Taste of Raj in Rochford

This used to be my regular Indian to go and eat in until Covid hit and we couldn’t eat in anymore so decided to still support them and have takeaways, out of 6 to 7 orders they messed up every one of them, I even went down there to complain and was told they didn’t want to lose my loyal custom so they continued to mess the orders up, it wasn’t as if I ordered a lot either, only two of us eating so not loads Def time to move on to another Indian

Most food was ok but just ok. Have had many meals in restaurant which has been great but take away not so much. Lamb was so though that we couldn’t eat it. Very disappointing as same price so should be the same quality

This was my first time eating out since Covid lockdown and boy! did I choose the right place to go. As usual when I am down in Rochford I go to Raj with my partner and son and I have never been disappointed. We had a starter and main course with rice and naans but couldnt finish it all so they kindly packed up our leftovers which we took home and had the next day. Thanks guys, we hope to be back very soon.

Our meal tonight was in light of the recent government discount. We always wanted to try the place, and this was an unmissable opportunity. Customer service was very good, very attentive waiting staff. Food was of good quality, we ordered peshawari naan and was given plain naan but didn't complain as the plain was tasty enough. Onion bhaji and poppadoms were lovely also.Pasanda and korma dishes were very tasty as was desert.All in all, reasonably priced after the government discount. Good service and decent food. Would come back.

Regularly get takeaways from Raj, I am afraid no more though. Food is usually good, but fed up with things missing, things incorrect, overcharging. Last four takeaways had the above problems.

We only had a takeaway but it was outstanding. We have used Taste of Raj for many years and have always had great food and great service. I'm delighted to recommend them. I don't think we have ever had a poor meal, eat in or takeaway.

I have been to the Taste of Raj on three occasions now and have not been disappointed. The food and service is very good and my favourite dish is a curry with olives in that is quite unusual but extremely tasty. Will certainly be visiting again. Recommended.

After reading reviews we decided to walk to the restaurant for a meal and weren't disappointed Friendly staff accompanied by good food so will definitely be going back. Thanks

Tried to order a takeaway tonight, man on the phone couldn't understand us and subsequently ended up with the wrong dishes and what we had wasn't edible, rice was running in oil I couldn't even have a spoonful, the only good thing was how quick the delivery was came within 10 minutes, perhaps we were just unlucky

We left it late to go out for dinner but managed to get a table at 21:15 and the food was nice and hot as well as spicy so if you like spicy try the naga food in chef’s specials, nice staff and comfortable surroundings all is good

For such a small restaurant, the atmosphere was great and the food was even better. Staff are friendly and accomodating, and not too overpriced. Would reccommend.

Was in Rochford & had been to another India restaurant around the corner many tines which is the best buffet choice I’ve had but I like to try different ones to compare well I shouldn’t have bothered this was my first & last visit to this place walked in the waiter had headphones in his ears the place was empty & it was 4ish so was a bit surprised had the buffet the Bombay potatoes was stone cold we had to ask for the chicken tikka masala be filled up the food was pretty good but when there is more staff than customers you know something isn’t right, if this was a school report you would be disappointed won’t be going back .

We were staying at the airport hotel and one of the receptionists recommended this restaurant and we were not disappointed. We booked a table and we were glad we did as it was very busy. Really good attentive and helpful service. Food was really good apart from one of our party who had the steak and it was just horribly overdone. But the rest of the food was really very good. Great popadums and pickles with plenty for everyone. Keema naan was especially good and the lamb was fabulous. Would recommend.

As the restaurant is fairly small, the choices on the Sunday buffet are fairly limited. But that said the food was good and nice and hot in temperature Good value

What a lovely Indian restaurant in Rochford. Clean and crisply decorated, super menu, delicious food and wonderful service. We were dining early (pre-theatre) on a Saturday evening and I hadn't expected the restaurant to be so busy (given the theatre is nowhere nearby!), so I imagine booking later is a must. It doesn't have too many covers but it serves take-away too.

A good Indian in Rochford, bit on the steep side, however very tasty and quite busy. Tandoori Chicken was good. Service was fast. Best to book, as does get busy.

Visited this restaurant with my wife and son and two grandchildren. We dined early so were the first ones in. Greeted on arrival and our coats taken by staff who were very polite. The restaurant is really cosy. Menu choice is excellent and a good variety of Indian curries. I cook my own curries at home preparing all my base sauces so think I know a bit about curries. Good range of six relishes dishes for the poppadoms to start. The crries were well presented and the rice varieties were good and tasty. The staff catered well for the grandchildren and they did very well to finish...almost. If you find a curry a bit hot , my wife usually does!!!!, ask for a Mango Lassi...Mango and yoghurt...cools the palate. This was a really good meal. The staff always on hand to top up the drinks. There were five in our party and we had quite a few drinks and it worked out at £20 per head. That’s not bad at all. Bonus complimentary brandy or Baileys. Although Monday there were a few customers in when we left. Oh...lovely garlic bread as well.

I agree with previous reviewers - absolutely lovely food and service IF eaten in. This is one of a few takeaways we’ve had and they’ve all been - well ...under par. The food seems completely different in quality and taste, very disappointing - shame.

Booked for my birthday having been here about 3 months ago whilst my son was at a party. Specifically booked as separate area from main tables as ideal for him as he has autism. Rang and booked table in advance specifying where we wanted to sit.

We visited last night to catch up with some friends before Christmas. Lovely time, the food as always was good, we all enjoyed a tasty well cooked meal served with a smile. It's only a small restaurant but it's the best Indian food in Rochford by a long way. Great value for money too.

Every year we go to the Raj for our curry and beer night and are never disappointed,the food is good and plentiful and we always have a good time.The restaurant is only small and can sometimes be a bit crowded but the staff are friendly and efficient.The menu is extensive and there is something for all tastes.

We ordered food for delivery .2 hours later no delivery. We called them .they never answer We drived to the shop .they did not even start cooking it . They ruined our Saturday dinner

I was introduced to this lovely little place by my brother in law. The food is very good and the service is second to none. They will always aim to please with asking for dishes,. You wont be disappointed and you will go back again. Parking is on the street but the square is available just around the corner.

Although food was delicious, we felt that from the moment we entered the restaurant we were rushed, While waiting for the remainder of the party to arrive we were immediately bombarded with a request for our drinks order. We asked for a delay until the remainder of our party had arrived.

After testing all "decent" restaurant in Rochford, my opinion is that Taste of Raj is the best one Good service Fast Tasty Food Not extraodinary but definitely a place to visit if you stay in the area and like Indian cooking

Had a family takeaway delivered one midweek evening in May this year. Of the six main course dishes I ordered, four were so extremely salty that it was like eating a spoonful of raw salt. The four dishes were completely inedible and went straight in the bin. Only the rice, naans and two mains were ok. I phoned the restaurant to complain, thinking they might deliver free replacements, but instead all they offered was an apology and a discount on my next takeaway which is ridiculous and a complete cop out because I will never eat food from this restaurant again. A very unpleasant experience.

Decided to try a curry house closer to home for a change, food was bland, no flavour what so ever. The chicken madras had a layer of oil over the top, chicken was chewy and the korma looked a grey yellow. Had to call up because they forgot the naan bread as well. Wont be using again.

Lovely clean restuarant, dishes were gorgeous and staff very friendly and attentive. I have been coming here for years and will continue to.

I know what you're thinking, yeah yeah, Honestly, try it, Ask for Anan and Family, been in Rochford for 19 years, their dishes are consistant, the chicken is not this rubberized thing that has been marinading for 3 days in some bucket, this is succulent, juicy and freshly cooked. The Madras I warn you is on the fiery side, the Naan's are to die for, and the phone doesnt stop ringing OFF the hook for the duration of your stay. Which cant be a bad thing. I eat frequently here and every experience has been a delightful one, so much so, we have 2 other Indians in Rochford, which I havent even tried yet, but why would I, if the Taste of Raj ticks all the boxes. Cant miss it, its infront of the Grey Goose pubs.

We have been going to the raj for a few years now and the quality of the food is above and beyond any other restaurant in the area, their vegetable dishes are second to none and there is no drop in the quality when you have a takeaway but you may have to wait quite a while on weekends as it does get busy .

Every year a few friends visit this restaurant, after meeting up at the Beer Festival in Rockford. A very friendly amendable place. It was very late and most of the restaurants were closed, as it was 23:00. This place were preparing to close. They welcomed us and we were served, very good food. We were not rushed and they even ordered us taxis. The food is nicely spiced, good portions and all the accompaniments. The pricing is very reasonable and the service is good. We even got their Christmas Calendars to take away. The menu is very extensive, with plenty of variety for everyone. Every year, this place is consistent and delivers, good food and service.

Superb food and service, every single time. Cosy and welcoming. Excellent takeaways. No need to go anywhere else for great Indian food.

Very welcoming & nothing is to much trouble here.Food is always cooked to a very high standard & the menu offers a very wide range of Indian specials.I have tried all the other indian restaurants in Rochford but always go back for good quality & value.

I went here with my family, I have two young children and this was a fantastic place to take them. The staff spoke to my children and made sure they was safe when bringing out food. Service was on top and food was really fantastic. Over all I would recommend you to try this place as a restaurant.

We had always enjoyed this restaurant but a takeaway this week proved to be very disappointing! My dish - chicken rogan - was so full of salt that it was barely edible. My daughter's prawn shashlik was so highly coloured with red food dye that it could have glowed in the dark. Other dishes just didn't look inviting. Having invited our daughter and son in law round for a takeaway, my husband said he felt embarrassed at the standard of the food we served them. A new chef maybe? But certainly not up to previous standards.

Ash is brilliant and very helpful/ caring. Good food and delivery is pretty quick. Restraunt is on the small side but very cosy.

We do a curry club and each month pick a new Indian restaurant to eat at, last month it was here.Although we have been to many over the years I think this placed topped quite highly for me, it was a little priceyer than some Indian Restaurants but the food was excellent as was the service, although its always been there (opposite the Grey Goose) I had never been here before. I would highly recommend it and we will be going here again.

Whilst staying in rochford my partner and myself were looking for somewhere for an evening meal. We found 'a taste of raj'and decided to try. All I can say is I'm glad we did, the service was second to none and the food was great. Great portion sizes and the best curry I've ever had. Will recommend to anyone ! Made for a great romantic meal ! I mean all this for just £35 ( and poppadoms and chutneys too)

My partner had read that this was the best of four Indian restaurants in Rochford. Perhaps one should go to Southend itself then.It was a Monday night but we were the only people in a restaurant which apparently does not have access to an interior designer - although it did have some fascinating lights. Starters were quite enormous and main courses very ordinary. There was steady takeaway business. There was nothing actually wrong with any of the food but it was quite unremarkable compared to the offerings of many Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants around the country.If this is, indeed, the best in Rochford, one should approach the others with low expectations.

Visiting Rochford we were taken here by family, it was a very enjoyable evening, it was busy but the service and meal was excellent, we would certainly return here when in the area again

Myself and my neighbours always order our Indian takeaways from here, it's the best curry in Rochford by a long way. the lamb shank is especially good. I'm going for a sit down meal in there in 2 weeks, and this makes me excited.

Went here on a Saturday night without having previously booked and were easily accommodated. Menu covers Indian, Thai and English dishes. We went for the Indian menu and the meal was very good, all freshly cooked and very tasty. Will definitely return again.

Went here for Sunday lunch which was a buffet. The food was very good. As it was a buffet the menu was a bit limited but we enjoyed the food and the service was good. We intend to visit again when we can choose from the main menu

Really great food and service. Very happy to suggest things and do dishes to suit dietary requirements. Treated like regular customers, which is not always the case with Indian restaurants.

Super food at a reasonable price, pleasant staff and a few varieties of lager available both on draught and in bottles. A decent selection of house specialities can be explored and there is also a wine selection. All that you can ask for when seeking out a curry !

Went to the restaurant last night. We both had Naja chicken and Naja prawn. We both thought this was the tastiest curry we had had for a long time. Extra were mushroom rice nan bread, sag aloo, mushroom and onion bhaji. Trouble started the following morning after my third trip to the little boys room. Perhaps the tasty food was not as good as I thought. Contacted my friend who was with me last night and he had had the same problems.Service was good and fast. The restaurant is very small and compacted. Must make a booking on Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights.

I was visiting Rochford early this July from the US, and came across this restaurant online when looking for a local dinner spot . Noting the good reviews, I decided to try it out and ended up greatly enjoying the experience! Besides the great food (perfect level of spice) and a good price, I had an amazingly friendly server who went out of his way not only to provide great service, but give me some excellent sightseeing and travel advice for my time in England. I am not sure when I will be in Rochford next, but when I am I will be sure to stop by again! Definitely recommended!

New to trip advisor and had to write a review. This place was lovely. Food was fantastic, large portions, very accomdating, friendly with kids especially when mine were asking loads of questions! Staff were great. Will come again. Happy with the price.

Out for the night with my wife and yet again we had a brilliant meal. Must go there at least once a month and are never disappointed by the food or the service.

We went here for the Sunday Buffet and was really impressed with the food and the staff, the buffet was a good size and contained all the usual indian staples, the food was nice and hot and there was plenty of it, the cost of £6.96 for an adult was good, as you really can eat as much as you want, the drinks were reasonably priced, located in the quiet town of Rochford, if your in the area its a real gem!

As well as living here, I used to have an office full of IT geeks in Rochford. ie, that's a lot of curry consumed :)We have tried every place in Rochford, some numerous times, but nothing compares to the Raj.More than happy to make it painfully hot if that's you're thing, or prepared to try something new (one of my guys used to order a Korma Vindaloo Hot, actually its awesome).We never go anywhere else now. The Raj always delivers :)

It's been roughly a year since I last enjoyed a meal at the Taste of Raj - how time flies - so it was definitely time to arrange another visit to this restaurant. The Raj was around two-thirds full on our arrival and our party of six was welcomed and shown to our reserved table. It wasn't too long before poppadums and drinks were ordered, and we were allowed a good amount of time to make our choices from the well laid-out menu. The 'popps' were fine and were accompanied by five condiments. The mint sauce was excellent - slightly thicker compared to others I've tried elsewhere. The lime pickle was also top-notch and I instantly noticed a reduction in saltiness - again, compared to others - which allow the taste of the citrus to easily come through. There was also onion salad and mango chutney but I was slightly disappointed with the red sauce, finding it a bit too sweet for my liking and I wonder if the recipe has been altered slightly since my last visit? Either that or my taste-buds have changed....Moving on to the mains, we ordered various chicken and salmon dishes and for sides we chose different rice dishes, a naan bread, onion bhajis, mushroom bhaji, sag paneer (spinach and cheese) and a portion of bombay potato.I thoroughly enjoyed my salmon dishes during my reviewed trips from 2013 and I kept to a salmon 'theme' for this visit by opting for the salmon tikka, which came with a salad and mint sauce. I added garlic rice and I also helped myself small amounts of some of the side dishes we'd chosen. The fish was cooked to perfection - a wonderful tasty dish and the garlic rice accompanied it superbly. All the sides I tried were excellent, especially the sag paneer. Although there were two of us enjoying the fish mains, the chicken diners - notably the ones who'd ordered the rogan and the methi - stated that their meals weren't quite as satisfying as on previous visits. They thought that there was something lacking in the flavour / spice department. Perhaps there has been a change in personnel in the kitchen? That said, I couldn't fault the salmon - the Raj has never let me down when serving this.After enjoying the obligatory end-of-meal chocolates which came with the bill, it was time to bid farewell to what was now a full Taste of Raj. The service was friendly and efficient and you certainly don't feel that you're being rushed - even during the hectic periods.Without question, booking in advance is a must - particularly for Fridays and Saturdays and especially for groups or larger parties - and I would suggest that booking is absolutely vital during beer festival week, held in Rochford each November. The red sauce may have not been up-to-scratch (in my humble opinion) and the chicken diners were slightly disappointed with their mains but for me the Taste of Raj has definitely gotten those salmon dishes down to a fine art. Well done the Raj on that score and I for one will be back...

Nice atmosphere, most of the dishes tried were good enough to not disappoint frequent Indian restaurant patrons. Staff helpful and courteous. The real deal it seems, in Rochford!

Good service but tables close together. Many dishes have lots of onions. Friendly staff and keen to help. We have been many times but found that our meal was spoilt by other tables' personal conversations. Air-conditioned and clean.

We ate here and ordered the non-vegetarian thali for me and the prawn puri and a chicken balti for hubby. Mine was very good with succulent tandoori chicken, and small portions of sheek kebab, lamb bhuna, chicken tikka masala sag bhaji and mixed raita served with nan and pilau rice. Hubby enjoyed his too. Both were full of flavour and a good price - with a glass of wine it came to about 34 pounds. I would have liked them to display their hygiene rating in the front window of the restaurant as it wasn't there and I didn't like to ask.

We've only had takeaways from this restaurant, but they've been delivered on time and have been delicious. The food at some Indian restaurants is sometimes too mild and bland, but from the Raj its always been spicy and as described on the menu.Delicious!

This is a typical Indian restaurant quite small but where it stands out above the rest is with very good quality and attentive staffWe have had both take always and eaten in the restaurant several times and always enjoyed the experience When it comes to cost it is great value certainly worth a visit

We went here with our daughters family for the Sunday buffet. Although we booked, at 14.00 we were the only people in. It is a small restaurant but the staff are really helpful and although the buffet is very inexpensive and maybe not as extensive as some others it was really good and tasty. We all enjoyed it and for 4 adults and 2 children with drinks and deserts the bill was just over £70Would go again

Went here on a staff outing for someones birthday.It was very busy and a good atmosphere.Food was excellent-good variety and not just ten different names in the same sauce that you tend to get in so many indian restaurants.All 20 of us enjoyed the food and we all agreed we will go back to Taste of Raj again

I've been going to the Raj for many many years, and I can honestly say I've never been served a bad meal.Sure, I've certainly had better food in other restaurants, and it's certainly not got the wow factor when you walk in.But.... the food is *always* of a high standard, the staff are friendly and attentive, and it's great value - what more can you ask for?

I have had several take always from here in the past and must confess, I was disappointed the last time but did not leave a review here. however, this evening's food was very poor. I spent £45 for 2 starters, 3 mains, 2 rice dishes, one side and some bread. My Sheek Kebab was stone cold and most of the other dishes needed a minute or two in the microwave. Had I wanted a microwave dinner I would have bought one at the supermarket. We all chose a chicken tikka dish and they were all very bland. The rice was fine but the bread stodgy and greasy. If I had been eating in the restaurant I would have have rejected the food. Sorry Raj, this simply isn't good quality and I cannot recommend anyone to use this less than average establishment.

Lets me tell you this Indian restaurant is first class from the minute you walk in.Well done! From the moment you walk in, friendly and can not do enough for you. Staff are knowledgable about their food and friendly without being obtrusive. Atmosphere is always welcoming. Menu contains some unusual surprises as well as those favorite dishes we all know and love.

My family have eaten here at least once a month for the past 5 years plus. We are always impressed by the food and service and highly recommend it!

Our son and daughter back from uni so thought we would take them to the Taste of Raj, as we had such a lovely time here last time. We weren't disappointed and once again the food was really lovely. For a change I tried something different from chicken madras and opted for the Chicken Karahi which is medium spiced. I was really pleased with my choice because it was really yummy. The service was just as brilliant as before and we were given a seat by the window so we felt like we had our own private little spot. We were also treated to complimentary drinks at the end of the meal and given a couple of calendars. They just cannot do enough for you here and we will certainly be coming back because it is so lovely to find somewhere that provides good food and service and also has a lovely atmosphere.

A trip to the annual South-East Essex CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival, held over five days during each November in Rochford, gave me the chance to make a prompt return to the Taste of Raj - a restaurant that I'd visited some six weeks previous. As with the last visit, the Raj was almost full on our arrival (which was no surprise for a Friday or a Saturday evening) and our party of ten was welcomed and shown to our table. It wasn't too long before poppadums and drinks were ordered, and we were afforded plenty of time to make our choices from the varied menu. As expected, the 'popps' were fine and the accompanying mint sauce, onion salad, mango chutney, lime pickle and red sauce were all satisfying.As a group we don't normally bother with starters, preferring instead to add some side dishes to our mains which, this time, included chicken methi, chicken tikka masala, chicken korma, chicken rogan josh and various salmon dishes. For sides we added various rice dishes, chips, a couple of naan breads, onion bhajis, mushroom bhaji and a portion of bombay potato.I thoroughly enjoyed my salmon zalmuri in October 2013, so this time I chose another salmon dish - the biran - which is chunks of fish fried in garlic and onion and served with a refreshing salad and along with a chilli rice as a side-dish, it was all divine - all cooked to perfection and it comes highly recommended. I also helped myself to an onion bhaji and some bombay potato. Everyone enjoyed their food and, after enjoying the obligatory end-of-meal chocolates which came with the bill, it was time to bid farewell to the Taste of Raj. The restaurant was still pretty-much full as we were leaving and our now empty tables were not unoccupied for too long. Booking in advance is essential - particularly for Fridays and Saturdays and especially for groups or larger parties. I look forward to another trip to the Taste of Raj in the not too distant future....
