Came here with friends, first impressions DIRTY! run down building. Ordered two sandwiches bread felt stale definitely made few days before, middle of sandwich felt cold, got a side of coleslaw all vegetables no mayo. Can tell management isn't training young staff well. Toilets were dirty, looked as if they haven’t been moped/ cleaned in weeks! The bins were overflowing and smelled horrendous. Place wasn’t busy but it took over 15 minutes for the sandwiches to be served. Overall terrible service run down building, with bad hygiene. Do not recommended there’s better places to go for lunch.

This spot is great for a snack after a walk up the mountain. Containing a nice range of lunch foods it's a lovely place to eat. You can sit inside and outside. Decent value. Nice staff.

Synge & Byrne is a welcoming, relaxed, casual cafe with very friendly staff. Their food is delicious with a wide variety. The coffee was excellent, the best coffee in all of Ireland - the republic and Northern Ireland. We had been travelling through Ireland for 10 days and finally found a great coffee. Highly recommend them.

Terrible service. Terrible manager (dark haired lady with glasses). I presume she was a manager as she stood at the till barking at her young staff in my earshot. There is a school attached to this cafe and quite a lot of students and staff appear to use the cafe. About 15 came in at the same time and I watched and heard absolute chaos unfold. The staff appeared to be preparing food for one at a time. No multitasking. I heard someone order just a coffee and they were waiting at least 10 minutes. Some actually left the queue after 15 mins waiting Our coffee arrived warm. It was remade and was lovely. They use good coffee. Our sandwiches were awful. Definitely made at least a day before and very, very scarce on filling. Bread was stale. My side salad came 10 mins later! Ate very little but waitress didn’t enquire about this. Second round of coffees & tray bakes was grand and was served quickly. Excellent location for a business lunch but I won’t be back.

We visited the cafe last weekend and its situated in Slieve Gullion and is surrounded by natural beauty. The cafe wasn't busy but the staff seemed to be rushing around. We ordered and got sea5tede. my breakfast came and it was very tasty but my partner had ordered Avocado toast with poached eggs - but the avocado toast came and 5 mins later two poached eggs came on a plate. With no explanation as to the lateness. Very poor service. As they have a "captive" audience in the park - the service should be of better quality.

This place could be a little gold mine and the location of the cafe is in a park predominantly geared for children so I am very surprised at the lack of choice on the children’s menu. Basically, there was 3 choices. sausage & chips, savoury or sweet wrap or soup. There was no chicken left and the soup was an adult combination. There was no jacket spuds and this was 1pm, I was advised all they had to offer was in the counter window which was ciabatta combinations & sourdough bread…so I ordered a cheese sandwich and a ham sandwich for the children. Can’t go wrong with that surely? ….yes afraid so…we got toasties with cheese melted running out if it and a bacon on the top, the other was a ham toastie, I advised immediately that this is not what I ordered, I just wanted sandwiches for the children. I was advised “this is how we serve all our sandwiches as toasties” ok well where does it say that on your board? I just asked for ham & cheese sandwiches…I saw the staff grinning and looking at each other in a bemused way so I’m glad they thought it was funny. We eventually got replacements sandwiches but the bread was not even buttered - see photo attached! Footnote to the proprietor- this is the best & most effective way to lose your credibility, just read your reviews against your business. It’s quite shocking. Your menu needs changed it’s not child friendly and who wants to pay £7.95 for a sausage roll!!! Next time I will bring my own food for sure.

Absolutely awful - I never write reviews but I certainly went out of my way to write this review. Firstly the place is filthy dirty, the young staff hadn’t not a notion how to deal with the public and we’re under serious pressure, lastly I had to change my 7month old baby in a hallway as the toilets were so dirty and stinking!!! The hall way was so dirty and covered in dead flys and wasps!!!!!

Came here with my son and nearly 4 year old grandson after our fun walk seeing the Giants lair. I got a latte and a malteaser tray bake for myself, an Americano and snickers tray bake for my son and a smoothie along with with a brownie for my grandson. It all came to just under £18. We enjoyed it but felt there could be more child friendly cakes for children as the selection didn't include anything he particularly liked the look of. The brownie was very nice but too rich for a young child's taste. I'd definitely visit again and would possibly try the cooked food selection to see if this was more suited. It was an enjoyable rest break in very pleasant surroundings. We noted that the tables were cleaned promptly after use and we found the staff to be pleasant and helpful.

Went to this cafe last Saturday just after 12pm after walking the fairy trail. Second time here and will be the last. Four disinterested teenage staff on a go slow despite the large queue. Filthy tables, we had to ask twice for our table to be wiped, and I guarantee you the floor hasn’t had been properly washed in years. Four water glasses were delivered to us and deposited on the dirty table, three of the glasses were covered in lumps of dirt and watermarks, we drank from the bottles instead. The food was fine but nothing to write home about, the ordered chipotle chicken sandwiches were minus chipotle. This cafe is in a beautiful location and could be really great with some effort. It urgently needs a serious deep clean and the staff need an injection of enthusiasm and more speed. They’re visibly miserable and clearly don’t want to be there. Also I note an owner response to a review back in 2019 regarding baby seats stating that there’d be more than two of them very soon. I can confirm that in January 2023 there are still only two baby seats, and yes, they were both absolutely filthy.

We had lunch here today. The roasted veg wrap was inedible! It is hard to find the words - it tasted like it had been reheated multiple times, some of the veg were mush and others were chewy. The wrap itself seemed stale. The table beside us got the same and also couldn't eat it. The toilet in the actual cafe is also disgusting. The facilities in the Forest park are 100% - but they are a walk from the cafe when you have hot food and drinks sitting (especially for young children). My husband has the chicken and bacon sandwich - it was OK, but again seemed dry and as if it had been heated multiple times.

I rarely endeavour to leave reviews but thought I’d leave a quick thought after visit on Friday past (7th). With the forest park and giants lair attraction on site, myself and friends seen it as set in a nice location however cafe itself left a lot to be desired. Outside seemed unkept with little decor and inside seemed out dated and in need of a massive makeover. Tables seemed mix matched and was quite dark and menu seemed in need of revising for better range of options. Even at the till looking down the back of the shop, it seemed cluttered with what looked like prep benches in centre of kitchen next to where dirty dishes were brought in and washed and other unused spaces wasted with what appeared to be recycling left in a pile near far door. To me just looked in need of major tidy and proper organising. Food compensated for this massively however hence happy to say not all negative despite average rating. Breakfast items we had were highly enjoyable and staff made an extra effort to make fresh when asked despite fact we seen prepped items in fridge already and it being past 12 and there only being two on. Coffee was also well made and nice to have a different selection of alternative milks, with us not having to wait to long for either to arrive to table. Both staff members were very courteous going out of their way to fetch us extra items we needed I.e. water, extra sauces etc. Nice to also see salads and that being prepped fresh to replace staler items and serve-over despite minimal in options nicely presented. Overall with a few subtle touches cafe has a lot of potential for local area.

Really poor lunch. The salads are so dry and unappetising. I don’t know how you can go wrong with a ham & cheese toastie but it was inedible. The cheese was Emmental which I thought was a bit random and acquired test. The cafe itself is also quite dilapidated and run down.

As I was ordering I noticed that the kitchen was very untidy e.g stuff lieing on the floor and food waste still there from when the last sandwich was being made. maybe that’s just a busy Sunday? Expected more especially when you are being charged a lot. coffee was nice to be fair but overall bad experience.

I visited the Slieve Gullion cafe today with my toddler- I deliberately have avoided this place since after it opened in this location due to consistently terrible service and clueless staff in the hope that teething problems would eventually settle. Alas they have not. After paying for my food and drinks at the till I looked around to find a high chair for my son only to be told (unapologetically) that they only had one, which was in use. Hard to believe I know but this ACTUALLY turned out to be true as I asked another teenage staff member. I then asked for a refund from another teenage disinterested and unapologetic staff member as clearly they couldn’t facilitate my toddler. When I asked this staff member why they only had the one high chair she replied that ‘they kept breaking’. I asked if it would be a good idea to replace them as clearly it’s losing custom for the business and she sighed with the reply ‘we can’t really get any right now’!!!!! I could have laughed at how outrageously ludicrous her reply was. No apology from any staff member. I can confirm that terrible service and customer care remains a constant at this cafe and in my opinion is absolutely best avoided. I’m sure Synge and Byrne know that if you fail to look after your customer someone else will- which was my experience today and will continue to be in the future.

Awkwardly queued at till point waiting to get served, myself and other customers unsure of where to stand/go, no clear direction or instruction. Ordered food and drinks and eventually told to sit down and it would be brought to table. After a few minutes a very nice young lady came with drinks which were not for our table but she proceeded to give the tea to my other half. And then customers from other table Informed her it was their tea. My latte arrived quite a while after that. After a further 15minutes the gentleman who served us arrived down with our drinks even though we already got them, he apologised and gave us the drinks anyway. He asked if we had received our food which we hadn't, so he said he would follow it up, a few minutes later another member of staff came to ask us what food we had ordered as they had no record of it on their system. When it arrived it was very nice, they gave us complimentary buns for all the confusion. I just find the entire service confusing. Staff are lovely but come across disorganised and awkward which I feel is due to the style of service provided in the particularly awkward shaped cafe. I wouldn't rush back because this has not been an isolated occasion.

Did not know it was reopened. Hungry and called in for a fill up before tea. It looks so bright and clean now. I took a seat and was greeted by a gaggle of young friendly smiling girls, all giddy and gossipy. Still they were easy on the eye and very friendly. I ordered a sausage roll and a latte. But I was hungry so J ordered another sausage roll and got an extra shot in the coffee as it was weakish. I recommend it fully. At £6.00 pricey. Sausage roll was £1.75 each and not big.
