We werden aangetrokken door de Michelin vermelding maar moesten het helaas op zondag doen met een traditionele pub bar kaart. Financieel is dit opgelost maar toch had dit duidelijk op de website vermeld moeten worden. Verder voldeed de accommodatie aan de wensen en is het plaatsje een bezoek waard.

Great friendly service, excellent food & good sized portions. We both chose Haddock, chunky wedges & crushed minted garden peas. Absolutely delicious & at a reasonable price. Have eaten here many times, highly recommended.

Small menu. But everything was excellent. Service really good, excellent selection of drinks and wines. Definitely worth a visit. Very dog friendly.

Our meal here was very reasonable and to say the star rating, so was the price. Alas there was zero atmosphere in the establishment, the landlord could certainly not be classed as 'mine host'. When we eat out we like to enjoy the whole experience, we like to be chatted to 🤷

We had a meal here on a Thursday evening whilst staying at The Sun Inn. Lovely, cosy country pub atmosphere with a log burner. We felt very relaxed and the staff were polite and gave us enough time to finish our food, checking in with us to ensure everything was okay. I had the smoked potato to start and the braised featherblade for main with a side of broccoli. My partner had mackerel to start and beer battered haddock for main. We shared a chocolate mess for dessert as we were so full but really wanted to try a dessert. The food was exceptional. The meat was so tender it just fell apart and the fish was covered in a light, crispy batter. There was more than enough food and we felt bad leaving some chunky chips but we were just so full. The starters and mains went so well together. One of the most enjoyable meals I've ever had. There is a 10% tip added automatically to the bill which you can ask to be removed however, the service and standard is well worth 10%.

The food was absolutely delicious -freshly cooked and presented beautifully. I had sausage and mash -the sausages were amazing! Served with plenty of homemade gravy too. My aunt really enjoyed her fish pie. We will definitely come back here! The service was also excellent-lovely polite young barman and waiting on staff.

We have had previous good experience of this hotel, but this last time was dissappointing. The soup was good, but the accompanying bread was stale. The haddock goujon batter was soft and the deep fried brie was only warm. It was not good value for money either.

We had a warm welcome at Sun Inn and our rooms were clean, comfortable and spacious. The food and service at dinners and breakfasts were fantastic. Kirkby Lonsdale has a great history, shops and eateries and was a convenient base for local days out. We'll be back!

Very mediocre. Disappointed with the meal. Very little choice. I was tempted to leave but decided to stay and give it a go. I ordered gnocchi and there were literally 5 pieces of gnocchi presented pretentiously. Unfortunately didn’t even taste extraordinary. The duck was also nothing to write home about. Won’t be returning!

We had an evening meal here as part of our stay at the hotel. It was nice and service was good although quite expensive. Very dog friendly as well. I was a little disappointed with the main - it was on the small side and the gooseberry sauce didn’t go well with duck. It would’ve gone better with pork. The wine was really good but wasn’t much choice for under £30 a bottle.

Great lunch, but on paying the bill asked if the particular young man that had served us would get the tip. I was assured by the owner that he would. On reviewing the bill I noted the hotel got all the monies paid including the tip, as it stated gratuities nil. Suffice to say I was not pleased.

We visited Kirkby Lonsdale for a short break in July when we came across the Sun inn. It was located a short distance from our holiday accommodation so easy to access but too easy to linger! The warm welcome and attentive service was brilliant. A happy group of people all too willing to ensure we had a great time. On our first visit we just had drinks in the bar near the warm fire. There was a great choice of local beer with one actually brewed in the town, I tried them all and must give a top rating for the quality. There was a large and varied selection of gin and the selection of wines was also very good. On our second visit we dined in the restaurant which was tastefully decorated and relaxing. The quality of the food which included, starters of poached pollock, ham hock terrrine then our mains consisted of braised Featherblade and salt aged duck breast, all well-presented, tasty and plentiful. Thankfully we saved just enough room for pudding-homemade sticky toffee pudding for me and a chocolate delice with strawberry parfait and strawberry sorbet - delicious!. We visited several other pubs during our stay including the Royal Barn, home of Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery, all were busy with a good atmosphere. We will return later in the year and given our experience at the Sun we will no doubt try their accommodation which we were told was full during our visit.

Happy, friendly and engaging staff are essential for any business in the hospitality sector. The Sun Inn has that in abundance. Rooms were clean , full of character and had everything we could need, including an excellent nights sleep. The breakfast and evening meal were excellent. All freshly prepared and served in the dog friendly area of the restaurant. Our pooches loved it too. Thank you for a perfect break.

Great dining experience. Super friendly staff and a great atmosphere. We went for the Roast Beef Sunday meal and was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. Washed down with a bottle of house red that I think a little overpriced at £25 but didn’t spoil our enjoyment from a great night at the Sun. Look forward to our next visit

Simply shocked and disappointed in how rude and inhospitable the bar staff were here. One to avoid. Shame as the other pubs in the village are more than welcoming, The idea of customer service has obviously bypassed The Sun. We had considered booking a meal here. If this is the standard of service, I will put it down as a lucky escape.

Extremely disappointing Called in at the end of lunch service, lovely two young ladies serving- only ones that knew what they were doing! Fish & chips- too much batter and very ordinary Cheese board -£14 for 4 tiny nice cheeses served bizarrely with a huge chunk of brown sourdough and a nasty cracker, no fruit, no selection of crackers, no butter. Worst cheeseboard ever (let’s face it a cheese board isn’t difficult) apparently the chef makes the cracker- he should stop! Left waiting for ages with no service. So utterly disappointed. Not worth the money! 1/10

We spent a lovely day in Kirkby Lonsdale a absolute treasure, started with a wintry walk then into the town all decorated with Christmas trees and so welcoming. On to the Sun Inn for lunch 6 of us, we had booked which I would recommend, as it was busy, two fires burning and doing their best , we took a selection from the the Sunday menu and the lunch menu, all our meals were delicious , plentiful and prepared with care. I have seen a few comments here and am happy to confirm we were served real roast potatoes with our beef and Turkey mains. We felt very welcome even our 2 dogs received treats. All in all Kirkby Lonsdale was so perfect for a December day out and The Sun did themselves proud, we will be back soon.

Never again... how did they get their rating ?? We had reserved a table and shown to a table located in the centre of the bar area. It was very cool in there - no radiators on. Towards the end of our meal, they lit the fire but the heat didn't reach us in time.. then the fire went out ! The fish cake was just a ball with a little sauce on top.. so poorly presented and dull. Our other starter was a goats cheese and red onion tart. This was equally poorly presented and consisted of a piece of puff pastry with a little cheese and pieces of onion. Some greenery had been put on top in an effort to disguise the fact that it was overcooked and burnt... dreadful.. sent it back. The bream was fine.. fresh, a tad overcooked but still a decent plate of food. The featherblade was very dry, hard and unpleasant and nothing like the description or picture. Sticky toffee pudding followed.. just a slab of cake stuck in a bowl with some sauce and a very small ball of ice cream. What happened to pride in sending out a meal which has been cooked well and care has been taken with presentation ?? After all, shouldn't food look appetising. Perhaps it was the chef's day off !! We felt that it was money wasted and that's not a good feeling.

Following Covid guidelines. Contact details taken, hand sanitiser etc. Drinks orders taken at your table. Screens at the end of each table. Lovely and clean in all areas. We are returning for dinner next week, so I’ll review the food then.

The prices are Resturant but the surroundings are cafe. Positive: we both ordered steak and chips, served with onion rings and pepper sauce. The food was red hot, really nice sauce and the steaks were perfectly cooked. Negative: I had a terrible price of steak which apart from a very small corner was inedible. I couldn’t cut it let alone chew it - it should never have left the kitchen. The 3 staff on duty were useless. They took our order then were not seen again until the food came out. Then not seen again until taking the plates away - if you want another drink you’ve had it! I barely touched my plate but no apology at all, just “I’ll take it off”. Then returned and put the bill on the table (not on a plate) and all she said was “I’ve took it off”. That was it! We waited for her to come back for payment - and waited, and waited. In the end we got the cash together and left it on the table with the bill. In summary I think they have a decent chef (although that steak should not have been accepted from the butcher) but the rest of the staff are useless. They are ineffective and could not care less. Never again

Overrated. Male staff are friendly. Others not so much. The decor is tired. The food is average. Furniture worn. Over priced food. Nothing special. Disappointed, wouldn’t eat there again. Far nicer places in Kirkby Lonsdale

The restaurant was well Covid proofed- some table with plex sheets. The herring starter was nice, if a small portion. I enjoyed the braised lamb, very tasty. However, it came with a load of pickled onions on the plate- that was not mentioned in the menu either. The problem was not a big one, though, as they can easily put aside. Just be aware that the drinks may cost more than the food.

We had a great evening meal and breakfast here. The food was superb - quality local ingredients beautifully prepared - and the COVID safety measures were fully and thoughtfully carried out. We felt perfectly safe eating here and intend to return often in the future

We have stayed at The Sun Inn several times before and we were pleased to be able to return to celebrate a significant anniversary there last weekend. Covid safety and hygiene measures are all in place, but sadly, this means some features are not now possible. Breakfast does not now include the lovely smoothies, fruit salad or compote unfortunately. Covid has meant that, for practical reasons in kitchens everywhere, choices are limited but we still had a delightful meal in the restaurant. Our room, number 10, had a very luxurious bathroom and all the lovely toiletries are still in place. The sleeping area was quite small so we would probably choose a different room next time. This is a very popular place so wise to book ahead.

Really looked forward to a lovely meal based on the reviews, but unfortunately the welcome and staff member that served us really let the experience down. The food was of a good standard, aside from the children's meals - our kids eat real food and the pasta dish that was presented was bland, and tasteless.The place lacks atmosphere compared to other venues that we dined in during our stay, and sadly, there was no chat from the waiter, had to ask twice for the bottle of wine we'd ordered to be brought over - glasses and the bottle were eventually dumped on the table, not poured for us and they just didn't seem to want us there. Not sure if it's because we had children with us (early evening) but they are well behaved and caused no issues.Didn't bother ordering dessert (not that we were offered menus) and in the end went back to our hotel, Plato's, just along the street, and enjoyed dessert in the welcoming environment with the chatty staff.Luckily, we called in during the afternoon to check the place out in advance,and found out we were booked in 45 minutes earlier than told over the phone when we made the reservation - wished we could have found an alternative and not wasted our money!Other things we could say, however, don't wish to be completely negative, but sadly wouldn't return.

Beautifully situated in the centre of Kirkby Lonsdale - and you can easily wander out to the medieval St Mary's Church, and on to the wonderful Ruskin's View.The Covid precautions were very good, and the food from the shortened menu excellent. Especially good value given "Eat out to help out".

We dined from the three course prix fixe menu following the recent reopening opening of the restaurant. Excellent value for money however, I found both my starter and main course a tad under-seasoned. I found myself adding salt to each course in order to bring out the flavours. Wonderfully presented and excellent customer service both before and during our visit. Would return.

We had a delicious evening meal with friends, their dog was also made welcome. The food portions were adequate and yet filling. My first course, Onion soup, mains, Duck and Bardolino Wine made for a nice evening.

Really lovely lunch here. Fish finger sandwich was excellent as was the service and atmosphere. Only small gripe is that I really fancied the fish and chips but totally riled me that if you want peas with them you have to pay extra. Surely fish chips and peas is a normal meal. Why I’m earth would anyone pay £3 extra for peas !!!!

We can't thank The Sun Inn enough for squeezing us in for a meal after we were really let down at the last minute by number 9 restaurant across the road. The staff are very friendly and attentive, food was excellent and the wine is always good quality. I love the atmosphere in this pub and they are dog friendly which is always a bonus for me. Very good ambience in the relaxed bar area including choice of 4 hand pulled beers. Meal marred because the pork belly was served without crackling to our disappointment. Not mentioned on the menu so couldn't complain. Otherwise well served in a timely manner.

My husband & I stayed in Kirby Lonsdale for the weekend & booked our Sunday Lunch at The Sun Inn... it really was a fabulous tasty lunch & the waiter recommended which red wine was going to be nice to go with my lamb. So wanted to overlook the sequence of events that took the edge off what could have been 5*. The terrine for openers was good, better than it looked. The roast beef entrée was perfect & desserts attractive & tasty. The place was v busy but 20+ mins for a pint & a bottle of water is unacceptable. Especially arriving at table after starters, and without the water ! One large glass of wine ordered, served 175ml charged 250ml.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed this visit. Pleasant atmosphere, friendly attentive staff, nice pub and dining area. The food was nice, too but £18 plus for 2 tiny (yes TINY) pieces of venison represents poor value for money choose how imaginative the recipes. Almost all meals came without side dishes so a couple of portions of veg added nearly £8. I'd have accepted a little less flare and a bit more substance but that's just me. Or maybe not?

After reading other reviews felt let down. The staff were friendly but unorganised. Starters were good but the main course steak was a major disappointment , tasteless and lacking any caramelisation.

We were in Kirby Lonsdale, first time there and after visiting a lo5 of lovely shops we needed a coffee. We asked a passerby where we could get a nice coffee she recommended The Sun Inn. We weren’t disappointed, coffee lovely and hot with hot milk, my husband decided to have a pint of beer, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Lovely atmosphere would maybe stay there on our next visit.

Turned up late but still managed to fit us in. Smallish menu but the quality of what was on offer was exceptional. Very good service and reasonably priced.

We was told to visit The Sun Inn to try the TRIPLE COOKED CHIPS, we booked a meal 3 couples, we given the restaurant menu, I asked for special's board - no, menu very limited, we ordered the crab starter - I didn't put a photo on as I was absolutely discussed, it was £8 - a little bit of crab with radish, sorry but couldn't taste crab, then ordered 4 steaks @ £ 22.95 each with so called triple cooked chips - NOT, we told the waitress that these are not the famous chips! Nothing happened, £230 for 6 meals 1 bottle of red & 1 bottle white, not for complaining but definitely will not go again, not worth the money

Never actually eaten here, but it is a great place for a drink. The staff are usually very friendly and if you have a dog they have dog biscuits! We really must call for a meal!!

A decent Sunday lunch but not as good as I had hoped. Fourth time visiting the areas and always wanted to try the Sun Inn, but left slightly disappointed. Sunday lunch was decent, but beef was extremely rare, bloody even. Vegetables were underdone (and I like mine crunchy!) and potatoes were dry. The most off putting thing was the introduction of an onion/curry flavoured puree to the dinner.

Sunday lunchtime and after a rude reception at a nearby restaurant we were not confident. How wrong we were. They fitted us all in despite no reservation and could not have been friendlier or helpful. We had a light lunch but all were excellent - fish goujons were crisp and fresh with a lovely homemade tartar sauce, salads were all delicious; the Caesar salad came with anchovies. Service throughout was faultless, a good range of beers and wines, and friendly staff. The menus were sensibly a choice of traditional Sunday dinners, or a range of 'light bites'. All looked excellent.

We visited twice during our short stay in Kirkby Lonsdale. On our first night we discovered the Sun inn and we just knew this would be our new found favourite place of our trip. A warm welcome, friendly and knowledgable staff and great food. On our first night we took Fish & Chips in the cosy bar washed down with some excellent local ale and a great choice of wines by the glass. Our second visit to Kirkby on Friday night was a lively affair with musicians playing in around the town square,it was a Irish music festival being hosted in the town. We dined at the Sun inn once again in the relaxed atmosphere in the Restaurant and chose from the faboulos a la carte menu - What a chef, delicious creative food all at very reasonable prices. We will be back very soon, Kirkby Lonsdale is a lovely small town lots of boutique style shops, plenty to see and do and every one is so warm and welcoming. whilst we did not stay at the Sun this time we will definitely stay there on our next trip.

Usually Tripadvisor is pretty accurate when it comes to scoring places to eat. I have been looking forward to visiting the Sun Inn for some time. We eventually got there on Saturday 6th July for dinner. The interior has a very traditional feel to it, but is enhanced by modern touches here and there.

Are we disappointed when visiting an establishment well reviewed by the TripAdvisor community, but this is the exception, lovely staff, well furnished dining room but our starter of bread and pork infused butter, not bad but not good enough to justify the price. My steak main course was only just passable. My Wife's roast sirloin with ox cheek was so poor and cold we sent it back. As she had no main course we opted for the cheeseboard (£10.00 plus) and in light of the disastrous meal thus far expected something special. Wrong again, small pieces of tired stale cheese, no biscuits, no celery and no grapes.

We had a meal in the restaurant we enjoyed and the breakfasts during our stay were very well cooked and presented.

Had a lovely meal at the Sun Inn. We had the Wild Garlic Poached Pollack (exceptional), the Slow Cooked Pork Belly (lovely), Lamb rump (beautiful- it melted in the mouth and was full of flavour), and the Pan Fried Black Beam (lovely - especially the fennel and dill emulsion). I must commend the chef - the Pollack was one of the best Starters I have ever eaten (and that includes more than 20 Michelin starred restaurants).

Food is amazing here and it’s dog friendly which is a plus, I eat here every time I come to Kirkby !! Completely recommend !!!

Lovely calm setting with comfy seating. Fish and chips was very good, lightly battered and chip shop style chips, so nice! Highly recommended

We had lunch today after seeing good reviews and were not let down. The atmosphere is welcoming and quietly informal. The food was excellent and different from usual pub grub without being outrageously expensive. The local beers were very well chosen and obviously well kept. Helpful staff without being obtrusive.

I had eaten here once or twice in the past, probably long before I started doing Tripadvisor reviews and the last time had been nothing more than an "ok experience". On a visit to Kirkby Lonsdale over the Easter weekend, the friend I was with suggested eating here and at first, I was less than enthusiastic as I remembered the tapas style dishes from my previous lunch there. However, having looked at the menu, I realised it had completely changed (and had probably undergone a change of ownership too). It was excellent food and cooked to order. I would certainly be happy to return in the future.
