Sushizen in West Berkshire

We've been here many times and again tonight! The food was a joy and the service and friendliness is outstanding.

We visited on a Friday evening around 8 o clock. The restaurant was very busy with takeaway orders as well as customers dining in. Although the restaurant was understaffed they managed us customers well. As the food was slightly delayed we were offered traditional wine and the chef had even personally made us some incredible food that wasn’t on the menu for the delay. All food ordered was absolutely incredible and can’t wait to visit the restaurant again just maybe during the week so we can spend more time enjoying all the delicious food.

Waited at the table for 20 mins after being seated and still hadn't even been asked about a drinks order. Decided to leave at that point, hence I can't comment on the food, but I won't be returning to find out.

Great lunch today! Had the Unagi Donburi and Spicy Seafood Ramen, they even did the jammy egg. Service is very friendly and thank you to Phriya for her warm welcome ...can't wait to try the other dishes next time! April 2024 - 3rd Visit and better than ever! Deserves more business! Great restaurant with great food

The food was very good and we couldn’t fault any of it. We tried the sushi as well and that was freshly made and absolutely delicious. A little gem in Newbury town centre. Will definitely be back for more!

Ate here with a large party of 12 for my Grandsons birthday. They didn't have gluten free options and said I could only eat fried rice, added chicken. No flavour very disappointed. Other people in our party said the food was good but not as good as other sushi restaurants. We weren't all served at the same time, my granddaughter had finished her meal by the time our meals arrived and 1 person was waiting 10 mins after ours arrived. Toilet area is a bit run down and needs some redecorating.

We had dinner here yesterday with a group of 6. Did not have reservation but got a table right away. Food was pretty good at a reasonable price. Sashimi was fresh with a thick cut. Kid menu has lots of option with very good value. Only downside was that service was a bit slow.

Probably the best sushi I've had in my years living in newbury and a good sized restaurant for larger parties if needed.

Friendly staff and delicious meal which the vegan options were scrumptious, highly recommend.

What a gem. Mr Mo is a delight and a genius with his sushi! We had a fantastic meal, all the food was exceptional quality and beautifully presented. All the staff we excellent. All together a very enjoyable evening. We'll be back! We went back, still amazing.

Had an amazing sushi platter at this restaurant. I am gluten intolerant and they had a specific gluten free platter on the menu, and they brought over gluten free soya sauce for me as well. I am always sceptical of gf soya sauce in a restaurant because some restaurants have got it wrong in the past, but I dared to try it at Sushizen and everything was fine (the sauce had a clear gluten free sticker on top so less likely that someone gets confused.) The sushi was of really good quality, such smooth buttery salmon. And the coconut ice cream mochi to finish was delicious too. Great service so all round 5 stars, thank you for a lovely experience.

Hands down the best restaurant in Newbury. The food and service are absolutely divine. Such a wide range of food including chicken and beef. Nothing is too much trouble. The perfect night out.

Eating here was an emotional experience. I have been dreaming about the food since we left. So annoyed we’ve lived in Newbury 2 years and only just discovered this place. In my view, the single greatest place for food in all of Newbury. Can’t wait to return soon!!

One of the absolute best restaurants in Newbury. The food here is exceptional - from the tempura being some of the lightest, crispest batter we’ve ever tasted, to the sushi being absolutely perfectly and lovingly prepared. The place is clean, cozy and comfortable, and every member of staff was exceptionally friendly and gave us some of the most attentive service we’ve had at a restaurant in a long time. Not only this, but we took a quite fussy 6 year old who is known to be reluctant to try new things… and he was made to feel so at home and happy that he ate more than we’ve seen him do in a long time! We couldn’t recommend sushizen enough - and would be especially good for a nice, special evening for two.

Wow, just gorgeous! The food alone would have made this five stars but the service made it so much more. Our enthusiasm for the outstanding beef tataki led to us getting a little taster of one of the chef's own creations, which was mind-blowingly good. A wee complementary bottle of perfectly warmed sake to finish was the final flourish to an absolutely beautiful feed. I only wish we lived closer!

As a connoisseur, the sashimi, rolls and tataki were excellent for the price. Great to be able to get Hamachi. Chopsticks were properly laid out too (instead of being longitudinal)!

The food is always fresh and full of flavour, quality is superb! We are always treated very well and the chef regularly comes over and offers to create special dishes not on the menu for us to try. It’s nowhere near as busy as it deserves to be!

We thought we would try out Sushizen in Newbury for my daughters birthday. We've been to many restaurant's over the years but for the first time in a longtime we all actually really enjoyed the food, not only was it tasty but plentiful too. The chef also came over with a birthday treat for my daughter which was lovely surprise too. Excellent service & outstanding food, we will be back for the next family birthday !!

Ordered takeaway, chicken teriyaki Donburi. Chicken tasted like pork, virtually no teriyaki sauce. Basically a plate of plain rice with overcooked chicken. Gross and crazy as we paid restaurant prices!

An independent and new restaurant. Mr Mo and the team were incredibly hospitable and keen to ensure our food met everyone’s needs, to the point that a separate platter came for someone with dietary needs. I really hope Sushizen is a great success. We’ll be back

The vegan menu here is very restricted and not hugely inspiring however the sushi we had was well made. The chef and serving staff were friendly and the food came quickly but it did take a little while to get served initially.

Just got back from a lovely meal at Sushizen. Here are the positives: - Mr Mo came and discussed our needs as a table, we had me (carnivore), a vegetarian and 2 vegans. Its very rare when a chef comes and talks to the table, but always very welcome. - Portion sizes are massive. The main courses we had were very tasty and huge, so expect to take doggy bags if having starters. - Extra course for me of sushi in the chefs special sauce; 2 scallops, yellow fin tuna and a healthy portion of salmon for free.. I've never had that anywhere. It was heavenly, unexpected and very much appreciated. - Sake - get on the warm sake, enjoy the food and the company of your foody mates, and give it a try.

Have had dinner quite often and we are super fans of Sushizen. Sushichef, Mr Mo made super delicious sushi and you will never feel bored to find good food on the menu (over 100 items!!). We went there for mum’s birthday today and Mr Mo prepared a beautiful birthday sushi cake and special drink for her!! Omg he was so sweet and that truly surprised all of us.

Great Sushi and other Japanese options. Plenty for the veggies too

This is the second visit as I really enjoyed the first visit. Again service was good, Japanese beer was excellent. Starter was brilliant!! , Now for mains I ordered duck with rice and veg , sorry to say the duck was over cooked, I like my duck pink, when asked if meal was OK I told them duck over cooked? No problem they whisked it away and cooked me another one . That is what you get from a great restaurant not excuses, I will definitely go again . 5 stars .

The food had me in a state of zen… oh wait, was that the wine? Either way what a lovely experience. I would suggest the teriyaki salmon, chicken gyoza and crunchy salmon uramaki roll sushi 🍣 it’s a thumbs up from this local guide. I’m also particularly impressed with the original wall art. It’s 5 stars from me, worth a visit in newbury.

As a family we have visited twice. On both occasions the food has been lovely, the services friendly and the portions generous. My son thought it better than sushi Maki, which is another favorite, but with wider choice on the menu . We will be back

SUCH a good dinner… again… our second time. Wide range of menu (100 items!) then my wife found the vegetarian menu with another 25+ options. Each dish SO well prepared and presented. With sashimi I was pleased to find scallops as an option along with other fish and given the option of ponzu dip for the scallops. Friendly team, happy to flex. Excellent.

Lovely little independent restaurant. We stopped here for lunch. We both had ramen - vegetarian and the spicy seafood with some spring rolls as a starter. The portions were large and delicious. Service was very friendly and attentive. We’ll try the sushi next time.

Absolutely loved the food at SushiZen! Was my first visit here and was massively impressed! The food, the service, just perfect. Mr Mo was a fabulous chef and host! The whole team were amazing! For starters, miso soup (so tasty!), Tempura vegetables and Duck Gyoza. The lovely waitress informed us that there was only 2 duck gyozas left and we could have another flavour Gyoza as well, I went for beef. All of the starters were fabulous! For the mains, I had the dragon sushi roll, blown away, bloody gorgeous! My daughter had salmon sashimi, Mr Mo had kindly given her some other fish sashimi to try as well however she is super picky, he said it was no problem and made her some more salmon sashimi, no issues, just sorted. My friend had Chicken Yakisoba which was equally as delicious! Mr Mo gave us some more salmon to try with a bit of sriracha just after our mains, absolutely lovely! Just little ideas to try next time we go for a meal. For dessert we had the custard pancakes and mochi, coconut and mango. All absolutely delicious! Totally overwhelmed by the generosity by Mr Mo of the little additions and extras. Mr Mo mentioned his special sushi to try next time we visit, that will definitely be on my list! We will most definitely be back again! Hopefully regularly too!! Thank you for a wonderful meal and amazing service!

Simply put: best Japanese food I have ever tasted in this country. Incredibly fresh fish; delicious Katsu curry. The service was beyond super-friendly. This place deserves the amazing rating it has already achieved ❤️

What can I say about this place apart from the fact it's amazing. The food is fantastic, as is the service. You can tell that Mr Mo puts time and care into every plate he makes. He also brings over little things to try based on what you've ordered which adds to the service and feeling that he wants to give you a personalised experience. He really loves the craft and it shows in the whole experience.

This is the 5th time I have come here and it just seems to get better and better. My Wife had the seafood ramen I tasted it we both agreed it was fantastic. I had seared Tuna Tataki, Tuna Sashimi, Tuna Hosomaki (I was in the mood for Tuna) and Vegetable Tempura with some Saki absolutely delicious. My children had Gyoza and various sushi. We loved it. There is one good reason Sushizen has such a high score here and that is because it’s a bloody fantastic restaurant! Service is perfect and Mr Mo is an amazingly personable guy who cares so much about his food! I was never a big sushi fan and always opted for Indian cuisine given the choice but I have to say this place has helped change that. I would have to say every dish that comes to the table is a piece of artwork and the taste is just incredible! I hope they survive in the location that seems a little quiet at times but with their attention to detail and super sushi skills, I think they will and they 100% deserve to. I did plan to take a pic of the chicken katsu curry but it looked so good, I completely forgot and started eating it!

Wonderful food and brilliant service! All fresh and delicious for a very reasonable price. I’m not a sushi lover and I normally eat only vegan or vegetarian dish (their vegan curry is the best curry even eaten in UK) but my family members are big sushi and meat eaters and they absolutely enjoyed each dish what we had there. I had dinner here a few weeks ago with my husband and baby. The service was great, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. They couldn’t do more to make us feel welcomed and even gave us complimentary soups for both of us and baby friendly veg for baby. I would definitely recommend this place to friends and family. Prices are good for what you get. Will be returning in the near future.
