Stag & Hounds in North Somerset

Absolutely awful food. Waited 1.5 hours for it to be served. This meal was pre-ordered , so you would think that when you book a table, you are not put on a table in the bar that only seated 8 people when our party was 10. The roast dinner, ( microwaved) was very poor quality, Raw carrots items missing from plates. Cabbage so full of vinegar it was inedible. Watery gravy, no sauces offered to accompany the meal . £15 for this, really not acceptable. No house wine, but no offer of reducing the extortionate price of £.8.50. Chose wine as lager served was flat charged £5.50 which was returned and no apology. Lemonade 1/2 pint charged £4.00 . When are concerns were made to the Manager, her manner was very rude and quite upsetting. Needless to say we will never return to this so called Eatery. I also suggest that the Manager may want to attend a hospitality course, as the way we were spoken to was appalling. This is the 2nd time we have given the new managers a chance. There won’t be a third. Very disappointing Mothers Day 🥲

Having been up all night at a hospital in Bath we just needed some food on the way home but most places closed for the afternoon. So gave Stag & Hounds a try as it looked open (idea - clear and visible signing for a restaurant on a busy main road identifying that it is open in the afternoon might get more business?) The eating area was very clean and tidy. Standard "pub grub" but well presented and very tasty. Don't mind paying in advance but never give a tip as at that sage I don't know what the service and food are like. If I'd had the opportunity at the end I would probably given a tip (idea - it looks like you will soon be able to order and pay at the table by the app and presumably you will have the email address - this could be a good time - after the meal - to solicit tips?).

Part of 10. Our meals booked in advance. Firstly booked for 5pm. After a delay with our table which was sorted. It seemed another customer was late therefore pushing us to a temporary table. All our party was reseated.our food actually arrived at 6.30pm. Whilst the steaks were nice I can't say the same about the roast lunches. Hard uncooked carrots. No mash on some plates.red shredded cabbage swimming in apple/vinegar tainted other food at first thought was pickled beetroot. Uncooked roast potatoes raw. A plate of beef roast had another type of meat - originally thought pork but turned out to be turkey. I advised the manager of problem with the roast meals. Her attitude was defensive and rude. Said she come to our table 10 times no one complained. She did NOT visit the table. The waitress asked the people @ top of table who had steak how was meal definitely NOT everyone @ table. The manager equipped no food left on plates - as the meat was put in a plastic tub for our dog the rest was scrapped onto one plate. After I informed the manager people who had roast were not happy she immediately went to the table and basically had a stand up row @ two members who tried to explain. Her attitude was very rude saying over 40 lunches no one complained. Quite frankly I don't care who had or hadn't complained. WE were complaining and she was not even apologetic or asked how could we resolve issue. I paid for two steaks advising the same waitress all paying separately however they were discussing with manager. As this is my local we have just started going back as there was a period of time food radically went downhill or only deserts available or oven food. For many weeks various excuses so we just didn't go there anymore. After we heard under new management AGAIN thought give it a go. Sadly it's no better. To add to the problem one of our party was still outside so the manager decided to bully him into paying the outstanding bill. NOT impressed you can't make someone to pay for others peoples diabolical food. She had the chance to work something out with our remaining party she chose not to! It's unfair and totally unreasonable telling him he had to pay £75 because SHE would be out of pocket SERIOUSLY. I AM MAKING A FORMAL COMPLAINT about the treatment we received together with the disgusting food.

Terrible experience today. 1) we were happy to pre order our food by email - as they asked us to because they were going to busy for mothers day. This did not seem to help because no food arrived until 1 hour and ten minutes after our table time (despite the pub being empty when we arrived at 1pm??) 2) When the food arrived, one order was wrong 3) The food was only luke warm. 4) Gravy very watery 5) Hardly any vegetables on the roast dinner. Some people had brocolli and cabbage. Some people got a couple of carrots with this. We had to ask for roast potatoes because they only put one halved baby potato on each plate. They brought out some round "potato tots" / balls when we asked for more roast potatoes. 6) The kids chicken burger was spicy (I tried it to check, so he didn't eat it) a minor point but just strange for a kids menu. Similarly the kids roast came with garlic mash with greens in it - which it did not say on the menu, so child did not eat that, or his beef which was tough and fatty. 7) when we asked for the manager to say we were not happy, she asked us how she could make us happy so we asked for free dessert which was kindly given. However a couple of desserts were unavailable, a couple came out wrong, and they missed one completely so we had to ask for it and everyone was finished by the time it came. Won't be back unfortunately. Just can't see any reason when we had pre ordered, and there was nobody in there when we arrived. Very strange

After a lot of dodgy meals we decided to try one more time and all I can say is, wow! The food quality has gotten much better! We had actually asked the lovely bar man Lewis why it had gotten much better and he said he personally fired the old head chef "Simon" because as the new manager he needed to rid of the staff who don't give the stag 10/10! Can't wait to return!

New Landlords since Christmas have certainly turned this place around for the better!!! The whole place feels warm, welcoming and friendly. Nothing seems too much trouble, that goes for all the staff. Had afew things on the menu now, and it's definitely excellent value for money, never left the place hungry. Dogs welcome too!! They've even got alittle doggy menu, which our dogs lapped up.

We chose the lunch deal (lighter bite) with dessert for +£2.50 but were told there were no desserts so had to go for the starter. The main course would have looked better on a smaller plate as being a smaller portion, it therefore looked sparse. There was a token gesture of salad. We weren't offered any alternative dessert. Food was nice and service good. Nothing about the meal encourages us to return.

Blonde barmaid… polite, friendly & very helpful on entering pub. Ordered on app Pub was very quiet… x6 simple meals took 45minutes to arrive. Presentation looked awful Battered Fish looked overcooked and was as tough as leather. The barbecue chicken was meant to come with barbecue sauce when we approached staff they just directed us to the bottle of condiments & chicken was dry & overcooked. Staff enquired how the food was we were honest & said it was overcooked he said he would let chef know… they never came back to us. On collecting up plates Portuguese ? New publican asked again how our meal was… we again explained staff were friendly but the food was awful… she said we should have sent it back… we explained we had already waited 45mins and were really hungry and were there to celebrate a birthday so didn’t want to spoil the day… instead of offering maybe free desert or a refund on the x2 awful meals or even refunding the drinks order we were offered nothing and instead made to feel like we were at fault.

Just had a lovely meal for valentine night . Staff very polite and friendly . Valentine menu 3 courses or main menu , Food hot and plenty of it , checked in on us a couple of times thought out meals .. As it was valentine night I would have like a candle maybe and some music suitable for evening . Other than that 10/10 Would recommend to friends and family

"Came in with family was greeted by a lovely man named lewis and what a welcome he gave us! Full of smiles and so polite. He showed us to our table and to come see him at the bar. He recommended some dishes and told us he's the assistant manager and that one day he'd love to be the general manager for the stag and hounds and I can see it as he's an absolute asset! Hope all the right people recognise this Lewis for all he does as he's so hard working and just so very good at his job. Will be back because of him!"

Lovely location, very clean establishment, my steak was seasoned and cooked to perfection, my only recommendation is the plate could have less garnishes, peas(could use some acidity and seasoning)and fries are more than enough.The hosts Tania and Marcus were lovely and exceed my expectations. When arrived at the restaurant we weren’t shown to the table we got told to find a table and there was no cutlery on the table ready and dirty tables everywhere. When ordering we couldn’t order what we wanted as the restaurant ran out of meats on a Sunday for a roast and they also ran out of puddings!!!! We waited over 1 hour and 45 minutes for our starters to arrive and the restaurant was empty and well when they arrived it the standard of the food and presentation was diabolical. When our main courses came the food was cold, the standard and presentation was again diabolical. The service at the restaurant was rubbish we had empty glasses and dirty plates left on our table and no one came to check to see if we were happy with the food!! At the end of our meal that we couldn’t eat we asked to speak to the manger and apparently the staff didn’t know where the manger was and told us that they personally wouldn’t eat at the restaurant and no it’s not worth over £100 for food!!!!!! We will not be visiting here again and this experience has ruined our family member birthday.

Very very bad Christmas day meal. 3 hour wait for food and no apology or anything. Just before we left we had a chat with "Lewis" raising our concerns and he says "I'm the new deputy/assistant manager and I'll make all the right changes to better this pub" what does that have any relevance to my complaint? He was more concerned about bigging up his promotion than helping listen to our complaint. Now we won't return after 8 years of being locals.

I recently ventured here from my home in the cotswolds, while on a journey to a lovely town called Burnham-on-sea. Popped in for some lunch, and the food was delicious. The staff were lovely, and the atmosphere was cosy. I would definitely recommend the stag & hounds :)

I recently visited Stag & Hounds overall, it was an enjoyable experience! The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the steak and fries. Works Christmas meal was a disaster communication was not great food was late coming out staff didn't appoligies prawn cocktail was small food was cold could nearly eat it certainly NOT going back there

It was a work Christmas meal, 11 of us. The starter's were OK, very small amount of prawns in the prawn cocktail, a thin piece of wholemeal bread seemingly from a basic loaf of bread rather than the crusty bread as advertised. The soup was good though. The roast potatoes were well overcooked on all but one plate that had them, dark brown and hard. The sprouts were rock hard and cold, same with the carrots. Tiny piece of brocoli, two slivers of parsnip. No gravey for the vegan. The ony ones that said their meals were OK but disappointing had fish or the burger. I really wish I had taken photos of the meals but didn't think of it at the time. Staff could hear what we were saying about the meals and didn't ask if everything was OK. When they were told we wasn't happy they just said sorry. A truly dreadful meal.

Disgusting that management have said the find it uncomfortable to work with gay people, sacking someone because of it and saying they are allowed their political views. Disgusting. Whenever i ate here food was terrible anyway. Found hairs in both our meals last time we visited, complained and no action taken not even a sorry!!

Great Pub food in one of the nicest looking pubs I have been into. Everything was clean and organised including the toilets and the pub has a homely and warm feeling and free parking. Well worth a stop and food was spot on, with friendly service

Food was below average all round and brought out late after people who arrived after us were being served theirs first . My partners steak sandwhich was not edible due to being full of gristle and we were told that the cut of meat they had was all the same so no point in ordering a replacement , very disappointing!!!. My five year olds garlic bread was forgotten so we also chased this only to be told it had been left under the grill and no apology given!!! After asking for the complaints procedure I was fobbed off by bar staff that the company is a partnership so you couldn't complain and was then met be a very aggressive and confrontational manager Stephen who was clearly very inexperienced . After eventually refunding my partners food with no apology for ruining our night he lost his temper and told me to petuantly 'xkeep the drinks!!!'' i had just ordered and walked off . I have lived in the area for the last ten years and will never go back and will definitely be warning everyone I know to give it a wide birth whilst this the food and current manager Stephen are so poor!!!!!

Ever since nikki left place hasn't been the same and now after seeing it got a 2 star hygiene rating won't return seems like Lewis should be the manager he is the saving grace he is attentive hard working and should get more recognition

After being taken away by my daughter for a treat we were told by many people to try the stag & hounds upon arrival we noticed the bar had a wonderful atmosphere the staff ana management were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble we ordered food and drinks the drinks were amazing and cold the food was delicious nice and hot and cooked to perfection

So I enquired on Facebook if it was true they had received a 2 star hygiene rating. If untrue I would have booked but instead my comment was deleted and I was blocked from the Facebook page??? I also noticed another post said it had 27 comments but there was only 19 which means they were deleted also. How childish does the manager have to be by deleting negative constructive criticism and questions? Does he/she think by removing all negative comments that the problem will just go away? Only likes positive comments? Well here it is. Can't delete a review like a comment. I suggest the manager grows up.

Came for drinks with my uni friends for drinks and was approached by the manager who offered us all free drinks to leave a good review for him but said I couldn't have one because he already gave out so many to the table which singled me out so I'm doing the opposite now because that wasn't fair at all Edit to the reply: This is the right business as my friends had already put up the reviews you had asked as promised so since you left me out I did the opposite. Don't give out free drinks then lie about it.

Having not been here for years as it had gone downhill..... We were pleasantly surprised, having booked a table for 4 at short notice, we were warmly greeted and shown to our table , all the food was freshly cooked and hot, it was warm and cosy with subtle decorations. We will be back.

Empty pub and little to no atmosphere. Decorations looked nice but cold inside. The Welsh worker had a bit of a passive aggressive attitude problem when ordering but maybe I was overthinking it. What happened to Nikki? She wouldn't let the standards drop so low! She was a fantastic manager, whoever runs it now needs retraining to bring up a better standard of service and have some more people visiting to eat. Probably not coming back.

Visited tonight and the food was very hot and quite tasty my wife ate all too and she has a very small appetite! Reasonable priced drinks especially when the Swan up the road charging nearly 6.40 for a pint of thatchers! Reason for the deduction in stars is upon ordering the bar man with the crucifix tattoo decided pouring a drink of Pepsi and drinking it for 15 seconds was more important than saying hello back. He was friendly to be fair but said he's having a bad day as he feels he does more work than anyone and doesn't get recognised and is now told he has to work harder and is fed up. I understand jobs can be stressful but it sort of made us a little uncomfortable but this hasn't put us off returning :)

Waited 40 minutes for our food, we asked how much longer it would be and it came instantly then, all stone cold, lack of communication from staff, when asking about a dessert error was told by the manager he would find out where it was, he then didn't return with an answer but was behind the bar talking to other staff. It wasn't even busy. Nearly 2hrs later and £170+ wasted. I would avoid! Clearly the staff don't care about good service. REPLY TO RESPONSE. We were asked if we would like our food "heated up" not replaced/new/fresh. I suggest you get new probs as they seem to be broken. Another member of staff did not come to explain about the desserts, we stopped her as she walked by. I appreciate your response, but please do not respond with dishonesty.

(posting for somebody that had troubles getting here) Came in today and was disappointed Sarah isn't here anymore? She was attentive, amazing hard working and very accommodating and polite. She was what made the Stag and Hounds special where did she go? Place would be busier if she was still there and I bet wherever she is now is busy and in good hands.

Very poor experience this afternoon. We had a table booked for 15 people at 2pm, arrived and took our seats, the place looked empty. After ordering drinks at the bar no mention of issues with the kitchen. When we went to order food, we were told they weren't taking food orders at the moment. No phone call before hand or mention from any staff when we walked in. When they did start to take more food orders at about 3.15pm there was a wait of over an hour. Bickering behind the bar between the staff. Won't be coming back again. Waste of space and time.

Glad to hear that the new manager was “temp” he has no people skills. Wouldn’t even say ‘Hello’ when we walked into the pub. I have visited this pub before when Sarah was the manager and always had a warm welcome the staff seemed happy and motivated then. I returned on the basis of that good experience and I have been bitterly disappointed since.

Great place to go for good value pub grub! Staff were excellent, couldn't do enough for us. Would definitely visit again!! Good job guys

Update, the pub is now under temporary management yet again.. and to top things off they've now got a EHO rating of two stars!! I wouldn't ever try this place again, it used to be a amazing pub back when Paul ran it

Shocking establishment, I used to visit this place many years ago and it used to be a gold mine! Now it’s dilapidated and dirty, business is most certainly NOT booming and the management have quite clearly driven this once bustling pub into an empty shell. My food was awful, my chips was over done with black bits on so clearly the oil isn’t being regularly changed. My lemonade just tasted like soda despite asking for it to be changed I was just given the same, and to top it all of my well done sirloin was cold and pink still in the middle!! The staff was miserable, no check back was done and my table wasn’t cleared.. the floors was filthy old food all over and under the booths and as for the toilets well I won’t even go there. It’s overpriced for what you get and would never return again, next time I drive past I would not be surprised to see a block of flats replacing this once happy place..

A very poor Sunday roast which was especially sad as it was a special day out for Mum-in-Law. The potatoes were hard and a very poor selection of vegetables - two carrots! Not wishing to make a fuss in front of Mum-in-Law, I contacted the pub when we returned home. (My husband did try at the time discreetly, but the waitress walked away whilst he was talking). They offered a complimentary meal in the future, but I explained we lived too far away to take them up on this offer. Trying to be fair, I asked for a refund for just one meal instead of three. After an initial response and several emails from myself - nothing. So disappointing and very poor customer care. Would definitely not recommend this place.

UPDATED….. I said I wouldn’t return but thought I would give them another go! The place has changed hands recently and I must say I am pleasantly surprised. The new owners have simplified a lot so as they don’t run before they can walk which is brilliant! One thing missing off of one plate (pot of sauce) so gave the feedback of chef double checking menu, received an apology and they said that could be a team effort (double checking by not just the chef) Food was enjoyable and reasonably priced, if you are expecting Michelin star food then go elsewhere. This is affordable, good food in a welcoming pub! I have left my previous review below so as to show the difference. Good luck in your new venture! We will see you soon. AVOID!! Been in here on numerous occasions and every single time something is wrong! Not sure the chef has even read the menu as the food always comes out missing something. Just been in here once again thinking ‘give them another chance as they may have improved’ nope 👎 spent £63 on food and ended up leaving to go and get a Chinese for my children and I!! I will not be back. Zero stars but not an option to give zero!!

The prawn cocktail had 5 prawns at most they forgot one of our starters and then the mains arrived while some of our party were still eating their starters. The mains arrived and were OK at best apart from the roast dinner which was dry and the yourkshire pudding was more like a Frisbee! This is the last time we will ever come here again so disappointed 😞

Sarah is really really nice she even took 20% off our bill if we mentioned her in a 5 star review and told us to mention they should bring lunch jackets and sandwiches so if head office see high demand they will add them to the menu will definitely be back

Dog friendly, with a dog menu. Staff were great. Food was good. My only moan was on both nights they didn't have eggs for the gammon. But there was enough choice on the menu to choose from. 2 great meals

Do they all sit in a room munching on crayons deciding "how can we hire the least experienced and worst manager for our pubs, let's somehow do worse than the previous" this restaurant is doomed for closure because they can't seem to hire anyone with any managerial experience. My 8 year old could do a better job than. Food is worse than it was months ago and not one member of staff have any conversational skills. Disaster!!!

Awful and so disappointing, we have not been here for a few years but we used to love this place, but won't be returning! the service was awful, food was barely edible, cold peas, chips seemed like they were days old and just reheated, we ask for a medium rare steak which was burnt! way to expensive for the rubbish we were served.we should have taken notice to the reviews before eating here. Kitchen nightmares comes to mind here. I would not recommend and avoid at all cost. now ended up with food poisoning and can't stop throwing up!

After a terrible time a few months ago where they kept shutting the kitchen and running out of meals I heard a new manager has taken over. With mixed opinions some saying it's not much better but for me the kitchen is open so it must be in better hands. I was so wrong. Belligerent staff standing around chatting after waiting ages for my food. The food itself looked liked it was microwaved by a clown who can't even operate such simple machinery. Somehow whoever has taken over is doing an even worse job than the previous blonde owner who I didn't think could run a bath let alone a pub. So I should've listened to the opinions of others saying don't bother going. Never coming back and the company that owns this place have 0 idea how to hire "managers" with any sort of capabilities or experience in running a small establishment. What an embarrassment.

Every time a new owner takes over I come to try it out and it ends up being worse than the last. Shambles. Not giving this place anymore money, company needs to hire real managers.

Didn't go in as saw the reviews which speaks a lot about a place so never gonna try it out

Great service and great hospitality and the staff especially James always goes that extra mile on a special occasion we wouldn't go anywhere else and the food is always excellent 😀
