one of the boys didn’t eat much of his fish. The staff were very helpful.

Having ate at the restaurant just before Christmas and had an excellent meal, we decided to have a takeaway last night (5th Jan.). We ordered two jumbo haddock suppers, only to be very disappointed. We ate less than half before agreeing it wasn't right. The fish tasted stale, no flakiness, bits even yellow in colour. Later we were both feeling unwell and bloated, keeping us awake into the early morning. Having been brought up around fish merchants and fishermen, I would say that the fish wasn’t fresh. Definitely not what we expected from a busy establishment.

I've visited it many times, all was super except one time, it was busy the food wasn't good at all and even the order was wrong. The Ashvale whale is not that big, but you have to finish all the French fries that's the only trick. I would recommend it but avoid the busy times.

Can’t really mark atmosphere as I had a take away. I don’t get to go here often as I don’t live locally but it’s always my first choice when visiting Aberdeen.

Always nice to go to for traditional fish and chips. Choose brand, peas, or even mushy peas and tuck in. Always friendly service and overall a great traditional restaurant.

Hmmm, fish and chips (almost) perfection. A bit of a legend in Aberdeen, best known for it's famous fish and chips. Really, when something is marketed that hard there's really no excuse to order anything else other than their speciality. So is the fish and chips the stuff of legend? Kind of. I mean, it's not bad (and certainly a cut above a normal chipper) but on the other hand it's not truly memorable either. I think the best way of describing it is 'reliably above average' as we have seen consistent high quality food in all the times we have visited. Helpings are generous. The fish and chips comes with a choice of peas (mushy or normal) or baked beans. On the table there's as much sauces and condiments as you could ever want. Oh and kids under 5 eat for free. Service is usually very fast although admittedly we tend to avoid super busy times. Given its legendary local status booking is recommended.

Besten Fish&Chip den ich bisher gegessen habe. Ich empfehle das 2 Gängemenue zu nehmen, hier stimmt das Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis besonders. Absolut freundliche Bedienung und ausreichen Parkplätze, zumindest als ich da war.

What an amazing place! Never in my life have I tried deep-fried haggis but I must say I really did enjoy it. Staff were friendly and got our order correct and brought our food in very little time. Interior was very nice with old pictures of Aberdeen hung up to be looked at while waiting for the lovely meal. Toilets were clean and hygienic as well. The only problem would be the parking. From what I could see there weren't all that many parking spots so when this place is full one might have to park somewhere off the premises. Other than that would recommend this place to anyone who wants to try typical Scottish dishes such as haggis or dare to tackle the Ashvale Whale! Will come here again hoping that next time I will eat that one pound monster!
