Ate here about a year ago and loved it so we came back, this time with friends and it was just as good as last time, though the decor was actually better. We had the tasting menu with the wine flight. The food is absolutely fantastic, really can’t praise it enough. The wines paired with each course were perfect. The service was relaxed and friendly though perfectly attentive. I really recommend this restaurant and will definitely be going back again despite living quite a distance away, it’s worth the trip!

Excellent meal. Very well presented. We had the a la carte option rather than the chefs experience.. that was solely because we weren’t aware of the option until we arrived, we would have an earlier booking for a tasting. The room has been improved since our last visit and the overall style and quality has followed suit. We will return soon. New visitors should expect Nouveau style so expect quality nor quantity. House cocktail is a must , but I did struggle for a single glass of wine to match my superbly cooked veal. The music loop was great 80’sand90’s RUlLES !!

Beautifully presented, creative, fabulous food. Now that they have moved away from a “taster only” menu we’re back on a regular basis. The fact that they change their menu on a monthly basis keeps us coming back for more.

This restaurant is simply exceptional. We throughly enjoyed our first visit having tried the smaller of the chef’s menus. What a culinary masterpiece in presentation and flavours, with some delicious wines too. Cannot wait to go back and if you are looking for somewhere special, then this is the place to go! We were a group of 7. Service was warm and friendly and very attentive. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Catered for vegetarians and vegans. I am a coeliac and always worry with contamination of gluten which I can't eat, but they totally understood and served mine separately with no contamination at all. What a lovely evening and love the interior too.

Flavours exceptional, but there’s just not enough food! All my family left feeling hungry. Hardly any veg or potatoes to fill you up. I know these fancy schmancy dishes look fantastic and they certainly tasted amazing, but surely at the end of the day you want your guests to feel satisfied.

Dropped in on the spur of the moment to have lunch before Christmas. A wonderful welcome from the staff which was followed on by a most delicious meal. Each dish celebrated a multitude of different tastes. Delightful young chefs who were proud of their work. Highly recommended

We went for a Christmas night out with friends, this was the first visit here for most of us in the group. Service was good and the flavours were amazing but there was not enough food. 2 inches of potato gratin, 1 carrot and some cabbage leaves was the sum total of the vegetables. There really is no excuse for leaving a restaurant hungry.

Food and service always spot on. I love that there is some cross over with the taster menu and the lunch menu so you can try some of the dishes without signing up to the full shabang as well. Great value for the quality. Also you have to get the wine flight with the taster menu. Makes it.

First time at Sq1 and it won't be our last. First of all the young lady who served us was last night was fantastic explaining everything and making sure nothing was a problem and look after us - a lot of places could learn from this lady when it comes to customer service. The food Dippy duck starter was fantastic and where do you get that sea weed butter and bread from. My wife had the thai style pollock and I settled for the duck both were outstanding. The thing is I am not a dessert person but I tried the Blue cheese mouse which was good but a bit to strong for me - the wife loved it - she had the white chocolate raspberry dessert which i must admit was really good Overall a great evening and many thanks to you all

I think we were first to try Chef Webb's new 5 Course Tasting Menu for lunch yesterday, based on his Masterchef Professional dishes. Quite simply, it was fantastic! One of the best lunches we've had, anywhere and really puts Essex back on the culinary map. The tuna, turbot and the chicken dishes, "as seen on TV", were outstanding.It was a pleasure to talk to him too, as well as the owner, Spencer Hewitt. So interesting to hear about his experiences on TV and Spencer's 17 year history at Square 1. Only a shame we hadn't discovered the restaurant before!Well worth the trip and will certainly be returning. Big thanks to the whole Square 1 team. Made us smile again after the latest Lockdown.

We went to Square 1 for my husbands birthday, mistakenly having been told they were still doing the Eat out to Help out Scheme, (They weren't but we let that go as I wanted to eat there anyway.)The food was beautifully cooked and nicely served, but portions were on the small side - (one chargrilled leak slice?)It was good so see the kitchen & the Chef/s working, from the dining area, everything appeared fresh & perfectly presented although I did have to send a fork back for being still dirty. :(The menu looked like a short version to accommodate Covid, which was fine, but for vegetarians who don't like mushrooms there were no other options (Not all Veggies like mushrooms - a bit of veggie choice would be good!)We were served a complimentary truffle butter on Rye bread which was horrible, but husband liked it so ate both pieces.Mains were £26+, Starters £8-11, desserts £9/10 but husband had steak which he though was wonderful.It cost £130 for two people, (with one drinking only non-alcoholic drinks due to driving.)Definitely a restaurant for people who like food - 'Foodies' not people who like pub food.

Hadn't been here for a while and was just blown away. The whole format has changed to accommodate the current Covid 19 situation, but gone for a smaller, more intimate menu which was incredible. Punching way above it's weight as the food was exquisite, beautifully prepared and presented, with flavours that were amazing. This comes a very close second to the Michelin starred Flitch of Bacon in my opinion, at a much better price.Well done Spencer and great to meet you and hear about your menu choices. Don't forget to order more desert wine, as complimented the excellent cheese board so well?!

I ordered butternut squash spaghetti and it was AMAZING! Chef was happy to tweak the meal for one of my guests too. Best meal I have had out in a very long time. Well done to the chef. Also happy and helpful staff. I will definitely be back!

I ate here with a friend on Monday evening for Monday Madness - 3 courses for £20 plus 10% service charge. So not quite as cheap as it used to be pre-covid but still very good value we thought. With regard to covid, the tables were well spaced and we were very impressed by the new furniture (very comfortable chairs). Not all staff were wearing masks or visors, but the majority were - I think there was perhaps only 1 waiter who was not. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious and a perfect portion size. The pudding was particularly memorable - a chocolate torte with ice cream. I don't think that I have ever tasted a more delicious chocolate torte in my life. We very much enjoyed our evening and look forward to returning.

A very disappointing dinner was partly saved by excellent service. I think that the chef must be lazy to have onion gravy for both the beef and chicken dishes on a very cut back menu isn’t trying very hard. For lovers of bisto gravy the plus is that is what the so called onion gravy tasted like. The steak was cooked well but the sauté potatoes were a disaster. For the price simply not worth it.

We booked Square One as it was my husband's birthday. We love this restaurant and have never been disappointed. Kat greeted us on arrival and was very friendly and welcoming. Covid measures were in place with clear signage and instructions so we weren't at all worried. The food, wine and service were second to none (and the gin of the month!) If you haven't been here please do, it is a gem and we are lucky to have it on our doorstep. Thank you Spencer, Kat and team

Chose Square 1 for a commiseration meal on what was meant to be our wedding day which was cancelled due to Covid. We wanted to stay local and hadn’t been for a few years. Faultless evening. Amazing food, friendly service, couldn’t ask for more. Steak was the best bit of meat we’d had in a long time, and cooked perfectly. Enjoyed every course. Thank you x

From the initial call to book a table to the end of the evening the service we received was excellent. The food was amazing, freshly cooked and perfect portions and plenty of options to choose from on the menu. The restaurant manager was attentive and happy to laugh and chat with us throughout the evening but equally was happy to leave us to enjoy our wine and just sit chatting at the end of the evening. The meal was incredibly priced for the quality and service. Despite being quiet when we visited mid-week the restaurant had a lovely atmosphere and we left feeling glad we'd chosen to celebrate both our Birthdays here.

We visited Dunmow a pleasant Essex Town to meet friends for lunch yesterday and chose Square 1 as the venue. The restaurant sits well in the middle of the High St not far from bus stops and car parks and looks good from the outside. Once inside the ceilings are low but the place has a comfortable feel. It's not until you sit you realise the seating is very worn and needs recovering. The lunch menu on the other hand is well presented, it's a set menu at lunch but the choices are good, we chose the Soup, delicious, a Chicken Waldorf Salad looked scrumptious and a Scotch Egg, seemed a bit meagre, for starters. Then our mains, Cod with Samphire and Spinach very good and Venison a little tough with Cabbage and a Beetroot Jus all accompanied with roast Pots. For dessert we chose Gin & Lemon Tarts and Chocolate Flan with Ice Cream, all well presented and very tasty. The service was friendly, helpful and efficient and the food bill at £17.50 ph for 3 courses (£15 for 2) good value. I'd go again.

Eton mess dessert was good but not in appearance.Friendly service but lack of «privacy» by the table since there are many and very close to each other.We were sitting by the window, hasn’t been dusted there for a while... not too appetizing to look at.

As much as anything about this place I like the ambience. It feels like a proper restaurant - not a caff, not a chain, not a pub but a proper, good old fashioned rastaurant. The menus in my experience have been varied and fairly interesting, the portions are of the right size and the quality of the cooking is very good indeed. However, dishes coming out of the kitchen should be hotter and the plates should be warmer and these are a pretty basic points that can and should be addressed by the chef at no cost. The wine list struck me as expensive and our bill reflected the generally high cost of drinks, as the menu itself, for the overall quality of the food, is uber-reasonable even without the 'Mad Monday' embelishment.

First time visit and decided to book the Monday Madness as in the area, on arrival our first impressions were really good, the set menu had nice choices, the wine we ordered was also very good and so far quite good service, also liked the atmosphere and ambience.It kind of went downhill food wise when the duck starter arrived it was tough and chewy, both of our mains arrived barely warm, I sent mine back however by the time it was heated my partner had finished his meal which isn’t very nice to then eat on your own it defeats the point in dining out together, really when this happens they should know to take both meals back. My partner was too polite to send the risotto back. The special pie was nice but it came with mashed potato which was like a runny liquid nothing like mash. The Monday menu is a very good price so didn’t go expecting it to be amazing just perhaps good pub food so quite disappointed overall we wouldn’t go back.

The best surprises are on your own door step right?! We came here a year ago and the food then was great then. So for my birthday I decided we’d go back and was again impressed with the place. The steaks are cooked to perfection and are a real top quality cut for a fillet. A little expensive perhaps but the food was good. The only criticism really would be the with the sides, very small and just an accompaniment rather part of the actual meal. Vegetables are cheap and should really be piled high. For dessert I had a warm waffle with ice cream which again was nice but the portion size wasn’t great. Guys, up your portion sizes but other than that, lovely! Great service, clean restaurant and excellent chefs.

Our family party of eight had lunch here on the Saturday between Christmas and New Year. The restaurant was warm, as was the welcome we received. The menu was good and the price reasonable. I’ve never had anyone be as rude as this guy though and I don’t care if he is the owner. He should never have any contact with the public in my opinion. Luckily, there are plenty of other good eateries who know how customers should be treated, as they pay their wages!

Let’s face it, above all else when you go out for a meal what you are looking for is some delicious food. We ordered some scallops to start and these were amazing! In fact all three courses were amazing. The staff were well informed about the menu and very helpful without being overly attentive. I cannot stand being asked every five minutes if my meal is okay!! So if you are thinking of giving Square 1 a try, stop thinking and start booking!

Don’t hesitate to book. This is the 2nd time we’ve met friends there and had the set evening meal. I was the only carnivore amongst us and the pork belly was out of this world. Similarly, the Eaton mess I had afterwards for desert. My starter of calamari in batter was okay but I wouldn’t choose that again when I saw my friends alternative choices which all looked delicious. Tuesday evening was quite quiet so the service was brilliant. The Pinot Grigio at £20 was extremely quaffable. Overall a great experience and Including coffee and mint teas came to under £30 per head. Looking forward to next time!

Our business HQ is in Great Dunmow - I live 180 miles away but have to travel to the office from time to time for 20+ years. Decided that we would not have an Indian but have a change and eat at Square1 - our second time - our first experience probably over a year ago was very good. Restaurant was busy again - and as usual - we (Myself and a colleague) had not booked but were told to come back in half an hour. It was well worth the wait - good surroundings, great food, good friendly service - and becuase it was so busy the serving staff must have walked the equivalent of half a marathon keeping all the customers happy. We sat with a great view of the serving hatch. Could not help noticing what was going on in the kitchen. A special mention to Rachel (We asked who she was) - yes we were so impressed with the way Rachel worked in the kitchen and her abilities to get the food out communicating with the staff - which so often goes un-noticed. She apparently is in charge of the kitchen had 2 new starters and still managed to work miracles serving a busy restaurant. You see all the awful things that go on in Ramseys Kitchen Nightmares and the problems that happen when someone does not take control - NONE of that in Square1 - Well done Rachel - You deserve a special mention - and here it is - your boss is so lucky to have you working for him/her - we hope he/she appreciates you!! BTW - really enjoyed our food - Great night - Excellent!!

Visited with my neighbour for lunch. Found it to be very welcoming. The waitress was very nice and helpful. We had the 3 course lunch. Both had halumi to start which was lovely, followed by roast chicken breast and grilled vegetables which again was very tasty and deserts were naughty but nice! Will definitely return. Very good value at £17.50. Good choice of wine too!

Just enjoyed a wonderful birthday lunch for my partner in this fab restaurant, Square 1. Fantastic service from three girls who were watching, unobtrusively, all around the restaurant to make sure nothing was amiss for the diners. Nicely laid tables, albeit minimalistic, but it worked against the dark wood background.

We ate here for mothers day and were really surprised at how nice it was. I didn't realise that Dunmow had such a little gem in plain view on the high street.

Booked a table for 2pm. When we hadn’t ordered by 2.10pm we were told that the kitchen closed at 2.30pm. Basically we needed to get a move on! From that point on we felt rushed and an inconvenience to staff. It was awkward to say the least. If we’d been told when we booked we would have gone elsewhere. Shame because we’ve had better experiences at this restaurant. Probably won’t go at lunchtime again.

Four of us went for dinner and we all had a very enjoyable evening. Fabulous food in a lovely atmosphere with great service.

We have been to Square One on several occasions when visiting family in the area and have always received good food and service, i would recommend booking early.

What a wonderful day to enjoy the new recipes on Monday evening. The food was delicious and beautifully cooked and presented, matched by the excellent service and pleasant staff.

I’ve visited Square One several times and have not once been disappointed. I like how you can see the kitchen staff as they create your scrumptious meal. Enjoy

A friend and I met here on Wednesday this week. Neither of us knew Great Dunmow and I had chosen the restaurant using Trip Advisor. We were both very pleased with the choice. The set menu offered a good selection and was very reasonably priced. The food was of a high standard, freshly cooked, nicely presented and a sensible quantity. The service was attentive and friendly. Excellent coffee at only £2.50 per cup. The building is timber framed and the interior decor is simple, relying on the exposed beams to provide plenty of charm.
