This is a volunteer-run cafe in the centre of Whitehaven. It is situated below the tower of St. Nicholas Church, which was partially destroyed by fire some years ago. Everybody is welsome to this wonderful piece of church outreach.

Was invited by a couple of friends to join them for a special Afternoon Tea and wasn’t sure what to expect as have visited the cafe for lunch previously and have always found it an oasis of calm in a busy day Afternoon Tea was a revelation - the room looked amazing. We started with an Amuse Bouche that was divine - a pea soup. This was followed by a selection of sandwiches that tasted fresh and were generously filled and delicious, there were also some amazing savouries like quiche and sausage rolls. I particularly liked the what looked like home made scones and some great cakes to finish All this for an impressive £11 and even included a glass of fizz. Was amazed to find out that it was the first time they has done one - hopefully it won’t be the last !!!

A nice little cake and tea room inside the Church. The cafe is run by volunteers providing nice, home backed cakes and good tea and coffe and it is very reasonably priced. A very nice change

The coffee shop is run by volunteers and it's obvious there's a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes. Lovely homemade cakes are on sale as well as homemade soup. We enjoyed the homemade soup and a toasted sandwich on our most recent visit and paid the grand sum of £5 each. The staff are very welcoming and it's a lovely atmosphere in the heart of the Whitehaven. On our visits to this lovely town we wouldn't eat anywhere else now that we've found the St Nicholas Centre.

A church in the centre of town that has a lovely menu and is managed by really friendly staff. Everything is fresh and is made to order and extremely competitively priced. Sadly on my visit, as a food bank being managed upstairs it can attract some less than savoury characters later in the day which some people might not like but the staff are amazing. Food and soup is also great - a lovely atmosphere that’s well worth a try

Small coffee shop, with extra upstairs seating. The staff are all volunteers so don't expect ultra quick service. However, the food was very nice and reasonably priced. The centre is open during weekdays 10.00 - 3.00.

Edit: been a few times and everything just keeps getting better! First time visiting the venue which is very smart and well spaced, there won't be any accidental elbow touching here. We went for the afternoon tea, which was massive and to be fair, very tasty. The scotch egg and sausage roll were great and the chicken and quiche also very good. After getting beyond those I was struggling! With three puds it was clear I would never be able to finish it all. I ate the scone which was pretty good. Not the best, but decent. The brownie and lemon posset had to come home with me in a box! Overall it was very enjoyable, although I'm not sure we can really call it an afternoon tea! In my opinion, they could easily have removed the chicken and posset and added in a small finger sandwich or two. The result would still be a very non-traditional afternoon tea, but it might have been close enough to call it one. There really should at least be a nod to cucumber somewhere in there Edit: paid another visit and went for regular menu items. The meal was lovely, a bit different and still generously sized. At lunchtime, with three of us eating, none of us actually managed to polish of our meal! The star of the show was the Thai curry, probably about as good as it gets outside an actual Thai restaurant
