Spice Lounge in County Durham

A bit compact, but cozy. Felt like you could be eating on another party's table. Very reasonably priced and very tasty food. Only slight complaint was the lack of lamb in the Staff Lamb Curry. Gorgeous, but not enough meat. Overall though, really good and well worth a visit.

Solo dining on a Saturday evening booked a table in advance which is advisable as this restaurant in very popular indeed. I was shown to a table immediately and given menus, the restaurant is very nice inside and the staff are very helpful. I ordered chicken tikka jalfrezi, mushroom rice and keema nan bread. The food was amazing. The best I've had in durham so far.

We were a large group of around 30 (a choir singing at the Cathedral for the weekend) and we had a wonderful evening at The Spice lounge. We provided a pre-order in advance and they were amazing at getting our food out to us swiftly and accurately with no hold ups or hiccups whatsoever. We had the whole area on one side to ourselves and it was a fabulous atmosphere. Akki and his staff were fantastic - so friendly and helpful, and on top of everything else the food was delicious! I would highly recommend The Spice Lounge to any groups looking for somewhere to enjoy a relaxing curry together!

We enjoyed a great meal during our weekend stay in Durham. Staff were lovely and attentive to our needs for food and drinks. Make sure you book a table via the website, as it’s very popular!!

Fantastic service and food. I have a tomato allergy and the staff went out of their way to make sure I had something I could eat and also checked a couple of times that I was happy with the dish they prepared. The staff were really friendly and so efficient. Couldn’t have found a fault if I was looking for one. Although it’s not in the main Market Square, it was completely full all the time we were there with tables being occupied as soon as the last guests left. Definitely recommend wearing here if you like good quality food and service.

Best quality meal and service in the region by far and all at a good price. Return visitors for over 14 years. Can’t fault the place or the staff, 10 out of 10 and highly recommended.

Lovely small restaurant very popular. Staff wonderful would recommend highly. Food was lovely I had tandoori thali husband had lamb shank. Would go again if in Durham but would recommend people book in advance as it's busy.

After a great meal here in February for my Birthday, I took my family for a Friday evening meal and as previously the food was very good. Saffron King Prawns and the Exclusive Lamb dishes are well worth trying. The atmosphere was a little strange when we arrived (police were just leaving so that might have been linked). The waiters in themselves were friendly enough but service was disappointing. Poppadoms and dips were spot on, then when the main course was served the waiter was asking my wife to make some space for the food, which I found a bit odd, surely you would clear away before serving mains? Two dishes were served initially and looked stunning. My dish was a disappointment (Sri Lankan Lamb If I recall) The dish was served in a dessert type bowl topped to the brim and my main issue was the lack of meat in the dish compared to the volume of sauce.It was evidently a quiet evening and the staff were busy resetting tables as we were finishing. Overall Food great but service and ambience average.

This restaurant took a bit of finding as it is off a corner in the Market Square. The food was very tasty although more spicy than the chilli guide on the menu indicated. The service was good and the portions large and enjoyable experience.

We were visiting Durham for a few days for our anniversary and decided tonite we'd have a Indian meal.

We had seen some mixed reviews on this restaurant but decided to risk it anyway and we were very pleased that we did. The restaurant is small, but not cramped, situated just off the main square.

Eventhough I came in less than 30 mins before closing, the waiter kindly offered me a table. Ordered onion bhaji and lamb tikka, both were delicious. The waiters asked several times if everything's fine, it's a nice place, I'd recommend.

We visited the Souce Longe in Durham for our third visit over the years, as usual it was spot on and one of the tastiest curry’s We have had. The depth of flavours excellent as was all the food. Service was attentive the surroundings good and reasonably priced- we must visit Durham more!

Friendly service, great atmosphere, bustling and popular. The food was gorgeous! The restaurant is not immediately obvious in the market square, it’s tucked in the alley down the side of the church. Highly recommend this little place.

We had a table booked for 8pm but had to wait for a table to become vacant and it was 8:30 pm by the time we sat down. This was not as bad as it seems as we were seated at a table near the bar and had a drink. We ordered poppadoms, starter and a main. Whilst only half way through the poppadoms our starter was put in front of us! We would have preferred to finish the poppadoms first and then have our starter. The 2 dishes we had looked slightly different but tasted the same with zero heat. However they were low on oil. There was a large booking which was not thought out prior to arrival and the large table was set up virtually blocking the access.

Was not bowled over and would not return again. Nothing wrong, service not exceptional and food simply ok.

We were staying in Durham for couple of days so decided to go out for a meal. I enjoy spicy food so looked for Asian restaurants. We picked this based on previous reviews and were glad we did. It’s only a small place but we managed to get a table for two. There was a fantastic choice on the menu, in fact too much so it was hard to choose. We both had speciality dishes, my husband had lamb and I had king prawns which were large ones. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. It was great value for money and the staff were friendly and polite. If I’m ever in the area again I would definitely revisit.

We had a business meeting in Spruce lounge with dinner. Ambience is same as it was 8 years back, even the persons working there are same. Not too much seating area. Food was good, fresh and tasty. Good variety. Nice choice of beers.

Came to the Spice Lounge because of its TripAdvisor ranking - deserved as it turned out. Smallish pleasant space, fairly busy even at 7 on a Monday evening. Service mainly good. Food much better than the average High Street Indian restaurant. Balti chicken tikka especially good. Sensible prices. Recommended.

We have visited once before when staying with good friends in the North East. It is tucked away near St Nicholas Church In the heart of Durham.

Easily one of my favourite restaurants in Durham - I love Indian food, and Spice Lounge has always knocked my expectations out of the park whenever I visit. From ringing my booking through on the phone, to serving the food, and checking up on me throughout the night, I cannot fault the staff in any way - very polite, friendly and switched-on.

The food was all presented very well. The portions are more than adequate. All the dishes tasted as good as they looked. Only one minor detail... Hiding overcooked poppadoms at the bottom of the stack. Surely they are cheap and easy enough to replace?

Based on other reviews I expected more of this restaurant. The interior was a bit dingy and the service was somewhat charmless especially the greeting when we arrived (which made me feel that we were a slight inconvenience for coming).

Had a meal here on new years eve. Sat down around 9pm. The restaurant was fairly busy giving a fair atmosphere. Our table was however stuck a bit out of the way, away from most diners. This was a bit disappointing as we booked several weeks in advance.

Went in between Christmas and New Year around 7pm and hadn't booked a table as we thought it would be quiet..we were mistaken the waiter managed to find us a table with minimum fuss but said they needed the table back by 8pm..this was fine as we only wanted a quick curry and a beer anyway..service as a result was quick and the food that came out did not disappoint at all it was lovely and would recommend the onion rice as a side dish too..very reasonably priced and would return when next in Durham..would book ahead next time as the restaurant is quite small and obviously popular

First visit to this restaurant, fantastic food and service. Praise when praise is due, fluffy rice thin and tasty naans and superb currys. 3 of us turned up without a booking and we all left full and happy with the choice we made.

Delicious curries, with friendly and attentive wait staff. We had a fish curry which balanced spice and flavour with the natural taste of be fish - something which can be missing in other curries. We left satisfied, without the usual after-curry-heavy-stomach feeling.

Busy and noisy in a good way adding to the atmosphere. Many and varied dishes served fairly quickly by some happy some not so waiters. Thoroughly enjoyed the mixed grill.

After reading the reviews, we were really looking forward to dining here. The food was average at best, the menu offered too many choices, normally indicating that not all the food is going to be prepared nightly. The food lacked any zing, the food was heavy and we felt quite full after the starters. The main courses becoming a struggle to finish.

I've been to Durham twice, and eaten here both times. I'm going again, and I will do the same. It's actually quite simple. The food is excellent. I've been for Indian food in many different UK cities, and this is as good as any of them. My husband and I decided to re visit Spice lounge for a meal on Saturday night. We arrived at 6pm for the opening. We waited no time to be seated. We ordered a bottle of wine then our meal poppadoms ordered 4 only 3 arrived. My onion bharji starter was lush but hubby had mixed kebab which was not so good. Then 4 males were given the table next to ours. They had obviously been drinking elsewhere. Then they started with the foul language. By now our main meal had arrived which was very good and tasty. I had to speak up and ask the males did they have to use language like that ? A waiter came down and asked if everything was ok ? I explained about them swearing which was not acceptable. The waiter just walked off not saying a word to them. We finished our meal and paid the bill on leaving the table one of the males passed a very rude comment at us. The waiters were standing in the bar area and once again asked if everything was ok ? Our reply was food lovely but didn't like the language from the other table. " Sorry about that " A Saturday night out spoilt through these males. Surely management should of asked then to stop swearing as it was offending other diners. Awaiting a reply from management.

We were really looking forward to visiting this restaurant as we had talked about going there for quite some time. When the opportunity arose for us to be able to visit we jumped at it.

I visited Spice lounge on Sunday evening with my wife and two friends, I've been before, but my wife and friends had not.

Living outside of Britain one of the few things I miss is Indian food, so a visit to Durham gave me the chance to have a curry. This restaurant is very close to the centre and has a good menu with lots of choices. I had difficulty deciding what to take. We had pickles and poppadums to start, then we each picked a starter and a main course. It was all well presented and very tasty, and very filling. The only thing I would suggest to improve is the service: the waiters mumbled and never smiled, although they were very attentive. Overall a good meal at a decent price.

Pequeño gran descubrimiento. No es un restaurante grande, así que pueden necesitar reservar en las horas punta, pero pudimos ir caminando y conseguir una mesa en torno a las 6 de la tarde en una noche de viernes. La comida excelente y la India en un ambiente restaurante sin pretensiones en el centro de una ciudad maravillosa, en inglés. Quizás el personal podría ser un poco más cálido y amable, pero son educados y profesionales y tal vez tienes que esperar demasiado tiempo para que los alimentos lleguen en la mesa, pero chico, es que vale la pena! Nos gusta la comida india y este restaurante sirve algunos de los mejores que he probado fuera en sí Bombay.

Esta es la segunda vez que he visitado este restaurante es mejor acceder desde el mercado si tienes cualquier dificultad, la alternativa es subir una serie de escalones empinados desde la carretera principal. Salón de las Especias es bastante pequeño dentro de una habitación larga y estrecha, con un bar a un lado. La comida que pedimos era entregado bastante rápida considerando éramos un grupo de 10 y era de excelente calidad, los costos son razonables y recomendaría este hotel a cualquiera que busque un buen restaurante indio en Durham City.

for my birthday I decided that I would like to go out for an Indian and after asking about all recommended spice lounge so I used the convenient online booking which was confirmed by email for me. upon arrival our table was ready the server gave us a couple a minutes to look at the drinks menu before coming to take our drinks order, and while we waited for our drinks we had a chance to look at the food menu, the menu was very easy to ready and very good for indicating the heat of the curries. once our drinks where brought to our table the server asked us if we would like to order our food which we did. food came in a very timely manner. summary I would recommend this curry house to anyone who asks and I plan on visiting again soon and making this my go too curry house. very friendly staff.

Estuve con un compañero y un cliente y fue genial. Tienen un amplio menú desde el que tenía cordero exclusiva que era preciosa. Vinimos aquí para una cena de despedida para un amigo. Fue una noche de sábado y había multitudes. Los camareros eran muy maleducado y trató de conseguir fuera de lugar en el extremo así que cabía más gente en esa noche. Después de darnos los menús de postres, que luego no sólo anunció 'postres café'. Pero luego fueron muy molesta cuando habíamos pedido (horrible) de café. Luego me dijeron que había un límite de tres tarjetas para un grupo de 8 personas. Realmente mal. Nunca regresaré. La comida estaba bien, pero estándar.

Primera vez aquí y pedimos pollo con arroz Pilau Balti. Fueron muy buenas! El servicio también fue excelente. También te dan un 20% de descuento si vas a cenar antes de las 7 pm. La cuenta vino y nos quedamos boquiabiertos al ver el descuento y tienen que pedir aclaraciones al camarero. Tengo que decir, que es un principio. Restaurante más cargará para impuestos, etc. Nos quedamos muy contentos con el servicio y la comida, así que dejamos algunos consejos. Volveremos pronto :)

Fuimos un grupo de 7 personas, y tuvimos que esperar más de media hora antes de nuestra mesa (reservado). La comida era buena, pero antes teníamos todo terminado nuestras comidas, los camareros empezaron la aclaración de la mesa. Entonces, a pesar del hecho de que mi hijo acababa de acabado de comer, y tomamos una copa para terminar, nos preguntó si nos podía dejar la mesa como lo necesitaban para alguien más. Dado que sólo había estado en la mesa durante poco más de una hora, y tuvimos que esperar nosotros, esta no era buena. Nos dijeron que nuestro pago era corto, pero de hecho después de una hora por el personal, resulta que el camarero había bajado parte del dinero en su camino a la factura. Este conspirado para tomar el borde de nuestra velada.

Consistencia o mejora es lo que quieres de una segunda, tercera o cuarta visita. Desde mi última revisión he visitado un par de veces, cada vez con colegas. Esta fue mi primera visita en solitario, y el contraste de la atención y el servicio no podía ser más austera.

La comida es excepcional, con una buena variedad de oferta, solemos ir por nuestro favorito, pollo jalfrezi, siempre buena. El servicio es excelente, todo el personal es educado y servicial. We got a takeaway as we live close by in Durham. The quality was excellent, although they gave us the wrong rice which was a shame. Friendly and prompt service also so I would definitely return.
