Random stop off for lunch: absolutely beautiful fish and chips at a really fair price

We went to visit the fish and chip shop planning to have a meal in the restaurant we asked if it was open he yes we asked for a menu and didn't like the attitude of the staff as wasn't offered a menu he just pointed at the takeaway menu and said that was it

Have only ever had takeaway, at least 2 or 3 times a month. The only fish and chips shop in Taunton that has rock salmon. My only complaint is that there are too many chips for 1 person. It would be great if they would keep half my chips to give to someone who can't afford to buy two portions of chips and have children to feed, rather than me throwing them away. I wish someone would listen, I am sure I am not the only single person who feels this way. Please, let's help each other and make less waste. Kind regards Sharon.

My cheeseburger was absolutely disgusting. It was dripping wet with fat. But the I suppose the chips were okay but the burger has totally put me off from going back

Best chippy in Taunton and has been for years. I visited with my parents on a Friday lunchtime, food was excellent as always and rapid service. My dad is in a wheelchair and there were no issues with this at all.

Went in with my daughter just yesterday, very nice food and service, I'm just surprised it isn't busier, will be making the effort to walk 2 mins from the town centre down east reach more often to come here, great food at good prices.

Wir sind heute zum zweiten Mal hier und wurden herzlich eingeladen, doch noch rein zu kommen trotz das die in 5 Minuten schließen. Die Kinder, 14 und 18, mochten das Geschäft. Danke dafür. Das Essen war wirklich sehr gut. Die Pommes waren super und der Fisch mit seiner Panade-> grandios. Gerne wieder

Amazing fish & chips 🤩 The second time I have ordered from Smilies Plaice, food was delivered due to short term enforced post surgery restrictions. Food is as fresh as it was bought in the shop itself, simply beautiful, I also love the lemon garnish that accompanies it too. You won’t be disappointed 👍🏻

They do use oils that have Enumbers in but it's ok just to eat in moderation.

An outstanding fish and chip shop & restaurant. Really fresh fish cooked to order. I ordered a lathe portion of cod: flakey and with a light batter- perfect! The chips were cut properly and not at all greasy because they have been cooked hot with fresh oil. The curry sauce was tangy and not too thick. I dined in as I managed to park opposite abd the price was the same as the take our option. The couple are friendly and I will visit again as soon as possible. I am very selective about where I eat fish and chips. I would agree with other individuals from Taunton: best fish and chips in Taunton. I reside in Chard some of the time and this is far better than anywhere else .

Very fresh cod, nice chips- perfect texture potato. A 9/10, my first visit. A satisfying meal before a long car journey.

So, this place is as good as Squires in Braunton which was my local. Who cares about that I hear you ask? Well they had a Multi-Awarded Best British Fish & Chip Shop. The awards are probably still on the wall down there in Devon 🤷🏼‍♂️

Always decent food, good size portions and not too long a wait

Great place for Chips (plus huge selection of thi gs to go with them!) Had jumbo sausage on many occasions with curry sauce. Had friends whom.had fish and said it was very good..

2nd time we’ve been to Smileys and each time it’s been the best! Lovely fresh chips not greasy and nice service from the lady which I presume is the owner along with the gentleman there. We won’t go anywhere else now. Happy new year to you !

OK, it's a fish and chip shop with sit down eating, if you want it. We stopped and ate our fish and chips off plates, and very nice fish and chips they were too. I'd highly recommend you wander up here from the town centre. It will only take you 5 minutes and you'll be fed and watered for the same price as a few coffees from the town centre chains.

Absolutely lovely cod and chips really tasty the fish wasnt too wet (which has happened at other fish and chip shops) the batter was crispy, and the chips not too greasy. Highly reccommended.

Delightful fresh flakey cod in a crisp batter. Good quality chips fluffy and no residual oil. Enough to provide a solid meal a 9=10, my first visit.

Sat inside, mouth-watering, knowing that I will get a great tasting takeaway with ample portions. Usually go with chicken breast and chips, but tonight having fish and chips - tempted away from my staple by a cheeky portion from one of my wife’s takeaways. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, they know my preference, and confirm that I only want salt and no vinegar. I take my order, wrapped in paper, to the car for the five-minute journey home. I like good quality coleslaw as a side. So, When I get home, I start by putting the side on my plate. The fish is too long to fit on the plate, so I need to cut it in half and lay it around the coleslaw. Then I add about half the chips and my plate is full. The batter of the fish is crisp with just a little of the oil from being fried keeping it moist. It has a gorgeous flavour and the coleslaw I have added is a perfect compliment to both the fish and the chips. Eating off of a tray on my lap and watching a good film. Food finished, plate clean, stomach full – never disappointed.

Upon arriving we find two sausages and pies cooked. We were greeted in a way that appeared forced and like our presence put them out. When asked what would we like we felt not much of a choice so ordered sausage and chips twice. He took money and walked off. I was puzzled as to what was happening. We were waiting, not one smile, did not tell us why food was not been done. The lady in the shop kept stairing at us. We then asked for a curry sauce and she then pulls out a container and gets a curry mix out. She is now making it. The only words were, salt and vinegar and the price. Not even a thank you. The restaurant part was in darkness. It was a terribe experience... value for money was average,, food was ok. Would never go there again. Staff need to know that they need to be friendly to customers because we are what keeps them going. Still using single use plastic bags which make the contents sweat. Overall below average but not terrible, fast food needs to be available and ready. If it is not ready just say.... "we are just waiting for ......." rather then ignore us.

Called in on the way back from our holiday in Cornwall. Found it was in our vicinity and the fact we could eat in and they had a toilet was a big bonus. Ordered fish and chips, waited a short while for them to be freshly cooked. The staff were friendly. Everywhere appeared clean and so was the cutlery and crockery. When the food came it was piping hot and delicious, with a fresh wedge of lemon. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this little gem……….

If you get an order wrong that's OK. So when you receive a phone call stating this, fix it. Its called good customer service. Don't hang up the phone and do nothing! Will not be ordering from you again!

Such a disappointing takeaway of fish and chips. The chips were disgusting and definitely not fresh. The Fish wasn’t much better. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

Wow, I've not been to Smiley's Plaice for a while .. and this evening they did not disappoint. Their fish and chips was off the scale good. Freshly cooked as you'd expect... chips soft and fluffy inside with a great crunch on the lightly fried outside ... the cod batter was a perfect thickness and cooked to perfection. Really fresh and tasty. I'd recommend their curry sauce and mushy peas too. Thanks Smiley's.. highly recommended! Defo one of Taunton's finest.

...very much I've decided, the thought of it is so often better than the reality. Tonight I've just had one of the best fish and chip experiences I've had in ages!! Thin, crispy, non greasy batter without that soggy uncooked inner layer you often get , the cod was sparkling white and cooked to perfection, tender and moist, no hint of the chewiness that comes from over cooking or sitting around in a hot cabinet. Chips were also as good as you'd wish for. Thank you!!

My fish and chips were definitely NOT cooked to order, as my meal appeared within minutes. The fish was rather tired and the chips were like armour piercing bullets. I was very disappointed as the "plaice" was recommended. I marked it as average as so many chippies get away with serving tired food, though truly it only deserved 2 stars. If I go back I'll insist on freshly cooked.

Rubbish. Had to wait 15 mins for chips at 12:00. The chips were not edible prob yesterdays. Dont bother with this one

I have made this my local fish & chip place. I have used it for many years. Usually phone through my order & even on a busy Friday,they get it ready in less than 20 minutes. Try their PEA FRITTER as I order it every time for myself & when friends visit. Generous portion on Chips & EXCELLENT service. Have also eaten in their restaurant area. Never had a bad experience in the last 8 years when I first started using them.

The fish here is the best I have had in Taunton! There's a bit of a wait when you go in and order but that's due to it being freshly cooked instead of sitting around for hours like a lot of fish and chip shops. Highly recommend!

I Orderd a large fish and chips and it was far from large, fish looked like a batterd sausage and the portion of chips were tiny! Curry sauce was nice.

Chicken bits in batter rather tasteless and the chips also uninspiring. My colleague had a sausage in batter that was good. Not the chip shop it once was unfortunately.

It's not often that I order battered beefburger, curry sauce, chips and mushy peas - it was my preferred order as a teenager, nearly 50 years ago.It was great - served piping hot, by a friendly member of staff. Lovely clean premises right in the heart of Taunton. I am not in Taunton often but would gladly go again.

Best chippy in Taunton. Despite the fact I live nearly two miles away, and have a chippy just around the corner from home, I still prefer to make the journey across town to Smiley's Plaice. Lovely cod, and really great chips, each and every time!

Saturday lunch stop after 180 miles saw the chippy and parking space opposite. Fresh cooked and delicious. Recommended.

Have been here twice now & I can honestly say it's the best chicken & chips I have ever had, it's very clean & very friendly would highly recommend it a the fish & chips are spot on as well.

The 'Golden Oldie' package for £4.50 was brilliant value. More chips than we could eat but great fish. We'll go there again.
