We visited Steins in Kingston for my mother’s birthday, hoping for an improvement from our last visit, but unfortunately, we were left disappointed again. The portion sizes are surprisingly small for the £18.50 price, especially when it’s mainly sausages with mash or bratkartoffeln and a tiny salad garnish. The desserts were good, the beer selection decent, and the staff were lovely, but the main courses have really declined in quality. Sadly, it’s not the restaurant it once was, and we won’t be returning.

Excellent- beautiful view of river Excellent with allergies My daughter and I came here again to sit on the Veranda and enjoy a beautiful sunny day looking out on the river. With home-cooked bread. Kaiser spatula, chicken schnitzel appleshoeler and plenty of smiles. My daughter age 6 always likes this place. The character is very Austrian/German. We go upstairs and look at the old types of skis, we look at the wonderful Tyrolean chalets and ski slopes. I tell her stories of how I went to Austria when I was younger and flew through Munich. We laugh enjoy our food and watch the beautiful animals, the boats and the rowers go by what a wonderful Saturday afternoon in the sunshine. Thank you very much. The food is excellent, they were very good at preparing a special meal for my daughter who is anaphylactic to Milk, dairy and soya. It would be nice if they did more dairy free puddings… Please apart from that everything was perfect. Our waitress was simply sweet. And so was Another nice young man serving as well. Will definitely go back. Thank you for a wonderful day.

Not good value for money. Tries to be a restaurant and a beer hall, but doesn't succeed at either. Food was very ordinary. Lots of expensive versions of sausage and mash and sloppy unappetising potato salad.

Below average German food. Paulana beer was good, but not pulled properly. Kalbschnizel and Schweineschnitzel were below average. Karoffelsalat (potato salad) was ok. Vegetable salad was poor. Overall, so sad to see such food served as German food which is mostly very tasty. Definitely, not done by someone who knows German food.

Terrible food! Ordered vegan bratwurst with sauerkraut and potato mash, a bretzel and a side salad. Sauerkraut was grey and inedible, the sausage had barely seen a pan and the mash was some re-heated and chopped up boiled potatoes. Bretzel was hard, dry and also inedible. The side salad was ok, but only just. What is going on? This used to be a good, fairly authentic Bavarian restaurant. Now it is completely overpriced and serves up horrible food. The waitress, however, was very attentive and helpful. She deducted 50% of the price. Sadly, it was not even worth that.

Would also recommend the Black Forest gateaux if you can fit it in. The children’s menu is limited, but good. Both kids are really well. Have been coming to Stein’s regularly. Great food and beer. Not the normal team tonight Came in at seven. After meal, chose deserts but was told no coffee. Should have guessed all the loud clattering cleaning the machine. If you wanted us to leave, so you could go home early, just needed to say so. That’s what it felt like. Only a few people in and staff cleaning like mad. We thought the place shut at 8, but were told 10. Talk about making us feel welcome!

I have eaten here four of five times over the years and the food is / was always good. Unfortunately to day whilst the food was ok (sausage was cold) the service was not very good. I would have give. This restaurant 3 stars even with the poor service (they bought my wife’s food 20minutes after mine. Fed up of waiting i went to the bar to pay the bill and the waitress apologised for the earlier mistake and said she had given us a discount to make up for it. Such she did on checking the bill they had reduced the cost of my main by £4.99. But this is the brilliant bit they then charged me £6 for service. Don’t bother not what it used to be.

4 of us went for dinner before a visit to the theatre on a Saturday evening and the place was very busy. We waited a little longer for the food to be served than I would have wished but, as I have already said, they were very busy and we made it to the theatre on time. There were larger groups and family groups dining as well as couples and groups of friends.Having had a number of meals in Germany, this is what I would regard as a typical menu with many of may favourite German dishes. The Knuckle of pork was excellent and the schnitzel looked very good and was recommended by a diner on a table close to us. The portions were substantial. I don't think I could have managed three courses. Indeed I struggled to finish the main course. They were happy to swap the potato dumpling that my pork knuckle was supposed to come with for bratkartoffeln. There is a good beer menu with German beers (including weissbier) and there is a wine menu as well. The staff were helpful and friendly.I hope they will still be there once the country opens up for business again as I would certainly return. Probably better to book especially on a Saturday night.

We've been regular patrons over the years, and the setting remains excellent - next to the river, well shaded, lots of tables and with a safe place at the back for children to play including slides and seesaw. But sadly the staff are changing, for the worse! My wife is allergic to potatoes, and on previous visits they've always happily swapped them for a bread roll. Not any more though - despite the rolls being on the menu at 90p and the fried potatoes at £3, apparently no swaps allowed at all. What really rankles though is the sheer rudeness of the staff - "we've never made substitutes" (not true, we've been eating here for years) and sneering "I very much doubt that's true" when we said it's never been a problem in the past. Setting aside the sheer pettiness and and refusal to accommodate any reasonable allergies, the real problem is the attitude - as there's really never a need for such offensive response to courteous requests. If the policy has changed just tell us politely, don't be rude. This place will no doubt continue to prosper thanks to the idyllic location, and the food remains good (albeit increasingly pricey for what it is) but it's definitely resting on its laurels, I'm not sure we'll be back.

Stein's environment is picture perfect for date nights. I have been to the restaurant around three times, and all three times have been amazing. The drinks are great, the food is delicious and the service is quite good. Bavarian food is one of my weaknesses, and having had the real thing, I can honestly say that this restaurant does Bavarian cuisine justice. Go on ahead and try it, you won't regret it. To be completely fair and not biased in my opinion, the only improvement I would add is the cleanliness of the bathroom. They could do a better job in that department.

I had the Farmers Feast which was amazing, see pic attached. Even the Pretzel to start was great. Well worth a visit, and advise you to book as it's not too big. They have one down the river in Richmond too though.

Great location in central Kingston: this long narrow restaurant stretches back from the High Street to an open area at the back overlooking the river. Service is friendly and efficient. The food is tasty and hearty- my wife and I had two types of wurst with mashed potatoes, sauerkraut and red cabbage, washed down with Bavarian beer, and a soft dumpling with plum jam in a delicious vanilla cream sauce. This is a great addition to Kingston's restaurant scene and deserves to succeed.

Oh Steins how I still love thee so. Still easily the best beer in Kingston and the food is very very dependable - the pork shoulder and red cabbage just hits the spot with a cold stein of dark beer. The staff are always really nice and hard off they still wear the German garb too. On a sunny evening sitting on the terrace...could it be any more perfect? A gem.

This is a fantastic little restaurant serving a wide range of German beers in 2 pint steins. There were 6 in our group and we ordered the sharing board for 10 which comes with a variety of different sausages, pickles, potatoes and sour kraut. Really, really tasty and goes so well with the German beers. However we polished off the board with no trouble at all so I’m not sure it really serves 10 people. Service was good throughout the night but we missed last orders as the restaurant was about to close. Would have been nice if they had let our party know that as such a great place to sit outside on the riverside chatting with friends and drinking great beers.

Delicious German food, exactly as I experienced it in Germany. Yes, its greasy, fatty and unhealthy but still indulgent and homely. Service was great. Delivering the desert we ordered took some time but the waiter was kind enough to deduct it from the bill as an apology. Trust me, this is extremely rare in London, famous for its poor customer service worldwide. We will be back.

The food was great and would definitely recommend, however, ordered a pint of lemonade and when the bill came out was charged for two individual bottles at £2.80 each, overall price charged £5.60 for a pint of lemonade!! This was more expensive than the pint of beer and put a real dampener on our meal.

I dragged my partner here for dinner. I'm of German descent and I know there is much more to German food than wurst and kraut. Proved myself right. Wonderful choices of perfectly prepared German food, note of caution, save room for pudding. Delicious apfel fritters. Lovely attentive staff. Wonderbar evening.
