Best Indian in Plymouth, by a long way!

This has been our local Indian for the last ten years. We must have had literally over a hundred orders. For the first time in ten years there was an issue with our order, our onion bhajis were missing. I called and they were amazing, very apologetic and offered to sort it immediately. Everyone is human and sometimes things aren’t right, but the way they handled it was superb. Thats why I’m giving them five stars. Most importantly the food is absolutely incredible, and for the last ten years has been absolutely amazing. I’d highly recommend, it genuinely is restaurant quality food.

called up for delivery and the man on the phone was very rude, shouting at me when i said my address rather than my postcode. He did not sound happy being there they definitely need better customer service.

Vegetable dishes were nice but chicken dish had a bad, rubbery texture - ended up binning half of it. Meat definitely not fresh and poor quality. Don't like leaving a bad review, however if you are paying a good amount of money you expect a certain quality. Very disappointing. On the plus side, spices were nice and it arrived earlier than expected.

Food delivered quickly. However, was poor all round. Horribly oily bharjees and samosas, and bland, tasteless curry. The whole meal was greasy and almost inedible

First & last time I order from here, came quickly & was hot but it was tasteless & very greasy the chips were dripping with fat, almost soggy, the chicken was very rubbery & bland, chicken do piazza more like a river of grease, never again

Fantastic Currys 🍛 always probably my favourite in Plymouth, shame they dont have sit down restaurant as they should, curry always hot tasty and a great eat. 100% from me 👌👌

Ordered a garlic curry, rice Naan and poppadoms, the rice was bone dry and old, had no taste, the curry was completely bland, I’ve never had a garlic curry not even taste like garlic, was full of oil and dry chicken, food came luke warm at best, will not be ordering again

Service, fine, nice people. Atmosphere, it's a take away? But again all fine Food, well sadly disappointing. I must point out I'm no Indian food specialist, however our 3 meals tasted 99% the same. Chicken Korma, Chicken Mougol and Chicken Tikka Masala (different colour) They all tasted like a very sweet, coconutty Korma. Disappointed. Maybe someone could tell me what different ingredient are used in these 3 meals?

Prawn curry was bland no spice, and prawns were like rubber!! Pilau rice and saag aloo cold. Poppadoms were lovely.

Tandoori mixed grill. Really tasty hot and freshly made. Thank you.

I think it depends on what chef is cooking, sometimes great other times sheer crap no longer eat hear because at the price of food today you don't want to be disappointed. Was loyal for a long time but do not like inconsistent taste, one dish I love is patia, should be spicy and sweat and sour, to taste all the flavours. But on more occasions lately its either bland, or just hot, and not tastey.

Home delivery the chicken was dry and tough only fit for the bin the butter chicken looked like it was floating in vomit we will never get caught by the restaurant again very poor standard of food at great cost thanks but no thanks .

Collection of several meals for family supper yesterday. But amongst it was one serving of pathia. It was spectacularly good. Possibly the best tasting curry we’d ever had.

*BONELESS* Tandoori chicken had more bones than meat! Not just splinters, entire leg bones. A shame, because the rest tastes great - but cannot justify more than a 1 star for a dangerous and careless oversight in food preparation.

Food arrived Luke warm, maybe room temperature. Called restaurant to be met with a woman with an attitude saying it is not their problem and contact just eat. Just eat didn’t cook my food!!!

Not sure what’s happened to spice merchant but have been ordering from these a long time unfortunately this time the food was barely Luke warm and missing items ie pilau rice to go with the curry and side dishes very disappointing considering what you pay these days so won’t be ordering from these guys again so much for loyal customers

My meal arrived without the curry to go on the biryani the pappadoms rubbery this is the second time the have messed up won’t be using them again

My main reasons for ordering Indian are Peshwari Naan, Poppadoms, and Mint Sauce….unfortunately the mint sauce was orange (as opposed to the usual yellow), was thick like yoghurt (it’s normally nice and runny to dunk the poppadoms but any thicker and we would’ve needed to chew this one) , and was hot enough to rival a vindaloo (not exactly refreshing). Then was the naan “bread” they perhaps should have specified I’d be getting the “whole loaf” with a sprinkle of coconut thrown at it…..not a thin

In my experience, over a number of years, this place is always good. Decent food, decent prices and consistent. I always telephone in advance and collect myself. Average wait about 20 minutes.

Best Indian Takeaway in Plymouth by far, love the Chicken Pakora and it would be nice to have vegetable Pakora on the menu too. Their Paratha are wonderful. Cant wait until I'll visit again.

Always loved Spice Merchant and have been a regular customer for 15-20 years. Tonight I phoned for a delivery, my usual order to be told they no longer accept card by order of the management, due to bank charges and cost of living. I am totally speechless, factor the cost into your charges fgs! I have just ordered my takeaway from another Indian takeaway that does accept card. I don’t have cash ever which I suspect the vast majority of customers don’t. Such a shame.

I found the food ok but a little lacking in taste. The Bhuna was a bit bland. I'm also surprised at the prices. They've jumped up quite a bit but I guess that's inflation for you.

As always good selection of food and yet again not disappointed with our selections. Good service as usual 👍 keep it up.

Great food as always, garlic Nam best in Plymouth; could be a little more spicy on some of the Dishes but personal preference.

Food was really tasty although it could have been hotter (as in temperature not spice heat). Arrived much quicker than expected which was great! Haven't ordered from this takeaway for a long time but will definitely be using them again soon.

anyone who dares to say this fine establishement is bad deserves the death penalty. i have never tasted such fine foods, akin the nectar of the greek gods. i ordered chicken tikka with some chips and my mouth was bursting with flavour, it felt like a million orgasms at once. i highly reccomend this indian. much love to the head chef

This is quite literally the best food I have ever had. A tropical sensation much akin to a party happened in my mouth. Ever since I had some of this delicious ambrosia from the Gods, my life has been on the up: I've been promoted, I've got married, I've achieved total financial freedom. All this success originated from one thing - Spice Merchant. Would recommend to anyone.

Parked right outside , friendly greeting . Freshly cooked , not too long await fabulous food 😃. Nice to be able to pay by card too . Taken menu will be back for sure in the future when in area again

Order mixed starter and no salad or mint sauce with it, after calling them told he couldn't get any iceberg lettuce.... surely he should of mentioned this on ordering and Where's my mint sauce... Now looking for another Indian unacceptable tbh and was a regular customer

Very nice dishes, good quality ingredients, decent size servings, priced very averagly for plymouth, nothing special but also nothing to complain about, free popadoms were nice, no dip was disappointing.

Not cheap and the bindi bhaji wasn't cooked properly

Looked to ordering our usual tonight from here but once I got to the checkout and saw the price I cancelled the order. So far in less than a year, the price has gone from £24 to £28 to now £31.70. I know prices have gone up, so has the cost of living too but seriously that's a ridiculous price for a meal for two people now more so for a takeaway. £7.45 to now £8.55 for a Kurma and £7.95 to now £9.15 for Tikka Massala and £2.95 to now £3.35 for Pilau Rice...plus not only has the prices gone up, the dishes they came in are HALF the size now, so your getting LESS for your money and it's MORE expensive...absolutely shocking. Shame, as we loved the food from there but WON'T be ordering again, ever...not at those prices.

Very good. Shame it was luke warm temperature but the overall quality made up for it. Lamb meat was 50/50. Some pieces tender, some very fatty.

Chicken was a little chewy but rest was fine

Food was really good as normal, shame it was late by 30 mins. Had to heat the whole lot up as it was cold when it arrived. I will still use them though as the food is really good tasty.
