Magical and niche environment, excellent beers and excellent music Definitely worth a visit if you are in Edinburgh

Avoid. Great space but incredibly unwelcoming bartender who was not only rude to us but to his staff as well.

Very cozy and nice pub. Definitely the best we visited in Edingburgh. Nice and fun service. Nice with a small welcome greeting in the form of a small glass/cup of beer. We were there just as it opened and lucky to get a small table.

Cool space. Terrible service. Barman is extremely rude. Rude to customers and his coworkers.

Eclectic little place with a wide selection of drinks. There is so little space you end up sharing a table with others, which is great because everyone is so friendly. Mixed tourists, and locals.

We love this place, as do all our visitors that we bring in. It’s become a family favourite. If you don’t want to have interesting conversations with people you don’t know, tucked into quirky corners, this may not be for you. I highly recommend you get over it and share a table as the owner requests. We’ve met some lovely folks over the years by doing just that.

This has to be the quirkiest and potentially most unique pub in Edinburgh. Two floors with endless things to look at and a speakeasy vibe upstairs. Extensive cocktail menu, good beer selection and really friendly staff. Recommend!

Get in, get cosy and enjoy a few ambrosial libations. There’s a common theme between the one-star reviewers. And it’s that they’re all bellends. St Bernard’s Bar is a quirky, charming and individualistic establishment. If you want standard pints and crisps, go elsewhere.

Always smells bad inside that pub. They have incredible mocktails, and cocktails! Probably the best mocktail selection in Edinburgh. Cozy space upstairs. Unique German beer.

If you like pretentious bars with inflated prices this is the place for you. Pub used to be a good un before current owner took over. Avoid.

Possibly the most interesting pub we have ever visited, with ummagumma playing on vinyl as we drank this place also definitely ranks the most trippy place we have ever visited as well. Only popped in for one drink and left ever so slightly inebriated 3 hours later, the decor is just amazing and only adds to the atmosphere and the staff are fantastic, don’t pass by without visiting St Bernard’s Bar, its very unique and like nothing we have ever experienced., good luck if you are only popping in for one drink.

Used to be better by far. This should be a pub. You're forced to table service and that's that. Don't expect walk ins. Don't spontaneously come here. Your expectations will be ruined. Can't stand at the bar and chat either! Oh well. It is what it is...

Special find! What a cozy, rustic, hearty pub. Feels very personal, you share tables with others which makes for a very social atmosphere. Handwritten menus, great tunes, big drinks. Highly recommend.

Great pub for some fancy beverages It's definitely more upmarket than your standard lager on tap style joint, without being over the top (or overly expensive). We had, Lavender appletini mocktail, this was nice, but felt like it was missing something. Possibly would have been better with flavour from alcohol if it hadn't been a mocktail - but I was driving. Wasn't too keen on the lavender bits just floating on top, but the flavour paired OK with apple. Maybe could have been better with some of lavender syrup instead and then just a single sprig for garnish. 6/10 Virgin mojito, it's a classic and it was done well. Not much else to say, all the ingredients were fresh and work well together, 8/10 There was a great selection of drinks to choose from, so I would definitely come back another time to try out more cocktails. The bartenders were so nice, and really went above and beyond. My wife was eyeing up the watermelon someone else had as garnish for their cocktail and asked if she could buy one as a snack - they said unfortunately they don't sell that separately, but then just went ahead and gave her one, which was greatly appreciated! The decor in the pub has that style of 'pack as many cooky things on the walls as possible' vibe, which is always fun. They were blasting a Smashing Pumpkins album (note: whole album. these people have class) which definitely contributed to the cool vibes - I would only say it was a touch too loud.

Popped in here on a whim for a quick drink to escape the rain and found comfortable seating in a nicely decorated bar. Staff is really the standout here though and they were super friendly and gave us a rundown of their cask ales and explained the finer details between the options available with great patience and care. Would highly recommend this spot!

Great bar. When you walk in you’re greeted by a friendly, eccentric owner - and seated to suit the number of guests, which makes sense in a small establishment. Anyone who doesn’t like this should go elsewhere! Decor is really quirky, sample drinks offered, and a lot of thought has gone into making this an interesting and fun experience. Recommended.

Our last night in Edinburg Scotland, and the best place to enjoy our last night here! Really cool ambiance and decor, and wonderful service from absolutely charming bartenders.

This pub was such a lovely place to finish our trip in Edinburgh ! The ambiance is very heartwarming, the bartenders are extremely sweet and welcoming, beers and cocktails are very good and out of this world. Don't hesitate to check this place out !!!

Had a nice Sunday morning walk with my wife in Stockbridge and decided to pop in for a pint. The pub was pretty empty, with only a few guests, and my wife was admiring the interesting decor upstairs. Suddenly, we were told by the owner that 'we can go upstairs for a look but not sit there because he is lazy.' I thought it was a joke, so no problems, but then he insisted we sit in a really small corner with no table, which made my wife uncomfortable with the way the owner spoke to us. He noticed that and then pointed to a bigger table, saying we could sit there but would have to share it with others if more guests arrived. The entire conversation was very rude and aggressive, so my wife and I decided to leave the premises. The owner got mad, started shouting at us, and blamed us for leaving simply because we didn't want to sit where he had arranged. His shouting drew a lot of attention both inside and outside of the pub, and we felt pretty embarrassed. We were nice and polite throughout the incident. The owner (male, sideburn around 60-70 years old, thematically dressed) has some personality issues that need to be addressed. It's the rudest service I have seen as someone who lives in Edinburgh locally. I highly don’t recommend anyone visit this pub.

The owner of this bar is extremely rude and obnoxious. Although the upstairs bar was completely empty, we were ordered to move tables, as our party did not have the right amount of people for the table we sat at. I am a local, there are far better options, and I will never be buying another drink in here again.

A very nice bar, decorated with a very eclectic taste. The cocktails are good, very fine and smooth. I ordered one with rosemary which was very herbal and refreshing on the warm Edinburgh evening.

(Earlier open times during the Fringe!) An absolute must do when in Edinburgh, you couldn't ask for more style and atmosphere when stopping for a drink. The service is top quality with every drink being served with utter class. A true gem

One of the rudest bar managers I’ve ever had the displeasure of meeting. On arriving, I was instructed to sit, brought a sample of beer I was told to drink and enjoy and when I asked if I might have a glass of wine instead, was told to leave immediately. Confused, I enquired what the issue was with wine instead of beer. Naturally (and he’s right) I was told no explanation was needed and I should leave. First time in nearly 40 years of frequenting licensed premises I’ve been asked to leave a bar. Gotta be a first time for everything I suppose. A hugely arrogant and unpleasant man who runs it & I cannot recommend the bar less which is a shame as it’s lovely inside.

This has become my favourite place in Edinburgh. Special thanks to the very kind staff for their flexibility. I had a super evening here.🍸🤟👌 The spicy margarita took me off my feet🥰

You need to grab a few drinks here. Jo at the bar spinning vinyl and pouring drinks is a must see.

Worst pint I’ve had in Edinburgh, owner/bar man was a weirdo

Really quirky, cosy and fun bar. Loads of atmosphere with all the random decorations floor to ceiling. A good selection of ales, cocktails and whisky.

This bar captures the word "eclectic" in the most fun and approachable way possible. Great cocktails and amazing ales.

Last October, I was judged based on my appearance on arrival and embarrassingly escorted out of the bar. I had been painting my workplace throughout the day and wished only to relax with some drinks at the end of the evening. I may have looked a bit messy or casual. I tried to pop back in to explain I was a local and lived nearby. The police were then called. I was arrested and then appeared in court today. The crown immediately ceased prosecution. The barmaids temperaments and snobby, pretentious attitudes ultimately caused me my first appearance in court. In court it was read that based on my appearance I was "not the usual type of clientele". The initial elaborate statement crumbled at court despite foolish comments about me being 'scary' which were not asked for or acknowledged by the court. Accusing a man who had done not a thing wrong of being threatening is absolutely disgusting and people like this are what make the legal system and legitimate cases so hard to interpret. This bar is the most toxic, pretentious and inflammatory experience I have ever had. You should be ashamed for wasting everyone's time as a direct result of hostility towards customers of different backgrounds and seriously review the way you treat your customers because it certainly doesn't show dignity, respect or compassion in any way. Hard pass on St Bernard's bar.

No food only snacks but you can buy pies from the local butcher or Greggs along the road and eat in the bar! Lots of beers to choose from inc Edinburgh Black and Kwak. Quite pricey however Quirky characters serving in cosy surrounding. Plus jazzy blues piped music. Quite convivial although I was told I was being "aggresive" for no apparent reason. Possibly the barman enjoys provoking a reaction.

A wonderful discovery. Attracted by the choice of playing vinyls, we were transported to a magnificent establishment which serves good beers. The atmosphere was warm, local. The "secret" room for cocktails was very beautiful. We recommend !

Not sure how best to explain this but you should definitely visit even once. Closest thing I can think of is Philleas Fogges in covent garden. The barman who I assume is the landlord was quirky and charming. It's very random with the added bonus of Hawkwind in the background. You kinda need to go to experience it, good fun If you find this useful please hit like, I'm trying to be an expert reviewer 🤣

Looks like a lovely bar, they play good music too but it was very dirty. Alot of dust and toilets were filthy.

We've been twice now, and on both occasions we've told the bartender to make something crazy and non alcoholic. They delivered 3 out of 4 times. Very intimate, and we were seated relatively quickly on a Saturday night. Love their specials menu as well. Hugo sprints spritz was stellar

This place is FANTASTIC! I would urge anyone who is visiting Edinburgh to check this place out! The vibes are immaculate and the barmaid Blue is an angel - so lovely and knowledgeable about the drinks as well as recommendations of the local area. We had the homemade mulled wine (to die for) and the Kwak beer (also to die for) - we loved this place so much we had to visit it twice in a day!

Hugo is one of the most amazing people we have ever met on our travels. He made such an impact on us, that we had to find him something for his collection on the rest of our trip in Scotland. We found him a small silver plated trumpet. We will 100% be visiting this bar again when we return in November. Could not recommend this bar more.

Extremely rude service , seen two ladies change their mind about sitting in for drinks , fair enough the place was full and if you like you like your personal space this bar isn’t for you , but the bartender literally said what a great deterrent loudly to other customers as they were politely leaving . Won’t be returning .

Came in for a drink , seen it was busy and I’m a bit under the weather didn’t want to be coughing close to people , so left , as we were leaving the bartender explained to the entire bar how it’s a good deterrent as we were walking out . Really unnecessary and rude . Won’t be back and will be letting people i work with in hospitality to avoid .

A very atmospheric cozy pub in Stockbridge area.

Greeted by brusque foreign woman and directed to a cramped table downstairs when there was plenty of room upstairs. Then neighbouring table full of drunk students upset their table, broke glasses and spilt wine over our coats. Bar staff said that it was nothing to do with them and would not consider even the dry cleaning costs. Ended up being a rather expensive place to stop for a drink. Definitely not recommended.

Went there on Xmas day Not same pub as years gone by totally over rated prices in fact day light robbery to be honest. Won't go back plus looks like it needs good clean

Great decor, very stylish unique watering hole. It boasts one incredibly rude barman (possibly the owner) and the cocktails aren’t super amazing. If you can deal with that probably worth dropping in for one.

Such a cute spot! Sat downstairs and it was so cozy, cocktails were great. Highly recommend the mr monks tea party, it was delicious! The upstairs was equally as cute, almost wish we sat up there ❤️

The absolute worst customer experience I have ever experience. The sideburned man who we believe is the owner, was aggressive, condescending, and made our stay extremely unpleasant. On our arrival, he seemed initially kind to us, despite loudly complaining about the poor work of other bar staff. Over the course of our stay, he took offence to the way we used our coasters, ordered our drinks, paid our bill, you name it! Some friends of ours arrived in the bar unexpectedly, and when we rose and greeted them, he loudly displayed his irritation at us talking while standing up. Our friends left immediately afterwards, after them ordering a cocktail was deemed too inconvenient. As we left, we heard him commenting loudly to the bar on how "funny" we were as a group, especially myself "the Asian one". This man's eccentricities has a seriously sour side, and I do not think this belongs in any public facing service, or indeed anywhere. See TripAdvisor for many other reviews that support this theory. The decor is nice, drinks were OK, jazz vinyl was good, but nothing will make me go there again. I suggest you avoid this.

Amazing atmosphere, very nice choice of drinks

This is a truly, wonderfully special place. I spent my first night, my last night, and many nights in between at this eclectic bar, and could have spent my whole Edinburgh trip here. The beer and cocktail selections are wonderful, and Hugo, the owner, is one of the kindest and communicative bar owners I have ever met. Overall, the staff are wonderful (Hello Alise & Rachel!) and I cannot recommend this spot enough. The music is all vinyl records and it is a very difficult place to leave.

A bar with true character that's a delight to drink in. There's a range of well-made cocktail specials, craft beers and wines for everyone. Interior is quirky and adds to the atmosphere with great music being played on vinyl. The staff are great and the owner clearly enjoys hosting people in his bar.
