Decided to treat myself (2nd week of August), got dressed, headed over, found it closed! No info on their Google / Maps entry, nor on their Facebook page, which hasn't been updated for over two years. No answerphone message either. Very unprofessional! Particularly disappointing, as the sushi and sashimi here are very good, as are many of the side dishes. Unfortunately the cooked menu, which used to be really good (I know what I'm talking about, having lived in Japan for four years), is gradually shrinking away to almost nothing. Japanese people used to cross London to eat here years ago, but no longer... 😕

We have booked the table at the beginning of April. I booked the table because it was my husband's birthday, so we wanted to try the Japanese restaurant. We have arrived the restaurant at 6:45pm, when we finished made the order, the waiter told us that we have to wait around 20 minutes. However, after half an hour later, our food still hasn't come yet. So I double check with the waiter about it. Then the manager came to me and said that we have to wait another 20 minutes because there were quite a lot of orders. Her answers made us very surprised and shocked!! Since we have been waiting for 30 minutes and we have to wait another 20 minutes, so total I need to wait 50 minutes ?? It was really ridiculous and unacceptable !! At that moment, I can see that the restaurant only around 3 to 4 tables occupied, it was not a full house, I don't know why they can't manage it. Probably they have missed our orders. I really feel disappointed and angry.

When we walked into the restaurant, I saw a Japanese sushi master behind the sushi counter so that’s a good sign of authenticity. Menu is not the cheapest you can find, but to me it’s affordable. Tuna sushi set - not a huge portion so maybe for men it’s not enough. Nicely made and presented sushi (I’ve seen many look like being made by an amateur). Sushi rice seasoning just right. Tempura bento - that’s good amount of food. Nicely presented too. Also nice surprise to see the hijiki seaweed side dish in the bento, which is not often seen in the Japanese restaurants in the country. And it’s one of my fav. We were only the second table of customers there but food was a bit wait (about half an hour). Salad that comes with the lunch set was fresh. And the staff was so caring that she suggested changing the wasabi salad dressing to sesame dressing as we have children. I would rather pay a bit more to eat here than go for the cheaper (while not truly cheap!) sushi.

It's been quite a while since my wife and I have been to this classy Japanese restaurant, and I won't leave it so long next time. We hadn't booked Saturday evening but we took a chance. No problem at all and what a wonderful welcome. The food here is as good as anywhere you will find in London, including mush posher areas than Willesden Green (although it is getting a bit posher; Gail's etc). Yellow tail meaty fish (not too bony), soft shell crab, Wagyu beef; California roll, eel Nigiri all delicious and beautifully prepared. So why only 4 stars and not 5? It's because of tissue napkins instead of proper cloth ones, which a high-end restaurant should provide whatever the washing costs. Is this important for me? Yes it is, but maybe it's my age (63) and what I'm used to. But really a fabulous restaurant

After living in Japan for two years we do miss the delicious affordable food. Unfortunately the choices in the Midlands are rather limited to Yo Sushi and a few independents, none of which are actually run by Japanese. We had a sushi craving and decided to drive down to London for the weekend and try this place after reading the rave reviews. The location is very unassuming with lots of cheap take away places nearby. The interior is very tasteful and authentically Japanese with a counter as you enter and even a tatami table at the far end. On a Saturday afternoon we were able to get a table without any problems although we had reserved just in case. We both ordered the sushi set menu with soup and starter. The portions were a bit small, so we ordered 3 more nigiri sushis each which were a bit more copious than what was included. The clear soup and sort of oden starter were very authentic but the wasabi was quite overpowering. Nothing like the fragrant freshly grated wasabi you get in high quality sushi restaurants in Japan. For dessert we had some sesame and green tea ice cream. A tasty treat at the end of our meal. Overall we were very happy to have found this slice of Japan not too far away from our new home. The main drawback would be the value for money since we spent 95GBP for lunch for two including a 5GBP tip. The waitresses do explicitly mention that gratuity is not included, which is very non-Japanese or even something I've encountered elsewhere, but service was good and attentive. We don't mind splurging for good quality Japanese food, but for this price I would expect something truly exceptional. We might try some of the cooked dishes next time. This is the best sushi restaurant we've found so far, although there is still room for improvement. A similar quality but more affordable restaurant just outside Paris would be Sushi Ken in Issy les Moulineaux.

My wife and I embarked on the trip of a lifetime in Japan this year, and hit euphoric culinary highs in various parts of the Honshu island. However, it did make us believe we would struggle to tolerate the majority of Japanese restaurants in london! Sushi Say was a very pleasing surprise, and rewards those who venture a little further north on the Jubilee line. The staff were warm, welcoming and informal and highly knowledgable about the menu. We started with Chu Toro and Hotate sashimi and the choicest cuts of fish were served even though the raw scallops were not actually on the menu. The selection, of course, is more varied than a true sushi specialist restaurant in Japan but that works well in london, and allowed us to recommend the extremely well priced Black Cod to our local friends.Tempura in a delicate batter, and a mouthwatering Unagi Don (which again was an off menu choice) were both filling and exquisitely flavoured. I would not hesitate to recommend Sushi Say to the most discerning of diners. Excellent.

We have just moved to Willesden Green. We love Japanese food so we were delighted to see a Japanese restaurant near our place and went there for lunch. We paid £29 for a katsudon, a salmon teriyaki, a bowl of rice and a portion of agedashi tofu. The portions were small, and the quality very average. My girlfriend and have been eating Japanese food regularly for 20 years. Considering the quality of the food and the sizes of the portions, I would have expected to pay half the price at most. What made the experience even worse was the waitress. She was either extremely rude or has zero education. When I gave my debit card to pay the bill, she told me very loudly "excuse-me, tip is not included". I knew it was not included as it was written on the bill. I just replied "ok", as in "ok, I hear you". She said again, very loudly "excuse-me, will you add tip to the debit card or do you want to leave cash?" I then got really annoyed. I really dislike it when a restaurant tries to force you to leave a tip. Nothing was special, the food was very average, it is very expensive, the portions are small, we sat 30 min at most to eat our lunch and just left. I ended up leaving £2 tip because of my girlfriend. If i had been there on my own, I would have left zero tip because of the waitress' attitude. I for sure will not go back there. I would rather take the tube and travel a bit further for a better Japanese restaurant (and better waiters/waitresses).

One of the drawbacks of eating alone is that you can't sample as many things. I found Sushi-Say through Google Maps and TripAdvisor reviews, and the reviews are right - this is a great sushi restaurant run by a husband and wife. Most of the servers are from Japan or are Japanese from Korea. There are couples of all persuasions in the Borough of Brent and this restaurant - they know a good thing.I settled on the Chirashi Toku (there is a less expensive Chirashi Jo). I figure Chirashi gives a restaurant free reign to show me what they have. I also ordered one piece of Unagi, just because I like it and wanted to see how nigiri is presented.I have to say that I started out with a couple of negatives - They use fake (surimi) crab, which is very obvious (I would rather they just leave this out), and the tomago is definitely not Shiro-quality.There are many more pluses, however. Very good ginger, and freshly grated wasabi. Fresh shiso leaf. The only Chirashi I've had that included unagi as part of the dish. Some of the freshest mackarel, fatty tuna, salmon, that that I've had. Fresh/raw ebi. Overall a very nice dish. I wish I could have tried some of the other restaurant offerings. Looking at the other tables, tempura looked good, and the nigiri looked great.Great, attentive service. English is a second language for everyone I spoke with. Order the tea by the pot (they also sell the loose leaf in 100g bags); it's worth it.Well worth finding off the beaten path.

And the answer was that the itamae (the sushi chef, her husband) has a long-standing contact in the East End of London who had supplied the restaurant with fish for years. "That contact knows enough not to ever dare to provide anything but the best," she said. And it's true. I have never had any morsel of food at Sushi-Say that smacks of anything but grade A quality. I have been here for lunch on my own, for dinner with my partner, with friends who had never eaten Japanese food before, when I wanted to celebrate and when I was exhausted and down. Each time, the pleasure of the food and its presentation and the service became something more than just satiety. It was sheer joy. This husband-wife team, a local institution, care deeply about what they do. The staff are all Japanese, not all of them completely fluent in English, but all very attentive. I once dropped a chopstick and before it hit ground, one of them had another set of fresh ones in my hand. For a special occasion, try the chef's sashimi. The itamae chooses whatever he deems best on the day. Wow, I never knew a scallop could have so many subtle layers of taste. There are specials (oyster in ponzu sauce, white fish tempura, etc) that change every week or so. And of course, besides sushi, there is excellent yakitori, sobu, katsu, green tea ice cream and more. Can't say the restaurant is cheap -- you can't produce such quality on a thin budget -- but it isn't expensive and you get good value for money. It's definitely a local favourite and has a good reputation among London foodies everywhere for being the real deal.It will take you 30 minutes by tube from say Oxford Street or London Bridge (door to door). So you could combine a visit to Sushi Say with some other stops to get a taste of life in leafy NW2 NW6 NW10. Check what's on at the Tricycle Theatre, go across the street to the Grade II listed Black Lion pub. Queens Park is fab esp. for kids. Also nearby, Kensal Green Cemetery, the resting place of loads of famous people you never heard of. G. K. Chesterton wrote in his poem "The Rolling English Road": "For there is good news yet to hear and fine things to be seen; Before we go to Paradise by way of Kensal Green."And one of those fine things is Sushi Say.

Just discovered this place. Great nori and sashimi. Other authentic dishes that I'm going to have fun working my way through. Enjoyed the sake, served in clever glass carafes to keep it cool. Lovely homely family run atmosphere too.

I have been coming here with my family on special occasions for years - it never disappoints. The fish is incredibly fresh, immaculately presented and the menu authentically Japanese. The reviews below complaining about prices and making ridiculous comparisons to million-pound funded projects like Hakasan and Roka need a reality check. This is a family run business that has consistently produced some of the best sushi in London (and thus the UK) for nearly two decades. The prices reflect two things: firstly, the fact that only the highest quality ingredients are used. Secondly, the beautifully understated interior is set in a very small space - the covers are limited per night, and the nature of this type of restaurant means that turnover on tables is slow - everything (sushi wise) is prepared fresh to order. The sushi chef prior to opening this restaurant with his wife used to be the personal chef of the Rockerfeller family - this should give you a rough idea as to just how good he is. The location isn't the West End, and yes you do pay through the nose - but sushi is one of those things that should be done properly - saving a place like this for celebrations is totally worth it.

I have been coming to Sushi-Say for about two years now and I have never been disappointed. Sure, there are cheaper sushi restaurants in London, but I have not had better. The place is small and therefore always fully booked. Walk-in business does not have a chance, so make sure you have a reservation. The high quality of the fish used has never changed, nor has the sushi chef or the floor manager. I think the best way to describe their menu: Authentic. Something that has stood out from my last reservation was the service I received prior to visiting the restaurant. I was called by the restaurant to confirm my reservation (as per usual), but on this occasion the caller ALSO reminded me that the Jubilee Line would be closed that day. Great service from start to finish and fantastic sushi! Definitely my favourite Sushi Restaurant in London.FYI: They don’t accept Amex.

This might be one of the best places to eat seriously good sushi in London. Their location is not premium, their raw material is. The interior of this place is somehow very Japanese. There is a sushi counter at the entrance, and some tables at the back. The tables are a bit too close to each other, but it is not too bad. The size of the table is adeccuate, so there is no problem to order many dishes at once. The decor is simple similar to some good sushi bars in Ginza/Tsukiji. The start of the day is their o-toro, seriously good. best in London and better than in some places in Japan. the cut is thick and long. It was that good that I order a 2nd portion! Razor clam, yellow tail, sea bream, turbot... excellent, surf clam was the weakest link. Also, negi toro and salmon/avocado maki was good. The service was perfect, not intrusive but attentive. The staff speak English and Japanese so there is no "lost in translation" moments. The toilet was clean. The bill came with no surprises. They do not charger for the service (very Japanese). It is no cheap, but for the quality of the food in London, it is great value. It seems they have a good number of regular customers (Japanese and non Japanese). Would I come back? YesWhat I will try next time? O-toro again to see if this was a one off or the real deal. Recommendable? Yes, ok for all groups, but I will recommend this for friends only that know what they are up to or to introduce them to great raw fish.

Let me preface this review by saying - I love Japanese food. I could eat it every day. In fact some weeks I have sushi 4 or 5 times. I like sushi from super expensive (Nobu, Uma, )down through to reasonable (k10, Atari ta) so maybe I'm set in my ways ? I can't stand Wasabi ( the chain) nor Yo Sushi. And only Sushi Say. There's nothing actual wrong with it ( apart from the price) but at £34.50 for set sushi menu there is nothing right. The starter was a dull green veg roll in a sugary sauce. Followed by 5 or 6 boilled but artistically arrange pieces of vegetable. A measly 1 skewer of chicken Teriyaki , followed by soup and a few pieces of bland sushi. This same meal would be £11 at atari us lunch and of much better quality . The staff were very good, just the food was bland and expensive £190 for 4 with 2 glass of house wine and 3 beers!!! We left feeling ripped off

To me, this restaurant serves the very best traditional Japanese food in London and possibly in the UK. If you are expecting new fandangle Nobuesque fusion cuisine, you won't find it here. The owner and sushi chef can be seen at the sushi counter and his wife works as front of house to ensure the maintenance of a very high standard of service in the restaurant all the staff are Japanese speaking. The food and particularly the quality of the sushi has been consistently excellent over many years. I would judge over 70% of the diners are regular clients.Willesden Green may be off the beaten track, but I urge you to make the journey. The restaurant is 2 minutes walk from the tube station and once you have been there, you'll want to keep coming back.

Whenever I am in London, I try to eat at Sushi-Say. The food is excellent and beautifully served. This is not only a sushi restaurant, and the other main courses are also excellent. This time we took a set menu, and had all sorts of appetisers, then the main course, in my case a beautifully done beef, already sliced, and served exactly as I asked for (medium rare). Dessert was fresh fruit. I have had their sushi on other occasions, and they are really delicious. This is not a cheap place, but very tasty. Note that the restaurant is closed on Monday and Tuesday, and on the other week days only opens at 18:30.

We have tried many Sushi restaurants, but keep coming back to Sushi Say. It is a serious no frills restaurant. It delivers what it promises and no fancy fusions or twists. This is good old fashioned Japanese food and is totally reliable to deliver the most delicious Sushi or tempura to a faultless standard time and time again. No soft music needed, just gentle talking by happy clientele and they do not try and make money by selling you expensive drinks. Totally honest and charming owners, who work there themselves, perhaps this is why it is so consistently outstanding. Don't be put off by it's location in Willesden Green.

The food here is great (hence my title!) The place feels really authentically Japanese, we've been a few times and we keep going back. Good for couples and families (they have a nice lil cosey semi-private area at the back). The atmosphere is quite formal, and could be friendlier, and the service is firm but friendly. All in all this adds to the authentic feel, it certainly does not feel 'forced.' It is pretty pricey, and quite small, but all in all recommended! PS I don't think they open on Mondays.

This is definitely the best sushi I had so far. It is way better than any other Japanese restaurant I've tried and it's not expensive at all if compared to what other sushi places sell. We heard about this restaurant in TimeOut and thought we'd check it out as we love sushi. We ordered (what we thought was a lot of food) and then waited for it to arrive. The spicy tuna arrived and was incredible. Really tasty. Then the Sashimi variety came out, and again, was beautifully sourced and tasted good. Excellent fish.We ordered a few other items, including the black cod and everything we had tasted really nice. You could tell this restaurant is of exceptional quality. The main issue we had was with the manager. She is clearly run off her feet as she saw us to our table whilst on the phone to other customers and we had to wait about 10 minutes before our drinks order was taken. It seems as though all she cared about was how much money the restaurant was making that night because as soon as we finished our meal she kept coming over to ask if we wanted more. After telling her 3 times that we didn't want anything else we asked for the bill. We were having a nice conversation so left the bill to one side whilst we chatted and finished our drinks - then she came over and asked us to leave as there were other customers waiting for the table. Although she was very apologetic and seemingly 'embarrassed', this is not the way to treat customers. We felt like we were being turfed out as we weren't buying anything else and shuttled through like on a typical sushi conveyor belt. I fully understand that a successful restaurant needs to turn over tables efficiently but there are ways for going about this and unfortunately Sushi Say have got this concept completely wrong. We spent £63 on a meal for 2 people with no wine - just tea - and left hungry. Although the food was excellent - the service was impersonal and we felt the food did not justify the high price tag. We will not be going back.

Nice little restaurant serving a solid mix of food. I'd read a lot of very hyped reviews so had to check it out as I live nearby. I wonder if their prices have jumped a lot after these stellar reviews as it was desperately expensive. £75 for two people with no drinks seemed excessive and certainly detracted from what was a good meal.- Soft shell crab tempura was fine but a minute serving for £11.60- all the sushi we had was great but overpriced - Spicy cooked tuna was an interesting and very tasty starter. Don't get me wrong, they're serving very good food but I'd never recommend it as there are places in London doing very similar food at much cheaper prices. Also somewhat curious that the bill was just a piece of paper with the amount on it, no list of what we'd ordered in sight. P.s i'm more than willing to pay big prices for exceptional food but I just don't think these prices were justified.

Have been holding off for ages before writing this review for two reasons. Firstly I wanted to check the consistency of the quality being produced and secondly, it is one of these restaurants that I don't really want to share with others as it is like a little personal diamond eatery I want to keep to myself and hard enough as it is to make a reservation without further increasing the popularity. When you visit the premises, you will know what I am on about. So have been here about five times and the sushi has been bang on every time. Each time it has been the same fella behind the bar and can only be assumed as the owner taking personal responsibility. I have been eating Sushi in London for over 30 years and this is quite simply one of the best in not the best. The preparation, quality and quantity of rice used is perfect, Fish is generously portioned and beautifully cut. The wasabi proportion is spot on and they tend not provide any extra wasabi for anyone as they believe they have the perfect balance of taste. No fancy western infused mixed rolls or any of that rubbish, here you just eat the pure and classic sushi prepared to perfection. The hot assortment of food is good and reasonable but nothing outstanding like their Sushi.

Have just moved into the area and am so happy to have found this little gem. Weekends are mostly fully booked so you have to call in advance to avoid disappointment. However it is worth the effort as the food is fantastic. Having lived in Japan for almost 2 years, I have to say that this restaurant is head and shoulders above almost all but the very best Japanese restaurants in the UK. The quality and freshness of the food is top notch. The only downside is that it is bordering on the expensive side, but it is worth it as a local treat.

Visited for dinner with my boyfriend recently, as we live close by and had been meaning to check it out based on all the glowing reviews. Overall: the service was very friendly and efficient, the setting simple yet nice and the food was tasty - however, we couldn't justify the price. We had edamame beans and pork dumplings for entree, and a mixed nigiri sushi and tempura vegetables (which was delicious!) for mains. We found the serving sizings quite average - I was still hungry afterwards and tempted to order another small meal, but resisted as we had already racked up £60 including a drink each. We had nothing bad to say about the experience in general, were it not for the price we would have been very satisfied. Perhaps quality Japanese restaurants are scarce and those seeking something authentic would be enticed to visit again, but for £30 each we would prefer something else. (On a side note - they did have set menus ranging from £25 upwards which we initially thought were too expensive, but seeing as we essentially spent that anyways perhaps these would have been better value.)
