The fish pie was awful mashed potato with no fish and the curry comprised curry powder mixed into the vegetable base All this as well as a poorly staffed bar meant a long wait for pre dinner drinks

Came in for an evening meal and had the lemon sole special which was delicious followed by a vanilla panna cotta with a passion fruit jelly which was a lovely summery dessert. Service was outstanding and staff were very attentive. Will definitely be coming back to The Swan & Cygnet and will recommend to friends & family

Called for a sit in the garden overlooking the pond. We only called for a snack but the Sunday lunches looked amazing. We decided on fries and home made scotch egg. We could have ordered proper chips but daughter decided on fries. The scotch egg was amazing. The egg was runny inside as it should be and the sausagemeat was very tastily seasoned with a fried coating which wasn’t greasy at all. Must call back for a main meal sometime. Staff are so friendly and on first name basis quickly. Atmosphere is great. Even though the restaurant was busy the chef was quite happy serving bar snacks and the waitresses told us exactly what the choice was

Surprisingly quiet in the restaurant for a Saturday night. This was perhaps due to excessively loud noise from customers in the bar which made conversation difficult. A great pity as the food was excellent and the service was good.

Very disappointing experience. The food is expensive in comparison to similar places and does not live up to the price. I expected hot, well cooked, tasty food. The food took a while to arrive, even though it was quiet. My steak pie was much anticipated but the meat was chewy and dry with not enough gravy. The “ triple cooked” chips weren’t! They just looked so unappetising! They were undercooked, anaemic and tasted stale as if par cooked then put aside for a too long period of time. No crispy exterior and unctuous soft centres here!!!!! Dessert? I had a strange concoction of rock hard pastry tart case that took some breaking, filled with toffee sauce and mushy, watery apple sauce, then strangely topped with cold, sliced, fresh Granny Smith apple. The accompanying brandy snap was good. Our friends had the belly pork and said it tasted lovely but the “ crackling” was soggy which spoiled it. Maybe it is supposed to be, but crispy crackling would definitely be better. Would I return? No.

The scene was set when the waitress tipped a full glass of wine over me because of how she held the tray. She literally just stood there and had to ask That she got me a cloth as the napkins were useless. She did apologise. Came for Mother’s Day lunch. Only two other tables full when we arrived. Despite this it took over an hour for food to come which was mostly awful. The meat on the Sunday dinner was full of fat. The dogs will like it though. The veg was barely cooked and was hard to cut up. Soggy roast potatoes. We were told there was a vegan Sunday dinner option of a nut roast. Then we were told there was none left so asked for a Normal roast with the meat on the side. Instead an anemic huge lump of soy arrived which wasn’t even cooked properly. No questions by staff about any allergies nor did they know it was not a nut roast. So my mum only had cauliflower peas and broccoli for her dinner. No potatoes. Complained about this and was offered some chips which arrived undercooked. No vegan dessert available. The waitresses are very young but in urgent need of training and couldn’t answer any questions about the food. No idea if the gravy was vegan or not so it wasn’t eaten. Used to come quite regularly a while ago but this was a totally different experience. The tables were crammed in with little room. We were also all cold. We won’t be back.

From booking to leaving we had a great experience. Booking: suggested to arrive a little earlier than we originally suggested as there were two large parties already booked in and would be busy - a big tick from me! Mains: Sunday lunches all round. Meat nice lean cuts and plenty of it. Veg, good selection and nicely cooked (not boiled to within an inch of it life!), roasted potatoes and Yorkshire puds all equally nicely cooked. All piping hot - including the gravy!! Puds: All lovely.... particularly the pear and blackberry crumble with custard! Service: polite, prompt, attentive without being in your face. Cost: £25pp for two courses including drinks.... say no more. First Sunday Lunch we've been out for for ages. We weren't disappointed - far from it!

DO NOT GO! Went there yesterday 21/1/24 for a family meal. I can honestly say that it was the worst pub meal that we have experienced in our entire lives! We arrived on time to find no one available to serve us. So we found a suitable table and settled down. 20 minutes later no one had come to take our order. So I had to go to the bar to get someone to organise it. We ordered drinks at the same time and waited for our meals. At this point we had been there over half an hour without drinks. When the meals came (all Sunday roasts) the drinks came a few minutes later. We all ordered the gravy to be separate. When the meal arrived the only item hot where the roast potatoes! The gravy was just off cold, beef had a large amount of gristle round it, Yorkshire pudding cold so very soft etc. I would have called a server over to replace them all but none were around. The ones that did turn up at some points all seemed to be doing their own thing. There seemed to have been no training given to the staff. When we had finished I paid by card and went off to the car. That was in the next but last parking space. We were all in engine running ready to move off when a member of staff came out to tell me the card had not gone through. At least 5 minutes from leaving the bar. So more than enough time to recognise the non payment. We should not have got to the door before being called back. Let alone get to the car ready to move off! We could only see three staff serving the bar and "restaurant." If there was the option I would have given zero stars that's how bad our experience was!

Unfortunately they cannot cater for gluten free. The service was ok, but nothing on the dessert menu could accommodate my husband’s coeliac disease. It really spoilt our meal. Especially since we had phoned ahead of our visit and asked about gluten free options . It’s not difficult to accommodate and is unfair instead of being honest in the first instance. Not to be recommended.

We visited for Sunday dinner and were met with a warm welcome and quickly shown to our table and served drinks. There was no vegetarian option for Sunday dinner but I am happy with vegetables roasties and Yorkshire puddings so ordered this, my husband had chicken. The Yorkshire puddings are huge. However, on paying the bill a plate of vegetables is the same price as a full roast dinner with meat!!! All other pubs and restaurants either have a veggie option (mushroom Wellington, caramelised onion and cheese tart) or reduce the price accordingly, something that could be considered. All in all nice food and pleasant staff.

Visited for lunch - ordered 2 diet cokes fish & chips and scampi and chips. The fish and chips were OK but the scampi was just a plate full of batter. I suspect there was in total a spoonful of scampi on the whole plate - the rest was greasy batter. We told the waitress and she just said "I will feed it back to the kitchen" but looking at past reviews it has obviously been highlighted before

Overall lovely meal, good service, helpful and polite staff. Only criticism is the chicken burgers could have been crispier and with less sauce and relishes/cheese as it was a little overloaded and made the texture a bit too mushy.

I’ve never known a pub be so anti customer. The £5 minimum spend is very outdated so people have to spend more if they don’t have the cash, in this day and age it’s not good enough. The food is genuinely good, but I would say that the obvious revolving door of management is either down to a terrible owner or it really just is that unmanageable. I’ve seen that the online presence seems to fluctuate, which can only be down to changing management. This unfortunately then has an effect on the quality of service from staff… I’ve been in a few times now and during the day there really isn’t any level of warmth to be had, I’d rather sit outside in the wind than have to listen to the chunterings of someone that clearly doesn’t want to be there. I was in one day time and I’d over heard a man shouting at someone for charging their mobile phone. The customer had obviously bought a beer from the bar, so what’s the issue? I was shocked to see it was the landlord that was sat there drinking ale shouting at this customer. Not very professional and highly cantankerous. I’d like to give it more than 2 out of 5, but I genuinely feel like the atmosphere and any ‘good time’ to be had is marred by staff and ownership that really need to know more about customer service. Perhaps one exception when I spoke with one man that was very pleasant. He had long hair tied back and knew how to speak to customers. Shame nobody else can learn from that. Happy to try the place again with it being the only pub in the area. I travel from Manchester to work here once every couple of months, so not totally awful if you’re just swinging by.

I’ve had main meals before and the food is excellent with a very good portion. Today we settled on sandwiches with chips. Delicious. I went for the chargrilled steak in a sourdough roll. It had onions too and triple cooked chips. The steak was perfect and melted in the mouth. The others had BLT or ham salad and they loved them. Add to this that the beer is always good and you can’t go wrong

Used to be so good- what’s happened?! Ate here today with my children and husband. We waited a little while to be greeted but staff were warm and friendly. I was surprised to see it wasn’t as busy as it normally is with lots of tables empty. LWe were taken to a table in the corner and offered drinks quickly. This is where the good service ends. We ordered our food and the waitress came back not long after to apologise that they had run out of fish cakes. Disappointing but it happens so we changed to the peppers on the specials (which were delicious). My feta flatbread looked nothing like the one advertised on their Facebook page but it was ok. The Sunday roasts were average. The vegetarian option is just vegetables and Yorkshire pudding (no meat) but again that was ok. Portion fairly small for the cost. My children had the beef which was fatty but in parts nice. My husbands pork came. We asked for apple sauce and were told they had run out (there is a mini Morrisons a couple of doors away they could have bought some). My husband said that he only likes pork with apple sauce and if they didn’t have any could he switch his meat to lamb. The waitress said she would ask if they could make some apple sauce but came back and said they could change the meal to lamb. The lamb arrived and was unbelievably chewy. It could barely be cut. Nobody came to see if we were enjoying our meals. In fact nobody came again after that. After we had finished our meals we sat and waited, and waited, and waited! We wanted deserts but nobody seemed willing to take our order. Eventually we gave up and walked to the bar. We even contemplated walking out without paying which we have never done before but that was the level of dissatisfaction we felt. We expressed how we felt upon paying and I told the young waitress we had completely been forgotten about and our meals weren’t great. She did apologise and took my husbands meal off the bill but this still came to £91 for two kids meals, two starters, one vegetarian roast and two drinks each (including the two kids and me drinking coke). This was daylight robbery for the level of service and quality of food. If this was my first visit I wouldn’t ever go back. I will add that I have previously had many brilliant meals here hence them getting three stars and not the one I would have rated it based on my meal today alone. The staff are friendly but clearly need a lot of training. We were told they were short staffed but we’re taking walk ins whilst we were there -look after your customers who have booked.

When we did manage to finally order our food it took forever to arrive. We also had a vegan at the party in which there was nothing for her to have even though on the website, it said they catered for vegans. When asking for vegan options, the manager seemed annoyed and unwilling to help. He said he could ‘throw her something together’ and we were shocked when the meal arrived. It turned out to be a bread roll and a handful of chips. They didn’t even offer any condiments! INCLUDING KETCHUP which I thought every pub would have. Food & Waiting Staff were both faultless; delicious meals and professional, friendly and attentive staff. However, our night was somewhat tarnished when we witnessed the manager persistently bully and intimidate a female waitress to the point that she began to cry. It was terrible to see someone being treated this way and we were disgusted by the managers behaviour, who seemed completely unfazed at the discomfort he caused the young women and the customers who witnessed his behaviour. He began by verbally harassing her, walking/standing uncomfortably close to her and, despite her appearing incredibly uneasy, did not stop until she became visibly upset. Hardly the kind of behaviour you would expect to see and for this reason, myself and my friends won’t be returning. My advice to the young lady- get out of there! There’s no excuse for anyone treating anyone this way. Shameful and embarrassing behaviour.

After being highly recommended, my partner and I decided to enioy a nice afternoon lunch date. However, from the first instance it did not look good for this quaint village pub. We asked for a table of 2, which the young barman struggled to find, even though the restaurant was completely empty. We were sat down next to a dirty radiator, which we had decided to overlook. My partner had noticed that his glass was dirty after taking a drink and promptly returned to the bar for a replacement. On being sat down we were given one menu between the two of us, with the barman unsure as to whether that menu was even being served; he took our order anyway without double checking. I had ordered the venison stew (£18) which was accompanied by cold undercooked dumplings, with no check back being made I had to seek a staff member to rectify the problem. The manager soon brought over 2 fresh dumplings, which had clearly been heated in the microwave. The young waiter was like a rabbit in headlights as the restaurant became busier, if he was new, I felt sorry for him as he seemed to have no help from any other staff including the manager. The waiter took our food away before we had finished eating. We asked for the card machine to pay, where he stuttered and didnt bring it over so we got up and went to the bar. Still to this point we had not once been asked how our food was; and so I asked to speak to a manager which was the man taking our payment. I said the food was really not good, his response was, were the dumplings still not great? I replied with no they were simply microwaved... he smiled. I said that we will not be coming back as you clearly are not bothered to which his response was I am bothered I'm just really busy. Not a response from a good manager or one that trains his staff, poorly managed, poorly trained, poor attitude!

When staying with friends in the village, we always eat at the Swan and Cygnet for one night because they serve the best plate steak and ale pie I know. None of this bits of meat in a porcelain bowl with a puff pastry topping that satisfies no one, but a traditional slice of home made pie packed with melt in the mouth steak in a rich crumbly pastry. Good chips and mushy peas make it enjoyable every time. One of our friends had the fish and chips, great fish, good batter, what's not to like? My wife has the goats cheese starter as a main course on thin pickled beetroot which she enjoyed.Real ales and reasonably priced wines, completed the evening. The service was quick and courteous. One of the girls was obviously learning, but we all have to go through that.

We had never been here before and we were extremely pleased with our evening. They were very busy early evening so we couldn't eat until 7pm but it was worth waiting for. Friendly staff, sufficiently attentive without being overbearing and excellent food.

Swan and cygnet used to be my local 10 years ago and usd to love it here. We only moved 2 miles away to Willerby but i missed walking down to this lovely little pub. Unfortunately as time has passed this pub has got worse and worse. The food has moved away from the classic British pub food as more to a bar bistro style menu. No sunday lunch on offer either i believe speaking to the waitress. The land lady wad rude and not inviting we asked to order drinks at the bar and she said just sit down and the waitress will sort you out. The belly pork was tough and chewy clearly undercooked and the steak was ironically tough chewy and over cooked. No thought given when we memtioned this and was promptly brought the bill rather then the dessert menu. Maybe time to re evaluate what you want to be

We booked in for a party of 10 for a birthday event. The pub was moderately busy when we arrived but got busier which seemed as though it could have been a daunting afternoon for the two staff running both the bar and restaurant.

Not really sure what the landladies issue is however I have never met someone more miserable. Completely rude and disrespectful to customers and you would have thought that a lady of her old and tender age (because trust me, she is not young!!) would have better manners. Respect your elders does not apply here as she has no respect for anyone!!!! I think she should really re-evaluate her customer service skills and possibly her life choices :) Just a suggestion.

We were treated to a Mothers' Day lunch by my son and his wife and really enjoyed it. Two of the party had soup for starters, then two had the Yorkshire steak (which looked fabulous and I wished I'd ordered that), one had chicken and two of us had fillet of beef ... and I was pleased I had as it was gorgeous - the beef was beautifully tender to the extent that it almost melted in my mouth. We all really enjoyed it.

Popped in for Lunch and had the steak sandwich with chips, the Steak was quite nice but the overall meal was let down massively by the poor quality of the chips, they tasted like oven chips but were still a little bit uncooked. I think a establishment like this should be able to offer nicer chips. Left feeling rather disappointed.

i went to this pub for a meal which before was quite good. I understand the management has changed, so has the food and servive. i ordered my meeal a sunday roast and after waiting over 40 minutes for it to come had to ask a waitress where it was. She went to find out and all of a sudden came out with it. the veg has nearly raw, you could hardly cut into them and the rest was jusst the same standard. I was never asked if i was enjoying my meal whilst trying to eat it, or when i was given the bill either. They most probably darnt ask. Last time i go there.

I originally come from Grimsby and I have recently moved to Swanland with my partner. My Mum stayed over recently for the first time and she wanted to come here for dinner as she seemed impressed. (When I told her the name of the pub, she said it sounded posh) I had booked a table for 3 and we were seated in the more private dining area to the left when you walk in. All of the staff who served us were polite and professional.

The other evening, my child was absolutely desperate for the toilet so I felt I had no other choice than to send them in with their friends to the pub toilets (bearing in mind that this is our village pub and we have been in there frequently). They were in the toilets for less than a minute before a lady came in and rudely said if they weren’t using the pub “can you get out”. I was shocked when they told me how unbelievably impolite the lady was, my child has been in that pub many times and even recognised some of the staff, they should not have been treated like that and I am outraged at the treatment of them.

Took my wife to the Swan and Cygnet for a meal to celebrate her birthday. The car park was nearly full when we arrived and you could hear the noise from the dining room as we entered the place. We were seated at a table for two a few feet from the loudest people we have ever had the misfortune to be in the same restaurant at the same time. They were a group of four adults and four children and the adults were consuming alcohol as if there was no tomorrow. The noise level was deafening which was a shame as the food was nice although a little overpriced. Very disappointed as this is supposed to be a very select area near Hull. I will not be returning again.

Visited this pub for a catch up with friends, started with a couple of drinks in a busy pub with great atmosphere then moved through to the restaurant. Most tables were taken and we had a lovely round table. There was a great choice of food and a few specials including a venison pudding, which my husband had and really enjoyed. Everyone's food was really good and we left clean plates all round. Desert was equally nice along with a very colourful cheeseboard. Would definitely recommend this pub, wether just drinking or a full blown meal.

Nice location and promising restaurant on entry for a midweek lunch. Surprised to be sat next to a party when there were plenty of vacant tables set for two across the floor. Ambiance & decor were fine; didn't notice background music. A mouth watering choice of interesting pub meals, and a range of ales, although the one I chose was on it's last legs.

We got off to a bad start. We had booked well in advance and were shown to a table in a poor position so I asked if we could sit near the window to be told those were reserved. They were both still empty when we left as were several other better-positioned tables.

Popped in here for an evening meal. The setting is nice and staff are friendly. I had the gammon steak and my partner had the pan roast chicken. Both meals were excellent and could not be faulted. It was busy but there was more than enough staff to stop it feeling manic or overrun. We only popped in after being in the village for something else but have both already agreed that we will go again and try some more of the menu as there were plenty of options to choose from, all of which looked very appetising.
