Tang Shian in Exeter

They use fake photos online to advertise for takeaway and it looks like the dish should have had multiple different vegetables but end up with cheap leftover potato and carrot strips (I think they’re leftover because of the taste and how soft and soaking it is).

Expensive, tastes bad, and the service attitude is bad

I’m writing this on behalf of my visually impaired niece and her friend on the experience in this restaurant.They were so upset with food and service.,they couldn’t actually eat anything.The rice was solid and cold curry was served on cold plates.Infact the food was inedible they had to leave the restaurant hungry.What started out as a lovely exciting evening,ended up as a horrible disappointment.

Waited long time after food order.lot of items on menu did not have.2 meals out of 3 came out friend waited another 20 minuites.one meal refused to pay for as was terrible.worst service worst food. Avoid.

When out the other night, I noticed the waiter was making drinks and used his hand grab ice cube directly and also tasted by himself!!! (I am really sure that is not made for himself as someone collect it later.) I feel lucky as I was not the guy drink that, but while I'm having mine, that's all I'm thinking about! Was mine also be touched or tasted by the waiter or cook before delivering to me!!! It's disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Execellent authentic Chinese food. We ordered beef with cashew, chicken fried rice, beef noodles, chicken with black bean sauce, prawn dish, and other dishes. It’s very tasty and beats London Chinese resturents. We only waited 30 mins which is normal as food cooked fresh. Please discard the negative reviews. Portions are big so maybe the can reduce the portions by 10% and reflect this on prices. We are going back next week for sure.

Absolutely amazing, incredibly fresh food and so tasty. The service was a bit slow but I'm sure it's because the food was prepared from scratch, as you could really taste is super fresh. I'll come back soon.

Restaurant was empty and still took half an hour for our first plate of food to arrive. Ordered a pint of coke came half full in a 400ml glass yet still charged us full price, 6 dishes came to £94, even though we didn’t have the rice we ordered when we left. Left me and my partner feeling sick

Visited for dinner last night. I was the only person in the restaurant so the clues were there! Slow service. I was handed a tablet and told they only had a few things available (Around 15 items). After ordering a sprite which came in a warm can the dinner arrived. Food was acceptable as I was hungry. I had to move my own plate from the starter as the server wasn't going to. This was very expensive, dreadful service and very average food. I should have read previous reviews. I wouldn't visit again however hungry I was.

Absolutely disgusting , frozen food which the waitress admitted to. Paid for drinks and walked out . Never have been to such a terrible Chinese. Avoid

This is a fantastic Chinese restaurant in Exeter and deserves to do very well. Great location. Some reviews seem unfair - though the positive ones reflect the meal I had this evening as a fan of Sichuan food. Service was extremely friendly and efficient and the food was delicious. I asked to order from the authentic Chinese menu and had La Zi Ji (Sichuan Mala Chicken, 辣子鸡) and some soup. Please do ask for the alternate menu if you want to experience some real Chinese food as the more people order it, the higher profile it will have in the restaurant and this could be the best Chinese in Exeter. 🥢

Was hard work just to order and menu was on a tablet ,took 15 mins trying to order and just trying to get glass of water was difficult, ended up cancelling and leaving as I was dreading the food after such hard work trying to order, place looked very run down and messy, I certainly won’t be going back

Food was not well cooked, but rather expensive. A bowl of potatoes costs10 pounds, and a small piece of skewed lamb cost 2.5 pounds, but none of them taste fresh. The pork was a little smelly. There was no menu, and I had to look at their phone to order. When I went to the counter to pay, the waiter was playing computer games, who does not bother to stop, but ask others to serve me. Will not go again.

Have always had brilliant food here. The staff have always been friendly and helpful Portion size good. Would recommend. Definitely higher than the 3.6 rating.👌

I can honestly say this was not only the worst chinese meal I have ever had out, but the worst meal of any kind I have had out. This also goes for my 3 friends who were with me. I should have known better really sitting in a freezing cold restraunt with only 2 other customers at 8.30 on a Friday night says it all. The 2 other customers left all there food. It was nothing short of shocking, which lead me to write a review. I,m not one for writing reviews and slagging places off but I felt I had to do it in this instance. I have given 1 star because I cant seem to be able to leave no stars.

I popped in here on a visit to Exeter, the food was good, as was the service. I would recommend going here, very good value.

We'd been to this Chinese restaurant many years ago when it was under different ownership. The place is clean and conveniently located at the bottom end of South Street with parking on the road or behind the street in the pay and display. The menu is very limited and the pricing is very strange. Special fried rice will set you back over £10. The menu claims that the chef cooks using Szechuan, Cantonese, and Shandong influences. We could find none of that. The only vegetables used were onion, chili, and cabbage. The chicken in black bean sauce was inedible. Pak Choi was unavailable. Chinese beers were also off the menu and we were offered cans of Stella instead. Our waitress was nice enough, but for £40 for two people, we left hungry and thoroughly disappointed.

Visited for the first time last after a very strong recommendation from friends who had visited a few days before. I was very impressed! The restaurant was clean and spacious, we were seated straight away. The menu offered a good selection of mains, sides and appetisers/starters with indications for how hot/spicy the dishes would be. We ordered Cumin Beef, Tofu with Meat and Double Cooked Pork Belly with side dishes of Steamed Rice and Egg Fried Rice. Our order was taken promptly and there was only a small waiting time before it came to the table. Portion sizes were great and each of the dishes we had were amazing! All were served piping hot and the flavours/spices were outstanding. As a small caution - there were chillies in all the dishes and being a bit of a wuss when it comes to spicy food, I did find the heat to be a little outside of my usual comfort zone but I was happily surprised to find that I really enjoyed it. Our waitress was absolutely lovely, extremely polite and regularly checked with us to see if we were happy with our order and to ask if we needed any more drinks. Prices were reasonable for the quality and size of the dishes. As a few of the other reviews have mentioned, it's surprising to see somewhere so empty on a Friday night and there do appear to have been some previous issues with ingredient shortages and supply disruption. As this is a situation currently affecting a lot of businesses, I would hopefully assume that any of the above problems will be resolved in the near future. In the meantime, I would absolutely recommend Tang Shian for the seated restaurant experience. Given the quality and deliciousness of the food I ate last night, I will definitely be trying their take away service and really hope that more people give them a try. As last note - the dishes are more along the lines of authentic Chinese cuisine rather than westernised take away. There are a lot of bold flavours and rich dishes that might not go down so well with very young children or those who want chips with curry sauce.

We were visiting Exeter with friends and wanted to eat Chinese, and we weren't disappointed! The menu isn't the usual Chinese type, which is often a good clue, that the food should be a bit different. We tried lots of different courses off the menu and all was eaten, very very tasty. The only down side was that they had no coffee, but the food and service made up for all that, we will definitely be visiting again, oone a the best Chinese restaurants we have been to!

Service not good. No attention to detail. Food too English adapted and they are no authentic. The sushi and steak restaurant I few minutes walk is 1000 time better.

We had a lovely evening here. We had great service from the staff.The restaurants in town were very crowded so we were happy to find somewhere a little quieter. It was a reduced menu which I assume is due to the pandemic but we enjoyed everything we ordered.

From the outside it looks ok. Inside is fairly large, and yet, on a Friday night empty! There was a very limited menu and the only other people in there left because of this. The servers have obviously had absolutely no training whatsoever, however, the food actually wasn’t bad. If more of an effort was made, then this could be a good place.

We visited last night after reading it was rated best Chinese in Exeter. Arrived about 7pm staff did not seem to know menu, drinks on menu not available, asked about a couple of dishes as had grandson with us, waitress told us chicken satay starter had separate dip, it arrived swimming in a very runny version of a satay sauce and sent back particularly after trying a skewer where chicken had a strange texture and not sure cooked through. Crispy duck OK but arrived with no spoons for hoi sin sauce. Mains again very disappointing for Grandson had what on menu was slight spice crispy chicken that was more like medium heat. Beef in oyster sauce was incredibly salty and beef mostly inedible Not at all a good experience and I guess it being empty should have been a warning

Very poor. After a long drive knowing that the restaurant closed at 10pm on Sunday, arrived at 8.30pm to be told that they had to close as they had completely sold out of food.. Anyway, when we walked back past at 10.30pm, food obviously was back in stock as all the staff were sat around a hotpot..

The food wasn’t nice and tasty at all. Had chow neon and Egg fried rice. To think I was very hungry , I couldn’t even eat the food. I would say this is the worst Chinese food I have ever had

Lovely sweet & sour Chicken and their egg fried rice is nice- the cutlery isn't always looking clean & tidy, the guest toilets are not so clean either and it does get quite cold in there, especially if you sit by the window - so maybe this is something they can work on!?? Otherwise it's a lovely cuisine and reasonably priced as well.

Thought we’d go a little up market tonight for a Chinese take away as a special occasion but how disappointing the food was, greasy and extremely bland asked for some chips as an extra for my daughter they came in a take away tub soggy and full of grease .. the only good thing was how polite and nice the lady was that took our order. Would have been better getting a take away from the super market less expensive and you know what to expect .

Very empty for a Friday night, but we persevered and the food was acceptable as was the house red wine. Portions are quite generous and the battered prawns stood out. Annoyingly, there are no formulas on the menu for groups which is unusual for a Chinese restaurant, just one with lots of photos and an abridged written one which needed a wipe. A bit odd. Four a la carte dishes between three were ample.

Lovely food, but it wasn’t what we ordered. Inside is ok, friendly service, but they need a pad to write down the orders. You won’t go hungry.

Had to throw most of the food away. Don’t know if the ‘chicken’ was cooked, but it was horrible and in a cold sauce with mushy vegetables. Tofu was hard, up tasty and inedible as were the spring rolls which I reckon had been microwaved several times. I felt queasy just thinking about it this morning.

Had the 3 dishes for £12 menu. Food came out on plates, rather than on serving dishes. Food was good though.

The food was edible but not enjoyable. The Singapore chow mein tasted like it had just had curry powder thrown in to spice it up and the ham had the texture and appearance of tinned spam. The only up side to this establishment is that the staff seem nice.

Mi esposa y yo decidimos salir para una cena china y decidimos comer en el Tang Shian. Para ser sincero, no habíamos leído ninguna de las revisiones que se habían escrito recientemente. El lugar era agradable y el personal era servicial. No fueron los más rápidos, pero no tuvimos que esperar demasiado tiempo para nuestra comida, fue muy buena. Las raciones eran decentes y, aunque me pareció un poco caro, la cantidad de comida probablemente compensa el precio. Obviamente, es uno de esos lugares donde tienes que tener suerte en la noche con respecto al servicio y la comida.

This was the most bland Chinese meal I have ever eaten. When ordering food there was no sesame prawn toast or pak choi available. Service was ok, but the meal was a truly underwhelming experience ☹️

By far the worst Chinese I've ever been to. My wife and I went here on June 6th 2019. We had the salt and chilli ribs, and duck role for starters. The center of both the ribs and the duck roles were cold and the ribs especially were very bland. For the mains we ordered the chef special tangshian with udon noodle. The first chef special that came out was missing the squid and it was cold. I sent it back and she came back and told me the chef would make a new one. When that arrived it too was cold, swimming in oil and still cold in the centre of the meats. After 2 bites I couldn't eat any more. Rather than sending it back a second time I mearly asked for the check. The waitress asked if everything was ok. So I began to explain the food was bland and cold l, she stopped me and asked if I could explain to the manager/chef, of which i agreed. She went into the back to the kitchen to get him, I could hear that a few words were exchanged between him and the waitress but in the end he refused to even come out. Just goes to show how interested they are in ensuring a returning customer base. For the cost of the dishes it was a complete RIP off. If you want to avoid disappointment, go else where

It started well with the two starters that were ordered and enjoyed by myself and partner, however our mains were very disappointing 3 ingredients were missing from what was listed on my partners seafood chow Mein,and was served luke warm, my main dish of chilli chicken had more dried chilli's than chicken (there was plenty of chicken!).. Egg fried rice looked more like boiled rice.. Overall very disappointed for the price..my partners main was deducted from the bill.. I would give 1 star but service was good

The restaurant obviously popular with Chinese people, as I was placed next to a couple watching loud Chinese food. I was eating alone, and ordered soup and a main course. The main course arrived, and I reminded the waitress that I had ordered a starter. She advised me it was on it's way. when it arrived, my main was left cooling on the table. The soup was tepid, and main course poor. I was then advised that they were not taking cards. Never, never again.

We arrived to a warm welcome from a well spoken young man; only to be left waiting for over 15 minutes to order drinks having tried to call over the slow, uninterested waitress. This establishment is advertised as vegetarian friendly but only 2 main courses (a few sides are available) do not contain meat. Certainly, we were told that we could alter some of their dishes, Sweet and Sour pork for example - but substitute the pork for veg. Not the most inspiring or innovative alternative given the above-average prices. The food was tasty but one of our dishes was freezing cold and two of our party (including an 89 year old lady) had to wait around 10 minutes to receive her main after I received mine. (There were only 6 of us, hardly a large party!)

This was a very disappointing visit to this restaurant. Terrible food. We ordered our food. Then to be told they hadn't got it.

Good very hit and miss with the temperature, chicken satay skewers were tough as old boots and then told that my main dish wasn't available. Restaurant was extremely cold even though they had heaters it wasn't enough to heat the area we were sat in.

We recently visited for a family meal. On arrival, the restaurant was freezing cold and remained chilly throughout the evening. The staff were pleasant enough, but got our order incorrect. The food all came out at different times, and when we the remaining food was bought out (after asking) it was the wrong item and had clearly been microwaved. At the point, it we just had to roll with it. I wish we didn't, most of the party were ill after eating here except the one person who didn't eat their meal as it wasn't nice. Overpriced for what you get (and end up having!). Unfortunately, have to recommend avoiding.

This restaurant caught my eye because the menu on display outside offered a variety of vegetarian options. For me, that is a bonus as I had so much to choose from. Hence the decision to have a Chinese meal for the first time in a long while. The restaurant itself is modern and very elegant and the lady who served us was extremely pleasant and helpful. The menu that we were shown inside was different and did not make it so clear that vegetarians were so well catered for. When I pointed this out, I was told that they would cater for vegetarians. I did point out that had I seen the menu that I was shown inside I would not have gone in for a meal. Personally I like to see clearly that that non meat eaters are catered for rather than having to ask.

Entered at 2.30pm as they were closing. We were 7 people on holiday and hungry. It was Boxing day and the chef said yes to cook us dinner. The food was spectacular compared to all the rubbish we'd previously had and the service was a breath of fresh air. 100% brilliant.

Tuesday night it was very quiet only 7 people dining. For a so called master chef this was a poor experience. Nothing nice to say about food or service.

I was very disappointed. Long wait for food which was poor quality, overcooked and served luke warm. I could have cooked all of it better myself or stayed home and opened what ever packets they did without the inconvienience of going out for a third of the price.

Been here twice. Always No waiter in dinning area, have to go to the cashier to order and bill. Service was bad, the waiter seems understand nothing what I was saying (both in Chinese and English). Food served extremely slow during night time. Wait an hour for just 3 dishes. Ps. 4 pounds for a WATER BOILED random selected vegis. Do not recommend

It was crowded but it wasn’t full yet service was very slow and not very friendly. The food wasn’t all that tasty either. Rather disappointing and we should have paid more attention to the other folks who reviewed this place before us.

Went in to a busy Restaurant and it looked lovely. But was seated in-between uncleared tables! Understaffed with just two Unhappy waitresses, chasing around. Waited 50 minutes for our food with the main ingredient missing- Appalling! When I complained, asking for the manager, (who didn't come out and talk to me) but sent the waitress to offer a 5% discount (!!!) Will not be going there again!.

Had one hour wait between ordering and receiving the main course despite the fact there were only five other people in the restaurant. Apparently they were kept busy with takeaway orders to the detriment of the diners in the restaurant. The meal was very good and the poor staff pleasant.

We were looking forward to a Chinese meal out last Friday evening when we visited relatives in Exeter. When we arrived we were promptly shown to our table and given our menus. We ordered drinks first and when they arrived we actually were handed the corkscrew as the waitress did not know how to open a bottle of wine. Very strange we thought. There was a good selection of normal Chinese dishes. We ordered and then must have waited for at least an hour and a half for any food to arrive. There did not seem to be any people there to serve us and a lot of customers were getting fed up at waiting for so long. When the food did finally arrive we were pleased with the starters. Peking duck which you can’t really go wrong on and some Satay meat skewers. Our mains dishes however were not up to standard - rubbery meat and too much batter - and though we made the best of the evening this restaurant did not impress us.

We've been coming here (under different ownerships) for 10 years and it's always been fantastic food. But in recent months they have definitely been having chef problems. We got a takeaway a couple of months ago on a week night. The food was appalling - soggy prawn toast, crispy squid looked like it had been fried three times or in very old oil, sauces on the food were a weird consistency. We vowed not to go back, but last night thought we'd give them another try. We thought as it's a Saturday night the best chef would be on and the food would be fresh. Unfortunately not. The ribs were tough, prawn toast was rubbery, there was no sauce with the sweet and sour, even the rice was not as good as it has been in the past. Furthermore, we were told the food would be 35 minutes but when we got there the girl on the counter giggled and said it would be another 20 minutes as they were busy (there was one table of 4 in the restaurant). Very disappointing and we will be waiting for the next change in ownership before we try it again.

If you like a restaurant with bad service, sad staff (only two of them for busy restaurant), and an hours waiting time - this is the place for you! Only 5% off when I complained. Under staffed and painfully slow service, manager didn’t come out to talk to us about our complaints! Not happy and will never go there again!!

On the whole the meal was good quality. Hot and the delivery was quick. Unfortunately I ordered the seafood Udon. 2 King Prawns and 3 pieces of Squid was a little disappointing!

Came in on a fairly empty Saturday night (there were 3 other groups there) and ended up waiting 45 mins for food after we ordered. Half of it came out lukewarm and on dirty plates, and then we had to wait another 10 mins for the rice and noodles but they forgot the noodles! At this point all the food was cold! We were ignored for the entirety of our time there and it was an unpleasant setting. The chopsticks had bite marks in them and weren't clean, and the plates were dirty and marked. Other customers were complaining about the service and food the duration we were there also. Would not recommend to anyone, will be glad to never go back.

Soup had few vegetables and cooked in tasteless water, main course came in cold bowls and plates and the food was cold. Pointing this out no apology and as if it was our faul. Eventually came hot but my chicken was undercooked and slimy. I was told it was water chicken and used by Marks and Spencer.. Having had M & S Chinese food there was no comparison . m&S; is much better quality

Tang Shian regards itself as the best Chinese restaurant in the area and it may have a just claim. We were seated promptly and warned that we might have a bit of a wait because they were busy. With under 50% occupancy, I silently challenged their definition of busy but, in the event, service was not especially tardy. Prawn crackers were fresh. Our dishes were correctly presented although, in the style of the more authentic Chinese restaurants, these arrived in the order in which they were ready rather than as one might desire to make a coherent meal. Notably lacking in MSG, the food was very good and my gamble with the three chilli symbols for my main dish paid off as it was subtly prepared and not unnecessarily hot. We would take guests to this restaurant.

Ate here with my in laws from China and my family. We arrived about 1:40 to an almost empty restaurant after being stuck in traffic on the way. The food arrived promptly - a very interesting Basa soup dish with pickles, a tasty sweet and sour, good wonton soup, excellent sweet and sour (not made with the nearly ubiquitous gunk that the takeaways use). Chicken fried rice was a bit dry - as was a cold chicken dish.

Visited Tang the other day with some work colleagues and had high hopes as the feel and look of the place is very nice.

Excellent food. The duck and lemon chicken were much better than other takeaways in Exeter.

This was our third visit to Tang Shian - and it was as good as ever. The food is hot, well cooked and tasty and the team provide a really friendly, helpful service.

My fiancé and I Arrived at 9 pm and we were just about to be seated when we were then told that the chef had just gone home, despite it being another hour before they closed. When we went past an hour later they were all having dinner , so we were very confused.

Booked a table for four of us and was absolutely assured that it was wheelchair accessible and there were no steps. That was totally untrue and the bad start just got worse. We had a mixture of dishes including egg fried rice and not a single one was tasty or memorable. We have eaten Chinese food in many different places around the UK and this was by far the blandest. We are foodies and went on some previous reviews so cannot imagine what some peoples taste buds are like. We do not recommend.

We popped in for dinner after walking past at lunchtime and seeing it packed with Chinese students. I lived in China for a couple of years and am always searching for authentic Chinese restaurants as opposed to highly westernised dished, which is the norm. I wasn't disappointed here. The Kung Po Chicken (gongbao jiding) was spot on and all other dishes delicious. They do have a separate menu for the local Chinese population too, which they were more than happy for us to look at, but the dishes were much more along the lines of pigs trotters and frogs legs, very authentic but we stuck with the regular menu and didn't miss out. Service was impeccable and food served quickly. I would recommend to anyone looking for great, genuine Chinese food.
