Not sure how this place has the reviews it does, perhaps we got a bad turn. Overpriced, barely any meat in the dishes and poor service when enquired about the size of prawn toast portion

Our first visit to a Thai restaurant. We went with our son and family to celebrate his birthday. The food was excellent and the menu varied and extensive. Being a Thursday the restaurant was quiet and possibly lacked atmosphere but the staff were attentive and the food very good.

I had my first Thai meal here 9 years ago and thought maybe Thai food just isn't for me - and did not have another until recently. I reluctantly went to a Thai restaurant weeks before this visit with a group for a special occasion, a large Thai restaurant chain and it blew me away. Every dish was fresh, packed with flavour, and just a bursting surprise with each dish we had. I was excited at the prospect of finding the best Thai restaurant in Essex as we go out for a meal once every 2 weeks or so to enjoy finding the best international cuisine over time in Essex. So - we couldn't wait to come back to this local restaurant and support our town, and hopefully find our new weekly haunt. Unfortunately despite my willingness to find something positive the only good thing was the price, but that doesn't amount to happiness, the food was so poor. I honestly can't believe how bad it was. When you feel you can buy a better meal from a tin or the frozen section in Asda you know you wont be returning. I do not believe there is any pride in the food here, just business. I do see many really good reviews on tripadvisor so I'd recommend giving it a go and decide for yourself. Just go with low expectations and you wont be disappointed.

Myself and partner collected a takeaway from here tonight, the duck wasn’t fresh, the sauce that came with was extremely vinegary and the pad Thai and green curry was inedible, didn’t taste like any Thai food I have ever tasted. When I took the food back and quietly explained my reasoning I was met with extreme rudeness from the owner/manager who basically told me to leave the food and to never come back, whilst huffily throwing the food I had returned back into the bag. I thought this behaviour was completely unwarranted and created an uncomfortable atmosphere for both myself and other diners when I was trying to keep the matter calm and quiet so as not to cause a scene and put others off their food. Wouldnt go back if you paid me, awful food, only outdone by the manager/owners awful behaviour. Avoid.

I have not been here for some months. I used to come here every week. Last visit I complained about the "salty" taste of everything. That was a few months ago. Last week I returned optimistic to give it another go, I can honestly say that this was probably one of the worse meals I have eaten in any Thai restaurant. I don't know what has happened? I left half of my pad Thai because it was oily and lacking any ingredients. My Tom Kha Het was again made to look like dishwater, with none of the ingredients that go to make the soup tasty. Unfortunately, no one seemed bothered that I had left my food and the owner (who I know well) made herself scarce as I left. Honestly, I am so disappointed as I have supported this restaurant from day one. I am not saying that you will not get good food here. But unless there is a change I doubt that I will go back again. I am not angry, or vengeful, just bitterly disappointed.

Usually one of my favourite restaurants for many years but tonight was an absolute disaster. Firstly ordered a bottle of pinot grigio and received a bottle of pinot blush, no big deal but was a sign of things to come. Asked for a jug of tap water 3 times but never received it. My friend ordered a lamb dish but received beef it looked like beef and tasted like beef. When asked the " acting manager" she said " well it looks like beef" she took it away for a few seconds then returned saying it's lamb ( My friend can't stomach beef and threw up when she got home) I ordered a pad thai and chicken curry ( Pad thai came out 5 mins before the curry so it was nearly cold but not a big deal) big portion and delicious so I decided to save half for take away. Was later informed that my food was thrown away because they received a phone call?? I said I wasn't happy about this and was told "acting manager " would come and see me. No sight of her but a bill was hastily shoved on our table without saying anything and not offering dessert no one asked for the bill. I complained and explained that half my food was thrown away I expect to be compensated. A while later another bill was shoved at us for 15% off the pad thai, a whopping £2 the entire bill. I decided then to get out of my chair and seek out " acting manager" as she obviously couldn't be bothered to come and talk to me at the table. When I asked why the service was so bad she said its because the owners are away and it's just how it is. When I asked her why we didn't get our water she said I shouldn't complain because it was free! This is the first time I have ever complained about a meal, I have had dining experiences where there have been minor problems and still had an apology. No luck here! This whole thing was s**t show. The owners of the thai bualang are kind and welcoming with wonderful food and wonderful service, sadly when they go away they left it in bad hands.

The one star refers to the owners of this amazing restaurant. I give it 5 stars for the food. The owners are rude. Never greet or say thank you when leaving (only concerned about counting their money at the front door) The restaurant was extremely busy on the Saturday evening. Not once did the owners lend a hand to the overworked waitresses. It used to be a happy place to visit. The waitresses used to joke and enjoy themselves. They don't look happy anymore! Sad!

Visited recently for the first time to try their set lunch menu. £9.95 for two courses is amazing value, and the food was really good! We went for Tom yum and Tom kha gai soups to start, which both hit the spot (especially on a cold day). The red Thai curry was also tasty and hot, although a little salty, and the prawns were cooked to perfection. Will definitely be returning. Thanks for a lovely lunch

Didn't get the usual free Thai crackers while looking at the menu so I asked if they had stopped giving these out and they promptly gave us some Chinese prawn crackers? Bit odd. Last weekend I returned to this restaurant and see that they are putting new dishes on the menu. I have eaten Khao Soi before but this time it was just excellent. The dish is a "one plate" meal from the Northern Area of Thailand. Basically there is a bowl of curry with soft noodles in it topped with the meat of your choice and garnished with herbs, then the whole thing is topped with crispy noodles...delicious. I chose duck as my meat and it was crispy and succulent. You have other meats but duck is my personal favourite. Easy to order too, one dish does the lot.

This is a chicken based curry dish from Northern Area and is really "street food" the dish has a topping of crispy noodles and normally some preserved veggies. But if you want it you gotta ask for it!! Also, tested was King Prawn stir fried in black pepper corn, very nice if you want something tasty and not too filling. The owners are working hard to provide new dishes, keep supporting this restaurant as it is the only restaurant in the area which offers real Thai food and atmosphere.

The restaurant does not need introduction so I just wanted to review for those of you who are dedicated to Thai food, I just want to keep you updated on some menu recommendations. There are a few things on the menu at Thai Bualuang that you won't.get elsewhere. One being "One day beef" which is a pretty standard Thai snack turned into a starter by our friends in the kitchen there, on the menu as "Thai Jerky" so often overlooked. Also Po Thaek soup, with seafood, quite spicy and not your standard Chelmsford cuisine. By request only is "Hor Muk" a dish from the central area around Phitsonulok, it is a very tasty sharing dish incorporating fish or prawn. I had it last night and it was really good. I keep trying to get Kuhn Noi to put "Kaw Soi" on the menu, but so far only a promise of this uniquely Northern Thailand dish. Everything else as good as usual

When I started reading the reviews of Thai Bualang, I got excited because I am quite a foodie and I just love Thai food. I was not disappointed. My two absolute favourite Thai starters are Tom Yam soup and Som Tum Salad. I opted for the latter which is usually made with unripe papaya but on this menu had been substituted with swede. It worked really well and was absolutely delicious and refreshing (but also rather spicy, so be warned.) My partner started with tempura prawns, and we shared both dishes which worked out very well. We then opted for sizzling fish (tuna for me and salmon for him) with various side dishes - all delicious and all served - as expected - sizzling. Perhaps we should have been more authentic and had Thai beer to accompany the meal, but the house Shiraz was very drinkable. We will definitely be back as we were impressed by both flavours and service and I now need to figure out how to recreate that salad at home!

(Arctic Monkeys) - Thau Bualang South Woodham Ferrers Thai Bualang is, as its name suggests, a Thai restaurant on the edge of South Woodham Ferrers town centre. Its address is Guild Way, but it actually sits at the junction of Guild Way and Inchbonnie Road. It was previously the Rupali Indian restaurant and before that, the Town's bakery. There's still a wheatsheaf optimistically pargetted on the outside wall. Inside the décor hasn't changed significantly since its Rupali days, but they've added some nice Thai decorations. I've written before that, in my experience, one doesn't judge Thai restaurants on their décor. I'd been invited to join some friends for Sunday lunch, which sounded like a good idea, so on a bitterly cold February Sunday lunchtime a small group of us turned up at Thai Bualang for lunch. The place was deserted, which was a surprise, but we were shown to a table and handed the 'set lunch' menu - it says 'weekdays only', but clearly they were happy to serve it on a Sunday lunchtime. I ordered Chicken Tom Yam Soup to start, with a Green Chicken Curry as a main, two other members of my party ordered the curry, the fourth ordered the 'Lak Sar Noodle Soup'. Two ordered Chicken Satay starters. My Tom Yam soup was delicious, not overly spicy, but loaded with chicken and fresh chillies. The Green Chicken Curry was similarly spicy, but not scarily so; I like my food spicy and I might be tempted to order something extra spicy on a future trip. And there will be future trips; between four of us the three ladies enjoyed a couple of bottles of chardonnay, while I polished off a few (small) bottles of Singha beer. The final bill, for four of us, came to a tad under seventy quid which for delicious, freshly cooked food, is astonishing value. I don't understand why the place wasn't crammed with people. Next time I'll try the Lak Sah, it looked splendid.

Group of 4 did not all get their food at the same time, one ordered side dish forgotten.Food was hot and tasty and would eat there again. Evening ruined by a group of 10 all trying to out do each other for loudness. In a small restaurant like this noise can dominate. Has a Thai feel to the decoration of the restaurant.

Both were worried they wouldn't like it but i think they were very surprised, Sizzling Beef and Sizzling Duck, Chicken Pad Thai and Egg Fried Rice was a nice intruduction. My wife and i had Lamb Masaman Curry and Stir Fry Tamarind Squid. All cooked to perfection. Restauarant was very quiet but the staff were all very nice. Will be going back soon.

Went to the restaurant again last weekend. Awesome food, my favourite is still Chu Chi King Prawn. Try it with the Tod Mun Kaow Pod for a change instead of rice. Thai Bualuang works hard to give customers the best Thai experience they can. There are a selection of Thai beers, they play Thai music and the kitchen staff are all Thai people. One can never criticise the food, or the service and the meals are exceptional value. Don't be put off by the odd comment from attention seekers claiming they had a bad experience. I really don't understand people who do this. They are to be pitied.

Possibly the worst Thai take away i've ever had. The thai green curry was watery and flavourless. Our set menu for two consisted of one spring roll, one chicken bite and one satay chicken each. Veg was oily, rice tasted like that out of a packet, beef was tough and chicken tasted like it was defrosted.Massively overpriced, would never go here again.

For years I have been keeping this place quiet and therefore It really pains me to do this, but here goes, they deserve it too much!Being well versed in many cuisines after 30 years of business travelling I feel blessed to be so lucky to have found probably one of the best Thai food restaurants here in the UK and its within walking distance! I was literally quite flabbergasted when I first popped in for a lunchtime special a few years ago.Choose how you want your Thai food cooked; Green Curry, Red Curry, Jungle Curry, yellow Curry, Stir Fried with chilli and basil or with ginger or cashews or noodles, garlic and pepper or Phad Thai or Phad Khee....whatever and then choose your meat, fish or veg and they will cook to order.Try the hot spicy tuna fillet with chilli and veg or the Lamb or Duck in a jungle curry of veg, red chili and herbs. MMmmmmmmm.Wash it down with a Singh Beer.I have to say that it’s also nice to experience the fragrance and Thai music which adds to the appeal. Too many restaurants forget this and play meaningless rubbish western pop these days. NOT so here.Prices are really, really reasonable and range from £5 to £9 for a whole dish and rice. The lunchtime specials can be £7 for two courses. It’s all fresh produce and all freshly cooked apart from some of the typical the starters, but we always find that one main course for two of us to share as a starter without the rice is a better option. The brown rice prawn crackers are the best and tastiest anywhere and free to start with each sitting. In short, this place is reasonably priced, authentic and the food is wonderfully flavoursome and aromatic.Recommended A+++ but don’t all rush to go please because I like to be able to book a table as and when I can!

Our second visit to this restaurant with family and we were not disappointed. The restaurant was quite busy but the service was good. The staff could not have been more friendly and offered suggestions regarding the menu that we found helpful. This restaurant offers a wide selection of food to choose from and the menu is very well annotated providing information such as chili heat, contains peanuts, and several other options we wen't aware of that can appear on a menu. The wait for food was average but it is freshly cooked so well worth any wait.Drinks are reasonably priced with a good range of soft drinks, alcoholic drinks and even tap water if you so desire. The restaurant offers takeaway if you don't have time to sit in but if you want to dine in then I would suggest booking a table.I would suggest booking

My wife and I payed our first visit to this delightful Thai Restaurant this evening and we were not disappointed. My wife is a Coeliac and the very friendly staff could not have been more helpful. Our starters were Thai fish cakes fore Joy and Poh Taek soup for me, absolutely lovely. Main courses, Yellow Curry in coconut milk, pineapple, onion, tomato, potato and carrot topped with crispy shallots. Mmm,mmm.I had Lemon grass and chilli Tilapia, tilapia fillets crispy fried with Thai herbs, chilli and lemon grass garnished with basil. We were both so full we couldn't manage a dessert but we will next time, armed with our 15% off voucher for our next visit. ( That won't be too long).

We visited this restaurant with our family and loved it. The food was very good, portion sizes were good and the staff so helpful, taking time to explain the dish to us. There was huge choice and only having been to a Thai restaurant once before we were glad of the help. We will be returning. One word of caution the Jungle Curry, blows your head off. Lovely friendly, cosy place to eat.

Lovely atmousphere and fantastic food. Good sized portions and fresh ingredients. Was really impressed at how fast the food came out too. Only complaint is that the drinks are served in those silly slim glasses for £2.50. They have a larger one on the menu for £4 but this choice was not offered to us. They don't fill it up to the top and there is a gap in the bottom so you don't even get a child's portion. That is the only complaint but the food was amaazing as said. Couldn't fault it at all. Shame about the drinks

Since I last reviewed the place has had more makeover done and now has a smart new flooring...very posh. There are a few new menu items too. One such is the "Poh Taek soup. Now I am generally critical of the soup selection in Thai restaurants as the bare no resemblance to what might encounter in Thailand. However, once again the chef at Thai Bualuang has come up with a winner. This is a clear seafood broth with mixed seafood and chilli. The effect is hot and slightly sour but it is delicious! Even so this is one for the experienced Thai "foodie" as it is very spicey and in fact might work well as a paint stripper. Once again the service was immaculate, beer cold and atmosphere cosy....try the soup and enjoy something really Thai.

Heard good things about Thai Bualuang from word of mouth and they are all true. The food is outstanding, had a really nice massaman curry, green curry, king prawn tamarind, jasmine rice, pad Thai with chicken and for starters the platter. The staff are excellent, very attentive and helpful. We were in booth which was nice and comfortable. I would go as far to say it's the best restaurant in south woodham too. You have to try. Why its 69 on TripAdvisor is beyond me!

My Husband and I have found a real gem. We visited this restaurant last Friday and we were so impressed, we went again on Wednesday. The food is amazing, we holiday in Thailand nearly every year now, so we have an idea of how the food should look and taste. The staff are very friendly and attentive, the restaurant itself is just like a typical Thai restaurant with the quirky bits of decor. I would consider this to be my favourite restaurant in South Woodham Ferrers.

The venue is very good great atmosphere, staff was excellent however had better Sunday roast and when it arrived had no gravy so we asked for some and it arrived. On our I’ll there was an additional charge of £1.00 for the extra gravy. It made us smile. We will not go back for a Sunday roast but will for other foods they serve.

Beautiful food and lovely staff. My only two concerns were that, firstly, we were initially shown to a table for two positioned so we were facing the wall with very little room between potted plants and my chair. Not very feng shui! Secondly, my partner and I would have liked ONE glass of wine with our meal, but only two/three choices were offered by the glass on the drinks menu with 90% of the wine list being by the bottle, not ideal when we are driving, so we ended up having Coca Cola instead. I think this is a restaurant aimed at a group clientele rather than couples (hence selling bottles of wine), so we will go elsewhere next time.

This is my fourth visit to the restaurant. As usual all the food was good, minus the black sesame ice cream which was refrozen thanks to the big ice crystals in it. The service left much to be desired. After starters and mains, we ordered hot drinks and desserts. After 10 minutes the hot drinks arrived. 15 minutes later one dessert came. Another 15 minutes later two more desserts arrived, exactly the same type than the first dessert. Keep in mind that the restaurant was close to empty. Sure enough, when we asked for the bill the waitress was there within 30 seconds with the machine. Not impressed.

The food is really good but the portions get worse and worse every time. Seriously just spent £65 odd and you have to skimp on the rice? Sort it out
