Updated review Aug 2024 going down hill fast , asked for a bacon Sandwich a cafe basic and was told the chef has not turned up ! I don’t think this establishment will be open for too long …. nearly perfect.... Lovely staff, great menu and an extensive revamp should make this cafe a please to visit. But lack of wi-fi is a deal breaker, for those who want to use the location to work of study.

What a great little place. The food ia delicious with a great choice on the menu .the staff are extra friendly and the food and drinks was served promptly with a smile. The place is very qaint being litterally part of a working alotment with inside seating and outside .Great styling inside ,very clean and well laid out to accomodate single coupes or groups of diners. Throughly recommend this place for a hearty bite to eat just for a cold or hot drink.

Me and my wife stopped here early doors before setting off through the Peaks. The Allotment Cafe is so welcoming and the dim lighting and furnishing give such a cosy atmosphere. We ordered the English Breakfast which was fantastic and filled us up for the whole day! The staff are lovely and so friendly, they can't do enough for you! Will definitely visit again when back in the area ❤️

This place used to be fantastic! Big pieces of fab cake, great food. Now £4 for a pathetic slice, ypu have to pick your food up yourself at the counter, clear your own dishes.... but tips still expected! Not sure what for. Certainly not the cheery smile that greets you. (Sarcasm) How sad It was a little gem

Attempted to come here 5 times and only been served twice. Refused a take away coffee because it was Mother’s Day (if we sat in we would have been served, no logic as to why). Went back for another visit to sit outside and have a drink and was welcomed by a very polite and friendly lady who took our order, only to be met with the rudeness of the Australian lady who seems to not want any customers (the same lady who has refused to serve us almost every time we have been!!) and very slow service despite it being quiet. Will not be returning. The Hatch just opposite is a very nice alternative and very friendly.

We haven't been since it re-opened with new owners. Very pleasantly surprised that the breakfasts are just as good as they always have been (pancakes are even better according to my wife), the coffee is better and the service/welcome was great. Plus there is now a small children's play area in the excellent garden area.

Don’t bother unless for cake. I’m not sure what’s happened to the place but it’s really gone downhill. Change in owner I’m told? Service was shoddy to say the least, served by the Aussie girl, who took a good 20 minutes to remember my drink and I repeated cappuccino to her 3 times and she still asked if I wanted a latte…. The chef (if you can call him that) couldn’t even make my girlfriend’s toastie right, burnt on the inside, with cheese that wasn’t melted? I opted for a full English, the sausages were nice and that’s where it ends I’m afraid. More grease than the musical. We did get given free cake as an apology for the disaster service, which was one of the nicest brownies I’ve had in a long time, and the only thing worth paying for. Defo wouldn’t recommend I’m afraid, unless you’re going for free cake!

Two breakfasts two drinks £ 30:80 the bacon was like boot leather the beans were cold the mushrooms greasy and the hash browns were burnt . Wouldn't feed my dog with the food . Not only that from placing our order the food took 35 minutes to arrive at our table and not even an apology for the lateness and the place wasn't even half full with customers.

First off, lovely cafe, cosy with a real fire and plenty of parking available. Staff are very approachable, sincere, warm, and welcoming (cannot fault this part of the customer experience). Some tables were marked as reserved, so we shared with another family. When other drop-in customers attended after us, they were shown to these tables to utilise. On ordering, I asked to substitute soda bread for normal bread, which was no issue. Menu said poached eggs with avocado. What arrived was 1 piece of bread, half an avocado, and 1 egg that was virtually fully cooked (not runny). Food tasted fine. I just thought that as the menu specified eggs , there would have been more than one, and it was quite steep for £9. The rest of the family happy with their meals. Would go again, but just for a drink.

Had seen a sign for the Allotment Cafe on a walk which took us onto the canal. Needs to be changed to make it clearer that it is in the mill complex. Tried it today for the first time. Pre-made sandwiches choice of two and soup, lots of baked goods which looked delicious and various drinks. Informed our sandwiches would come in take out box at the moment as cafe under new ownership. Picnic style benches outside and cosy seating inside which they didn't mind that we sat at. Good luck to the new owners, will be interested to see how the cafe develops but will certainly call again, great half way stop on our walk.

Do not bother asking to swap or change anything on the menu. Unbelievably bad customer service. I have visited a few times and had no issues previously so recommended the cafe to my brother and his partner for us to visit together. They always order eggs Benedict anywhere they go for brunch, so before we travelled 30 minutes to get there we checked the website menu, which had eggs Benedict on. We sat outside as it was a nice day, unfortunately we were then presented with a different menu, with no eggs Benedict on. The waitress then pointed out that most of the items on the menu were not available. They did however have eggs royale on the menu and available (which is the same but has salmon on, not bacon). Neither my brother or his partner eat salmon so when the waitress returned to take our order, they requested to swap the salmon for bacon. The waitress just said no. We were all dumbfounded at her blunt response, so then questioned why it was a flat no (I have never had this happen at a brunch place before?!), the waitress replied that swapping for bacon would put their food ratios out in the kitchen so it just wasn’t possible. To us this made absolutely no sense. I then remarked that their website says they serve eggs Benedict so would they be able to make an exception. She said no again. I said that maybe they should update their website then. The waitress said “oh right then!!” while rolling her eyes and then abruptly left the table and went back inside. The ‘manager’ then came out and told us that we had upset her staff member - at no point had we raised our voices or become rude so I am really at a loss as to why she was upset. She proceeded to tell us that the chef had designed the menu to be eaten exactly as is and swaps were not possible, then telling us to leave and calling us weird. She became quite confrontational and was shouting by the time we got up to leave. The chef had come outside to watch this exchange. It was quite embarrassing as the other customers looked on, and it all seemed to have erupted from no where. I have honestly never had such a bizarre encounter in a brunch place, or any restaurant anywhere I have visited. I find it very odd that a cafe on an industrial estate are above swapping out salmon for bacon on a classic breakfast meal… you’re not a Michelin star restaurant. Would this still be the case if someone had an intolerance? The customer is definitely not always right in this establishment! I would suggest going elsewhere if you want to make any slight amendments to the especially designed fry ups and bog standard breakfasts that they are serving.

Drove 30 minutes to visit today as we had heard good things and the menu online looked good. On arrival the waitress listed around 5 dishes that was not available on the menu (this is a lot considering it’s not a huge menu). Luckily she didn’t say eggs Benedict was unavailable as this is what I travelled for, however this was not on the menu given to us, but eggs royale was, I don’t eat fish so I politely asked to swap the salmon for bacon (as other dishes had bacon on), I got a blunt ‘No’, which was very confusing so we questioned it and she said due to ‘ratios’ of food in the kitchen (considering they didn’t have half of the menu, out of good will they should have honoured the change to keep the custom). I asked for a few moments to decide what else I wanted to eat as the waitress was hovering over me and I felt under pressure. She went inside and told her colleagues that we had ‘upset’ her, all because we asked why we couldn’t swap, we wasn’t rude about it we just didn’t understand how a small change could not be made. Then another team member came over and quite rudely asked what we wanted, so again we asked her if we could swap the salmon for bacon, she also said no, so I asked if I could have it without the salmon and add bacon to which she also said no and followed with ‘the chef has created the dishes and he wants to make it as it is on the menu’ and I said ‘I don’t eat fish’ and she then responded with ‘you’s don’t have to eat here if yous don’t want it’. We said that the menu online says eggs Benedict and her response was that the person that does the website has been on holiday and been ill, didn’t really seem believable. Extremely poor customer service, as you can imagine at this point we were highly frustrated with the attitude, her tone of voice was also disgusting. She then said we upset her team member which again we was confused why it was so dramatic when we was not rude to her, we just asked a simple swap question. If it was an allergy or food intolerance would they not cater for this either? As that’s the dish the chef has created, sorry but he’s not invented eggs royale so no need for the drama. I don’t understand how if I order a dish, I am not allowed to have something removed if I don’t eat it?? I was willing to pay extra for the bacon as it’s an optional extra on the sandwiches so the ‘ratio’ wouldn’t be out of proportion, they’d of just had some extra salmon in the kitchen. We had enough of her attitude towards us so we got up and left without touching our drinks, she went inside and loudly called us weirdo’s to which I then got angry and shouted at her, she came back outside and started shouting with me infront of all the customers. Never have I encountered this sort of service from any restaurant, such a shame as the location is lovely, just no people skills in the slightest and the menu (that isn’t online) is whack anyway.

I feel like the main reason this place does well is more because it's basically the only coffee shop/brunch place in Mossley. Don't get me wrong, the food isn't bad, by any means at all - but it's really, really pricey for what it is, and if you want anything adjusting - even slightly - it just isn't going to happen. Swapping an egg for an extra sausage or even a tomato at this place is completely out of the question - 'we don't make swaps' is what you will be told. There's also no syrups for the coffees, so you can have your latte, but not with your fancy syrup (but you'll pay the same price - if not more, actually...) Interesting/rather shocking fact: My mum, little boy, niece and I often go to San Carlo Gran Cafe in Selfridges for brunch, and our total for pretty much the same food & drinks (which were considerably nicer in Selfridges, may I add) actually amounted to £12 LESS than the Allotment Cafe. So, you can eat in a designer department store at a more affordable cost than you can a local wooden cafe in Mossley. I'm not sure if the staff perhaps think this place is fancier than it is, but it's nothing to scream about, by any accounts whatsoever. It's convenient, but that's kind of it, really. To summarise, food is good but nothing to write home about. Service is below par. The price for what you get (experience, comfort, service, food, customer service/satisfaction) - extremely expensive and unjustly so. You'd be better going a little bit further and going to Kobe or Caffe Grande Abaco in Uppermill, instead.

I've lived in Mossley all my life and only found out about the existence of this place recently, but I'm definitely glad I did. Went back today (my third visit) to find a new menu. I like everything about this cafe and the food is excellent. As a dog lover I don’t even mind canines everywhere. I’ve been several times and my issue is the service can be hit and miss and sometimes it just doesn’t make sense. For example, the special last weekend was a ‘brunch burger’ which came with cheese, bacon and an egg. I asked for it without the egg to be told ‘we can’t make amendments to the specials’. I didn’t want an ‘amendment’ I just didn’t want the egg - surely that is a/possible b/saves them the cost of an egg. It’s simply made no sense - unless it was a ready made ‘ping and ding’ special. I’ve worked in hospitality for years and this was just illogical. Needless to say I gave up and ordered something else, which was cheaper, so the cafe lost out. As I say - so close to brilliant, just maybe a staff training issue?

I’ve visited this place on 5 occasions now. Each time I am hopeful, as it always seems busy, suggesting that the business is doing something right. However, each time I have visited, I leave feeling completely underwhelmed. I’ll start with the positives of the place: *Location-if you’re walking along the canal or visiting Woodend Mill, this is a conveniently located cafe. *Ambience-nice decor, lighting and layout of tables, creating a cosy, chilled out ambience. Beyond the above, I really struggle to understand why this place is so popular. The food and cakes are nice enough, but nothing special. The prices are pretty high too, which is fine if you’re getting something seriously tasty, but I have not found this to be the case. I understand that local, fresh produce comes at a price, but the food produced still needs to impress. Customer service wise, I’m also not overly impressed. I’ve visited previously where the female owner served us food and drink with one hand, the other hand holding a dog on a lead! I’m not a massive dog lover, so having a dog sniffing around your table wasn’t great. I’ve also visited when the female owner was quite rude to myself and a friend, simply because we were early and were waiting near the premises awaiting the place opening. On another occasion, myself, partner and child fancied a coffee as we had been walking along the canal. On entering the cafe, it was clearly busy and no tables were available. In a pretty curt manner, we were just told that they had no tables and turned away. No offer of a table in half an hour or the suggestion that we have a takeout coffee and cake. Most recently (this week) I visited with a friend and two 5 year olds. Ambience and service was fine, but my Chai tea latte simply tasted of hot milk. I asked my friend to test it too and she couldn’t taste any spices either. Based on my previous experiences of the place, I did not complain about my drink, but I won’t be visiting this place again. I feel that I’ve given this place several chances now and it just doesn’t cut the mustard. I do hope that the owners take note of their reviews as I feel that the place could be great with some improved customer service and some tweaks to make the food and drinks worth the price tag.

The concept seems sound, locally produced food well served, but it failed to live up to expectations. The full breakfast we tried cost almost twelve pounds per person but was pretty mediocre both in terms of quality and quantity: I've had far better at around half the price. The ambience is good if you ignore the loud music, and the garden tables very pleasant on a summer's day. Judging from others around us, this seems to be a place where people like to be seen rather than a place for eating.

What a hidden gem. We've had take away pizzas before but tonight was the first time we have eaten in. The staff are really lovely so friendly and helpful, the atmosphere is warm and relaxed. The food is in our opinion something else. We shared a Prosciutto and mushroom pizza, cajun chicken wings and a feta salad. The pizza and wings were cooked to perfection, and the salad was fresh and tasty. Then came the cinnamon doughnuts with a dipping sauce, exceptional. Definitely be coming here again and it will be sooner rather than later.

Hidden away on an industrial estate in a wooden shack affair, this lovely small cafe did us proud on our walk on Friday. Brunch of eggs benedict certainly hit the spot. As did the takeway cinnamon doughnuts with dipping chocolate ! Enjoy !

We have visited this independent cafe on several occasions when on walks with our golden retriever. This is a lovely small cafe with a cute interior & fire place offering great cakes, Sandwiches and coffee. There are also a small number of tables outside if the weather is nice. The staff are always very friendly and accommodating of our four legged family member. Highly recommend if you are in the area. #HonestMary

I heard all about their amazing root vegetable sandwich and as a vegan of course had to try. There isnt much for vegans in the area so the allotment cater amazingly well! Their portions are huge and hearty! Perfect coffees and teas selection, and of course cannot fault the chefs and service. Go there NOW

I've been to the Allotment Cafe 4 seperate times over the past 12 months. Each time has been impressive. The most striking aspect is the eclectic menu. It changes with the seasons and is so refreshing to see the staples that people go out for (full English, burger etc) but also completely new ideas such as their take on a butternut squash risotto and their famous root veg sandwich. This doesn't stop at food either as they have the staple drink choices such as cappuccino, flat whites etc but also specials such as matcha, beetroot, turmeric latte among others. The setting and atmosphere is really lovely. Everyone is friendly and if you have any allergies, intolerances they are understanding and can amend any recipe to suit your needs. Speaking with the chef Rory afterwards he actually said he enjoys doing this! They have great choice for vegan too for both sweet and savoury. It isn't like a chain coffee shop where they have one option. They treat intolerance and allergies as equal to somebody without any requirements. It is great to have such a good independent place like this and I'd always choose it over any chain on skill alone. Also the portions are absolutely massive too and is actually much cheaper than I'm accustomed to paying.

Brilliant cafe. Chelsey & Rory have built up an amazing cafe. The food is always delicious and the lunch menu changes each season so there's always something new to try! Our group walks from here every Saturday and they always produce delicious food for us, whether it's a bacon buttie or a beef bourguignon. Food is locally sourced, and we highly recommend the full English breakfast! The cafe is quite small and is very popular so we'd advise booking a table at the weekend. There is seating outside though, and most of it is under cover so it doesn't matter what the weather is like. Staff are always friendly and nothing is too much trouble.

went here a few months ago and was disappointed with the bread, I had vegan falafel on naan bread, I had to leave the bread as it was like a brick, I did complain and got it changed and the second lot was just the same. It was like it had been warmed in the microwave and left in too long. Went back again this weekend, I am always happy to give people a second chance, but to no avail. The sandwiches we ordered roasted veg and hummous on white and one on brown. The white bread was inedible so It cost me £14 for about 4 forkfuls of very small roasted veg. The tea was nice though. I did mention the bread which they buy in from a shop in Greenfield, sorry Allotment - ex Flying T-Pot but we wont be back again.

my food was on time but the attitude of some of your drivers at the moment is absolutely appalling. They should be ringing my door buzzer not ringing me to say I'm here. what sort of customer etiquette are you training these drivers. it's a good job my back is fixed otherwise I wouldn't be able to go downstairs
