Had an appointment at the next door Stracathro Hospital, which we arrived early for, so thought we'd kill some time and grab a coffee. What a dump, talk about a desolate looking place, it was like something out of a post apocalyptic movie, think 28 days later and you'd not be far wrong. Im guessing this place hasn't had a bit of furnature purchased or lick of paint applied this millenium. I'm so glad we only ordred coffee as after seeing the state of the toilets on the way out it would certainly put me off ever eating any food in the place even though the food pics in the other reviews look good. I found the toilets through smell rather than sight and it was very apparant why they absolutley stank of piss, i've seen better toilets at a 1980's football stadium than this place. Note in the pictures the wase pipe from the urine trough isn't even connected to a drain, it just runs onto a tile gully which is open to the room. Quite how Angus Council allows such standards at a place that serves food is baffling.

I was in on Wednesday 27th October for a quick bit to eat. A sausage roll looked good and I also fancied a roll with a sausage slice. My god this was pathetic. The sausage slice should never have been put across the counter as you could have soled my boots with it. The pastry of the sausage roll was OK but the sausage itself was rubber.I have always known this place was cheap and cheerful and have joked with people that if they want a descent tightener not to go there but this is now definitely worse. I just don’t get the bad reviews for this place. Compared to normal services this stop is phenomenal value. Yeah, there’s a few potholes on the car park and the place is old fashioned (but endearingly so) but 25 for overnight parking with a £20 (!??!) voucher that can be spent on anything from the food or shop or garage next door. I arrived late (7:30pm) so much fresh food had gone but I still got macaroni cheese, chips, beans, braised steak, 2 cans of Pepsi max, a cake, 2 bags of crisps and a red bull, sausage roll and Choc bar for tomorrow in exchange for my voucher. Good job all round, the staff are really pleasant too

This service area has been poor ever since I first stopped there in a lorry. It appears not to have been decorated since about 1975, seriously the decorative state is terrible. Also this service area, I stress service area is closed on the weekends both Saturday and Sunday when it’s busy, astoundingly it’s closed! The car park is lumpy and not surfaced at all really with huge potholes, it appears the owner or owners are averse to spending any money on this business. This is ridiculous for a service area, yes the petrol/diesel station is open but that’s it and the shop is not very good at all with rude staff in my experience. This is a so called service area to avoid at all costs.

Chips were OK too. Absolutely amazed that they could offer a dairy alternative that is NOT soy based. A lovely surprise, and the young man serving was very amiable. Overall a stop off that exceeded my expectation.

Stopped here for breakfast, and both had a full breakfast. Noticed that the fried eggs had weird black dots all over the bottom of it. I didn't eat mine, but my partner ate both of his. For the rest of the day my partner complained of a sore stomach, and was off his food (usually unheard of). The diarrhoea started at around 5pm, he had shivers, stomach cramps, blurry vision, and the guy usually has the constitution of an ox. I had an uneasy stomach all day, but mine didn't come to anything... But I didn't eat the eggs.Would not recommend, for what they're charging they could have a nice place there, but it's run down and full of random tat for sale. Just an odd, poop inducing place.

Called in on the way to the hospital. The service was slow. Ordered two bacon and egg on buttered rolls. The food came from the hot plate. It was cold, the buttered rolls were a waste of time as the butter was just a small blob in the middle of the rolls. The highlight of the visit was the stench coming from the gents toilet. I waited until I was at the hospital. This place is the worst Service's I have ever been to. The food is expensive for what it is - essentially canteen food (albeit tasty) - but I expect to pay a premium at a dual carriageway cafe so I wasn't put off by this, however I am put off by bad customer service. It was very quiet when I arrived for dinner today and there were 2 ladies in the serving area. One looked over at me then opted to pick up a jug to fill the coffee machine with. The other stood about for 30 seconds then walked up to the counter in front of me, looked at me then and proceeded to fill up a plate of food, presumably for her own dinner break - which I wouldn't have objected to - as there was nobody else waiting for food (and it hadn't just been replenished, so nobody was sitting down waiting for what was previously unavailable).Whilst it should have been unnecessary for me to wait, I'd have been more than happy to do so if either of them had cracked a smile and told me they'd be 'right with me' in acknowledgement. As it was, I felt I was a disturbance so I opted to drive a further 20 minutes down the road to a McDonalds where I anticipated the staff would be more attentive. McDonalds was ridiculously busy but I was right, nobody ignored me there.Disappointing because I have eaten here before and it was good for what it was so I'd been looking forward to it, but customer service is incredibly important to me and I found this extremely lacking. Next time ladies, please acknowledge your customers if you're going to leave them standing, it might make a difference :)

Went for a 'blast from the past' breakfast here with my other half. Last time I was here would have been in the '80's but often have driven by it on the way from Aberdeen to Dundee. Well it hasn't changed much. There are two bits to the cafe - a real truck stop bit with Formica tables with chairs attached and then a slightly more fancy bit (although fancy isn't the word) with proper tables and chairs - this is the bit that looks out onto the dual carriageway. The breakfast was average at best. Bacon, sausage, egg and beans served with toast. No choice of what goes on the breakfast and no sign of mushrooms, black pudding, hashbrown, etc... It's a queue up and collect your food type place like at an old school canteen. Only thing good was that the eggs were freshly fried as opposed to sitting under a hot lamp. Food tasted okay but there are much better places to go within 10 miles both North and South. The place really is in a time trap. It was good to satisfy my curiosity but sadly I won't be going back.

God help you if youre a tourist anf this is your first stop heading north. Either drive on and stop and Edzell or Brechin which a re both lovely. or stop a few miles back down the A90 at Peggy Scott Cafe.

Stopped for food on way North other day. First time in years. We've travelled quite a bit in last 20 years and seen some average restaurants but this place is disgusting. Not a good example of what Scotland has to offer travelling tourists. Place should be bulldozed. Better to go to petrol station next door for coffee and snacks.

This is a service area on the A9 with a car park full of lorries and trucks so don't expect too much!I met a friend early evening as it is a half way point for both of us. What a lovely surprise the food is! I had a large and very delicious serving of Steak and Mushroom stew(?) with veg and tatties at only £6.99. We both had our eye on a tasty looking apple and raisin pie, which is served with cream, ice cream or custard. I think it was less than £4??The place and the toilets are basic and the car park is potholed and bumpy but all this was forgiven as the food is home cooked, tasty, filling and good value. Lovely smiley staff added to an enjoyable eating experience. Not a place for a romantic meal at all but great food at great prices. So much better than stopping at a fast food outlet !!Easy access from north or south on the A90 just south of Laurencekirk.

Have to admit that we stumbled upon this place by chance but were we pleased we did. OK it is rather tacky around the edges, well probably a lot really but if you look closely it is clean and looked after. Our breakfasts were of good quality, quantity and delicious too! The prices are very reasonable and the staff are all good humoured and make you feel welcome..If you want the Ritz, don't stop here but if you want good wholesome food for reasonable cost then this is the place.

Have not been inside for many years, 30 + easy though I pass it on my way to Stracathro Hospital. We were joining a coach trip here, fantastic place I thought as there would be food and toilets plus the space to have a walk about and stretch the legs. What a shock, long, long queue for hot food and drinks which was where all the staff were meaning no service for newspapers, cans of juice etc.Yes you had to join the same queue to purchase the juice and chocolate bar. Remember time is limited because coaches run to a schedule so many never reached the end of that queue. Ah the toilets, now I have seen cleaner, better equipped facilities in the wilds of Morocco and Albania. Come on Stracathro Services join the 21st Century, you are missing such a huge opportunity it's not all about lorry drivers these days, the coach business is massive and you are sitting in the perfect position to capture that trade.

Whenever my family come up from Edinburgh to visit my dad always insists we go for dinner at Stracathro Truck Stop. He is a through and through meat and two veg man. The meals we have had here are always 2nd to none, and you will certainly NEVER leave hungry. The staff are lovely and the shop always has something interesting to look at. This is an honest, quality, value for money restaurant, there ain't many of them about. If you are hungry and in the area you won't find better.

I stopped here with my husband in June 2015 and I can honestly say it is the most disgusting place on gods earth. The food was thrown on the plate and tasteless everything was over cooked. The toilets were the filthiest and stingiest I have ever seen. The best thing for this place would be for it to be knocked to the ground. How this place remains open is beyond me. The environmental health have obviously never been so perhaps it's time they made a visit!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE

I stop here whenever I make my way up north to see family. The food is brilliant. Fresh ingredients and home made. The portion size is definitely for the truckers, more food than you can possibly imagine. You can get a main meal, a pudding and a drink for under a tenner, so also very good value for money. Yes the toilets are something to behold but you can forgive them as the food is just so darn tasty.

I took rare trip up to Aberdeen last week and made a stop at Stracathro Services for a break . I entered from the truck parking end and first encountered the Gents toilet - a breathtaking experience to say the least . From there I went for a bite to eat . A comprehensive menu of what turned out to be excellent food was on offer . A main meal and a mug of tea was bought for a little over seven quid . There isn't really anywhere else available on the Dundee to Aberdeen stretch of the A90 for trucks to stop at so it is a bit of ' Hobson's Choice ' . These services offer an authentic 1970's experience - like stepping back in time. The staff are very pleasant and , as mentioned , food excellent . A few of the southerly service stations could learn some better customer services from here and this place could learn a little about 21st century from them ......

This is one of the best breakfasts I have EVER had - square sausage is best I have ever had. All well cooked, no grease, freshest ingredients and all for under a fiver !! interesting. Good old fashioned food with lots of seats/tables To get all of this from a motorway services is truly amazing. Also there is a lovely shop selling loads of unique household and garden items. Good banter with folk who serve the food also !

Stopped for breakfast on the way to Aberdeen. Only 8 people in the cafe when I arrived, but breakfast still took forever to arrive. At least in will be freshly cooked I thought. Beans cold. Toast burnt. Haggis & bacon dried out. Egg was ok. First and last time for me.

Popped in for food on a busy Saturday night, the salt n pepper chicken and chips was tasty, but the steak pie was definitely the star. It was pretty busy, so app ordering was turned off, and when we went up to the bar to place our order, the bar staff made a point of telling us that the kitchen would be closing shortly so if we wanted desserts to make sure to order them soon; which I thought was thoughtful.

Just had a Christmas lunch with friends. It was superb. The staff were attentive, pleasant and polite. The food was fantastic. 3 of our group had curries which came in very generous portion sizes and beautifully presented. The other person in our group had the Cod in lime butter and caper sauce. It looked amazing and tasted like food from a 5* restaurant. Very reasonably priced for excellent food. We would definitely recommend.
