The pub is aesthetically pleasing, down to the menu and what it attempts to serve you. The portions are ludicrously expensive (£24 for a fish and chips), although it is quite large. There is clearly a very high turnover of staff, as it was like watching chickens dance. No one knew what they were doing or seemed to have the ability to ask what was going on. I don’t blame the waiters for the terrible service, I think it’s the manager’s fault. We had items missing, were charged the same price for a small as well as a large drink, no knowledge of intolerances from our server, huge delays in serving, no active effort to bring us the bill or take orders. If the management don’t become more approachable to their staff, or provide adequate training, they will continue to have a high turnover, the reputation will continue to go down, and this place will go into the ground. If you’re reading this and thinking about applying for a job here, think twice.

Well where to start.... not sure I have a positive thing to say about my dining experience here. From the outset we had low innatentive service, had to go to the bar for drinks order and dessert and ask for the bill as we quickly realised we would be ignored otherwise... which is fine and usually acceptable in a pub, but not at the steep prices on this menu! We were one seat short for our booking so had to rearrange and get an extra chair Missing drink from order and when we finally got someones attention the server they acted surprised as though we were in the wrong. (This happened throughout the evening with drinks and food and could have been avoided with a check 'has everyone got everything' rather than us waiting to see if they were coming back to the table..(they didn't.. )) When it came time to order I asked the server (who was dressed in tracksuit trousers?!) about meals for allergens and they were clueless (there is no gluten free main course options and one shockingly terrible 'starter') Terrible (or lack of) choice for allergens and no tolerance to adapt the food / menu to cater which I was surprised about, it's been a long time since I've felt so uncomfortable eating in a restaurant, personally I wanted to leave but stayed with the group I was dining with as not to make a scene. I wish I had looked at the menu in advance and I would have chosen to eat before coming to the restaurant and just join the rest of the dining party for the social element. The manager refused to remove the food item from the bill that was sent back to the kitchen citing 'you get what you order' despite the server saying they will remove it from the bill Missing food items, asked about them twice to two different servers never appeared back each time, by the time food was cold so gave up waiting for it and assumed it wasn't coming. We also realised that one fish item was missing from one of the main courses after eating. If they were sold out, it wasn't communicated. The cream with dessert was curdled which was only noticed after eating it.. by that point we had given up on the whole experience and just laughed at how terrible it was in general which is a shame, thankfully they were not sick from it. We had issues with the bill, plus 12.5% service charge!!! (Which I regret not challenging as we did not receive a good standard or service to justify anything near this amount for a tip, in this circumstance I would have not paid a tip at all as absolutely not justified) I speak for myself and the experience witnessed around me but I think some people may have generally enjoyed their meal but noone was complimentary of it. Really disappointed and expected better things as its in a lovely location and has so kuch potential. We were due to return the following week but cancelled the booking, when we were asked why we were cancelling the booking and explained the disappointment in service and food etc they seemed unbothered and didn't attempt to apologise or ask for more information, just responding with 'alright then' or something to similar effect.

It is in a lovely location and we had high expectations of an old traditional pub with good hearty pub food. We were disappointed on every level, the food in our opinion was average but the prices were far from average and the 12.5% service charge is plain greedy. We stayed in Waternish around 600 metres away from the Stein and this could have been our go to pub but we had no desire to return and instead ate every other evening at the Edinbane Inn some 7 miles away where the food is excellent, the prices are reasonable, it was friendly and it is the customers discretion as to how much they pay for the service.

Location amazing, food was fine (above average for pub food), front of houses staff lovely and overstretched. We had a dinner booking for 7.30, and arrived around 7pm for a pre dinner drink, which we had in a seating area adjacent to the bar (and not part of the restaurant). 7.30 came and went, and we watched at least one if not two couples who arrived with no booking be seated in the restaurant area. We asked about our table, and were told it was not quite ready. At the same time, 3 or 4 walk-ins (no bookings) having drinks in the seating area asked for and got menus and food service. We finally were given a table close to 8pm (another couple with a 7.30 booking were seated after 8pm). Front of house staff valiantly tried to manage the situation by indicated that they were short staffed. However, it was pretty apparent that the inability to prioritise those with bookings above walk-ins was distracting the flow of business away from those with bookings and slowing service to those in the restaurant. Would i eat there again? - if I was staying at Waternish, then possibly yes, if not, then probably not. And I note there is a Michelin Star restaurant 2 or 3 doors up from the Stein Inn if you want a change from pub grub.

The food was delicious and the staff wears so nice. The langoustines were so yummy and the fig and Camembert melted in your mouth. I have never seen a piece of haddock as big as the one on the fish and chips!!

Obviously, the Stein Inn looks idyllic and is in a beautiful location. We arrived with great expectations, which went rapidly downhill. My overriding impression is that the staff there have a far higher opinion of the place and themselves than is really deserved. We were left feeling that they were doing us a huge favour allowing us to dine there, which is never a great way to feel. The food was, in my opinion, pretty average and very expensive. Also, and this is a huge bugbear of mine, we were charged a ridiculous servíce charge which we weren’t told about. Unfortunately my husband paid the bill but didn’t have his glasses with him so didn’t notice this till we got back to you B & B 😂

A lovely location and a really cute bar/restaurant, but unfortunately this place is overpriced and pretentious. The quality of the raw ingredients was generally good but what a shame the actual dishes themselves are really lacking in taste. I had the wild duck as a starter and it was not good at all, the sea bass as a main was not bad but could have been much better. We gave polite feedback to the French waiter but he quite visibly could not have cared less. In general the staff come across as quite arrogant. I definitely don’t recommend this place and I won’t be going back.

Jammer.😔

Four of us ate here on Sunday evening. My skate smelled and tasted terrible. It looked dry and as if it had been warmed up. The staff smelled it and agreed with me. They took it away and didn’t charge us for it. I didn’t have a replacement main course and they didn’t apologise much or seem surprised. We paid for everyone else’s meals which were all fine. I was astonished that a restaurant could serve such horrible and definitely off food.

Wonderful experience. Friendly staff who were prompt and willing to help, but in no way hovering or overbearing. Amazing food, beautifully presented, fresh, local, and superbly cooked. Quirky decor that did not detract from the historic aspects of the old inn. Saw the inn on a YouTube channel, Living the Skye Life, I follow and everything about it made me want to visit. We were so pleased we could obtain a reservation!

Oldest pub in Skye, and it feels like it. So quaint and the sign at the door is so old school. Food is incredible here as is the wine list. Had venison steak…. It was out of this world and the haggis bob-on and chowder…. all perfection. The only two issues were there were lots of young children everywhere which were noisy - and even if you eat early you still want to enjoy it - and the service was a little slow. I think they needed more staff on.

We had a lovely meal for our last night in Skye. The building is very charismatic with lovely views through the windows. It had a lively atmosphere and great choices on the menu. We had the tomato salad and smoked fish for starter, langoustines and fish and chips for mains and crumble and ice cream for desert. The fish and chips were massive! We really enjoyed all our food and loved the feel of the pub. Would definitely recommend.

I put a review on in August then thought I'd look and see if anything has changed, apparently it hasnt. Be aware of the top and VAT..to not add these on the menu is dishonest especially when fish and chips were already £25(I think) Re-reading reviews reminded me..we too had the experience of being totally ignored when we arrived, we thought maybe barman was finding it hard to excuse himself from a conversation with locals then realised that it was all staff, happily ignoring us!. Not changed. I definitely feel the old Stein Inn was better, and much more welcoming, it's spoilt by this crowd And I would reiterate that attention is not drawn to the service charge ..which is added to the whole bill including the very expensive drinks and increases the bill hugely. For foreign visitors I'd say it's NOT usual in the UK unless in London to have a 20% service charge added. So ask to have it removed. It's daylight robbery imo. We tip if service has been exceptional not as a rule. Who expects to pay 20% extra to have food slapped on the table? Do I pay Sainsbury staff for putting food on the shelves or my window cleaner for doing the job I've paid him for? Does anyone tip me?? I have to say the meal was delicious, but the above tainted it. A good traditional inn spoilt by pretentious incomers.

It's the sort of cosy, adorable pub you want to sit in all night enjoying drinks and company. The problem is, it's not really a pub at all - it's a (very fancy!) restaurant. You need to book in advance, eat within your allocated 90 minutes, then leave to make room for the next booking. We didn't stay overnight as had a cottage nearby, so can't comment on rooms. We went on 30th Dec after confusion about whether or not it was open. We'd earlier seen a review saying it was shut til March, and the day before we took a walk down and it appeared closed up for the winter. However, we then saw another review that suggested it was open, so we booked online via their website for dinner that night and crossed our fingers! On arrival, they had no notification of our booking, despite my having a reference number. They did, luckily, still find us a table next to the fire. To sum up - it was overall a good experience, but we left with mixed feelings. I really wanted to love this place, and I did love the decor, location, atmosphere and food. Despite some bad reviews, the staff were all very pleasant. The food was tasty and v fancy. A nice waiter showed my daughter how to eat langoustines and brought her wee tools to help. Downsides - 4 main courses and 2 drinks came to £106. Portions were too big and booking info had warned us we had our table for 90 minutes. No time/room for desserts, but at those prices, just as well. 30% is added onto menu prices. Luckily I had read reviews warning about this or I would have been pretty miffed. We got 4 'big plates', 1 diet coke, 1 pint of Skye Red, and (free) tap waters. I would have preferred smaller portions for cheaper prices. They do 'small plates', which I found confusing (are they starters?) so I would recommend going for the small plates and a cheaper bill. Phone to book.

Dropped in for lunch after many years away. Appears to have upgraded itself since we were last there and now serves mainly seafood. Fairly pricey. We just opted for the mussel, fish and leek chowder (as we had a serious meal ahead of us that evening) which had plenty of fish and leeks in it but wasn't particularly flavoursome or well seasoned. Others were ordering some serious seafood. Lovely view and a garden over the road by the loch. Comfy cosy interior, friendly staff.

Food was ok however I have never had 20% vat added to a bill and a menu showing vat exclusive prices. Yes, we have to pay vat on food but to give out a menu with no mention anywhere that vat will be added? And the excuse given? Noone notices generally but occasionally someone does...and we have to charge vat....but not to show this clearly on a menu is it on. With the 10% service charge added, that's a whopping 30% addition when you get your bill.

We made a late reservation, which is no doubt why we ended up sitting in a fairly characterless room adjoining the kitchen and across the hall from the bar and main restaurant. Service was slow; as at many other restaurants (worldwide?), there aren’t enough servers. I suspect, however, that what I’d ordered tripped things up. I ordered pheasant. What arrived a good while later looked an awful lot like beef in beef gravy. Tasted like it, too. It was fine for what it was but … to not even come back to the table and explain things? I also had chowder, which was quite good, and my wife enjoyed the monkfish and tomato salad. Wine was satisfactory. An odd dinner.

Do not stay here!!!! We stayed one night. Left too early for breakfast. Room was dirty, tiny and not worth anywhere near the £165 we paid. The staff are quite frankly the rudest and most unprofessional I’ve ever encountered. We tried to get our money back as soon as we saw the room but there was some excuse about there not being any management around so we had to stay. Although the Australian waitress did tell us that “you can go if you don’t like it”. The French barman was utterly rude to us. We waited about 20 mins to get a drink without any acknowledgment. We couldn’t move in our room. One of us had to lie on the bed if the other was getting dressed. There was no mirror in the bathroom (!) no television or radio and the decor looked like it had come from a jumble sale. Apparently that’s what a “budget room” looks like according to the staff. We had to leave for a ferry in the morning but breakfast didn’t start until 8.30. We were told that they would leave some food out for us. It was dark and we couldn’t find the lights but found some cereal with no milk and a bowl of fruit. We left at 7.15 without seeing a soul and without so much as a coffee. Money down the drain. And not one single apology.

If you are happy to pay £240 a night for a dirty, hostel-style room (see photos) … If you don't mind being ignored for 5 minutes when you arrive, whilst the barman and locals are sharing jokes and laughing at you ... If you're not concerned about having your room serviced during your stay … If you're willing to pay London prices for drinks (£11.55 for a G&T) … If you can accept being confronted and humiliated by the Chef and proprietor, in front of a bar full of people for discreetly mentioning to the rude waiter (who said "I didn't cook it - what do you want me to do"!) when you are unhappy with your meal … ... feel free to stay at this establishment! We booked 3 nights here as we were due to go to St. Kilda from the jetty nearby. However, we left after 2 nights having been told to “leave if you don’t like it” … and we met other customers who did the same. We didn't care about the £240 lost - our sanity was more important! Please don’t ignore the bad reviews like I did – they are honest despite the reviewers being called liars by the proprietor! There are some lovely hotels on Skye … this isn’t one of them!

Great food and ambience. We had lobster, and fish and chips. Both were fresh and delicious. Service was friendly and quick. The staff were clearly kept busy as the place was really busy. Other diners were also enjoying their food around us. I do feel they should make it clearer that the menu prices don't include vat and service, both of which can cause the bill to be larger than expected. But for value and quality, not to mention a quirky surrounding and good atmosphere, this place can't be beat.

The pub is delightfully situated on the side of the loch and a nice old pub feel inside. The staff were equally very welcoming and attentive. The seafood was fine however we can only give two stars because of the following reasons:-The menu bore no resemblance to the sample menu on the website. The menu was so limited and handwritten on a dog eared sheet of A4 paper and barely legible. The menu was limited to mussels, langoustines, crab or lobster or burgers(choice of venison or portobello mushrooms). The same menu for starters and mains. No fish dish at a seafood restaurant! The reason we were given was that it was a new chef settling in. The food was also overpriced, eg a venison burger and chips -£19. As we were booked in later in the week we asked if the menu would be the same and we were told that they were hoping to offer a wider range of items but were having supply problems and they were hoping to offer more - in June!!Sorry Stein Inn, we have cancelled our 2nd booking and really felt it was just not good enough.

About as good as it gets. There is a sea to plate feel to the whole location. Excellent off-village car park allowing for space to be kept in the very small postcard seaside village setting. Style and decor inside and outside are both perfect. Palm trees and panoramic sea views from original slate seating along the front of the building. High quality garden furniture closer to the sea. Inside gives off that old feel with a modern twist. Log burners, original decor and stylish art well placed. The two members of staff I met were very welcoming and friendly. Everything was very easy and no problem at all. The food was unreal. Easiest way to describe - Michelin flavours/gastro sizes. What more can you ask for? A pint of Skye Gold on cask? Which I had to wash down the amazingly flavoured Langoustines, super tasty side sauce and the most flavoured with detail Venison Burger. I shared this with my partner for lunch and we were both still full at tea time. This might have had something to do with the amazing Sticky Toffee Pudding with a dollop of local ice cream we shared after.

My husbands beef cheek arrived fairly quickly and had good flavour but was lukewarm at best. We visited Stein Inn in October 2021. I never intended on writing this review or even complaining about our visit at all. However, after an innocent comment on one of Paul Rankin's posts (no longer the Stein Inn's owner)where the only negative word used was disappointment, I was messaged directly by the current owner. My "complaint" (there was no official one) was deemed lies and my character was attacked! I was called a liar, told I make her sick, that I have no idea. Bearing in mind I had made no complaint or bad review. I did not respond... only for her to message me again over 2 hours later. I was told that PR would feel sorry for me. I have all the messages so if I'm challenged that this never happened and called a liar (again) I have proof. All through this exchange she was not interested in knowing why I was disappointed, she just attacked my character and decided that because I was a PR fan she unloaded her personal issues with him to me. I am so disheartened by this as I really struggle with writing a negative review for anywhere. But when my character is attacked I feel I have no other choice. Reading the reviews it doesn't seem like I'm the first. Such a shame the place has great potential but the owner is lacking in people skills and resilience.

We last visited The Stein Inn during our holiday in May/June and it was good then but it’s even better now. It has a more relaxed atmosphere now and the menu has changed. The menu is smaller - it is four starters, four mains and four puddings. This seems a better idea. You know you’re getting freshly cooked, generally locally sourced ingredients. We had Scotch Broth and Sweet Potato soup to start, both thick filling soups. My husband had fish and chips and I had haddock masala with mash. The fish and chips came with really fresh (homemade ?) tartare sauce. The haddock masala was very tasty and had fresh wild mushrooms in it, I can definitely recommend it. We were too full for puddings but those we saw coming out of the kitchen looked delicious. The style of The Inn is just lovely, lots of candles lit and I have commented to the owner on previous visits on the artwork. As we’re here for two weeks, another visit is probably on the cards.

My wife and I had booked dinner here for two nights during our current visit to Skye .We decided to pop in for a quick drink prior to our first reservation .What a total shambles !I waited for 25 minutes standing at the bar to be served and only 2 people were ahead of me .The guy behind thx bar didn’t seem to have a clue what he was doing , how to work the till or how to pour a drink ,I learnt it was his first day there ( allegedly) This being the case, then poor show on the owners for not training the guy sufficiently.Sitting outside after we eventually received it drinks, I heard two separate customers commenting when leaving on how “ shambolic “ the service had been ,I decided to cancel both bookings, informed the girl in the bar as to our reasons why and she couldn’t have cared less!To be fair, the food looked decent but at the prices they’re charging you’d expect better trained staff

Having read some of the previous negative reviews of the Stein Inn I have to admit I was a little worried as to how our stay for 2 nights was going to be.However, I should have had no concerns, this is an excellent place to stay! What an amazing location. The staff go out of their way to ensure that you have a great stay. Particular mention to Alex in the bar and Jean or Joan (apologies as I did not quite catch her name) who serves a sumptuous breakfast. Yes our room was a bit small, but it was spotlessly clean with an excellent view, warm and a huge bathroom (with plenty of hot water). The restaurant had a restricted menu, but the food was great quality.I'm not sure if the previous negative comments made by a couple of people were actually staying at the same place as us as I found their comments to be completely the opposite as to what we experienced. Hopefully we will get the opportunity to return in the future.

We recently stayed at the Stein Inn on Skye and would thoroughly recommend a visit. Not only were the staff warm and welcoming but the pub itself is steeped in history and full of atmosphere. The views are to die for and what more could you want but to fall asleep at night to the sound of the waves lapping against the shore. In terms of bedrooms, they are spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We have read some negative reviews ref the rooms here and feel that these have been somewhat unfair. This is an 18th century inn and not a hotel as such and an entirely different experience. We loved it and it was everything we had hoped it would be for our first visit to a relatively remote part of Skye. Breakfast was also excellent and Charlie our host was just lovely. Would love to return. Rick & Claire Bragg.

We travelled 20 miles to have lunch at the Stein Inn. I had checked first on the website and it said no bookings taken for lunch. Got to the Inn at midday and were met by a sign inside saying 'reservations only today '! There were 2 other guest groups who had arrived at the same time as us. We all waited inside the bar/restaurant and no-one came to greet us. Looked like the place was closed. We waited a further 5 minutes for someone to appear and left. We could see the other people leaving shortly thereafter. Of course it is impossible to say what could be happening in the owners lives and whether there was a genuine reason for not opening, however, common courtesy would dictate that a note could be left to say whether open or closed. On a terrible day of weather it was a very poor experience not just for the Stein Inn but also tourism in the area.

Just been reading reviews fur this place and not surprised don't take critiscm well. We had poor experience when we turned up in October only to find the place shut with no warning. We had booked to stay. Didn't even bother to let us know. Took us till march 2021 to make contact despite us trying to contact them fur a refund. We got the same experience from Charlie I. E. People don't have the right to complain. Sadly just excuses from not letting us know why they left us stranded. Fantastic location on the shore in Stein. The inn has been tastefully updated while still retaining its character including the stone fireplace. Dog friendly which is much appreciated. The staff were very welcoming and friendly, providing good service and a nicely relaxed ambiance. We both had lobster caught freshly in the bay with side salad and frites followed by chocolate brownie with ice cream and apple and rhubarb crumble with cream. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will definitely be back.

The only recommendation I could make about this place is, don’t go. We arrived in time for dinner for an overnight stay. Bedroom. Our bedroom was tiny.It felt like we were sleeping in a cupboard. Heating was not on and room was cold.Luckily I like a cold room. Shower water was lukewarm.Room however was clean.Food. Nothing short of abysmal. Menu not large enough or varied enough. As a diabetic I could only find mussels on the menu and if you didn’t feel like mussels then there was nothing else. I spoke to the owner Charlie and she spoke to the chef who said they could do cold salmon slice ( like you get with scrambled egg) and vegetables. But tell me who wants that for dinner? So I didn’t take any dinner. My husband had breaded haddock that was served within 4 mins of order to table . Too quick and that tells its own story.. He said it was soggy and not nice.I asked Charlie the owner ( the barman said she was the owner) what was on the breakfast menu and she side stepped that and told me to ask the barman. So I asked the barman and wait for this…. The breakfast was a continental breakfast only as they don’t always have a chef working to make hot food ! So nothing a diabetic could eat all. The barman reimbursed £5 each as neither of us ate breakfast. So not in a month of Sundays would I ever recommend this establishment in its present state. As I was leaving this morning a gentleman came forward and asked me did I enjoy my stay and so I told him a few home truths. He told me he was glad to hear my issues as it’s a learning curve for him as he was “brought in to steady the ship” That’s another statement that tells a story. So take my advice & don’t stay or eat in this establishment.

The food at the Stein Inn is what you might expect of an Inn with rooms, in a remote location, catering for a large number of covers; it’s OK. The smooth running of the restaurant is clearly impacted at the moment and the hospitality crisis is hitting the industry hard in post-Brexit Scotland. The front of house team (Bar / Table service) were excellent, ever-friendly, courteous and helpful but are struggling to manage the number of covers. The food was fairly basic with some good dishes (the Sconser scallops and the homemade crumble in particular), but some less so, and overall the menu could have offered a little more variety. Having said that, many of the diners in the restaurant appeared very happy with their meal and their experience. The location and ambience of the building provide the Stein Inn with enormous potential, and with a full complement of staff and some changes to the menu there is great potential for this to be a must-visit venue in future. Feedback provided to restaurant team at the time. (This review is just for the restaurant. Separate review of the Inn also provided).

We ate at the Stein Inn following recommendations from our air bnb host.We were promptly seated and sat for almost 30 minutes before being offered a menu or a drink. Very slow service. The waiter was very lovely and polite though. We ordered the venison and the lobster tail. We were both highly disappointed with the meals and the fries that accompanied the lobster were under cooked and soggy. We planned on getting a dessert, but due to the extremely slow service ( which the bar man did apologise for when we left) and the highly disappointing main meal, we decided to skip this. The meal came to around £80 this was for 1 course and 2 glasses of house red wine and 2 soft drinks. For this price I would expect a far better experience and far better food. We did pay the additional 10% service charge that was already added to the bill, but this was purely because we felt uncomfortable asking for this to be taken off given our waiter was so lovely when she greeted us.We ate at much nicer places on Skye, do yourself a favour and don’t book to eat here.

My partner and I have just enjoyed a world class dining experience, the best in years, at the Stein Inn Isle of Skye. Everything was truly delicious. Freshness and flavour of the sea food is beautifully prepared and presented along with delicious and interesting side dishes, All the flavours coming from this kitchen were exceptional. The food is def not fast food flung out of the kitchen to collect our cash... but carefully prepared and cooked fresh to order which of course needs a little time which flew by enjoying pre dinner drinks in the charming ambiance and the breath taking view. The welcome, goodwill and hospitality of everyone was so genuine and sincere. from the decor to the cozy log fires.Deryn our charming and helpful waitress excited and tempted us explaining the delights of the menu and provenance of all the natural and local produceThe owner Charlie is a world class restauranteur who's created a welcoming and beautiful experience at her Inn which you'll remember long after you leave SkyeThe atmosphere is charming and quirky like no other. Every moment was a pleasure from walking in to walking out happy and content. Don't miss having a word with Alex the barman. His travel experiences and adventures are enchanting not to mention his whisky collection and knowledge of the 150 types he keeps. As an experienced world traveler and foodie I found the location is beyond exceptional The lobsters and Crabs could have walked from the sea into the kitchen - in fact they did walk from the sea being carried by the lobster man who's boat is moored right outside. His first delivery is always to Stein Inn - it's impossible to have fresher sea food anywhere.Stein Inn is now new on my list of go places and not to be missed recommendationsThe success of Charlie's Stein Inn has made it a destination of exception

Our meal was terrible! The prawn starter was generous but inedible as the prawns were clearly not fresh, and turned to pulp as I tried to peel them. I ate only 3!My fish and ‘chips’ were lukewarm - I think they had been left on the side while the kitchen tried to work out how to put a gluten free dish together for my partner, even though they had been advised days in advance of this! Beautiful setting on the waterfront, sadly not the weather to eat outside but inside is quirky ,cosy & welcoming .Had two mains & desserts plus a large sav & Pellogrino £65Staff very nice , attentive but not overly . My puy lentil curry was sadly tepid in the middle which suggested a rewarm if it had been chilled I would have complained but I hate making an issue out of my food as I’m so often disappointed as a vegetarian & I don’t want to spoil a dinner by making my husband think my meal was sub standard . We booked a table in advance of our holiday and we were not disappointed. The food was incredible! We had the seafood terrine as a starter and muscles, cullen skink and scampi as mains. It was really good. The staff were really lovely, but did make a few mistakes and nobody seemed to be focused on a particular area, so we had to ask for service if we needed it, but that didn’t bother us and didn’t change the overall experience. Incredible food, atmosphere and location.

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a 2 week tour of Scotland. The location is great - it's remote so there's ZERO mobile signal and there's nothing around the inn apart from the Michelin restaurant next door. No shop and it's a 15 minute drive to the nearest place with a shop or restaurant. So - we had been told that they weren;t doing food as it was a Monday and Tuesday but we fully expected the pub to be open. We turned up to find that in fact, we were paying full price for a pub that was actually closed. That was a massive disappointment since it meant there was no atmosphere and the best bit of the stay, was off-limits and locked. Not only that, but our deluxe room at £160 a night was spacious with lovely views but very tired. Mould in the bathroom, very basic furniture. A tea tray with one carton of UHT and no tea bags. We did get a jug of milf after I went to ask.. the second day, the room wasn't touched so no milk at all and still no tea bags. They had some problem in the kitchen so no cooked breakfast either which my partner was very upset about.I have to say, charging full price for a mediocre experience is really poor and I would expect more of a place that has so much character and potential. Yes the pandemic has impacted everyone and we have been making big alowances for months now - but this did feel shoddy. No excuse for not tidying rooms and making guests feel welcome.

Such a shame. Beautiful pub, lovely staff but there was no overall management, staff were not supervised at all. With its reputation (and price!) we thought fish would be reliable but two of our table had to send their fish dishes back, the fish clearly should not have been served. The staff dealt with this very well, but the kitchen should not have served these dishes in the first place. We just got the impression that the staff were doing what they could but there was no one senior who cared about either the food or the customer service. However we saw the Northern Lights when we left, stunning!

We came across the Stein Inn on the way from Dunvegan Castle to Oronsay and decided to stop for a midday coffee. With it's fascinating decor (look out for all the trinkets the owner has collected from India and Tibet) chatty staff, great book collection and warm fireplace, we couldn't resist booking a place for dinner that evening. We are both vegetarian so we found the lentil dish in particular, to be some of the best vegetarian food on the Island. The prices were similar to the rest of the island and they had a good beer selection also. If it was warm enough we would definitely have sat and had a drink outside, the views are stunning. Hopefully it will be when we visit again! Shy and Rose x

We had dinner here on Wednesday evening. There was a lack of staff and I believe first nights for a couple of the staff, which showed. There didn’t seem to be much managing of staff and we had to ask for water several times before going up to the bar myself for a glass of water. The food was disappointing. We really expected more! The pea and ham soup was probably the best thing we had! Even then we had to ask for the bread that was supposed to come with it. The risotto starter was good too, but the lobster claw was uninspiring. For mains two of us had lobster tail. Which came with a bit of salad and chips. The lobster itself was bland and overpriced at £42. Really expected something mouthwatering for that money! The fish cake was enormous and really would have been more acceptable as two small cakes. It came served with peas and a big dollop of mashed potato, despite requesting chips instead of mash. The plate was whisked away and returned with mash scraped off and a bowl of chips on the side! Overall we felt the dinner was expensive and underwhelming for what we had. We thought it would be much better considering it being owned by Paul Rankin, but it’s pretty obvious he doesn’t have any control over the food prepared there. We don’t mind paying for a good meal, but when you walk out of a place feeling you’ve been shortchanged, there’s something not quite right there. Is Covid to blame? Seems to be the excuse everywhere these days!

Ordered starters, these arrived but no cutlery, had to ask two different members of staff before any arrived. All mains arrived at different times. Two of our party ordered the Sunday roast beef for £25, we expected something a little bit special, unfortunately it wasn’t, I was further disappointed to be told they had run out of horseradish sauce.Beef was tender but very fatty, overcooked parsnips and soggy Yorkshire pudding. Two of our party did enjoy their meals, the fish cake and the hot smoked salmon salad. Later as we drove past the Inn we observed customers leaving carrying drinks. Not sure if it was alcohol or not. However they were carrying full glasses. Also cups. Is this how visitors should be treated. It was our first visit to the village. I left thinking it would be my last. However we had a better experience up the hill above the village.

We visited for dinner two nights ago. The setting is spectacular, stunning views even though it was a ‘soft’ evening- at Alex suggestion we sampled a delicious local gin outside, taking in the rustic beauty of Skye’s oldest pub. Inside the bar is gorgeous cosy and eclecticly decorated by owner Charlie- would love to return in the winter with the roaring firestick d candles burning! My partner and I had dinner- fantastic food, freshly cooked. Chowder replete with perfectly cooked seafood and a splendid seafood linguine featuring the best produce Skye has to offer. Freshly baked bread and Isle of Skye delicately salted butter. Locally sourced home grown tomatoes were superlative. I don’t usually have dessert but had to squeeze in an awesome sticky toffee pudding! My bf also tried a delicious scotch egg with free range eggs from hens fed prawn shells. As for the staff- we arrived as strangers and left as friends! Alex is a superior barman and hunted in the cellars for a specific wine for us. Roxy and Clemence our waitresses were professional, friendly and informative and front of house Charlie took time out for a lovely chat. We didn’t want to leave and will definitely be back!!Tell all your friends- this place is special!

We all had Sunday lunch (£22), service was good and waitress was friendly. However the Roast dinner was lukewarm, the beef was far from tender and the Yorkshire pud was clearly reheated and very greasy. The bar wasn’t able to provide many of the beers/lagers on tap. Altogether a very disappointing visit. We were here last year and I still remember The Venison I had. Clearly new management/chef. Definitely give it a miss.

No food on offer other than crisps, ice cream and a meagre offering of cake, shocked as we were there for a 1pm show and had travelled over an hour thinking we would be fine for lunch at the theatre. Staff were fine, no hint of getting things done in a timely fashion and not much interaction with customers. Decor is depressing, such a big space makes it cold and echoey. Just no atmosphere whatsoever. Very disappointed and won't be back.

A lovely restaurant with nice food and lovely helpful staff. A spacious restaurant with great views. On offer was fish and chips, macaroni cheese, steak and mushroom pie, beef and haggis olives.

Avoid this place . Poorly cooked frozen fish and staff who see you as sn inconvenience. They add a 10% service charge and offer rubbish service.
