Sylvan in Glasgow City

Fantastic decor, lovely staff but the star of the show was the excellent food. Had the braised peas, roasted tomatoes and goats cheese. All tremendous paired with a lovely bottle of wine. The bread too just topped an absolutely fantastic evening. Thanks Sylvan and sorry my picture doesn’t do the food justice!!

Probably the best place for vegetarian food in Glasgow. Every time I visit I'm apprehensive that it won't live up to past experiences, then it's perfect.

the price point in here for the food that is served is outrageous. £13 for a plate of peas with a single fried egg on top. service started off ok but the person service clearly couldn‘t be bothered tending to our table. routinely ignored simple requests. when we asked for the bill we waited s further twenty mind before having to ask again - the restaurant wasnt that busy. There are far better options close by, I would not recommend Sylvan.

Gorgeous restaurant and lovely, busy atmosphere on a Friday night. Crazy tasty vegetarian food prepared well - we ordered a lot but the stand outs were the chicory salad with hazelnuts and orange dressing, and also the smoked tomatoes and yoghurt. Great wine selection. Came with my boyfriend, will definitely be back soon. Thank you Charlie for looking after us. :)

Beautiful place, great service and the food is delicious. I went for the polenta, unfortunately they didn’t have it. But it made me try the smoked tomatoes and OMG they were delicious! I would highly recommend it if you are vegetarian and visiting Glasgow. Peas and fried eggs were a bit overpriced, I would not order again. Great selection of wine

Fast service and loads of interesting and tasty dishes to choose from. You can't go wrong. Highly recommend the tofu fenugreek. The decor is really stylish as well.

We came here on the recommendation of a friend and it was a wonderful experience. The vibe of the restaurant is so relaxed with chilled indirect lighting, lots of plants and books. Felt like being in a friends stylish living room. A funky colourful clientele made for a good atmosphere. It was just so relaxing to be there, plus they played a very nice selection of music - at a sociable volume. Sylvan benefits from an efficient staff team that perfectly strike the balance of being there when you need them but not at all obtrusive. Such elegant menu choices and the food is so beautifully tasty - healthy too. Highly recommended Sylvan 10/10

Outstanding vegetarian and vegan food, great cocktails, lovely atmosphere.

We came here for a celebratory dinner and could not have been more delighted. The food is excellent, as is the wine list, and our server was spectacular—he gave great recommendations on pairings and was courteous and attentive. The dishes were really creative and blended textures and flavours artfully: the smoked tomato and yoghurt, mushroom with polenta, and jammy grapes with rice pudding were especially delightful, but all of the dishes we tried were lush. Generous portions for a tapas-style meal as well. There was a great ambience with soft evening lighting and low music, and we did not feel rushed. I will definitely be coming back here.

Brilliant food. You do not miss meat at all (if you're not a veggie, I am not). Great wine list (too much natural wine for me, but my party loved it). Staff are all interested and interesting. Pricing is super fair and for the quality, underpriced. I cannot stand (or understand) the dishes coming out, and they are ready rather than in an orderly usable fashion, but that's what Sylvan does, so I cannot mark them down for that. The tomatoes are overrated, but the food was brilliant.

Simple food for extraordinary prices. £15 for a dish of broccoli - just broccoli with some sesame oil. We spent £50 in total on food for two and both left still feeling hungry.

The service was fantastic - staff were so welcoming and knowledgeable. And the food!!! It’s amazing, we tried lots of different dishes and all of them were perfect. The ultimate favourite was the smoked tomatoes. I don’t know what wizardry is involved in making them but they are like nothing else - a must try!! Thanks and will be back soon, Jen

We visited Sylvan last Wednesday and we had a great time! The service was super friendly. We really enjoyed the food, the chefs really understands vegetarian/vegan kitchen. If you are a fan of trying something new or different, I definitely recommend you visit Sylvan. The Ambiente was nice, makes you feel comfortable and the open kitchen creates a great atmosphere. I like that it feels like you're at home!

The food was absolutely amazing! We came in a big group so we just ordered one of everything on the menu and it was unbelievable! Everything we had was delicious, the waiting staff were lovely and restaurant itself was beautiful. Really enjoyed it, would go back again.

Best atmosphere for a vegan meal in Glasgow hands down. Been here twice and both times had incredibly friendly service which made the experience, and the food is really delicious and creative. Love the decor too - feel transported to Alsace!

I cannot fault the food or service, both were exceptional. However, what I did not like are the gender-neutral toilets, being seated very close to other diners even though the restaurant was quiet, and the automatic 10% service charge that wasn’t clearly pointed out.

Visitamos este restaurante debido a una recomendación y que la persona sabe que soy vegetariana así que cruzé los dedos. Nos dieron una cálida bienvenida sentados y nos dieron menús y una orden de bebidas tomadas. Pedimos nuestra comida después de estudiar el menú hablando con el miembro del personal. Pedimos los tomates ahumados y el yogur, un puré de patatas griego con plato de ajo, queso de cabra con miel y cobertura de higos y los brotes de judías picantes acompañados de un pan plano. Todo estaba delicioso y sabroso, el puré griego estaba muy ajoso y sombrío y no a gusto de mi pareja, los brotes de judías se servían fríos (como debía) el pan plano apenas estaba caliente. Hubo problemas de temperatura que pensamos cuando pedimos otro pan y estaba directamente en el horno y temperatura totalmente diferente de la primera. Mi compañera podía ver la cocina desde su asiento y podía ver la comida recién cocinada sentada esperando ser servida. Sin embargo, estas cosas menores aparte disfrutamos de nuestra comida. ¿Volveríamos... sí pero habría que hacer preguntas sobre cómo se sirven los platos... calientes o calientes o fríos?

Really delicious food and great wine list

This is one of the most gorgeous, atmospheric restaurants in Glasgow. The service was super friendly, and the food was exceptional. Highly recommend - the smoked tomatoes in yogurt are one of the nicest dishes I’ve ever eaten in my life. Great to see fully vegetarian food cooked and presented in this way - you immediately forget you’re even in a vegetarian restaurant. Huge wine list too - loved the orange wine.

This was good but not excellent. It had the potential to be excellent but was let down by a few things: Firstly the service was glacially slow. The staff were attentive and professional but it took over one hour to receive our food - which is too long given the relatively small menu and the fact that much of the food is served cold. This is no reflection on the individual staff. Secondly the menu is not as adventurous as it thinks it is - and at 8:30 three of the hot main courses were already sold out. Combing these two points meant we had to order everything that was left on the menu and although there are definitely moments of brilliance (peanut salad, tofu, were both excellent) some of the food is just “good” (roast tomatoes, broccoli). As this is small plates the biggest negative was the fact that the dishes do not all work together as a single dining experience- eg we’re eating, rice, fried bread, stilton, and broccoli in soy sauce … hmm Other small plate vegan restaurants I have been to have a more cohesive menu - where the dishes are not just good in their own right but work together - after all you will be eating them together. Would like to see Sylvan consider how each dish can complement the others.. Wine list is excellent Decor and ambience is excellent. Overall - nearly but not quite for me.

Brilliant place with great food. The pear on toast with stilton custard, and the carrots were stand out! Service really friendly, welcoming and fast. Can't wait to come back!

Went with my girlfriend to try, we were really excited about it because the place looks really good and the dishes were mouthwatering however when we got there the place was like a sauna and we were a bit disappointed looking at the menu which seemed like it was only starters and no actual mains. The worst part was the food, which wasn’t properly served as the menu makes you expect ; we couldn’t figure out what was in our plate and it was deceiving. Wanting to try a vegetarian restaurant, I’m unfortunately not going to try again. This was sort of traumatising for me.

Tasty enough food but why present it as starters and mains when really it’s more tapas style? Not everyone is willing to share their plate. Some of the prices bit ridiculous for a « small plate ». £3.5 for one piece of flatbread? Wine list very dense and layered in a odd way, making it difficult to find the prices per glass/bottle. However nice interior and good service. But too expensive for veggie food.

Esto me lo recomendó un compañero vegano en el trabajo. Hoy estaba libre, así que fuimos allí por primera vez como un grupo de tres. El área alrededor de la calle George's Cross está llena de obras de carretera, por lo que no es el mejor paseo desde el centro de la ciudad en este momento. Hay una estación de metro cerca. Los platos principales son todos platos compartidos, que no era inmediatamente obvio en el menú, y había una oferta a la hora del almuerzo para tres platos más dos bebidas por £ 30. Eso resultó como un ahorro de alrededor de £ 18 que fue una ganga. Esto obviamente funciona mejor si hay un número par en el grupo. Ese trato y un par de guarniciones tenían suficiente comida para los tres mientras dejábamos espacio para el desierto. Había un consumidor de carne en el grupo que amaba los hongos, pero no le gustaba el sabor o la textura del tofu. El tofu era mi favorito (frito y masticable) , seguido de los hongos. Lovingly prepared delicious vegetarian small plates packed with flavour. We didn't have any wine but impressed by the extensive selection available. The service was friendly and efficient. Tasty Low alcohol beer available on draft which was a bonus. Very accommodating to specific dietary requirements.

We've been meaning to try Sylvan for many years due to its great reviews and because it has so many vegan options. It was packed on Friday night so we had a late table. Service was lacklustre from the start, probably because it was so busy. We hadn't anticipated the prices, it was eyewatering! When seated we took a look at the wine list, the cheapest bottle of red was £36 and they went up from there, we stuck to beer and water. We had to ask about how the menu worked (prices were main dish prices - £15 for broccoli - but turns out they are side dishes). We were recommend 6 dishes for 4 which turned out to be more than needed. The food was average, perhaps our expectations for a £12 bowl of green beans in tomato sauce were higher than they could deliver? Some dishes were unbearably spicy, it would have been good to mark this on the menu as 2 of our table are spice intolerant and we wouldn't have ordered these options if we'd known. Rice pudding is the vegan dessert option which is far too heavy after so much food. To finish off the coffee was the worst I've had in a long time. Came to £120 for 4 including a small tip (which wasnt really earned). We won't come back, much better vegan options in Glasgow at prices Glaswegians can afford.

The service was lovely and the food was stunning. Really reasonably priced too. We’d come from Manchester for a weekend away and this really made the trip special. The broccoli being my personal favourite!

Really loved having food here. Pleasure to get so much great veggie food and creative too. 3 of the dishes we wanted to try were unavailable by 8.15pm which was disappointing but the smoked tomato and yogurt dish was exceptionally good and the beans with tomatoes also. Loved the flatbread and padron peppers. Wasn't such a fan of the broccoli with pepper sauce, a bit overwhelming compared to the really well judged flavours of all the other food. Staff were lovely. Highly recommended.

Really great service and just next level vegetarian and vegan food. The tofu was great and the polenta and mushrooms are my favourite. Took recommendations from the staff on the wine and it was really worth it. Both were excellent.

We decided to go to this restaurant because of the Google reviews and it certainly deserves them! We didn't know what to choose and they helped us choose, a great success, we shared four dishes and left satisfied and happy, everything was very delicious and very friendly! Very good value for money.

This gem in the West End is a real joy for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike, tired of the burger at the pub or fish and chips, here you can find a refined environment with attention to the smallest details. The menu offers interesting dishes all based on vegetables or cheeses, these are not banal dishes and I think that the menu changes depending on the season, this is also a factor of attention to the food and the customer. The staff is very attentive and the service was fast. Special mention for the wine list, they have lots of really interesting proposals. Not cheap but can definitely be worth it. I loved it!

Our server Rowan was an absolute joy!! Beautiful restaurant with a gorgeous atmosphere and even better food. We ordered about twice as much as we could eat (with plenty of pre-warning from our waiter haha) and seriously loved every mouthful. If you have to try one dish, please let it be the Baba Ganoush!!!!

Been a few times before for food but visited tonight just for some wine. Such a lovely setting and a fantastic wine list. The manager (?) was so helpful and patient with us choosing our drinks. Lucky to have somewhere like this in Glasgow

All members of staff we dealt with were great, attentive without being disruptive. Food was excellent, as were the cocktails. It has a nice relaxing atmosphere, even though it was reasonably busy it wasn't noisy. Sylvan was recommended to us by a friend, and we'll definitely be passing the recommendation to others who are in the area.

Great little gen this, nice drinks, lovely staff and a real eclectic set off small plates to eat. The only thing that let it down for me was the food options, I like veggie food - but stay away from dairy etc.

Excelente variedad de platos pequeños vegetarianos. Pedimos 12 platos para una fiesta de 6 que terminó siendo demasiado, sin embargo cada plato se mantuvo y fue agradable a su manera. El servidor, aunque amable, estropeó nuestro pedido por completo y solo nos dieron la mitad de las cosas que pedimos, además de algunas otras cosas aleatorias agregadas allí. Se disculparon por el error y esto no afectó a nuestra tarde. La selección de bebidas era fuerte con cerveza relativamente barata y algunos cócteles creativos (el amaretto agrio era delicioso! ). En general, es un buen lugar, especialmente para los vegetarianos, pero esperan pagar bastante.

Came for dinner. Had the padron peppers, chicory salad, bean sprouts and smoked tomatoes. Plenty of food, I eat a lot so 4 dishes really filled me up. Food was excellent, delicious flavours and well presented. Staff were friendly and helpful. Great atmosphere and setting with plenty of seating, catering to plenty of drop ins. Smoked tomatoes were a standout dish which mixes lightly smoked fresh tomatoes with a creamy yoghurt sauce. Had a broad selection of wines available. Had the Fabrizio Vella, Nero d'Avola from Sicily which was great.

I've been to Sylvan numerous times for lunch and dinner over the past couple of years. The staff are professional and friendly, and the service is fast. The food is very delicious and beautifully presented. I have coeliac: they have excellent provision for gluten-free diets. The small plates are not that small - they are generous portions and each dish is enough for two to share. The interior is spacious and cosy at the same time, with natural wood furnishings, comfy banquettes and seats, and contemporary glass light fixtures. A great location for the West End and Charing X end of town. Now, if only it had a courtyard garden...

A very pretty restaurant with lovely staff. They change menus often so I was a little bit disappointed that I didn’t find what I wanted on the menu that day. I like the creativity they have put into the dishes. Food was on the heavy side, too salty and oily for me.

It’s my favourite restaurant in Glasgow and I’m not even a veggie. The food here is incredible and the wine is super tasty.

So we are not from Glasgow. We checked the time of the restaurant and we found they close at 11. We went at 9 pm and they told us the kitchen is closed.. the next day we called at 3:40 pm and we booked a table just to make sure we get a table, we told them we are coming in 15 minutes.. we arrived on time. And they said they serving drinks only as the kitchen is closed.. we called 15 min earlier and when we asked for the table they did not pass that information to us. I was disappointed and honestly unhappy with the attitude.. they shouldn’t assume everyone knows when kitchen open and close .. if you tell me you are open I assume the kitchen is open .. I understand kitchen closes an hour before the restaurant does .

Ate here. Medium sized, modern, vegetarian restaurant with a busy buzzy friendly atmosphere. Service was friendly and efficient. Food was excellent, truly very delicious. Price was reasonable. Would definatley go back again.

Unreal food here, every dish sampled was sublime and service was laidback but efficient so couldn't ask for more. Can't wait to go back

This was our first time visiting after a friend recommended. It looks very unassuming on the outside but once you go in, wow! It’s big and airy inside with great atmosphere and well spaced out tables. There was a nice mix of customers from relaxed groups to people on date night. The service was outstanding as was the food. The menus are plain-speaking and don’t elaborate on ingredients or how it will be presented - but who really needs that? when the food arrives, it speaks for itself. We’ll definitely be back to sample some more dishes soon.

Good food, good service and a good location. All vegetarian. There were several very good dishes and my favorite was the cashews with seaweed salt. Quite the combination.

We had heard really good things about Sylvan. Unfortunately we did not think it lived up to the expectations. Every dish we ordered was very heavy and rich and there was no light or fresh counterpart. The yoghurt with smoked tomatoes was extremely salty (they added salt to the yoghurt too). I also think serving rice with these kind of dishes is a bit odd. Waiters were nice and atmosphere was good but I would not go back.

This was an absolute gem of a vegetarian place. Great beers (loved the peach lager), food was top notch- I'd suggest sharing plates- and the ambience was just about perfect with the right level of background music that you could chat easily but we're not exposed to other people's conversations. Highly recommended.

Food was delicious, really beautifully cooked and packed with taste. Babaganoush, rice pudding and the chickory & orange salad were stand out! Service excellent, very professional staff. Could display some soft drink options on drinks menu but staff explained the options. One of the most consistently great places to eat for vegetarians and vegans, thank you!

Very nice experience at the place! The chicory salad with hazelnuts was unique and the vegan polenta came with lots of mushroom! Probably the mushroom was on the salty side but that was offset by the plain polenta. Definitely worth the try! I wish their babaganoush was vegan! Traditionally babaganoush does not need yoghurt in it!

I was in with a group of friends (mostly non-veggies) and we all agreed there was great food, service and vibe. I've already told other friends about Sylvan and I anticipate becoming a regular.

Incredible place!! Staff were lovely, friendly and attentive, beautiful setting and great atmosphere. The food was absolutely stunning. We shared 4 mains, a flatbread and pudding between two and were full and very satisfied. The polenta and mushrooms and the tofu and tomato with seaweed were particularly delicious, the goats cheese was also amazing. The drinks were great too, we had sparkling red and cocktails. Would recommend to everyone interested in delicious flavours and textures. Will be back!!

Amazing food, the roast pears with fried bread and Stilton custard was like nothing I’ve ever had before. The service was also brilliant, especially the tall waiter wearing a gilet (on Saturday 23rd March eve) - was very accommodating. Also it was so cheap! £20 between two people for four dishes (big portions) and a drink each. There was some more expensive wine on the menu but you don’t have to spend a lot if you don’t want to.

Had such a lovely evening here, perfect for a date night and large groups as it is a tapas style restaurant. Didn't get any photos of the food because it was too good to not eat straight away. The menu is limited, but all options are vegetarian with many of vegan dishes also. As a meat-eater myself I was impressed that it didn't feel lacking. The staff are so attentive and friendly, they really added to the dining experience.

The smoked tomatoes with yogurt are insanely delicious, one of the best dishes I’ve ever tried. Top marks too to the margarita. Staff are lovely and the space is terrific. Great place!

What a meal! One of my new favourite restaurants , so much flavour in every dish, unique flavours and an overall 10/10 restaurant. A must visit for glasgow foodies. Also very reasonable price for quality of food. :)

Small plates, high price tag (£12 each, £66 for a bottle of ok wine). Flavours were interesting but far too oily and heavy. All served cold! Another weird thing is the layout of the place ... The room is spacious but it is packing tiny tables all along the walls! I wouldn't recommend.

Sylvan is a great ambassador for vegetarian restaurants. The food is deliciously imaginative , the staff are friendly and the ambience is warm and relaxed. They also have an interesting selection of biodynamic wines.

Whilst the dishes we had were nice, they weren't particularly special. Some were overly flavoured (polenta and mushrooms), with a lot of umami type rich flavours. However there were no choices on the menu that were particularly filling or substantial, so even with lots of small plates to share, it just felt something was lacking- some protein or carbs maybe....though we did have both rice and flatbread. Overall, I thought its nice, but I wouldn't go back. I suspect its reputation and busyness are more through popularity and character than substance

Excellent. Such great tasting food. So many gluten free options it didn't feel you were missing out which can be quite common for vegetarian food. Great variations of flavours with standard in season vegetables. Such clever and tasty combinations. Only thing I couldn't recommend is the cauliflower and the restaurant felt quite cold which was a shame. The wine list is also very good as well, if a little on the expensive side.

Well, we’ll, so disappointed. Reheats, sweet and sour potatoes not even fresh, rice cold waiting for the broccoli. Everything in plastic containers, ready to reheat yuk. Also establishment dirty. Reheated slops Will never go back. I’ve eaten in plenty of vegetarian places in Glasgow , no wonder there’s no set menu

I have been a vegetarian for 45 years & lacto-vegetarian for 5. What an utter delight to eat somewhere that cooks interesting & really yummy vegetarian & vegan food using nuts & vegetables (without it following the current boring trend of mimicking meat dishes & using processed meat substitutes which I hate). The babaganoush, mushroom & polenta & the chicory salad were all amazing & I would highly recommend them all. Amazing choice of unusual & tasty wines too. Will definitely go again when I’m visiting Glasgow

Wonderful food and excellent service. Especially loved the Smoky Babaganoush and the pears with blue cheese custard. The Nero Davola and Malbec were good too. Food portions are larger than expected for Tapas style and felt very full on 4 dishes. Great value.

This is a very nice place. It has a relaxed vibe and some Springsteen memorabilia too. The food is perhaps a bit pricey but the portions are extremely generous, so just order fewer plates. The polenta with mushrooms is a standout dish, and the tofu and spinach is really tasty. Another reviewer has taken some photos of those plates below. Recommended.

After hearing lots of great reviews from friends on Instagram my girlfriend and I decided to give it a try . Overall we were fairly pleased although there were one or two dishes we did not enjoy. The decor in the restaurant was lovely with beautiful wooden elements and a bar . The staff were friendly although I would say they could have been more informative . The food was medium plates so we had five in total with three good and two not so good. The almond baba ganoush was very tasty and I would recommend it however we only found out after that it was non vegan which is not a problem for me but my partner has dairy issues so we should have been advised this as standard baba ganoush is usually vegan. The sweet and hot potatoes were excellent so I highly recommend them. The bean sprouts with chilli and pickle were also delightful with a beautiful texture and taste . The green beans with tomato was unfortunately not great as the spices caused an accrid aftertaste which is a shame. Finally we went for mushrooms and polenta which had a lovely balance of texture but were both very salty so we struggled to finish. Overall we enjoyed our experience here and would recommend but we will definitely ask more questions and do our research on what works.

Food was good but the broccoli and beans sprouts were far too spicy. Overall enjoyable meal but need to tone down the spice.

stunning. was in a group of 6 so we ordered almost everything on the menu and got to try it all and left very full. portions are well sized for the price. not a big drinker but the orange wine we had was lovely and it's definitely catered to people who like unique wine. will be back

Just discovered this place, food was fantastic. Baba ghanoush to die for, great cheeses and wine. Rice pudding also excellent. Service perfect.

The food was delicious, I love it when I find amazing vegetarian and vegan food which shows that the chefs have a lot of imagination and create incredible combinations with simple ingredients. The staff was lovely too: friendly, professional and always attentive. Can’t wait to go back!

Easily some of the best food I’ve ever eaten - it’s that good. I tell everyone visiting Glasgow to eat here. Everything tastes incredible - it’s all generous, delicious sharing plates - I wanted to order the entire menu - this was my 2nd visit. Also great cocktails and wine list, staff are polite, attentive and service is immaculate.

Vegetarian and visited Sylvan after reading a review in Scotsman Newspaper. Their review was accurate. Food was nice but nothing special small plates of food. Friday evening 18.30 and not terrible busy. Large selection of wines ideal place to share wine and food with friends but don't expect big portions of food.

First time for dinner which was wonderfully tasty. Lovely staff and interior.
