The food was freshly prepared with care and skill. Crispy spring rolls, interesting freshly cooked vegetables and funghi in the noodle soup. Attentive efficient service.

We visited here after my usual takeaway spot was closed. We ordered a variety of dishes, including beef curries, beef noodles, spring rolls, prawn toast, crispy seaweed rice, noodles, and sweet and sour chicken, all amounting to about £100. Given the price, I anticipated exceptional takeaway food. But, much to our chagrin, each dish underwhelmed. The Ho fun beef noodles were notably lacking in beef, and the plain noodles were so oily that there was a significant pool of oil at the base of the container. Both the prawn toast and spring rolls tasted overcooked and dry. Though the egg fried rice had a distinct orange hue, it was surprisingly devoid of any egg flavor. The half duck, priced at £20, seemed more akin to a quarter duck from other establishments. When we inquired about this, we were told it's because they debone and trim the duck. If that's accurate, I shudder to think of their food wastage! Overall, the experience was a costly disappointment. I won't be returning.

I have been going to this restaurant for a long time, and though it has changed hands during that time, the quality of food has not changed. They serve high-quality, authentic Chinese dishes. If you are looking for 'Chinese takeaway'-style food then this might not be for you. If, like me, you have lived in mainland China for any period of time and miss the real Chinese food, then Spring will not disappoint. I recommend the 红烧肉/braised pork or the 水煮肉片. The prices here are also very reasonable, and my wife and I have always found the service to be friendly. You can even pay by WeChat!

After eating in this restaurant for several years every now and then and actually really liking it this evening I was presented with a bill for a meal I hadn’t had. This was along side the bill for the meal I had ordered. They said I needed to pay for a meal that I hadn’t paid for but eaten ‘some time ago’. Someone had ordered two lunch specials and not paid for them. I said that wasn’t me and they said it definitely was. Well, it wasn’t and I’m pretty offended by this accusation. I told them it simply wasn’t me and this is ridiculous. I won’t be going back.

Same price if you collect your takeaway or eat inside! None of our dishes had vegetabls in, one dish was just tiny pieces of fried chicken with sliced fried chillies, nothing else! Very unfriendly service. Where we come from if you spend over £70 on a family chinese take-away on a Tuesday evening they would compliment you with some free prawn crackers!

My self and my partner went here for diner and I can’t say it was the best noodles we have had. We had a wait of 20/25 minutes before our order was taken and when we had ordered our dishes did not have very much flavour we had a beef noodle dish and some pan fried dumplings and everything was dripping with oil. I get that with the dumplings being an fried they may come with a little oil but as soon as it was bitten into it just gushed out. I wouldn’t recommend!

Delicious food, good service, great portions & good value. Not much in the way of bells n whistles - like canteen food but a great range from very simple to full on Szechuan spice. It was a relief to find proper spicy food in Cambridge which can tend towards the bland. I'm sure they serve something for every taste - I've took people in there who prefer their food a little more... simple. The lunch menu is pretty handy & quite cheap. The people are lovely too.

He visitado Spring Restaurant varias veces. I don't know what it is but I'd say that: food is positively different from your normal Chinese takeaway or chain, as far as I could see there's only one chef and he stirs and cooks while wearing smart trousers and white shirt (what a class!!), prices are very affordable, quality is great. Now we've been twice and both times all dishes have been cooked to perfection. And to conclude, after eating Chinese I usually feel bloated and a bit nauseous but not after eating at Spring. Superb! I can't begin to imagine how it manages to achieve so many bad reviews as well as the many more ecstatic ones. I'm writing this review with mixed feelings. The thing is that the food at this place was excellent, the price was very reasonable and the service was friendly. The menu offers plenty of choice to regular take-awayers, fans of classic Chinese cuisine and to the more adventurous alike. We couldn't fault the food - it was well served, the portions were generous and there was a choice of condiments that was well beyond what anyone would normally demand. But the establishment itself was rather tatty and neglected. The hob/table combo was only wiped (partially) after we sat down, with a cloth that I'm not sure actually made it much cleaner. The outside door wouldn't close properly so every time someone left, the room chilled down. When the couple sitting at the other table left, their table was cleared but not wiped instantly so a few bits of rice remained on their table, and it eludes me why the tidy-up wasn't done immediately. Some of the floor panels came slightly up. The walls mustn't have been painted in years. The food itself was of a very high standard. But in terms of visuals and maintenance, the front of house deserves more attention. This place currently has a 3.5 rating (between "average" and "very good" - I guess that means "good"). Looks shouldn't matter, but in this case I'm sure that just a little bit more attention to detail could make the difference between a "good" rating vs. a "very good" to "excellent" one. Here's hoping this will be read by the management.

We decided on a Chinese take away and as most of the "traditional" Chinese restaurants are now closed we thought we would try The Spring. It is not cheap but you don't mind if its good. The food was basically awful. We ended up throwing most of it away. We had a chicken dish which had weird gooey globules in it which we think was supposed to be the chicken. We ate a few bits and cut some up but we are still uncertain what it was made of. A seafood dish had two prawns in it and some weird bits of crab stick. We threw most of it away. The stir fry vegetables were the only thing we were able to eat. Never again.

This place deserves to be WAY higher up in the ratings! (Totally confused by the handful of negative reviews -- have eaten there twice and always had a good experience! It's not at all fancy -- very basic almost canteen feeling, so maybe if you're looking for something else...??) I've had dumplings and a tofu dish off the a la carte menu, both of which were delicious (especially the tofu), and then the hotpot/bbq menu with a group of friends. Beware the hotpot broth is very very spicey (in a tingly/mouth numbing peppercorn rather than chilli way) I had medium but even my friends who had mild said the same! Huge range of stuff to choose from (yes it's true the tongs are the same for veg/fish/meat etc but personally I don't care you're cooking everything anyway can't be doing with all this prissy cross contamination crap, except for allergies of course) and it's limitless. So much fun with a group as you experiment with all the different combos. Great night out!!

We had a great meal, some dishes were loved by all , some loved by half,. The portion sizes I find very large, so 3 adults and 1 child were overwhelmed by food, but at a great price and they will pack it to go. The food was fresh ( you could hear it being cooked ) and the hotpot was fantastic, where while it looks a bit shabby , you could go and pick what you want to cook in your hotpot from a fridge over and over, the fact that the Asian community eat here constantly is a great sign and while a few dishes may not be to the western liking it is a gem of a restaurant. I will take people here time and time again. We've been there once and it was enough to hate the place. I asked the waitress if I can have any of the soups with chicken instead of pork or beef and she was happy with that. Minutes later she brought me a soup with beef but I decided not to send it back. The quality of the meat was very poor as I wasn't sure which parts of the beef I was eating…I couldn't finish my tasteless and dodgy meal. We had also ordered some chicken wings which were cut in very small pieces (one wing cut in three small pieces) .We could only taste raw chicken and bones. In the meantime one member of the staff (probably the chef) sat next to us in the middle of the restaurant and started eating like a horse, loudly and rudely. We couldn't stand him so we asked for the bill which was a handwritten piece of paper in Chinese. We asked for a proper receipt and we were given another handwritten piece of paper but in English this time. We were also charged an extra pound for the chicken wings as the price on the menu was different. They claimed they didn't have a receipt machine. They don’t accept card payments. Avoid this place.

I'm a fan of all you can eat but am quite particular and would never have expected all you can eat to be good in Cambridge. We dropped by here having walked past it and heard good things from friends. The hot pot is somewhat expensive but it is all you can eat with a wide range of fresh seafood, meat and vegetables. We ordered both the spicy and non-spicy foods. The service is ok but mostly self-service (for the hotpot) since you get the raw ingredients yourself to cook in the hot pot at the table. If you've never tried it, its a wonderful way to bond over a communal cooking and eating experience. From the outside it seems a bit dingy but is perfectly clean inside. Basic seating but then we are only there for the food. Surrounded by other east asians eating their hearts out. what better way to go! Feels like home. You must be ok with picking up your own raw food and cooking it. I've heard their other dishes are also good but have not yet tried them.

Tucked away in Mill Road this is one to stumble across. We have walked past The Spring so many times but never at lunch time when its been open. So it was a nice surprise to try it recently when we happened to be in Mill Road at lunch time.It looks like (and is) a simple basic Chinese Cafe but there are more tables down the side and the back. There is an excellent choice (£5) lunch menu which has something for everyone and is extremely tasty. In fact you would pay twice as much for the same food and portion size in Cambridge City Centre. The beef Ho Fun was very, very authentic and the dishes were prepared and came quickly. We also saw them making their own noodles from dough to thru to the table ...... none of the bought dried stuff here ..... very, very authentic.Highly Recommended if you are passing but remember its no frills.

Continuing along Mill Road we dropped into the Spring on Sunday evening. The waitress was efficient and the drinks and the food were delivered in reasonable time. I last ate here two years ago, and remember that time the food was equally well prepared. The place is basic, this isn't high end dining, it is basic well prepared and served chinese food. Another cash only joint as well.

I had the misfortune of ordering a take away this evening. I had ordered egg fried rice and stir fry pork. The rice was old and the pork was tasteless and the service was pathetic. I had a friend coming over, and my meal was a disaster. A waste of 12 pounds. Never will I go to this restaurant again.

Lovely meal, good price for the amount you get. Service was terrible, waiter rude and when we asked for our bill they looked a bit put out. .... If you are happy for poor service you won't be diss appointed about the food, if was full of flavor and there was a lot.

It was my third or forth visit to this restaurant over the last 3 years and each time I have had a good meal for a good price. Surroundings are pretty basic but in keeping with the Bohemian nature of this part of Cambridge.

Authentic food, reasonable price. Service always friendly and polite. I would definatley recommend. The place doesn't look special, lots of chinese and cantonese customers say no more.

Purchased a takeaway for three. Waitress told us we needed to order more food. In the end we could not finish it all. The food lacked seasoning and was the worst Chinese we have ever eaten. Soups were band. The chicken with ginger and also the mixed veg dish similarly tasteless. Interestingly the waitress told us they didi not have any Pak Choi, but when we opened the mixed veg, there they were amidst other vegetables. Hardly any sauce provided with the Peking Duck. The pepper squid was soggy and unpleasant. Even more annoying it all cost £59. AVOID

We were in Cambridge to visit a sick elderly relative for Xmas and our hotel (The Gonville) was fully booked for dinner. Just round the corner we found this Chinese restaurant open and thinking ourselves lucky decided to give it a try. The menu looked "authentic", it was obviously a student hang out, and the prices were reasonable; however, that is all I can say in favour of this place. The food was appalling; the worst Chinese food I've had in many years! The squid in ginger and spring onion didn't taste of ginger or spring onion. It had a few measly strands of what I suspect was "Lazy Ginger" in it and about half a spring onion; the main bulk of the dish was plain chopped onion topped with a few morsels of squid. The chicken with cashew nuts was tasteless chicken "pellets" completely lacking in flavour of any kind. The aubergine had so much sugar in it was "caramelised" and too sickly sweet to eat; and they even managed to serve badly cooked pak choi with garlic, which we sampled but left mostly uneaten.Oh, and one more thing ... we were placed on a table near the back near the doorway to the residence, and throughout our entire meal we were constantly subjected to cigarette smoke, which at times was overwhelming - yuck! All in all a thoroughly unpleasant experience, and we shan't be going again!

Here you will find food of an exotic variety - mainstream chinese food plus traditional Szechuan food which is very spicy. Try it, you will be hooked!

This is a great little restaurant serving authentic and incredibly tasty food. It's not particularly glamorous, but the food is absolutely excellent. A little Cambridge gem.

We popped in for lunch as a family last Sunday and had the set menu B, swapping one of the spicy dishes for something milder to please the children. Simply wonderful food. Excellent Dim-sum, super-fresh & fragrant dishes. Huge portions. We were all very happy with the food, the location and the charming staff.

this place we came across by accident, we like to eat "where the locals eat" if it's good enough for them then it must be worth trying! we have been here so many times now. It lacks decor and style but it's the food that is worth going for. The plates are plentiful, the squid is so tender with a light crispy coating. i've not had the hotpot there - which is now £15 but it's interesting seeing others having it. one day we shall try. I love everything I have tried there from dumplings, noodles, rice to soup. It's definitely a place to try and visit. They are very welcoming, polite and will try and cater for your needs. we can't stop going back!

It is difficult to believe that I ate in the same place as most of the other reviewers on here.. I popped in here one Sunday on my way somewhere for a very quick lunch. I had a chicken spring onion rice dish, which was a very reasonable price. However it was absolutely vile. The chicken was sort of slimy and gave me the impression that it was very cheap chicken - if it was chicken at all and I was not convinced of this. The whole dish was very odd and I felt quite ill eating it, so I left most of it. The place is obviously not an up market eatery so I was not expecting anything fantastic, but this was beyond awful! The other strange thing is that they gave me only a spoon to eat it with, and a very mangy looking spoon at that. I have decided that I shall not just pop in somewhere in a hurry again! The service was okay though rather absent.

Don't do go here if you yearn for spacious and swish surroundings. DO eat here if want to experience real Chinese food, not the insipid interpretation many Chinese restaurants serve up. First rate fresh tasty food and excellent service. Have a try of the Chinese Hotpot.

The clientele here is predominantly oriental which has to be a good sign. The food is superb and the service friendly. I would like to point out an outstanding dish... but they are all good. As a rule one has to be reasonably chilli tolerant, but this is not essential. The kidneys are well cooked. The lamb with cumin seed is fragrant, the poached fish in chilli oil worth traveling for,, the squid is almost perfect, the pig's ears are........ I am currently trying to eat my way through the entire menu and have barely finished the lunchtime specials which are astoundingly good value. We have been pretty much going there once a week since finding the place. Can't recommend it highly enough. Very much my syte of food.

I have been to this restaurant several times, and have been consistently impressed by the quality of the food and the fact that it is definitely not standard Chinese restaurant fare. There is a good range of starters which are beautifully cooked and well-presented - the chilli squid is a stand-out which is absolutely fantastic (I've had it several times)...light batter, tender squid and a good amount of chilli to add spice. SImilarly, prawn toasts are nothing like the usual Chinese restaurant offer - they really look like they are home made, and taste very different to the usual.Again, there is a good range of main courses, with some quite exotic offerings (pigs' ears, etc), and also the "hotpot" option of cooking your own meal at the table using various ingredients (I haven't tried this option, but it certainly seems to be popular). The setting is basic - don't expect fancy decor or a particularly comfortable environment - but the food more than makes up for this. Also, the service is very good - welcoming, friendly and efficient. And finally, prices are really competitive, considering the quality of the food offering, and also the portion sizes, which are very generous. At our most recent visit, we paid £40 total for a two course meal for two, including a bottle of wine!Overall, this is a great little restaurant - a gem worth treasuring and definitely worth a special visit for the outstanding food.

definitely Chinatown in Cambridge! excellent value. Quirky - don't be surprised if you get your main course before your soup - and then what do you do when the soup is too hot to eat and your main course is going cold? But the food is good and the people friendly. The predominately Chinese clientèle mostly seem to be cooking their own meals at their table! I always thought the point of a restaurant was not having to do that.

I have been here in my quest for real hot pot in Cambridge and it's the best I've found. 13 pounds all you can eat good quality meat, fish, tofu and vegetables - and you get an incredible amount! Hot pot is a real treat for anyone who hasn't tried it - a pot of delicious broth/soup brought to your table in which you cook yourself the raw ingredients. Sociable and delicious, makes dining into a real shared experience. The staff in Spring are very friendly and it's simple but real.

I wanted Chinese takeaway, and I was willing to go wherever was nearby, which happened to be anything on Mill Road. Mistake.I order a vegetarian version of their Singapore noodles dish, without egg, which they delivered (minus the tofu I had asked for, so we had to walk back to the restaurant to get them to implant some). They were very kind about the mistake, and the employees were always very nice but seemed extremely overworked and flustered, from beginning to end of my friend and I being there. When we finally got back to eat our food...oh my god, it was revolting. I have never had 'Chinese' food this bad before. The noodles were so overcooked that you could smell the burnt something all over the house. (My friend got the normal vegetarian Singapore noodles dish, so we couldn't blame this on them making a 'special dish' or something like that). The natural juiciness that makes it worthwhile to eat a noodle had been completely cooked out, and the result was noodles that both clumped together and had become coated in burnt oil to the point that they had a sort of thick fuzzy texture on them. It was completely gross, and cost £5.50.After the meal, some friends found out what we'd done and groaned with us in pain. Apparently, Spring is known as being a 'Chinese' restaurant--that is, not really making true Chinese food--and for having disgusting food at that. They'd all been there, and they all had learned the first time around never to go back. Some places in Cambridge they did recommend are: Seven Days, and Lan Hong House. Also, they struggled with remembering the ocean-themed name of another good one (I imagine it's Ocean Dragon). So, now you know! Stay away!

Have only been there the once but can't wait to go again and start sampling the rest of the menu. We went for the hotpot this time and it was just like being back in China. All you can eat meat, shellfish and veg, noodles and tofu for £11!! The waitress was friendly and the food came out quickly. An absolute gem :) Only downside is that it's cash only but with a cash point round the corner that's not a huge problem.

I popped into Spring for a quick Sunday lunch last weekend, after having read good things about it on other review sites.First things first, don't be put off by the shabby exterior (indeed, the interior isn't especially good either). From what I understand, the current owners have just bought the place and have invested heavily in the kitchen rather than the front of house. Nonetheless, the restaurant felt perfectly clean, just rather worn and dated. It was pretty empty, but then I suppose you'd expect that in a Chinese restaurant at Sunday lunchtime; there were only two other occupied tables and all the other diners were Chinese, which I suppose is a good sign.I ordered Ma Po Tofu from the £5 lunch menu (which had about 10 listings in total). There is also an extensive a la carte menu, which is even bigger if you can read Mandarin - although another reviewer said that the staff will be happy to recommend things from this menu if you can't. My dish arrived within about 8 minutes, and I was immediately struck by the size of it. Not exactly huge, but a lot more than I was expecting for £5, and plenty of Ma Po Tofu as well, not just lots of rice!! The food was very good, although the MPT wasn't quite hot enough for my taste and the rice was a little burnt in places (but I know some people love that, so I won't really hold it against them). The service was reasonably friendly and efficient throughout, although perhaps a little terse for some people. One thing I would like to comment on is that I think the tea is overpriced (£2.50). I often like to drink tea at Chinese restaurants and it's normally quite reasonable (~£0.80) but on this occasion I just had water. All in all, probably not the highest quality Chinese food in Cambridge (although certainly not to be sniffed at), but, as far as I'm aware, the best value!!Suggestions to the owner: Print the Mandarin part of your menu in English as well so that English speaker's have a wider choice.Reduce the price of the tea!PS: I think there's something like a 20% or 30% discount on take away orders, which makes it insanely cheap!

This place should be shutdown, the food tasted awful. No plates given to eat food off. I had to eat my food off the hot-plate. I would rather stick pins in my eye than eat here again. It’s also very expensive. Check food hygiene rating. We have been to many Chinese restaurants whilst working away and I’m sorry to say this is the worst.

Tiny takeaway / delivery café that does NOT cater for dining in very well. None of the usual heated food trays on the table to keep the food warm, food was served on freezing cold plates and starters and main courses served together.. (the duck starter came out with the rice and the four main dishes) we then had to ask her to reheat them as they’d gone cold! she said this was our fault for not telling her to bring the duck out separately!! When we complained she reluctantly removed the 10% service charge. Extremely disappointed ☹️
