Smoke + Ash in Birmingham

Had a wonderful meal here last week with friends and my little boy. We were made to feel so welcome! My son said it was the best pizza he has ever had and he is a tough critic! The toppings are so unique and makes a change to the usual classics. Also loved the offerings of salads, starters, and delicious dips! Staff were so attentive and nothing was too much. The new extension looks amazing and shows how popular they are getting, and with good reason!

Waited for table which was absolutely fine, but when we were sat at table we were ignored. Two tables came in after us and were served, we were still not even offered some water. We got up to the bar to order drinks and still no one came to take our order or apologise. Disappointed as the food looked lovely just left before we got a chance to try it as we were not ok with the service.

This is truly one of the best pizza restaurants I’ve ever been to. Not only was the everything incredibly delicious (seriously, best pizza ever), but the restaurant itself is so beautifully designed and everyone is so nice. We even met the owner, Paul, who was absolutely wonderful. We will be coming back!

Amazing feel as soon as we entered Smoke and Ash. Relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. We had the fennel sausage pizza and the Nduja sausage and honey pizza 💯 taste and cooked perfectly. Tiramisu was beautiful as was the Pear and chocolate cake. The Chilli an Yuzu non alcoholic cocktail is tangy and perfect with the Nduja sausage and honey pizza. Our server was lovely and very attentive. We will definitely be back. Thank you for making our Anniversary meal a yummy and enjoyable one 🤗

We hired Smoke & Ash as caterers for our wedding in Digbeth and they absolutely smashed it. The pizza was absolutely delicious and Paul & Clare were great with our guests from start to finish, even teaching our nephew Luca how to make one. They were so helpful in the run up as well, always super chill and professional - exactly what we needed during the madness of wedding planning. We're so glad they've decided to expand into larger scale catering, just as we needed them, and could not recommend them highly enough.

Overpriced Georgian wine (£5 or less in Georgia which they sell here at £36), and very good pizzas and salad.

What a lovely place in the heart of Edgbaston village with fantastic food, great atmosphere and lovely friendly staff. The choice of pizzas is varied, with something for all tastes. We treated ourselves to desserts too and were really impressed with the reasonable price of the meal overall. Loved it

Brilliant. Really lovely pizza, excellent service, prime location! Staff were really attentive, knowledgable about the food and respectful with allergies. I can't tell you how many restaurants have misunderstood or questioned the validity of my allergy. Not here! Brilliant service. PS if you have an Independent Birmingham card there's a good offer on Thursdays.

We had a spectacular lunch at Smoke and Ash. Starting with the bresaola carpaccio and vegan platter of artichoke, pepper, aubergine, sun-dried tomatoes and olives, we then shared an 'Edgbaston Marinara' pizza topped with burrata, as an extra. Although a starter, the heavily laden and generously dressed carpaccio would've made a satisfying main. The vegetables were exquisite, neither too briny nor oily. The tomato and basil sauce on the marinara tasted extremely fresh, and the thin base was charred to perfection. Creamy burrata topped off one of the best pizzas I've had in the UK. Prices were reasonable for the quality. We used our Independent Birmingham cards for 10% off. Greenfield Crescent, where the restaurant is located, is becoming an oasis of independents in Edgbaston village. Both the tram stop and train station (Five Ways) are within walking distance.

Lovely, friendly place with great food and lovely staff. We were a group of 12 and they did an awesome job of getting the delicious food to us all together at the same time, no mean feat with freshly cooked pizza.

We are spoilt for good pizza places in Birmingham, but from the many we have tried Ash and Smoke is our favourite. The quality of the pizza is simply unmatched. The base is both thin but soft with a distinct wood oven aroma, and the flavour combinations and ingredients used excellent.

Late lunch with colleagues. The food was very good, but service was a little slow,l taking orders and bringing drinks.

The above have a van at Botanical gardens. I visited yesterday. I ordered a vegetarian pizza. The pizza was great, but the attitude of the lady taking payment, was not. Just to be clear, this was not the lady inside the van, making the pizzas, this was the lady taking the payments, outside the van. Initially I noticed her attitude with another customer, who wasnt sure how the pager worked. I noticed the lady was quite rude when she explained that the flashing red light simply meant that the pager was working. I noticed when I approached her, she did not smile, she was unfriendly and did not look at me again. Her responses were terse and came across as rude and arrogant. Part of me thinks she thought she was being efficient and in control; in an office perhaps, in the service industry, not so much. When I collected my pizza, again, she did not look at me; she was perfunctory and appeared irritated by my presence. When I asked her for napkins, she pointed to a few tiny napkins, stuffed under the corner of the pizza. The pizza was not even in a box and I had to balance it on my lap. Her rudeness did annoy me and I could see it annoyed the other customer too. In a nutshell, pizza was nice, customer service was very poor. If you want to feel as though only your money matters, this is the place for you.

Has to be one of my favourite pizza places in Birmingham (that is considering the fact that I have only been this one). Aside from that decor had a twist!

Food was good however staff were aggressive and rude and it felt like they didn’t want you there. Would not recommend.

We visited on a wet and cold Sunday afternoon in July. The restaurant was busy enough and there was a good, relaxed vibe in place. The staff provided a particularly warm welcome and were attentive and helpful throughout. The drinks and food was of a good standard and we all enjoyed the pizzas and salads with the pizza on the specials board being especially tasty.

Nice location. My husband and I liked their Stat Wars theme. We were happy that they could accommodate us without a reservation. It's a small restaurant so it can get busy. Pizza 🍕 was good but the dough could be a little crustier. One thing I didn't like was the toilets. The main door to the toilet was always open. From my table, I could see people going in and out of toilets, which, for me, wasn't pleasant at all. I appreciate the place being small, but there are ways of making it pleasant.

This was the best pizza I have eaten in the UK. And I run a pizza business. Staff we able to find us a table at the bar and drinks were amazing (grapefruit cocktail) and was rammed on a Weds night which says it all. Open kitchen which I love as you can see what the chef is doing. Pizza was perfect. Big crust, chewy, with the right amount of char. Sauce was the real star - just bursting with flavour. Anna had the goats cheese salad which was bursting with flavour and these exploding mini tomatoes. Tiramisu looked amazing but we were in a rush so didn’t have time to try it, but we will be back soon!

I'm not sure why this place has so many good reviews... My pizza was burnt completely underneath but the top was undercooked. I'm going to say maybe the oven wasn't working that well that day ?? Then again pizza is like the easiest thing to make? Not sure what's going but I had a bite and the flavours are nice, just need to work on baking at the right temperature for the correct amount of time.

I needed to order for 34 people at very short notice. Paul the manager and team were beyond helpful, accommodating food preferences, delivery timings… overall brilliant service and very happy team. Would definitely recommend

Absoluter Geheimtipp! Schöne kleine Pizzeria in einer schönen Gegend im industriellen Birmingham. Hätte nicht erwartet so gute Pizza im weniger kulinarischen England zu essen. Die Vorspeisen sind Super, die Pizzas Weltklasse! Die Cocktails und der Wein sind auch sehr stimmig. Es gibt aber keine Pasta…was bei der Speisekarte aber kein Problem sein sollte. Alles zu vertretbaren Preisen. PS: die Nutella Pizza mit Sahne und Erdbeeren ist auch sehr Lecker!

Had a fab experience at this restaurant the food , drinks and service were all great . Our starters were very good as well as our pizza mains . I loved the burrata with truffle starter in particular it was delicious . We tried 3 different pizzas and all were lovely . Not only is this place great on food their wine list and cocktails are great too. The signature cocktail chilli , Juzu margarita was so good I had to have a second! I will certainly return !

Smoke and Ash is my favourite place for pizza in Birmingham. You can’t go wrong with any of the pizzas as all of the toppings are divine, and regardless of the toppings, the pizza base still remains crispy. The service itself is also great as the staff are very attentive

We went after hearing good things but were left disappointed by poor service and average pizza. Pizzas appeared soggy when they arrived. Waiter was by himself and was clearly struggling, later in the meal more staff were present but the service did not improve. There are better options in the area for pizza for a better price.

Signor Giovanni and all the other staff members, whose name I forgot, were professional and made a lovely Gorgonzola pizza. Will surely return some day as I would like to try other items from the menu. Mille Grazie Gabriele Macellaio

Great place, exceptional food and service.

Horrendous experience. I booked a table for 2 but cancelled 3 min later. They charged my card £20 the day after. I went and complained, and was told by staff that I should have read the T&Cs. It's not even a "no-show", I cancelled way before they had any chance to make preparations. The staff was rude, arrogant and passive aggressive and kept saying I should have read the T&Cs, rather than simply taking ownership and show some good-will. From a small business I would expect full transparency during a transaction and not having to hide themselves behind T&Cs. Staff told me they would send back my money but that never happened. This was in January. Never have I dealt with a company so deprived of honour, untrustworthiness and arrogance. This is completely unacceptable behaviour from a business trying to make it in the service industry. This place is not worth two pots of piss.

We had a fantastic evening experience at the cocktail and pizza making class on Tuesday evening. The staff are clearly very knowledgeable and have a genuine care and passion for their craft, this really came across during the evening. We were made to feel very at ease and had a great time making our own pizzas and cocktails and we also learned a lot during the experience! The restaurant is elegant and the pizzas were lovely and it was special to eat something we had made ourselves. This really is a gem and we can't wait to return to work our way through the menu. Nice little find! Myself and a group of friends recently visited Birmingham for the Christmas Markets. I found this place online and knew we had to visit following the amazing reviews - the pizza was good, excellent quality ingredients, the cheese and tomato were amazing! Slight deduction as the crust was not charred but actually burnt in places, and it was a little stuffy inside the small restaurant. Moreover, I would definitely recommend booking if you go here, we went on a random Thursday evening, and it was packed!

Absolutely outstanding service from a wonderful and friendly team! Food and drinks were amazing, I would highly recommend, can't wait to go again! And child friendly too!

Food was excellent, fresh ingredients, cooked to perfection, even the salad was great!

From the go, the staff were very unfriendly. Place is tiny. Sat next to the kitchen, which got very hot. Table was not clean, so asked to be moved. The face the waitress pulled, was like I am expected to eat in someone's else mess. Food came out, average at best. Cocktail was welmade. Noticed a gentleman (assuming he was the manager, as he was taking payments) , who was going around asking people if there food was ok, and engaging with them, not once was we approach, which again made us feel very unwelcome. Asked for the bill, after about 10mins had to go up to pay. While everyone else was served in a timely manner. Can't explain the reason for the poor experience, although I do have my own opinions.

We traveled from Toronto to try this delicious pizza and it was worth the trip! We will be back!

Wow. Just wow. Where to begin? Thought we would try something new, so booked in to S&A for some pizza. A beautiful restaurant: cozy, sleek, modern, clean and with a real buzz. A welcome as warm as the pizza oven, amazing staff team, all of who make it their business to ensure everything is perfect - unfussy, attentive and pleasant. Food was incredible. Garlic bread with mozzarella was a delight. Nduja and Teleggio (with honey!) pizza was a spicy and sweet delight and the Napoletana was gorgeous: covered in anchovies, capers and olive. One of the best Tiramisu's we have ever eaten finished us off. Wow! Great drinks selection: very much enjoyed the Birmingham Brewing Co beer too. We'll be back - go and check it out, you won't be disappointed!

I have always had amazing takeaway from Smoke + Ash, but this week I decided to dine in and experience the restaurant atmosphere. The restaurant has a great vibe, relaxed and friendly. The pizzas were all delicious – now a complete convert to Neapolitan-style pizzas. The cocktails were delicious, especially the old fashioned and the margarita. Finally, the service throughout was welcoming, attentive, and knowledgeable. This place exudes excellence and quality in every facet – can’t wait to come back.

The food and service was on point! We really enjoyed our Sunday lunch!

I brought my daughter here for the first time ever today. What a great place. It was lovely. The pizzas are excellent and service efficient and warm. My only complaint (not score affecting) is that on the website it states that kids eat for £1 - which I mentioned when seated. But this was not reflected on the bill when charged £5.50 for a kids pizza. I'd rather pay than kick up a fuss and look cheap. Still perfect apart from that.

Super friendly, and lovely pizzas

We recently ate here on a Saturday night. The staff were very friendly and the ambiance was great. We only booked a table on the afternoon so probably got lucky. The pizza is In my opinion the best in Brum. I had the Salami Napoli. would recommend to anyone who enjoys pizza.

Nice place in pedestrianised Edgbaston village, with a nice but short menu. Great pizza, lovely meat and cheese board to start, and good wine. Service very friendly and welcoming.

The dough tastes like its comes straight from Italy! Can't fault the pizza at Smoke and Ash, one of the best Neapolitan pizza's I've had. I would give it 5 but they have a lack of vegetation options.

[EDITED upon reflection] When a new independent opens in Birmingham, it is really exciting. You really want to like the restaurant and you are rooting for them. Let's start with the positives: The venu is in a lovely location. I like that you can see the pizza oven. And, of course, the food was lovely. My partner's pizza and the garlic bread were great. The crust was perfect. My buratta was delicious. I also ordered a lovely glass of the Italian red wine. It was a great pairing. Dessert was the pistachio cannoli, again perfection. And, side note, the plateware and glasses were nice too. It's details like this that really tie up the visual experience. I'll also mention that the owners really care. After my initial review, they called to have a chat. It's what prompted me to edit my post because I realised it was largely written out of frustration for the customer experience I had at this restaurant but also one that I've had similarly at other places. The restaurant industry is struggling and it means that hiring staff has become all the harder. So what could improve: I had a reservation for 7:30pm on a Friday. Dinner rush, and, I was informed by the owner when he called to discuss my review, the busiest one since opening. This likely explains why some of the staff weren't as attentive to the tables, with taking down the correct order, or with collecting payment in a timely manner. We were greeted by a staff member with an iPad and told he would snag us menus. Our waiter forgot us, though, which meant my partner ended up having to get the menus for us.  When served our meals, mine was not what I ordered — the buratta with rocket, sundried tomatoes, and olives but was served the buratta with raspberry blasamic. But, again, I didn't inform the staff of the mix up. Mostly because I didn't want to make a fuss at the time and didn't want to sit and watch my partner munch his meal while I sat waiting for mine. Mistakes happen though. My frustration came more from seeing another waiter, whom I found out later is the co-owner, doing a stand up job at waiting her table as well as picking up the slack of her fellow wait staff. Lastly, in the original review, I called out the behaviour of some fellow patrons (a group of three women decided to watch several festival music videos on full sound). I can't blame the restaurant for the behaviour of customers. But, to my fellow patrons or future patrons, isn't this behaviour rather inconsiderate? We all deserve to have a good time when out on the town. Is it too much to ask for a bit of care and consideration when pulling out phones in a restaurant? So, self reflection time. Should I have said something at the time rather than write a review a day later? Perhaps. It's hard to speak up at the time and make a fuss and it's often easier to do it online. The intention of my review wasn't meant to say 'don't try this place' it was meant to prompt the restaurant to review their customer service approach, and I guess that's exactly what it did because the owner took the time to speak with me. He cares about his business and really didn't want my original review to dissuade people from trying his scrumptious pizzas. This is why I'm changing the review to give 4 stars because the owner has made every effort to rectify the frustrations I had. Give Smoke and Ash a shot and have a cannoli. They are divine.

Absolutely loved our time in there this evening. Fabulous service ( not in the least rushed, so don’t expect to be “in and out”, and unbelievable food! Starters were so big!! Home cooked pizza was delicious, and of course we needed the obligatory pizza box to take much of it home. Prices were reasonable, and staff were attentive and pleasant. We would definitely go there again and would recommend it completely.

Location wise the restaurant is right in the middle of Birmingham’s ‘Mayfair’ 🤌🏼 quiet and elegant street, impeccable service, delicious and authentic food. Highly recommended for a light dinner with pizza and salad …good choice of wine on a side.

The atmosphere was good and the staff as well. The pizza wasn’t great and it overcooked from edges. To be honest it was burnt. I don’t know how they served it to us. In general they need to observe what they are serving before taking it to any customer table. I wish the best and get better.

Great vibe, the sharing board was really tasty. The pizza was pretty average, which for the place was a let down, I was hoping for something really tasty. So much tomato base that every other flavour was lost.

First time eating here. Excellent first impression. That flatbread, oh my days! Delicious! The Nduja Sausage pizza was rather delicious too! As well as the Nduja dip!
