Standards have dropped but price went up. Tai pan used to be the go-to Chinese dine-in experience in Liverpool. Not anymore. Standards have fallen drastically. The bao you get is hard and small - signs of frozen goods. Likewise with the siu mai - there's a detectable smell from the meat. Save your money and look elsewhere. The Tai Pan of yesteryear is no more.

Been eating at Taipan for years and food has always been of a good standard. Have to be honest though the last 3 times we've been the service has gotten progressively worse. Food brought to table in dribs and drabs by staff who have zero interest in engaging with customers or even smiling when thanked ( for every element of their service !!) Like I started the review the food was fine as always but we won't be going back due to the poor standard of customer service. A lick of paint and a new carpet wouldn't go a miss either !!

The dim sum is ready to order, steamed and fried, the fried wontons £6.6 have huge shrimps, which I haven’t seen in Hong Kong; the scallop dumplings £6.6 have large scallops, are flavorful, and heavy with shrimps; the siomai £6.4 have no fat, which I prefer , also heavy on shrimp meat; cuttlefish balls £6.4 are a bit unpalatable with the smell of cuttlefish; beef sausage £6.4 is the most ordinary of them all, although they are all ok and delicious. The sisters and brothers you greet are polite, including local white brothers and black sisters! However, I think the price is a bit expensive, but there is a Chinese Super League underground, so I kill two birds with one stone, so I took a shower and drove there to buy it for the second time! 🙇🏻♂️🙏🏻

A much loved restaurant, particularly with the local Chinese community. With this restaurant having been closed fairly recently I expected to see it refreshed but was disappointed to find the carpet is still filthy and the furnishings tired. We both ordered minced chicken and sweetcorn soup - the portion was ample but the taste was a little metallic. My main course of duck in a pineapple and ginger sauce was far from the zingy treat I was expecting- very under seasoned. My husbands sweet and sour pork was overcooked and tough whilst the sauce tasted strongly of tomato ketchup.

It was a party of more than 10 people . We ordered 10 meals. The roast meat dish was too fatty , the roast duck with not much meat but bones . The brisket beef dish was tasteless . Each paid roughly £17 and not an enjoyable meal altogether. It was nice to receive free oranges after the meal but the meal standard was disappointing.

Great Chinese where you'll find a lot of Chinese, especially on a Sunday. On busy days, like Mothering Sunday, if you're too late getting in the queue or slow, you might miss the first sitting and have to wait (you'll get a number so you don't lose your place) - smaller tables turn over more quickly

Starters tasted like it came out of a packet. Didn’t seem like they were made on site. The mains were okay. Also my friend almost swallowed plastic which was fried in with the food. When this was highlighted the staff just went “okay cool”. We were not expecting anything in return but at least acknowledge the error would have been polite. Not to mention our food took a very long time (despite having barely any customers). Most of the staff were nice however there was a lady who should not be interacting with customers. She came across quite rude- almost like she hated her job (possibly a bad day) but that shouldn’t be transferred with how she speaks to customers. Given the reviews I thought it would be a very good place to eat- maybe I went there on a bad day but definitely won’t be returning.

I remember this being the go to restaurant for family celebrations as kids. Not much has changed. Relaxed and casual, we were not out of place in jeans and hoodies on a Sunday afternoon. I think Friday and Saturday evenings would be a little more dressy. The food selection is good with plenty of choices for vegetarians. We all enjoyed our meals. My only point would be that the service seemed a little cold and rushed at times. Otherwise all good. A massive free carpark and huge supermarket below are also a bonus.

Sui Mai’s rubbery / hardly any meat on spare ribs / crispy chilli beef came with absolutely no beef just fried fat / forgotten main course and rice Service absolutely abysmal - guessing a manager ( small glasses own clothes ) so patronizing. Tired dirty chairs / carpet . Waited 45 minutes for drink and When we politely asked where they were the rude manager said they are at the bar and smirked . Won’t be going again

Was here for a Mother's day dinner, we had ribs, salt and pepper chicken , satay chicken, sweet and sour pork and a few other dishes which we shared with noodles, fried rice and chips. Everything was lovely except for one meal, we couldn't figure out what it was, it was supposed to be crispy beef, but it was inedible, we tried one piece and it was like chewing through fried rubber or something, we'd ordered 2 and the whole meals were left untouched, all of us agreed it wasn't good, sadly these were charged for although we'd said they were inedible to the waiter, £13 for each maybe, not sure, but wasted. Atmosphere nice.

Went tonight as a large party of 19 for a special birthday meal to be told we would have two separate tables, when we told them we wanted to sit together we were sat in the reception area 10 mins for the tables to be put together, very unorganised considering we had booked weeks in advance. Food came at all different times which was just put down randomly on the table, kids waited 1,30hr for a plate of chips and noodles, they were bored waiting. Food was average not restaurant quality won’t be returning and been coming since I was a kid myself. Decor needs updating been that way last 20+ years ripped chairs cheap dragons on the wall. Not even offered a slice of orange or a mint with the bill and we paid over £500 tonight don’t waste your time or money.

Wow this was an absolutely awful experience!! Not only was our food disgusting - starting with the sui mais - hard around the outside and chewy . Then the half perking duck was £32.00 ( starter ) it was so dry and flavorless ! The main course we ordered crispy chilli beef which was that crispy it almost took my teeth out - with hardly any beef in it just crispy fat ! Then they forgot my partners main course and rice absolute disaster! And to top it off the waiter - in casual clothes so obviously a manager ( small guy / glasses . He was the rudest waiter I have ever come across - laughing when we were trying to order and smirking / sharp with questions and had a really cocky presence .we had to get up and pay the bill and there was a massive ray of people trying to order takeaways / pay their bill so the rude manger was shouting at the till making remarks because we were trying to work out each others total as we were a big family . I said this could be prevented if bills were taken at the table . Honestly it was Chaos drinks came after 45 mins service was hurrendous from start to finish and food not good

Food is nice but I'm fairly sure after ordering Tsingtao beer we were given open bottles that'd been filled at the pump with San Miguel or Carlsberg. It tasted nothing like Tsingtao and was too dark. Another member of my party independently mentioned the same thing so I'm not imagining it. I didn't want to cause a scene as the restaurant was busy, but this had better not happen again or I will be kicking off about it in front of your other customers. If you don't have a beer just say so, don't give me an open bottle of something you've refilled. Such a shame as the staff are usually nice and I've never previously had issues with the food, but I don't appreciate being taken for a fool. Don't do it again, Tai Pan.

It's literally just "ok" but the food is comically expensive for what you get. £70 for two people for what was honestly pretty average food. The main thing it has going for it is the variety of Dim Sum which you can't really get anywhere else nearby, but the mains are all £13+ each without rice, tiny portions (especially meat) and average quality. Everything was just very bland apart from the duck in Plum Sauce - again completely carried by the sauce. Beef in Black Bean Sauce - again £13+ and probably 10 small pieces of beef Just get takaway from a decent chippy and save yourself £40 for exactly the same meal.

The food is very good and there is plenty of variety. Staff. Honestly, they work hard, and as with most businesses, limited to staff depending on the time you go. But not too long a wait on food. Dim Sum, small tapas style selection is good, and the main menu is traditional Western style, but they also have the Proper Chinese menu as well. It's not a dressed over the top oriental style design, It's clean and has a cosy feel. Windows all round to let plenty of light in but not too bright.

The Tai Pan officially reopened on Monday, 24 July 2023. The ambience and service is generally good, and food arrives hot, although it can be a little slower and challenging trying to attract the attention of waiting on staff during busy periods, which can be rather noisy. It is such a shame the the Sunday dim sum trolley cart service ceased post-pandemic. Perhaps this was due to hygiene reasons ? During peak times, where the cart was temporarily left unattended as waiting staff were delivering food to tables, some impatient Customers approached the cart. They lifted the lids off the dishes, leaned over to view the variety, and / or self-selected the dish they thought was most appealing, then gave the dim sum card for staff to stamp. For special occasions such as Easter, Mother’s and Father’s Days, Christmas Eve and Day, and New Year’s Eve and Day, it is recommended that you book in advance avoid disappointment and / or to save longer wait times. The ladies toilets are a little cramped, so you may have to face and lean over the toilet to close and lock the cubicle door behind you. Hopefully, all three wash basins now have adequate running water as opposed a slight trickle. Almost all would queue up to just use the middle one. The ladies and disabled toilets, and perhaps the gents although that is not a place I would access, would benefit from a decent, periodic steam clean and regular monitoring to ensure there are sufficient supplies of liquid soap and toilet paper.
