Just truly excellent! We shared all the dishes with a table of six. Everything was surprising, flavorful, and absolutely delicious! The desserts are truly amazing, and the oysters incredibly tasty. All of this in a cozy, no-nonsense setting. They also handle allergies really well — that wins my heart!

We came here for a special dinner because of its concept and because St John is undoubtedly a London institution. I’m not usually one to leave reviews less than 5 stars, but I think the service here leaves a little to be desired. The first thing is you’re offered still or sparkling water. We ordered still, and realised this was charged and that tap water was very much an option too (but not an option we were given, and which we would have taken). The food however is delicious and interesting - the chicken liver pate was a stand out for me, it was some of the best pate I’ve ever had. We ordered some mains but unfortunately were quite full from the day so left about 80% of the food (I legitimately took a bite from the two dishes and that was it). It was delicious though, and I was keen to take it home and also not waste it - for ethical but of course budget conscious reasons. I asked the wait staff if I could have the food for take away because we were too full to finish it, and unfortunately they misinterpreted as have it taken away from the table, and threw it out. This was super disappointing; I’ve worked in hospitality myself and I can appreciate the term “take away” could be confusing, but if I saw that much food left on a plate I would have offered for it to be packed too, notwithstanding having that requested. The waitstaff kindly offered us complimentary madeleines on the house (which are once again delicious) but also why offer more food when we’ve just said we’re too full? We ate about one each. Of course we could have come here with emptier stomachs but sometimes and perhaps we will if we come back again. The service charge was taken off our bill (which is ultimately a gratuity anyway?); but I left feeling pretty short changed for a bill that ended up being £120 or so. I would have much preferred to have something taken off the bill, like our drinks, instead. It was ultimately the wait staff who messed up, but we were left with the sour taste in our mouths. From reading other reviews, it seems like service is a recurring issue.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. I’m not sure whether to blame the new menu, or the lack of care in the kitchen, but eating here yesterday was the worst experience I’ve had in St John (my third time here btw). I’ve always left satisfied in the past, by flavour, by presentation, by creativity and by value. Last night our meal was devoid of every aspect. Spending £180 on a meal and drinks should come with some semblance of satisfaction. There was none. Every dish felt like it was thrown on the plate in a messy rush, with unwashed salad tossed in heaps of overpowering dressing, inconsistently cooked meat, burnt desserts and sauces, cocktails that tasted different on repeat order. I’m actually astounded that the same place I have enjoyed multiple phenomenal meals at has delivered such an unpleasant experience.

I normally never write bad reviews for places especially for such establishment we all know to be amazing. However, it’s been my third time there and the food has been seriously lacking. I’m a chef myself and i’m incredibly sad saying this but wether it’s the over seasoned salad dressing, the three depressed peices of pigeon and dirty radish we got, the toast being so filled with anchovy it leaves no space for any other ingredient to come through, the incredibly dry and overly sour cream with delicate chocolate cake, the burnt butterscotch sauce giving an acidic slap to your tongue or the drinks that tasted different and less strong each time even if we had orders the same one. Receiving our plates felt like being in a simple diner being given the same food as anyone else without attention or care. The front of house staff were amazing, attentive and clean but the kitchen is not up to the standard we are used to at st John. Seriously disappointed especially after paying 180£ for food that wil be remembered for being awful.

One of the best meals of my bloody life. Everything was absolute perfect. The amount of craft it takes to transform humble ingredients into small masterpieces of pure flavour is astonishing. Good job to the whole team of young chefs. Really a true gem of English cuisine that must be protected and celebrated at any cost.

Rude and Unprofessional Service I arrived on time for our reservation, but when my friend arrived 10 minutes late due to a train closure, we were met with unprofessional and unnecessarily rude behavior from a female staff member who appeared to be in a managerial role. While we understand the importance of efficient service, the way we were treated was completely inappropriate. As soon as my friend sat down, the staff member abruptly insisted that we place our food order immediately, despite our polite request for a moment so my friend could look at the menu. When we asked if she could leave the drink menu with us while she gathered the rest of the menus, she responded with a dismissive expression, placed the menu down without a word, and walked away. This interaction left us feeling disrespected and uncomfortable. Hospitality should be about creating a welcoming experience for guests, and unfortunately, that was not the case here.

I came here last night without a booking and managed to get seated at the bar. Too many lovely looking things on the menus to choose between, so went with the recommendation from a member of staff and had a lovely potted rabbit followed by roast mangalitza, both of which hit the spot perfectly. Great food, friendly staff, will definitely be back on the rare occasions I'm in London.

There’s nothing new one can say about institutions apart from how they evolve. And with this, I think, it’s not about modernisation or keeping it old school, but it’s being real, basic, practical, down to earth and simply good. Sometimes the best approach to preserve and conserve is exactly that :) Like my late professor used to say - Simplify without further simplification. As a boarding school kid it took me straight back to mess times (apart from my father’s love for offal). I went nearing closing, lunch, chicken livers on toast and some chocolate cake. Wanted some food in my tummy with my non blow dried hair and few grocery lists to sort out and hopefully I did blend it with the canteen style goodness. If doing desserts I suggest you choose carefully (or miss) especially if solo and you don’t really have a sweet tooth - they are meant for sharing for the richness, luscious, indulgent. Definitely not for a work lunch for me. Glorious slobbering of liver on toast plus extra toast and butter on the house. And the vibe is unparalleled - families, work meetings, solo- Everything an eatery should be. Just blend it with the furniture.

Love the concept of a no nonsense white plates and pared back experience where the food speaks for itself. The only issue with that is there is no place to hide if the food is not exceptional. Unfortunately, the rabbit dish was a bit dry ( rabbit is a notorious unforgiving meat to cook). Madeline’s were warm and delicious as was the Eccles cake with cheese. Other main was the pigeon which was lovely. A Sunday roast special would be a brilliant addition for this location.

Great experience as usual. The vesper martini was sensational. The smoked cods roe and egg was a staple as per, but the real highlight was the grilled sea leeks with aioli that came with the black bream main dish, will be trying to recreate that at home. The chickpeas with spinach and yoghurt starter was quite a dud though, unbalanced with far too much acidity and heavy handedness with the Worcestershire sauce (I believe?). Avoiding dishes like this one is half the battle when dining at St. JOHN, and when you're paying these prices it's what makes the difference between a good meal and a great one.

Visited St. John Bread and Wine on the evening of March 9th, and while the food was fantastic, the service was not. My partner and I ordered the Rabbit and Smoked Bacon Pie, and it was absolutely delicious, and totally worth the 45 minute cook time. The issue was the lack of service. We only saw our server 3 times at our table. We requested a refill of water early on which we had to wait 15 minutes for before flagging down someone else to help us. When it came time for the check, we told our server we weren’t interested in dessert and asked for the bill, but after waiting several minutes and with the restaurant emptying out, we had to get up to pay ourselves. Meanwhile our server was polishing water glasses behind the bar. Seems like that took precedent over us. The person who took our payment apologized, saying our server must have misunderstood us. Then when I mentioned we asked for the bill she said she may have just forgotten. Just like with the water. Go for the food but be prepared to be forgotten.

For the second Valentines Day in a row, St John has made my heart flutter💓 thank you to my wonderful boyfriend for taking me here again! :) I love Bread and Wine, it’s so bright and lively, and people-watching here is peak! The service is superduper friendly. Do beware that the dishes take a little while to come out but I think that adds to the experience, reminding us to take things slowly and cherish the flavours one by one! Fun fact I was gifted the Nose to Tail cookbook by a friend yesterday so I was really excited to try some featured dishes, and I went home totally inspired. I had a glass of the house rosé, a type of wine I rarely *adore*, but their version is perfectly balanced and fresh. Considering getting a bottle for home. To start we had beetroot, cabbage, creme fraiche and chervil. My boyfriend went ham for this, I was also very satisfied with it! I felt it matched my Lithuanian heritage, reminded me much of the flavours of my childhood summers. A sweet and crisp plate of veggies. Chervil should be used more in salads. The creme fraiche is such a noughty touch and it is absolutely divine. The second starter, smoked cod’s roe, egg, and cress, reminded me rather of my Swedish side. It came with the crispiest accordion-shaped potatoes, with a mushy interior. The whole dish was salt perfection, with the soft egg giving you a little break. It was really like a deconstructed Swedish egg & caviar sandwich, with the watercress adding a British earthy touch. Balanced and unique! If you’re feeling like lamb, I urge you to try it here. The remaining bit of my heritage, Norwegian, was evoked by the mutton. It was marvellously flavourful and fatty, there wasn’t even any need to put aioli on the plate, the lamb does all the work. I wanted to inhale the lentils and sauce it was so good and nostalgic. The mussels were of course also splendid, I loved the way the cider shone through the broth, and the dill added lightness and finesse. We ordered chocolate cake for dessert which felt like the pinnacle of chocolate cake, irresistably smooth all throughout, rich but not overly sweet, especially when paired with creme fraiche. I must attempt this at home. We also brought home some of their reputable madeleines, their buttery batter made them feel like pancake-biscuits, served as a wonderful breakfast the day after! If it wasn’t for financial restraint I would go to St John every week. I hope to return next year at least! 💓 Love you lots!

Overrated. I'd put off going for a few years and then finally went and it was mediocre. The service was good, the food disappointing. Exceptionally cheap cuts of meat priced extravagantly. Really lazy sauces combinations: the cheapest most vinegary mustard put with a venison croquette completely overpowered any other taste. I presume they save a few pence doing it this way. Very vinegary pickles as walnuts, had reflux for the rest of the day which i dont usually have. The decor is looking tired, The bathrooms are clean but somehow remained grim. I wouldn't go again and since going, I've heard that the place has lapsed. I now know it to be the case. A shame!

This is the most overhyped and overrated restaurant I’ve ever been to. The food is like when I’d cook it at home on a very bad day. Ordered liver on toast and the liver came in a form of very watered down pate - probably enhanced with a lot of butter or cream so there was no liver flavour at all. All of the pickles are so acidic they are a health hazard with such an amount of vinegar. The faggots - which are basically haggis shaped as meatballs, were served with overcooked turnip. The venison starter was good but extremely salty and served on a blob of acidic mustard. The service was great but I’d never go there again. What a disappointment

Hare was very good. Nice touch Lancashire cheese with the Eccles cake. Struggling to categorise the cheese - it didn’t fit either the “tasty” or “crumbly” variants but maybe my cheese-memory has been corrupted by Swaledale, the queen of war of the roses cheeses. Wine list quite extensive and prices not as off-putting as many restaurants, but almost all French: no Rioja (sigh) nor, from memory, Italian so I struggled here but ended up in Catalonia.

Just to preface, I love St John in Smithfield but haven’t been back in a few years. Food like this is expensive and we don’t have the privilege to eat out like this regularly, but as it was a special occasion, we came to this branch as the other was full. The service was as expected, very nice, if a little too cool for school. Great buzzy atmosphere and lovely St John wine. However the food was incredibly disappointing and lived nowhere near up to our last experience. The food on the whole was incredibly salty. The Welsh Rarebit is a classic and hard to mess up but the cheese was unusually strong (salty) and lacked much depth of flavour. Splashing Lea & Perrins over it just made it even more savoury. We finished the jug of water extremely fast. The toast was burned underneath. Unfortunately, the pig cheek was near inedible. I can’t tell if the pig was brined or cured beforehand? But again, insanely salty, the skin was tough and near impossible to cut and eat. It should’ve been carved much smaller but it was mostly rock hard salty lumps. The meat came dressed in a dandelion salad with radish — I thought that would alleviate some of the saltiness, but it too was smothered in a salty vinaigrette. Very very unpleasant. We also had the squash with green sauce and ricotta. The squash seemed like it was steamed and perhaps a bit undercooked, the flesh of the vegetable was mealy, like a dry paste when chewed, and the ricotta just added to this cloying mouthfeel. There was an oil based sauce underneath that added to the heaviness of the dish. It just didn’t work for us and seemed a really misjudged use of ingredients. We were going to get dessert but were so disappointed with the food we just got the bill. Such a shame not to come away feeling satisfied. It felt like we just ate a week’s worth of salt and fat without much balance of flavour or care for the ingredients. The food wasn’t as thoughtful as last time and it’s tainted St John for me because at those prices, I really can’t justify it. We were going to let them know, but none of the staff actually asked us how the food was.

Simple modern decor does not get in the way of the focus on outstanding British cooking. We came here for a Christmas lunch from the seasonal Feasting Menu. The highlight of this was a whole goose prepared two ways with excellent goose fat mash and gravy, certainly the best goose I have tasted. I really enjoyed the starter of smoked cods roe with radishes, an odd combination that worked (there was bread available too), but not to the taste of everyone in our group. Dessert was an apple and quince crumble with custard to die for. The wine list is worth mentioning, a very long list of reasonably priced but often obscure French wines. Don't ignore the house wines either as they are carefully curated blends that offer exceptional quality for their price.

Specially booked St John from reading reviews and also a friend recommended it personally. But for all the anticipation, the food though not bad, did not live up to the hype. We read so much about their bread, but it was average really. Butter was nice though. We ordered the Crispy goose and it was not fantastic and which part was the crispy we wondered. White cabbage was so-so and the saddleback was really below average to my party of five. We also ordered the crab. Mayo was lovely and went well with the cold crab. We also ordered the sardine toast. What we really liked was their side order of chips, and their date pudding with the Expresso cream? Madeleines served warm was good too.

I had a wonderful pre-holiday lunch with my wife! The cocktails were spot on. The partridge was cooked the way I like it. The staff were whirring about like madmen and women but never missed a beat, were attentive to every detail, and knew what I wanted before I even did. Thanks for the wonderful holiday send off!

Great as ever. From anchovy toast, beetroot and pickled walnut to cod’s roe, mutton, and bone marrow, all excellent.

This was my second visit and both trips were excellent. I have also been to the original restaurant on St John Street and both are excellent but different. Bread and Wine is slightly more informal that St John Street but like the parent has excellent food, wine and service.

Incredible food! Couldn’t fault it and not quite like any meal I’ve ever had before - even though the food was simple and understated. Less is more here.

Such a great place, every bit as good as the Smithfield mothership.

The second time here and still love it. You can find food like Ox heart and other interesting ones. Not too complicated but very nicely done. The menu is changing and never boring. They have a good winelist. If you want to eat traditional English styled food in a modern manner come here. You will be thrilled.

The foods were good but not to the expectation vs its hype! The portion size of the mains were smaller than I would expected for the price paid. Overall still nice restaurant and the staffs are friendly. Very good extensive wine list.

Food was delicious (crab toast, partridge, smoked cod, cauliflower and leek, pigs cheek, squid - only one I might skip next time, ginger loaf which was like a sticky toffee pudding) Service was poor (our server was very rude) and overall very casual - wouldn’t return for this reason

St. John Bread and Wine is such a special place for us. We went on our first date over 13 years ago and have returned for special occasions ever since. The place has retained everything that makes it wonderful over those years, whilst changing the menu daily and always service delicious, interesting and somethimes unusual flavour combinations. The vibe and the atmosphere is perfect, the staff are all lovely and really knowlegable about the food and drinks. Its a fabulous place. :)

Estaba literalmente bien.

Great atmosphere and some excellent takes on British classics. Everything we ordered was good and the place has a great atmosphere, but nothing blew me away. I’d especially recommend the grilled artichokes!
