The Anchor Bar in Down

We were here for a beer. I hope it will be open soon. This bar had nice atmosphere, we enjoyed our visit here.

The food is lovely but the dessert is horrible The chocolate fudge cake is as dry as the Sahara desert the apple cake was mushy there was a rotten blueberry and instead of vanilla ice cream they gave us strawberry which didn't go well with the desserts at all. Overall it was disgusting, I don't recommend .Oh and the table we had was so wonky I almost spilled my coffee.the girl that was serving us spilled coffee all over the cup

Dog friendly, veggie/ vegan friendly, warm welcome from staff every time, food is excellent - what's no to like!!

Incredible vegan menu, the banana blossom "fish" & chips and the cauliflower wings were both 10/10. So many other delicious sounding options, we'll be back soon to try them all! The perfect location after walking up Slieve Donard too. Very friendly and welcoming staff, thank you!

Called into an with my daughter for lunch as she is Vegan and the new Vegan menu was recommended by friends. I had Chicken tagliatelle with bacon,mushroom and a beautiful cream sauce. It was so tasty,portion just perfect not to much not to little,and was nice served nice and hot. My daughter had the vegan fish and chips served with muscly peas and tar tar sauce,again she said it was first class and cleared the plate We where served by a lovely lady called Geraldine who is a huge asset to the Anchor with her friendly manor and knowledge. We wouldn’t hesitate returning.

Ive been a few times now and i have to say, there must be something in the Guinness because these people know how to have a good time. The bar is buzzing...the lounge(s) are buzzing...out the back is buzzing. They sing, they dance, they love the craic....young and old enjoy the atmosphere equally. How refreshing. The hidden jem of Newcastle....go seek it out.

Decent spot for a few quiet drinks while on a break in Newcastle. Decent steak sandwich and selection of beers and gins. Excellent service too from friendly lady working there, who was a credit to the bar. I liked the look of an unusual beer glass and she gave me one to bring home too. Would return if we’re ever back in the area.

My wife and I was in for dinner for my birthday all the girls that was working could not do enough and when all every friendly its be a few years from I was in the bar. And all way say we should go in for something to eat we will be back for eating again and maybe a few drinks in one of there bar garden

Booked a last minute night away for the night to Newcastle and visited here on Wednesday night .. served by rob and Paul two great guys very friendly and good Crack! Working in the hospitality trade myself for 15 years I couldn’t fault the place. Thanks guys

Great service and a hidden gem in Newcastle. There was good enough variety on the menu and on tap. The staff were friendly and welcoming. I thoroughly recommend the steak sandwich.

A fabulous welcome is in store at this fabulous, friendly pub in Newcastle, I arrived midweek and was greeted by the excellent Rob who runs the place. Within the space of a few minutes he had my food ordered, the perfect pint of guinness and he’d shared ideas for walks in the Mournes. The food, atmosphere and cleanliness were first class. A great place to relax and unwind or to meet together with friends.

Cool bright coloured picnic tables.

Called in about 5.30pm on 6th July and stood at the bar with my husband and 2 year old for 10 minutes being ignored, finally got someone's attention and we were told to take a seat. We left 10 minutes later as no on had come to give us menus or table a drunk order, a d when I went to the bar was told to take a seat again. Not the best service, and it wasnt that busy for someone not to be able to hand me a menu.

Great local pub. Love the Game of Thrones events such fun. Killer burgers on a friday night. Really enjoyed the seafood chowder very tasty. Food is amazing. Great place to watch football or the rugby. Always worth a visit.

The Anchor manages to do that very tricky thing - be a welcoming pub that the many tourists visiting can enjoy without sacrificing having the feel of a proper local for anyone lucky enough to be from Newcastle. The beer and gin selection is vast, the Guinness is perfect and the food is top notch pub grub. There's also a decent selection of entertainment - the open mic style jam sessions on a Friday are the stuff of legend and they also have regular comedy and live music in the back room. Great spot to watch football and rugby too - or just to play pool. Staff are lovely too - not a bad word to say about this place!

Best pub in town. 3 different rooms - traditional pub, a quieter more modern room and pool tables/function room. Oh and friendly beer garden, where most craic & banter is. The food here never disappoints, i love friday burger nights. 5 stars to the chef. Sundays roasts are hard to beat too and the menu changes which is great. There is often music be it a jam session or a gig and always people having a good time. Do not miss this place if your down for a break. And beware you go in for a meal or a pint and you stay until kickout...😁

Perfect location to get a bite to eat to line the stomach for a brilliant nights craic. With local bands & comedians on different nights the anchor is a must visit if your in Newcastle. The staff are super friendly & will go out of their way to make sure everything is right to make a good night out. Lots of different dishes to try & any that i’ve had so far have been very tasty 😋 Cocktails are unreal 🍹

I stayed in Newcastle with my dad for a couple of nights and we ate and drank here. We were made to feel extremely welcome. The staff were very friendly and attentive, the food was tasty and the atmosphere was great. I will definitely be returning and would recommend it to anyone. Thanks, Tim

My family and I are regular visitors here for lunch!! The food is absolutely lovely, the staff are so friendly and helpful and the beers is great!! Would and most definitely will be back, a lot!! Also kids eat free which is unreal!!! Fantastic spot!!

Popped in for lunch as we were both off work and we were not disappointed. My husband had a burger that luckily would feed a big man!

Nothing flash or complicated just good honest pub grub at a sensible price. My two teenage girls had burgers and my wife and I had Chicken burgers. All nicely presented by a very pleasant waitress. Good food, good beer and pleasant service. Will certainly be using again.

We visited the Anchor for Sunday lunch while awaiting the rugby match to start and had a great afternoon. The atmosphere was electric as Ireland beat France in the 6 nations but best of all was the Sunday lunch. £12.95 per adult for 2 courses and a free childs meal was excellent value. The roast beef I had was delicious and the accompanying mash potatoes were smooth and tasty. The yorkshire pudding was big enough to put a roof on and live in if you didn’t eat it as fast as I did. A side of perfectly cooked vegetables and gravy complimented the beef well. My wife had the chicken wrapped in bacon and loved it. She especially loved her pint of orchard thieves cider. For a change I couldn’t manage a dessert as I was stuffed but the pear and almond tart my wife had was lovely. The waitress was very attentive and the bar staff very obliging. We will definitely be back.

After a cold morning walking in the Mournes we called into the Anchor for Sunday lunch. The rugby was on tv and the bar was busy. We managed to get a table and were quickly served our drinks and offered menus. We both chose the roast beef special and were not disappointed as it was cooked beautifully. Dessert was great also. The Anchor is definitely a hidden gem and the staff are friendly and helpful. Next time we are down for a weekend we will be back.

Decent sized bar with different areas to it. The atmosphere was good and there was a live band playing who were great. Bar staff were friendly. The gin and tonics were really good!

Simple bar lunch but cooked beautifully. Really nice atmosphere, great staff and really well priced. No complaints from us plus a good pint. Thank you we will be back .

Called in for a quick bite with my 2 kids. They had the goujons and chips and I had the Anchor burger. They demolished their plates and my burger was unreal. Kids eat free as well and there was a little play area for them too. Will definitely be back for the burger.

Beautiful food and great price. Portions are massive. Great home cooked food. 1st time there but will be a regular now on our trips to Newcastle. Kids eat free which was an added bonus.

Ok, it was 12th July, but I've never seen staff who totally ignore you, absolutely no eye contact at all. Abismal. Waiting 20 minutes to get served.

Highly recommended if u visit newcastle and u want a great live music pub experience! Good pints of selected beers, local ciders! Staff is extremly friendly! Must go in newcastle!!
