We came here for Sunday Lunch. It is advisable to book as I don't think they accept walk-ins. The roast dinner (I had chicken) was absolutely amazing, really good. Prices are very reasonable. Nice cosy village pub in the middle of nowhere - make sure you search it out.

We have just returned from the Mason Arms where we had a great time. We were greeted by very friendly staff, the man behind the bar greeted us with a huge smile and the waitress was delightful. The pub was buzzing and had a lovely atmosphere. One of the locals came to chat to us and to top it off the food was delicious. We didn’t have to wait long and it was piping hot. We would definitely go again and highly recommend it. Thank you to all the staff.

Stayed in Gilcrux a few times and made sure I went here at least once. Very clean, dog friendly and the best pint of Carlsberg I’ve had. We booked the Mason’s Arms to celebrate my parents Golden Wedding Anniversary. Andy and Hal were fantastic hosts and so accommodating, allowing us to pre-book a three course meal for nine people. Everything was delicious from start to finish; we were particularly impressed with the full vegetarian Sunday lunch, including roast potatoes, a huge Yorkshire pudding and even veggie gravy! The starters and roast beef were also a hit, plus the sticky toffee pudding was incredible! We were even allowed to decorate an area of the pub with photos, balloons, and banners, making the day extra special. The Mason’s Arms is dog friendly so our cockapoo loved being part of the family celebrations. Thank you Andy, Hal and team for the amazing food and service, we’ll be back very soon!

We live locally and decided to book a table for new years eve. So we could walk the mile and half each way. Started as a table of 4 and ended up as 9 as family decided to join us. We offered to prebook as there was 9 of us. We arrived half an hour early for drinks before dinner. The table was set ready for us. The food came out red hot and plenty of it. All the food was ready at the same time and noone was left waiting. 9 clean plates. Great choice of puddings and the table finished off 7 between us. Definitely recommend. Very friendly couple and lovely environment.

We stayed at nearby Greengill for the week and made this our local. Had a drink most nights (owner remembered our order by 2nd night!) . Very friendly. Joined the locals watching the match on sky, a bingo night and also ate there. Food and drink were superb and very good value. They only serve on certain nights due to cost of living crisis. If you are in the area go support it.

Delightful very dog friendly pub just across the road from where we were staying in a caravan. We had a delicious 3 course meals plus drinks. The Thai Green Curry was the best I have had to date. Wife had the King Prawn Stir Fry which was also excellent. The host and service staff were welcoming and friendly giving a very homely feeling. Nice to go to a local pub that didn’t have loud music blazing out so able to make conversation. The locals were also very welcoming and all the doggies were well behaved. If you are passing it is really worth dropping in for a relaxing refreshment break.

This is a pub that does food. It doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t. The food is great value with portions that do not disappoint. It might look as if there is a limited menu but when you add in the pizza menu and the specials board, there will be something for everyone. There is a full range of drinks including straight beers, a mild and cider/lagers. Excellent staff. It is welcoming and true to the ethos of a proper village pub. If you are in the area, check it out.

We were made to feel really welcome by Hal and his wife, who I have forgotten the name of, so so sorry. One of our first trips out following the easing of lockdowns measures. And, what a treat! A warm welcome from the landlord and the delightful waiting staff. The tables were spaced out so we could adequately social distance. The menu has all the usual Cumbrian pub classics and several South African dishes for the adventurous. My dining partner had the Babootie and devoured it, a taste sensation he declared. I stayed safe and opted for the burger which was delicious, real depth of flavour with excellent home cooked chips. We felt immediately at home on our first visit to the Mason's Arms. It's in a charming setting in a peaceful village and the food is spot on.---Food:- Salt and pepper squid for starter was about £5, served in a simple and appealing way and tasted fantastic. - Sirloin steaks ordered for the main course, the servings were huge (see the picture) and everything on the plate was spot on. It's high quality steak from a local butcher, expertly cooked with some of the best chips I've had. We ordered classic pub dishes but there is far more than that available on the menu which I can't wait to try- Pints of local ale "Wainwright" were delicious and clearly well keptService: -Staff were very friendly and attentive, they actually ran out of steak for one of our party, so we ordered one gammon which was delicious also (even gave us a large piece of Cumberland sausage for free to make up for not having the steak which was appreciated)Atmosphere:Local feeling, very down to earth and relaxing. Plenty of space for a drink if you aren't eating and there's also a lovely beer garden out front to enjoy---Great pub, great grub, get yourself in there.

We came here for my birthday in August 2019. We booked by telephone and asked for a high chair. The table was reserved and set when we arrived, but there was no highchair. Luckily they had one spare. The menu is huge, but it is all written on a chalkboard by the bar, there are no actual menus. This was ok as it wasn’t that busy but I can imagine this area gets crowded when its busy. The food didn’t take long to arrive and the portions are massive, I had to ask for a box to take some home! The food is good and the prices were reasonable. We will visit again soon.

The menu spoke in detail of flavours and spices of different countries etc etc. However, when my curry came it was the most tasteless curry I have ever had! The rest of our group (there were 7 of us) all felt their food fell below par. Interestingly, the waitress didn’t once ask if we enjoyed our food. Because of this we only managed to share a few amazing desserts; one of which was some delicious rhubarb ice cream in a sundae. It can be busy so I recommend that you book a table.

We really enjoyed the amazing food at the Masons Arms during a large family outing. There was a great variety on the menu to suit all tastes and ages. We were made to feel really welcomed and the two toddlers in our group were kept amused by the toy area the pub has to offer. The home made curries come highly recommended and we will be back to sample more of the menu.

Joined by my son home from uni, my wife and a neighbour, we all enjoyed a terrific, oh so tasty meal at The Mason's Arms tonight, felt compelled to come on here to Trip Advisor to say just now tasty it all was. We feel so lucky to have this pub (and the Barn Bistro opposite) on our doorstep. Thanks Mike and Nadine. X

Four of us went for a meal and we were made to feel welcome and were well looked after. Pleasant pub atmosphere with a log fire stove giving out a fair amount of warmth. Orders were taken at the table and the waitress was very keen and tried hard. Two of us had chicken pie, one steak and ale pie and one scampi. The pies filling were very good thought to my mind the puff pastry cap is a bit of a negative, the chips were cooked to perfection but the steamed frozen vegetable selection let the meal down. The deserts, treacle tart and toffee fudge cake were superb.

On holiday locally, and this pub had been recommended by the owners. It isn't open until 6pm so u can't really phone and book... so when we arrived it was busy and we're told we would have a wait, but we're on holiday so that doesn't matter. The menu is massive! So many things to choose and it all sounds delicious! We had two of the South African inspired dishes, both were really lovely. Really nice local people who were very welcoming. You'll miss out if u don't go!

From the moment we entered we were made to feel at home and not a problem having our dog with us, Mike (LandLord) popped round from the Bar with a treat for him as soon as we were seated. We decided on the first night to get a takeaway and ordered a Steak (Hubby) and I tried the Durban Curry - it arrived quickly despite a number of people in the Bar ordering food, with apologies from Mike for the delay. Fantastic food!! On the second visit we decided to eat in, again we were given a lovely welcome with treats for our dog. We had the pleasure of meeting Nadine (LandLady) who is from South Africa and adds her twist to the menu and feasted on Haddock and the Seafood Basket - OMG what more can I say. We came back night after night for the food and the lovely welcome and were never disappointed; sadly we missed the Goat Curry (Nadine marinates it for 48 hours in Rum) next time - we will be back!!! By the way she makes a mean Irish Coffee too!! Start at the beginning of the menu and try it all if you get chance!!! Recommend, yes in a heartbeat and then some and more.

Stayed at Hollybank cottage (next door) with friends and decided to pop in here for a Sunday roast yesterday - excellent choice! The couple that run the pub (Mike and Nadine I think they were called) welcomed us like family and created a lovely atmosphere. This is as close you will get to going to your mums for a proper Sunday dinner! Full roast dinner with all the trimmings (and I mean everything! Turkey, gammon, amazing roasties, veg, stuffing, pigs in blankets and crackling). Then came the desserts - again completely home made, indulgent tasty goodness! (I had sticky toffee pudding, the best I've ever had). Aside from the food they offer an Excellent selection of wines and beers, open fire, music, and great company. It's a quiet little local where you could just relax and enjoy. Big thumbs up and thanks for the lovely Sunday afternoon!

My husband and I eat at The Masons Arms on a very regular basis. The food is always top notch and we have never had a bad meal or felt the need to complain. The staff are very friendly and courteous and food is served very promptly. At extra busy times, food can take a little while longer, but again, this is to be expected. The new owners are lovely people, nothing too much trouble, very friendly couple. The atmosphere is very home from home and we are always made to feel very welcome. The menu is very varied with a South African influence, thanks to Nadine. I think we have worked our way through the entire menu now and it is difficult to find a favourite meal, they are all so delicious. Very well worth a visit or two. Christine and Chris!

Visited with a friend for lunch. I ordered Sweet and SourChicken with Rice. My friend ordered the Lamb Curry. We waited ages for the food to arrive. The portions were far too big. I had to take some home. The chicken had been roasted and chopped up. There was skin and bone. The Lamb Curry also had bone in it.The Landlord was affable and the lady afterwards told us we could have had small portions. We did not enjoy the meal and will not go back.

A perfect family pub with lovely food and a friendly atmosphere. The owners are very inviting and we visited this pub on three separate occasions during our stay to the area. The food is homemade and is very tasty with a range of specials as well as the menu choices. They also cater for children with a selection of toys in a little area. The pool table and darts kept the older ones entertained. We will definitely be visiting again.

Lovely friendly independent cafe based in the church at Frizington. When we went we had booked because it gets packed out by local residents. My friend is local but I was visiting . We ordered tea for two and a lovely big pot with China cups and saucers arrived. More hot water to top up the pot no problem ! My friend had a delicious ( massive) omelette , salad and chips. I had the steak pie ( gorgeous gravy) , vegetables and again the wonderful home made chips ( best ever) . Crumbles or ginger cake with custard for dessert. I just loved the lively atmosphere . So great to see a place thriving in the north west lakes. A real hidden gem.

Due to lockdown restrictions, Truly Scrumptious has a delivery service, so this was ordered by phone, rather than a visit to the shop. Their cream tea selections are amazing! My sister ordered this for mother's day - and since we haven't seen her since October 2020, she treated me, too! Delivery was within a 2-hour time slot, and arrived in good time. Definitely recommended.

Lovely pub to go for a drink. Only pub close to where we were staying. No food served here. Dog friendly. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Close to request stop railway station. Open 2pm til pub empty. Makes sence. Friendly people.

I would highly recommend Moresby Hall. The owners were extremely accommodating and went above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible. I am a wheelchair user so was concerned about the actual accessibility of this grade 1 listed building. However they exceeded our expectations, having a designated, very well thought out, accessible apartment on the ground floor with every possible aid needed. Not only that but it was beautiful and we very much enjoyed our stay. Jane and David the owners were very welcoming, approachable and friendly, and they even made a amendment to the front door as my chair caught on a part of it. Breakfast was really nice, having a great selection to choose from and hot food made to order. One of the best breakfasts I’ve had and it felt much better than the buffet style English breakfast. The weekend went by very fast and I’d have loved to stay longer. Would highly recommend this beautiful hall as you won’t be disappointed.
