Swan Chinese Restaurant Epping in Epping Forest

Collected a takeaway on a busy night. Obviously was busy that evening so a slight wait but food was very good and friendly service. They must have mis heard my order as it was slightly wrong but no major issue as I was charged accordingly. Food hygiene rating is 5 at the time of writing this and that's super important to me. Cash only is annoying and suspicious. Thanks

Great food as always. The card payment machine wasn't working so we had to go across to the petrol station to withdraw cash but the restaurant wasn't to blame!

The food here is DELICIOUS… and the portions are huge! We also had it for lunch the next day! I highly recommend this place!

Fantastic food, friendly staff, best Chinese I've had for ages

Lovely food they sent two rice dishes by mistake, very happy to say they delivered noodle dish very quickly everything hot and tasty

It is always consistently good with delicious food and very meticulous and friendly service. Contemporary interior and everything looked appetising and was served beautifully. We love it Swan Chinese Epping and have always highly recommended.

This restaurant is a favourite, but tonight I was disappointed as your website said the restaurant open from 5.00, so I drove in from Loughton, but found at 5.30 it remained in darkness and closed. Weary. Had to use New China for a takeaway which was very nice. Also, our favourite waitress had been ‘moved on’? Such a shame.

Used to be a great Chinese - not no more won’t be using again- tonight’s food was not edible and was put in the bin - very disappointing

I just had what I think was a perfect Dinner from the Swan Restaurant. Everything was spot on I had Egg fried Rice Chicken Chowmein Singapore Noodles Sweet & Sour Chicken Hong King Style. Perfect

I ordered chicken satays and specifically said no peanut sauce as my son has a nut allergy and ordered curry sauce Instead. They sent peanut sauce which I proceeded to pour over my sons rice and Noodles! This is the second time this has happened with them 👎👎

This restaurant kept me waiting for my delivery of food from 20:36 until 22:00 and still no delivery! I called at 21:36 they told me the driver is on the way. I called again at 22:00 and they said the kitchen is closed and the driver has gone home. Why let me wait 1 hour and 24 minutes? I could have ordered from somewhere else. Now I will go to sleep without dinner, thanks. It goes without saying I won't be ordering from here again. Terrible terrible service.

Excellent Chinese, as a resident of Epping I can say that this is the best Chinese in the town. Friendly staff, quick delivery and the portions are very generous. Prices are a little expensive tho. Highly Recommended!! They do throw in free prawn crackers as well with take away meal like most Chinese restaurants do, which is a nice extra.

Nice food but check your bill. I was charged 10 pound over on my bill. But didn't realise until I got home.

If I could vote 0 stars I would and I’ll leave the worst till last in this review.. The menu’s were sticky and would make squelching noises as you turned the pages, we ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and received Pinot Grigio, the waiter kept our change and we had to ask the manager for it back (we would’ve tipped if they gave us the change back!) and last but definitely not least.. I have been unwell with food poisoning for 2 days now!! Do not eat here whatsoever. Even if it’s the last restaurant open, go hungry. I have been up all night being sick and unable to eat anything since my dinner here!!

Overpriced bland food, not even proper Chinese. Poor customer service, they don't care whatsoever, better spend your money elsewhere. I gave them multiple chances and ended up dissapointed over and over again

The food was pretty good - however all the prices are their website are wrong. I was expecting to pay £15 for my order and ended up paying about £10 more. It also says that delivery is free but I had to pay £2?! Won’t be ordering again because of this.

Finally found a decent Chinese takeaway. We ordered for delivery. Food was fantastic, all dishes was amazing, tasted fresh and delicious. Customer service was 10/10. I'm glad we found this place now. Thank you Swan Chinese!

Won’t order again , way over priced and doesn’t taste as nice as the others in the area , prices changed from on their website said it was free delivery over £20 which is higher than the others and when the food came £2 then argued with me saying he said it’s including in the price , never buy from them again and I will advise everyone else not too, if it taste good then would of been half excepting the price

Delicious hot food, very fast service

We arrived 10 minutes late past our booking to find that our table had been given to someone else. We were just left standing at the entrance like a bunch of lemons as no staff attempted to speak to us to resolve the situation or try and help. The carpets were sticky and the restaurant was over crowded. Wouldn’t recommend dining here.

Mai made us feel very welcome and served us with a smile with lovely conversation. The food was excellent, we had 1/4 crispy duck, sweet & sour chicken Hong Kong, plain chow mein, boiled rice and a roast pork curry. The food was piping hot with loads of taste. Portion sizes were also good. I would recommend Swan Chinese to all! Thank you for making my little 6 year old feel so welcome too!! We will be back 👌🏻

Being told to be patient by a waiter is not how I expect to be treated when I'm paying for a service, incredibly slow service, rude staff, poor food, had better service at McDonald's. Asked to move to any empty table away from the door as we were cold to be told its laid up for 3 people, there are 4 of you, when there was clearly 4 seats was pure lazy, we moved ourselves anyway, which was effortless. Best advice give it a MISS

Went for birthday dinner. Starter was lovely...waited over 90 minutes for main. Rice came out cold without the main course. Then tried to fob us off with wrong meal! Service was shocking and didn't seem concerned that we were cross. Ruined our night!! Will never go again

Great food , shame about the very poor service. Main meal never arrived also tried to substitute beef for chicken. Honestly the very worst service i have every encountered beyond poor.

The service is appalling. Waited over 1hr 40 mins for food with a 18 month old and a 3 year old. On booking even told wanted table back quickly which suited us then never served the food!! Had to leave as got too late served food in takeaway containers and still charged £80 and argued people want to be served slowly rather than simply apologising. On the food we took away with us was cold by time home and a criminal amount of salt on some dishes that was all could taste ended up binning it.

Wonderful food always served with a smile. Takeaways are always fast, hot and delicious. This is the best Chinese in Essex!

Hour late and keep making excuses.

The seaweed was really salty. The butterfly prawns were tasteless and oily. The duck meat was lovely but there wasn't much black bean sauce with it. Ordered rice as well which was nice enough, but the rest Overall a bit of a disappointment for £32 for one person, not sure I'd order again. Understand prices have gone up and wouldn't have minded paying it if the food was worth it. Also need to update their website or delete it as all the menu prices are wrong.

Really lovely meal with excellent service. Went last week for the first time and enjoyed it so much we returned this evening. Mai and the rest of the team were so friendly and welcoming that it felt we had known them for years. We will definitely be regular visitors now. Thank you.

I usually feel lethargic after a Chinese but any meal from here just hits the spot differently! It was so good we had it on the Friday then again on Sunday. Cannot rate them highly enough!

Ordered a huge amount of Chinese, different varieties. i’m shocked, the food was absolutely tasteless, bland and no seasoning whatsoever. the fried rice was mushy with no taste, the ribs were bland. i was trying this restaurant and chose it due to the reviews. However it is not an outline of quality Chinese food in my opinion. Just a waste of money

Used to for years used to be good, lately hit and a miss but after my last experience never again guy was blunt and rude over the phone and encouraged me to order more despite me ordering the same stuff in the past and haven’t had a problem but couldn’t explain that to him as he was constantly saying over and over again ‘you need to order more, have you decided yet’ till I add another item then call ended while he mumbled what it cost. 10-15 minute later I get a call to say he made a mistake and I had to pay around the £35 mark can’t remember exact amount but I asked if I could go back to original order as i didn’t want the extra he wasn’t happy about that but after going backwards and forwards he agreed to take it off the bill. When the food came I was quite upset as the noodles were bland both portions and the chicken ball was pink but lucky the spring rolls were good and the extra spring rolls I cancelled due to their error they put in as a sign of good will. Lucky they did as that was the only thing I could eat as was cooked properly. Hence never again I loved the spring rolls but Everything else was bad and have had a few occasions where this has happened e.g. items missing, cold, undercooked, dry, hardly any meat on duck so much has gone wrong over the last few years so I have decided to not have the disappointment of looking at something I can’t eat yet pay for. 😡

Wunton soup, salt and pepp squid, sp fried rice, beef in black bean and oak Choi garlic sauce. £36!! I reasoned if it was great would be worth it. It so wasn’t. Squid tasteless with thick batter. Like a dried deep fried flip flip. Park choi watery and stingy. Rice worse than you would get in a supermarket meal deal. No love in food.. no care.. wouldn’t have paid a tenner for this. Wont order again

Waited an hour and 45 minutes for our meal to arrive and 2 items were missing.

The swan was my local Chinese, both take away and dine in. The food used to be amazing and so did the service, unfortunately this has changed not for the better. The take away always seemed to get colder and colder each time and always forgetting the curry sauce (asking me to remind them and they will give me it for free next time - what good is that, when they keep forgetting?), then we decided to dine in even though every single time we had dined in we would get over charged on the bill. When we dined in there was a young girl )known to the restaurant) sat in the restaurant who came up to our table and started eating food off of our table (this girl I think had autism so it was not her fault and her father kept going behind into the kitchen as he knew the staff) this was a very uncomfortable experience which resulted in us leaving the restaurant as the staff just watched this happen and we did ask the girl politely to return to her table. We then requested the bill from the waitress who had sat and watched this happen presented us with a bill in Chinese, I requested this in English as this seemed very expensive considering we did not have alcohol, once we received this we were charged for 4 additional cokes at £5 each. I told the waitress this was incorrect and she was quick to tell me her calculator was broken (which funnily enough it was broken the last time I went in there and they tried charging me for 3 bottles of Prosecco when only ordering 1). Such a shame as the swan used to be amazing, but has gone downhill massively. They are very over priced, the service is so poor and to top it all off they love to over charge you hoping you don’t notice - I think they forget who their regular customers are or just assume you are stupid. Not spending anymore of my money in this place and will be going to May in Epping as there Food is lovely and not as over priced as the swan. They seem to treat their customers better when you dine in also and don’t try to push their luck with over charging you for food and drinks you did not have.

My Normal order used to be £32 but with price changes it’s £58 and smaller portions

The same as other reviews for Takeaways at the Swan stated a delivery time of an hour but took over 2 hours to be delivered and the food was absolutely disgusting will not be ordering another Takeaway from here again (disappointing).. I tried calling them for over half an hour to complain as when the food eventually arrived the beef dish which was £10,80 was raw and uncooked with no answer, after a numerous of times calling I had to drive there to get a response and request a refund. If you want a nice Chinese from here, it’s best to eat in there as your waiting far too long and will most properly go hungry as you will have to return.

We booked a table for five of us yesterday evening. The restaurant had such a lovely atmosphere, the staff were so courteous and friendly. The food was absolutely delicious. Would definitely eat here again. Thank you so much. Sue Luffman

We ordered food at 1900 on 28th November 2021, we’ve waited so long that we have had to order from another Chinese, it’s now 2100. I’m beyond hungry now, just hangry. I was told the driver left at 2030, and having just rung they said “he left 5 minutes ago at 2055. No need to lie of the food isn’t on the way! Won’t be using again

Food was excellent.but the wait for it was unacceptable,we waited an hour and a quarter for our main course because they chose to prioritize takeaway service.they were continueusly flying out the door.

Ordered from the Swan tonight only for the food to take 2 hours to get to us , a family memeber ordered a special curry unfortunately it had hardly any sauce to got with it, we called a number of times to see where our food was to be told the same thing .

Excellent Chinese food. We just moved to Epping and found this place from previous reviews so we took a chance… love this place, it’s now our regular place. Food always great, service has been faultless whether we dine in or order a take away. Beef in black bean sauce is a fav, with tender meat. Good work guys.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been back here but Four of us visited last night 14th August and wow the food was amazing. We opted for the set menu B and we were all glad we did, the food tasted very fresh and the beef dish was superb. The ambiance was very relaxing and the staff couldn’t do enough for you. We had no idea which Chinese takeaway to choose in Epping so we trusted the reviews. We found gorgeous gorgeous food and friendly staff. Will be back.

This restaurant is expensive in relation to the portion sizes received. Normally 3 main dishes plus rice and noodles leaves both of us feeling full but despite being £9 to £10 for a main dish, I could have eaten that on my own given the small portion sizes. Clearly Scrooge doesn't only come out at Christmas. We won't be returning.

I have just collected an order from The Swan in Epping and I just wanted so say how organised and COVID friendly it was. The food was also lovely. Thank you for a lovely meal.

I was unwittingly mislead after ordering on Just Eat my Chinese last Saturday from Epping only to find out upon collection that The Swan in Epping was not in Just Eat and my order and payment had gone to The Swan in Brentwood! Gutted that not only did I not have any food and was £35 out if pocket the guy in the Chinese was great. He ordered my food, gave me a beer and when it was done refused to take any money from me. The food was delicious as always and his kindness was such a nice act in such depressing times.

Ordered a Chinese tonight as we haven't had one in over 6 months and never used Swan before. Unfortunately not only did our order take nearly 2hrs to reach us, but the delivery driver smelt as though he'd just come straight off the set of Cheech and Chong. I do understand the restaurant was busy on a Friday night, but not picking up any of my calls or communicating about our order when the phone was eventually answered wasn't of a standard I'd ever use again.
