Tad Cod in Powys

There was a piece of plastic in my food! Very cheap Morrisons tomato sauce and acidic tartar sauce in sachets, v undercooked chips and cheap mushy peas. Fish was decent size but that was all. Really poor for the rip off price of £30!! AVOID and spend your money elsewhere. ,

I originate from Whitby North Yorkshire, renowned for its fish and chips and scamp around the UK, and I can honestly say that Tad Cod fish and chips are right up there as some of the best you will get anywhere in the UK, certainly here in Wales for sure. They are cooked fresh for you by order and the batter on the fish is amazing.

At £14.90 for fish and chips I'd give this place a wide berth. Although the food was nice it didn't deserve the price tag. I asked for the bill when I was having my meal as i couldn't get my head around what I had been charged and was told that they could not print a bill as they had served another customer. I was with my wife and granddaughter and should have gone to a restaurant and enjoyed a proper meal. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Fabulous fish & chip shop in Brecon town (opposite the church). Highly recommended by locals. Very busy but service was prompt. Friendly staff, especially the owner. Cod was freshly cooked and HUGE!! A rare find!

Had a lovely fish and chips sat in the heart of brecon watching the world go by....right in the centre of town was the best fish and chips ive tasted in many a good year....it was amazing not soggy and there was so much there enough for the dog too .staff lovely and friendly 5 out of 5 guys

Not bad- we were looking for somewhere to eat and decided on fish and chips, after not being impressed with the pubs or restaurants in Brecon Town centre. This was OK, but not cheap. A bit of a blast from the past in sitting in, as it was like something from the 70s/80s. Food was good but a bit pricey for what we had.

We've been to tad cod twice now since moving to the area a few months ago. 1st time wasn't great as chips wasn't cooked through enough. Thought we'd give it ago again as may of just been a bad batch and is the closest one to us. I ordered a large cod nearly £9 and this is how much actual fish there was (size comparison next to a chip!!) wasn't impressed as it was all batter!! Which is piled next to it. I'd hate to think how small a small cod would be. Very disappointed.. safe to say its nothing like back home in Devon :(

Thankfully we were allowed in with our dog on a very wet day on our visit to Brecon so we were very grateful. Out of three fish and chips ordered two were quite nice but our daughters was overcooked and very dry, £14.95 a portion to sit in,Ok and jumbo sausage with chips at £6.80 a portion. Our bill for 6 people with drinks came to an eye watering £83! For a fish and chip shop I consider to be very expensive especially when there is no toilet for you to use either! So have deducted points on this basis.

Staying at Brecon caravan & motorhome site. So cycled along the tow path into town, grabbed fish & chips. Squeezed them into bike pannier and then quickly cycled back. Great service, generous portions and very tasty.

What's happening to Tad Cod here it has new owners. Are they still trading if so what are hours of opening

I have been here a few times and never been disappointed. However today I was charged £22.40 for 2 cod & chips, which in my view were well overpriced. The cod was small and beautifully cooked, the chips were undercooked and hard. It was as if they were cooked frozen chips cooked in warm fat, they were unedible. Won't be going back at this price.

Visiting family last weekend. We decided to go for some fish and chips. We ate in the restaurant side. However it was very very busy but they quickly attended to us, and provided enough seating in one area (moving tables and chairs) They also provided us with high chairs for the little ones. When we ordered our food we're were told there may be a slight wait of 10 mins as it is all cooked fresh, and there were a few people in front of us. Omg I've never tasted chippy dinner like it. Thank you 😊 💓 Well worth every penny 👌

£28 for the worst fish, chips and tea we had ever tasted,, we were having a day out in Brecon and after many lovely meals in this restaurant with the previous owners decided to try it again, but oh dear what a disappointment. dirty chairs and a very long wait which resulted in a plate of almost inedible food, we ate it because we had a long appointment soon after and knew we would not be eating for some time. anyway we will be wiser next time

The food was fine and cooked fresh. Not sure the price of £8.50 for a large cod is reasonable but the size of the cod was not very large compared to many others I have had from others. Overall a bit pricey for my liking...

Went at get some chip for tea, system in place due to covid not really clear. But order taken and then asked to wait outside, pleased it was not raining. After about 20mins my number was called. Walked back to my accommodation and unwrapped my bag of disappointment. . Sausage was ok but the chips were undercooked,pale and mashed together , offered one to my dog who turn her nose up. On a positive the sausage was great

Went to Tad Cod today after having chips previously in Brecon Fish Bar. That place was disgusting.The food was fresh and tasty. I had pie and chips and my husband had Irish curry sauce and chips. The pie was delish with a good filling. The curry sauce was a good consistency. Not too thick or too runny. Chips lovely. Even the vinegar was spot on!We will definitely go back....well done Tad Cod!

Myself and my wife went for a trip out to Brecon for the day as the restrictions have now been lifted. As we walked through the town we saw quiet a few people waiting out side a shop. As we got nearer we realised it was TAD COD a fish & chip shop. We spoke to a lovely couple who were waiting outside and they said it was the best fish & chip shop in Brecon ( they travel from a town called Risca which is a good hour away just for the fish & chips) you have to wait about 10 minutes for your food as they cook everything fresh, which we thought was good as you never know how long fish has been sat in those warmers for sometimes. The couple recommended that we ordered while we were there so we could just collect it when we wanted. So we went and order and asked if we could come back in about 1 hour. The very friendly lady behind the counter who we spoke to apologised and said she had quite a lot of orders for 6, would it be possible if we came back at about 6:15 which we were happy to oblige as we could see how busy they were. So I ordered a large cod & chips and my wife went for the posh cod finger butty.On returning we went in to let them know we were back and we were told our order was ready (At which we were surprised as it was still busy outside). We went and sat on a bench just over the road from TAD COD and OH MY GOD we can see why it’s the best fish & chip shop In town. The fish was cooked to perfection the fish just crumbled as we ate it and the batter was the best I have ever tasted.My wife’s butty was amazing too we didn’t realise the tartare sauce was home made until we saw it in my wife’s butty so I popped back over and bought some to have with my fish ( it was to die for). What can I say about the chips. Well just exquisite, crispy on the outside and lovely and soft in the middle, by far the best I have had in a while or even ever. Thank you TAD COD for helping us have a great day in Brecon. We will definitely be back.

Went to Tad Cod on Friday, first time since lock down and the restrictions lifted. OMG we wasn’t disappointed it was absolutely delicious, the Cod was cooked to perfection with the most amazing batter, we had as always their homemade tartar sauce and mushy peas, they should win awards for it!! My daughter had the Cod fingers and she ate every single one, in fact she wanted to go back for more! But the queues were quite big outside their shop and I can perfectly understand why, it is the BEST PLACE TO GET FISH AND CHIPS. Thank you Tad Cod we will see you again soon.

After 4 months of shielding and now being able to travel outside of the 5 mile rule, my husband and I decided to travel from Swansea to pay our favourite fish and chip shop a visit.I can’t even begin to tell you how much we have been looking forward to this day !We are regulars and travel all the way from Swansea as it’s such a delicious treat.We phoned through our order which was going to take ten minutes to cook, we ordered our favourite cod fingers and chips. When we arrived they weren’t ready so waited in the car as I’m still having to shield, they took and extra ten minutes which was done because they are usually worth the wait.We drove to besides the canal where we sat and tucked into our meal.When we opened the bags the chips looked dark and crispy and tasted terrible. They were very overcooked to start with and the cod fingers were also overcooked. The batter was so crunchy and the fish inside overcooked too.We are as much of the fish as we could but ended up leaving the chips.. they were barely edible ! If it wasn’t for the fact we have to limit contact with anyone I would have gone back and complained.We have previously left such glowing reviews and know the standard that Tad Cod are capable of. They never failed to disappoint but this time they were dreadful and I have to say it’s such a shame. We couldn’t even share it with our toddler as it was all too crunchy for her.Such a wasted trip and left feeling extremely disappointed and won’t be returning unfortunately.There were people waiting outside and I can only suggest that they were inundated with orders but at the cost of the quality of the food and as a result will now have lost a customer.

My children picked up a fish supper for Friday night The chips were saturated in oil and quite dark very mushy texture not appetising ,the fish cake was of poor quality very flat and a dense texture ,threw it in the bin ,and the fish we had assuming it was cod was swimming in grease ,my daughter had three pieces of chicken (chicken tenders)they were fine but cost £3.50 for 3 tiny pieces the equivalent of mc Donald’s chicken nugget size ,we have eaten here a few times when they opened but clearly it has gone down hill fast ,a shame as brecon is quite small and we like to support local businesses

My wife purchased fish and chips for me and her father one Saturday in early December, the resulting take away was overcooked, saturated in grease and inedible. She paid £13 for a meal that went straight to the bin. She described the service as 'surly' , and added that a male staff member of staff went out for a cigarette mid way through cooking! The early optimism of August has evaporated and Brecon is back to its hit and miss take away fare

Tad Cod have a very good reputation in the area so my partner and I had to check it out! We definitely will be back!! It was faultless... generously sized freshly cooked cod and crispy chips. It was very tasty! Staff we lovely and friendly and our dogs were warmly welcomed in the restaurant and even given dog biscuits, this was a nice touch. The restaurant was very clean and is open in the evenings making it a perfect place for dinner. Looking forward to our next visit.

Takeaway, large cod & large chips. Cod was cooked fresh & was wonderful. Chips were excellent and very plentiful. £7.30 in total. Excellent food, hot fresh & very good value.

Called here on a visit to brecon. Only went in because we couldn't find anywhere else and it was dog friendly.

Usually chippy menu we had ours to eat out in the town square but you can sit in. Food was nice and would call again.

During a stay in Brecon we had food from Tad Cod which was 3 bags of chips, 2 portions of chicken & piece of fish. There was nore than enough chips for 3 of us & we did not eat all the chips as there was too much but they were the nicest chips we had tasted for a while. The chicken was lovely & so was the fish. When we return to Brecon we will definately order from Tad Cod again.

I was so pleased to learn about a new chippy in Brecon, and do my best to support local businesses- unfortunately I had a really awful experience here. The chips were so burnt and soggy, filled with grease. I took them home, and my friend said he could smell something burning (it was the burnt chips) so I ventured back and was told it was the type of chip and there was nothing wrong with them. I get that in hospitality it's impossible to get everything right but I was not even offered a refund or a different batch and was sniggered out of the shop. Won't be back - a great shame.

We ate in the restaurant. When I ordered at the counter the waitress seemed to mishear everything I asked for (quite annoying). We then had to wait about 15-20mins for food (which is quite a while considering it's a chip shop). The cod bites were the only thing that were nice. The mushy peas had hard shell bits (not entirely mushy). As for the chips, they were brown and poor quality potatoes. Surely a chip shop of all places only need to specialise in one thing (chips) and they can't even get that right. Would not recommend!

Moored our hired narrow boat in Brecon Basin after long days cruisingand poor weather and asked a local for recommendation for good fish and chips.

We both had large cod and chips to takeaway, the fish is freshly cooked so we had a 5 minute wait which was fine. The cod was very nice, big chunks and well cooked, the batter was tasty and not too thick but could have been a bit crispier. The chips weren’t nice, they were very greasy, soft and mushy and cut so small they were mostly bits. Shame to be let down by the absolute basics. I’d have rated 4 for the fish and a 1 for the chips

Soggy, greasy, soft, cold. Somehow over cooked and yet undercooked at the same time. The photo says it all. Honestly, the worst chips I've ever had. These should not have been served to customers.

We hadn’t been to Brecon town centre before and fancied something quick to eat. Not being a fan of chip shop chips as I always prefer my own deep fried version, we ordered the cod fingers and chips.

Being local to the area, fish n' chips has been a Hobson's choice over the years, so when my daughter told me she had shared cod and chips with her friend from the new chippie', and that she was duly impressed, I took note. The following week I was left to my own devices, so I took the opportunity to try their fare. I decided to eat in and ordered the large cod and chips and tea, the food arrived ten minutes later - a large battered cod and a mountain of chips! The fish and batter where delicious and the chips better than their competition, the mug of tea the perfect traditional accompaniment ! The staff where amiable and industrious, and the restaurant area, though small was clean and pleasant. I said this seems a traditional chippie - closed on Monday, early evening closing and quality food, long may it continue.

They were very clean and efficient they cooked our order while we waited the chips were what we call real chips like fish shops used to cook and the fish was beautiful huge chunks of cod fish you had to physically chew not tiny flaked cod real chunks like old fashioned chip shops used to make , I would defiantly buy from here again a gastro pleasure and I would recommend people try it for themselves I don't think they will be disapointed

Ordered takeout fish and chips about 7pm one saturday night in March 19. Staff were very pleasant and polite, you order and pay, then your food is cooked to order - usually a good sign. Cod was skinny and consequently overcooked, batter was ok, nothing special, Chips were cut too thin for my taste and contained lots of scraps for the bin. Brecon is not the best place to want fish and chips and this is certainly not the worst chip shop in town.

We were so impressed with Tad Cod! We've had a takeaway here and also had a sit down meal in the café. It's lovely inside - really clean too. The people and owners who work there are also very friendly. I've never been that keen on fish and chips as it is often dry. However, Tad Cod fish and chips were incredible, I don't know how they make batter like that, it was so tasty! The chips are proper home made chips too. Thank you so much, you should all be proud of yourselves!
