My wife and I visited The Ale Gate during a two night stay in Alnwick and were struck with how friendly and relaxed it was, with a good range of real ales (which suited me) and local gins (which suited my wife). We liked it so much we returned the following evening. The clientele seemed to be a pleasant mix of locals and folk on holiday with the very nice lady (owner ?) behind the bar making everyone feel welcome and included. I loved it and wish it was my local. Maybe I should move to Alnwick. Hopefully my wife will come too.

This is a popular place. Not surprising, they have an excellent range of ales and other drinks, and the staff are very friendly. No music means conversation is the order of the day.

A fab little pub with a lovely atmosphere and a fridge full of different ciders so absolutely a win for us! Very reasonably priced too. We didn't have any food; there were crisps available.

What a fantastic place to spend the evening, not a pub as such more like like someone's front-room with a great selection of beers and spirits, friendly staff and pork scratchings. Great atmosphere from the people that use the place nobody shouting or being too loud, just people that talk . Very clean & tidy place toilets are up a few steps . Would definitely recommend this place. Carl

Good selection of real ales at popular prices. Plain interior. Friendly chat. live music on Sundays. From £3.80 a pint. Just a suggestion - add an inn sign and put tables and chairs outside in all weathers - it is easy to pass by without knowing it is a pub.

Little gem. Lovely atmosphere. Very friendly. Super selection of drinks to suit everyone. Went for another evening of Tiddly Painters. A great evening of fun.

No food. Nice, cosy and friendly. We have regular meetings here and always recieve a warm welcome. Very reasonable prices. No onside parking but can park on road after 6pm or use public car park behind the Playhouse, a few minutes walk. For those with mobility issues, Has a step into building and stairs to the top half of the bar and a lot of steep stairs up to the room which is for hire.

First visit a couple of days earlier had a varied selection of ales but not to our taste. Bar was very busy. On Friday it looked like they had an Abbeydale beer on so we made sure we got there as it opened but it had already sold out the night before. Gutted but that's how popular it is. Stayed a couple of hours until our bus was due. Landlady is really friendly and knowledgeable just as it should be. Got talking to a lovely couple from Huddersfield and had a great laugh. Look forward to our next visit. 6 months on we popped in but didn't have beers to suit us again so just had halfs. Duo were rehearsing songs which was a lovely touch on a very rainy day. Hopefully next time the beers will suit us and we can spend more time.

Came here this evening for some beers, as we were staying in a guesthouse around the corner. It's a great little place. The owner was super friendly and knowledgeable about what we'd like. Had some games to play which we loved, and the cutest doggy. Stayed for 2, but would definitely come back next time we visit Alnwick.

Excellent ales and friendly young guy behind the bar. Price was very good.

I'm no beer connoisseur but there were 9 different beers I like either on hand pump or draught. Only had time for 3 real ales which were all great, sadly didn't have time for the brew dog options, the shipyard or the Citra ale. The wife had white wine and prosecco. Prices seemed reasonable too with the seating, decor and atmosphere pleasant. Happy we called in while on holiday. Cheers

I have seen that Alnwick’s first micro bar was open so we had to call in. A great variety of very well kept local cask ale, local gins, spirits, keg and soft drinks were available. The bar was very knowledgeable and we had a good chat about the brewing industry. We have really enjoyed ours visits to great ale house and when back in Alnwick will be calling again. There is parking on the Main Street in Alnwick which is not far to walk. We had bicycles so we’re able to lock up outside the bar.

Proper real ale bar. Similar to our craft bar in scarborough. Ace beers, comfy seats, what more could we ask for?

Good range of cask ales, dog friendly, nice folks. Generally cool vibe, though we went right as it opened at 4:30pm on a Monday so were the only folks in and had to create a bit of our own ambiance.

Popped in on the off chance with our relatives from Canada and were welcomed with a smile. Great knowledge and friendliness.

My wife and I had an all-too-brief visit to this super bar whilst waiting for a table at the nearby Caffè Tirreno (excellent BTW, and they recommended the Ale Gate). It has more of a bar feel than a traditional pub, but none the worse for that. The atmosphere was lively and there was a wide mix of customers. The service was very friendly and the bar had a great range of drinks at very reasonable prices. What's not to like? Recommended.

Fabulous town centre micro pub serving an astonishing range of real ales, ciders and spirits. We had a really warm welcome and enjoyed every minute of being there. Well deserved good beer guide listing. Do not miss this place if you are visiting Alnwick.

Nice beer and a lovely warm welcome

Great welcoming pub with a nice, friendly atmosphere. We popped in on a Sunday afternoon, and the live music was good without being too intrusive, so we could still hear our conversation. We're not really beer drinkers, so I can't comment on the brewery, but everyone else seemed to be enjoying their pints. Very dog friendly too, with resident pub dog. We'll definitely be back next time we're in the area.

The Ale Gate is a great place to visit, with up to six real ales. It is a relatively new micro pub on the sit of a retail unit, which comprises of a lower main bar area with a second elevated floor to the rear. A must place to visit if you want a pint of real ale, and is dog friendly.

Ale was OK, but completely lacking atmosphere on our visit (Saturday)...passed by on another night and looked good. Maybe just unlucky

First time visit yesterday evening. Really nice little bar close to the town centre of Alnwick. It was a week night early evening and still pretty busy. I took that as a good sign, must be popular. It’s clean and stylish inside. A contemporary and relaxed look and feel. I’d definitely go back and would recommend as a place to call in for a quick drink or to sit and pass a few hours of an evening.

A proper pub. Really friendly. The sort of place you can go in and soon become part of the craic. Excellent beer range all well kept with a fast turnover. Knowledgeable staff happy and willing to offer a taster. They also do a vast gin range for those who aren't real ale aficionados.

Friendly micropub, just outside the city walls. Handy for the first or last drink if heading into town. Clean and tidy.

Really chilled out bar. Guest beers are their thing. 3 beers less than 12 quid in 2022 Sofas on the mezzanine floor. Relax!

Great bar with lots of great Ales, the staff were great too....we will be back here. Some nice music from the four musicians on Holiday Sunday as well.

This (presumably) ex retail unit was opened in March 2019 and straight into the battle against covid consequences. Resilient and now fighting back it offers a good selection of ales and other drinks in comfortable surroundings which I would theme as 'retro'; see phots to better determine yourself. Very friendly bar staff and locals across all ages. A trip to the loos leads you to view the casks etc in what I guess we're offices. Toilets are limited and I suspect still a work in progress.

Large spacious bar situated on the main road through Alnwick. Selection of 5 cask,local beers plus the usual lagers. Ciders on offer too plus a refrigerator with canned craft beers. Old school music and very friendly staff and locals. Dog friendly.

Great little find in Alnwick centre. Lovely landlady, great ales and very well kept pub. Live music Sunday was a bonus.

Smashing place to visit for a first class pint and a friendly laid back ambience. We'd booked Lindon Hall for New years eve ,but left after the meal and let the New year in at the Ale gate so glad we did.

Really good selection of of local beers and gins. A fatasticly friendly couple own the place. The is no food (except crisps and nuts (and scratchings) but who cares? Get a kebab on the way out! Well worth a visit..... And a really obscure discussions on the best vacuum cleaner for dogs included with your beer for free!

Absolutely lovely quirky pub with really welcoming owners & Indy the dog is just adorable and very partial to a few crisps. Very Homely feel about the place and the decor is very retro but works really well. Highly Recommend a visit to The Ale Gate it is a must if visiting Alnwick we will definitely go back when we come again, Thank you for excellent service and such a welcoming vibe loved it.
