Stein's Kingston in Kingston upon Thames

Visited as a group of 9. Very limited choice of food for both adults and kids. Some dishes were great, others were mediocre with random flavours thrown in together. Good beer. Sloppy disengaged service. Great breads. Has a general feel of being more interested in being German than delivering a good experience. I'm not sure I'd return.

Service was superb and the food was delicious.

I'll start with the good. The restaurant is in a really nice location next to the river, and we had good service from the staff. However, the food you get for the price here is a joke, and I would never come back because of this. We ordered a 2 person sharing platter for £50 which came with a handful of small sausages, some mashed potato and sauerkraut. It was barely enough to feed one person rather than two. The portion size isn't too bad on its own, but when coupled with the fact that we paid £50 for this, it's frankly unbelievable. What made it even worse is that we checked the price for this on the website beforehand which was very different to the price on the day. If you love getting ripped off, here's the place to go to.

Very good authentic German food and beer. Highly recommended.

The place is quite narrow and long, was placed inside near the entrance door, could not say it is good. Liked the sausage and alcohol free beer and apfelstrudel, quality and service were good. But prices are high for such simple foods, almost 50 GBP per person.

My friends and I (including a child) visited this bar, and unfortunately, we had a very unpleasant experience. Despite calling for the waiter multiple times, we were completely ignored. When he finally acknowledged us, he was quite rude and even accused us of being impatient. His attitude felt dismissive, and it seemed like he was easily racist, which made the whole experience even more uncomfortable. The lack of basic customer service and respect was extremely disappointing. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone looking for a welcoming atmosphere or decent service.

Our server Jakub was amazing , friendly and attentive .Food was brilliant as well . The only reason why I am not giving full stars is that after speaking to my friend I found out that only half of the 12,5% service charge which is added to the bill goes to the staff and the company takes the other half . If I knew before I would have just left cash for the waiter and the kitchen to share . Also I’ve noticed one of the managers being quite patronising to the staff (micromanagement) My rating is purely for Jakub , kitchen , food , location and the views . The company and management are questionable.

The staff here are a delight, one strange thing… I come from Bielefeld and they kept telling me that’s not true and Bielefeld doesn’t exist! It does exist I tell you! The pretzels and schnitzels are to die for

Location is great as it is one of the few restaurants right next to the river without facing the crowds walking around. But their prices are too high for what they offer! We had only: one Schnitzel (portion is quite small for an adult), one Summer Salad (starter portion), one kid’s Schnitzel (portion is very good for a kid), one glass of beer, and one apple pie. We paid £80!! You can have that bill in Fischers or German Gymnasium in central London, where you can have excellent food with an excellent service and in a very elegant/fancy/high-class atmosphere. Stein’s atmosphere is not more than a regular pub, so that bill is quite shocking. That is why their tables were mostly empty on a Saturday evening in a beautiful warm weather outside, where all other restaurants in Kingston were fully booked (Stein’s was the only place where we could find a table to sit with a same day reservation)

A great place to dine. I used to always come here with friends, but I have subsequently realised how child-friendly it is. Large plates of sausages, a riverside terrace to watch the swans and boats, and great beer. It’s all a toddler (bar the beer) or adult could want.

The food here is always cooked to perfection! And served with a smile from the kind very kind friendly staff!! The beer is lovely!! Very lovely food I would highly recommended!!! Back again a few days later!!

Came yesterday evening and were just slightly too late to eat as the kitchen was closing. Wasn’t a problem as we stayed for drinks and sat outside on the terrace overlooking the river which was nice. Only had a couple of drinks, majority of clients had left already and the staff were starting to prepare for closing. We wanted to get the bill but no one came to the table. To save time we headed up to the bar and asked for the bill, only to be advised that its table service only and that we couldn’t pay at the bar. However shortly afterwards the lady gave the bill to my husband so that he could pay. He sat down at a table inside waiting for someone to come and take payment. He sat there for over 5 minutes despite the restaurant not being busy. Eventually someone came with the card machine. My husband commented on the slow service and was met with a sarcastic “ oh we are too slow are we” from the guy who had been sat at one of the tables next to the bar. Said he was the manager. The manager then proceeded to argue the point with us, had a hissy fit behind the bar saying” he’s not allowed back here” aimed at my husband. Totally unprofessional behaviour from the so called manager. A lesson for his staff on how not to treat your customers!!

I used to come here often, but haven't recently. It was always great, big portions, a bit expensive, but worth it for the quality, service and atmosphere. Unfortunately, although the service and atmosphere remain excellent, they have put up there prices, and for the Wiener schnitzel at least, the portion size has halved. I did query the portion size, on the check back, but was told that the owner had now told the chef to reduce the amount served. Given the price has increased, the portion of schnitzel was ridiculous. I know restaurants may struggle these days, but this was way over the top. I went for a burger afterwards, enough said. Such a shame...

One of my favourite places to eat in London. I love being able to enjoy the German foods I miss from living in Austria and visiting Germany multiple times. One of the go-to foods I would recommend is the Weiner schnitzel (Kalb)/veal schnitzel. I like to try new things, and on my last visit I tried the seasonal lamb which was excellent. This was the first time trying dessert as well, which I did not regret. I had the Schwartzwälder torte/ black forest cake and the person I was with tried the cheesecake. I assume it's made with Quark because you could taste the cheese which is often hidden in NY-style cheesecakes. A nice touch is that some of the staff speak German. On one of my visits I was able to speak German with our waitress which just made my day as I don't get to speak it often anymore. I appreciated that she could tell I spoke German by my pronunciation and simply switched mid-order :) Stein's is a real gem in Kingston and I highly recommend whether you speak German or not-- the food is always delicious!

Expensive for the quality and service you are getting. Service charge is added without being pre-informed. Beer was nice.

Fantastic food and service in a fantastic setting. Everything was delicious and it was reasonably priced. Get the pork knuckle, it is exceptional.

Food very overpriced , don’t bother if your vegatarian, 2 veggie sausages,3 small potatoes & a dollop of sourcralt £17! Meat items cost even more , couple pages of food on menu, rest is drink

I am writing to express my disappointment with the service I received at this restaurant on 20th July. During our visit, my family and I encountered significant difficulties in placing our order. We attempted to request service from at least three different staff members over an extended period. One older female employee told us to wait, assuring us she would return to take our order. However, no one came. When we approached her again, she redirected us to another staff member without explanation. What was particularly concerning was that we observed other tables receiving prompt attention and service while we continued to wait. As customers of Asian descent, we couldn't help but feel that we were being discriminated against based on our ethnicity. This experience fell far short of the level of service I would expect from your establishment. I strongly urge you to review and improve your service standards to ensure all customers are treated equally and with respect. Given this unsatisfactory experience, I regret to say that I would recommend potential diners visit your other branch instead. I hope you will take this feedback seriously and implement necessary changes to prevent similar incidents in the future.

I have eaten here many times and always love the experience. If you love German food, traditional beer in steins and a lovely outdoor seating right on the river then you must visit this place. Beats the typical chain restaurants in Kingston.

Excellent themed restaurant on the waterfront. Great selection of beers offered in 1l boot glasses and a fantastic selection of classic German foods including sausages, cabbage and Spaetzle.

Probably the best place to eat in Kingston, which has a lot of chain restaurants. The schnitzel and sausages are first class, the staff are friendly and there's a great terrace overlooking the river.

Love coming here, I used to live in Germany so I like German food/beer. Great in the summer outside sitting next to the river Thames.

Unbelievable mouth watering flavour experience. The selection of beers incredible. Plus the staff is so friendly and attentive make you want to stay longer and try the apple pie! Which by the way is so light, non sweet, and the combination of sweet-savoury-sour and hot and cold of the ice cream and the pie that certainly will invite you to enjoy the delicious dessert. I would without a doubt recommend this place!! So, if you are visiting Kingston you must come by this restaurant.

Generous portions of well cooked food with attentive service. Only downside is the bench seats are quite uncomfortable.

Waited for a long time to be seen! Then had the attitude of the bar staff saying we had to wait. No one acknowledged us so we left! We felt so unimportant! Not a great atmosphere at all!

WOW! Another disappointing, dismissive, rude experience! This is the 3rd time I one month I have tried to gone in to enjoy a beer and possibly dinner ONLY to be met with a rude man who did not acknowledge myself or the customers in the queue before me. They even quoted ' 'are we invisible?' The man told us he was busy, on the phone and next time....make a booking! Perhaps this should be made clear on their website that they DO NOT accept walk ins, nor do they acknowledge customers with a smile. Last week when I went and the waiter told me the restaurant was close, her behaviour and costumer service was as expected, but today when the little German man was on the floor the level of service was absolutely disgusting, aggressive and confrontacional. I WILL NOT be going back here for a 4th time to be refused due to them being 'BUSY' when last week they closed at 9pm because they were 'NOT BUSY' and the kitchen was closed. What exactly aren't the rules for this restaurant? Please can someone clarify or do they just make up their own rules depending on which way the wind is blowing....absolutely shocking!

We love Steins! The food is delicious and the staff are really friendly. We’ve been here multiple times with friends and family. Consistency of service and food quality is brilliant.

I’ve eaten here over 10 times and it has been consistently fantastic. Staff are lovely, atmosphere is warm and welcoming, beer is great, food is completely delicious. Easily one of my favourite restaurants in London. A real gem.

We chose to have our staff Christmas party at Steins due to its impeccable eye for good service, and outstanding reputation. Manager Chris has firmly placed his stamp on Steins. It’s the little attentions to detail that Chris takes pride in! Everything was organised efficiently. Top job Chris! Our server Vanessa kept on top of drinks orders, check backs to make sure the food was alright and all with a smile on her face! Steins is a local treasure in Kingston. The food, service and overall ambience was mesmerising. If you are new to the area and looking for a fantastic experience, Steins is the place! Great service and food at a good price

If you like sausage. This is the place for you. Warm and friendly service. Get the platter if you are in a group with some snitzel on the side and finish with the traditional pancakes.

Sausages were great. Mashed potato wasn't so much, but the service was fantastic and charming, and the drinks were excellent. Reasonable prices

Kitchen 5 star, service 1 star and atmosphere due to the moody staff was 1 star. Specially the curly redhead lady and the older waitress, don't think they wanted to be there.

Exceedingly friendly service inside a nice restaurant/ bar serving import beers and good food to pair. I had the currywurst and my partner the municher sausages, we both agree we would have it again. The apple strudel was also good.

If you have never been to Germany, then this is great. If you have been to Germany, particularly Bayern and managed to try the amazing fat food, then this is not that good. It has good beers. Probably the best bet is to go to sausages. I found the schnitzels a bit dry and soulless. The käsespätzle was a bit of a disappointment. Expensive for the quality. Good location with views over the Thames.

We found a table to share with another couple at the balcony and this waiter ( some bleached haired guy) literally shifted us from there, saying he'll find us a table and then the table he suggested was inside next to the bar. We wanted to sit at the balcony as it was a sunny day and found a table, but he decided we were gonna sit inside. On our way out, he said "Better luck next time!" Yes, better luck to your employer next time, as well!

A great beer place! Would love to return for some food. Epic looking menu. Has steins but also pints and half pints. Also wines and cocktails.

Everything I have tried from this place has simply been amazing. The food is delicious, drinks are good and the staff is super friendly. Very nice view as well. Would definitely recommend this place, specially around Christmas time. Every time I visit, I love it more.

Was für eine fantastische Einrichtung! So refreshing to see a German restaurant, serving the most authentic food. The Currywurst was incredible, the Veal Schnitzel was lovely a crispy, the potato salad was unique but gorgeous (especially on a warm day). The mash and Sauerkraut were bloody delicious. To top this all off the service was incredible, even on a really busy summer day. Well impressed! 🫡🫡

I've really started to warm up to the idea of drinking here more regularly - been to the Richmond one a few times but it's taken 6 years to try this one. I'm tired of a lot of the pubs in the area, while I've often rated them highly, the beer has become universally astronomical in price, that you may as well take the punt and spend £7 on a German number in proper glassware that's clean and served how it should be. Wash down that pretzel or giant pork Knuckle with a pint or stein of delicious cold frosty lager, table service by friendly staff, with a secluded river view raised away from the passers by. Dog friendly throughout, treats and water brought to our little one.

My second visit, great friendly service, excellent cold German beer on a hot day. Food is good and great value.

Sat for 30mins, didn’t get any service, gave the menus back, no response. Would love to review, but clearly not possible….

Very nice escape location in the heart of Kingston

Un lugar estupendo. Llegamos un día de lluvia muy intensa completamente empapados. Nos ayudaron y fueron muy amables. La comida estaba deliciosa, aunque la col fermentada no nos convenció mucho.

Had a nice time, spoke German, and had a classic German staple, "The Curryworst" on a bed of fried potatoes, and it was great. Good selection of proper Geman beers, and verry tasty they were too.

Super easy to get a walk in table. The service was attentive and fast. I wish you could mix and match some bits from the menu but the choice is great. We went for a platter for 2. We came out full. Totally worth it. The beers were also on point. Can't recommend enough

Fantastic food and amazing staff. This was our first visit to this restaurant but most definitely wont be our last. Next time we plan to go when the weather is better so we can take advantage of the veranda and views over the Thames.

Everything pig and mashed potatoes with portions to feed 4 people. Service charge is on the bill as standard even if service isn't great. It's a bit overpriced but atmosphere is good. Recommend the schnapps

Risk to health ! Food served on a dirty plate , with left over wilted salad and bits of rotting cucumber and bits of chewed up left over meat left by previous customer, left me feeling nouseous for days just thinking about food contaminated with someone else's saliva , I feel troumatised as I didn't notice the chewed up bit of meat until I have already touched the food ! Staff in this place seems indifferent, unconcerned about customers , look exhausted and completely spiritless. I will not be returning, obviously......

Ordered the pork knuckle, expecting a lovely crackly feast but disappointed to get a soggy limp skinned knuckle instead. Probably my fault for not showing the chef an online photo before!!

Excellent location adjacent to the river, helpful and friendly staff, authentic Bavarian/Austrian cuisine, I and my mother had the Wiener Schnitzel which was heavenly, wonderful German bier and a Black Forest Gateaux to die for, in the words of Graz's most famous son...'I'll be back'.

A bit on the pricy side but lovely staff and freak atmosphere

Stein's in Kingston is a definite favourite for me. I always leave with a smile and, honestly, a bit of a belly ache (always totally my fault). You know that feeling you get when you are full to the brim but still want one more bite... this is where that feeling comes to die as you discover your second stomach and laugh in the face of recommended daily allowances. With beautiful scenic views overlooking the river, all the sausages you can eat and a litre of genuine bravarian wheat beer to wash it down (served in a boot if you like that kind of thing), why would you go anywhere else? Don't be a sausage. Come and try this absolute gem!

My pork knuckle is not good smell

Very friendly staff. Food was great, we had pork knuckle and sausages. Baby friendly as well! Riverside, super relax.

We wanted to experience German food. We ordered lamb on knuckle after asking the waitress what it was. Waitress said it was the best choice, so we ordered two as there were two of us. Goodness when the food was served it was enough to feed an army! We then asked the waitress why she had failed to explain that only one order would have been enough with left over to take home and eat for the rest of the week for two people. One serving is more than enough for four people!She failed to give a satisfactory answer. They basically do not care, they are only concerned with profit! I therefore do not recommend you eat there.
