A friendly welcome at the door, lovely coffee and MASSIVE scones (cheese or fruit). Really couldn't fault this little cafe and are looking forward to going back. Though we didn't try them, there were breakfasts, soups, cakes and more on offer. And the plant centre had amazing trees, shrubs and flowering plants that we really enjoyed browsing around. A proper nursery with muddy paths, hosepipes lying around, and staff who know things, not a garden centre full of tat!

After a lovely time exercising our dogs in the beautifully secure 'Smeaton Dogwood' we were ready for a cuppa, but the sound of Cauliflower and Mature Cheddar soup, served with a cheese scone was just TOO tempting. Boy were they a good combination!! Great service, this place is just such a find. We have a bit of thing about cheese scones and these got an A+ rating - cheese on top and loads of cheese inside too. Served nicely warm - with a pat of butter for each half. Others should learn from you!!

Smeaton is great for plants, but the cafe is terrible. Arrived for a light lunch, there were no tables available so we had to wait, which was ok, after 30 minutes a table became free. We sat down and asked if we could have extra seats as there was 5 us, 3 adults, 2 children. We were told they didn’t have extra chairs. We were then approached and told we weren’t allowed to sit at that table as it could only fit 3-4. I asked why and the excuse was there would t be much room on the table. I said this was fine but was told point blank that we couldn’t sit there. Around us were large picnic benches that can sit 8, with only 2 people sitting on them, and yet we had no choice but to either wait longer or leave. Really bad service, poor management, rude staff. Won’t be back and won’t recommend.

We've been here several times and the service has usually been erratic but the food/drinks good quality so we go back. However, no longer! The service were waiting 40 minutes for simple sandwiches! When we had asked the server (young and pleasant but clearly inexperienced) where our food was we heard a tirade from the open kitchen. Our food arrived eventually and the order was wrong - we had had enough by then and decided that it was time to leave. So be aware that apparently customers are not allowed to expect service on busy days and the 'cook' let us know that very loudly and unpleasantly as we left! We are both well aware of the challenges of running a smallish business plus how important customer care is and always allow an element of flexibility before making a judgment. However to be treated so rudely and almost shouted at is a step too far - we won't be back so be warned if you do go to Smeaton to be prepared and eat beforehand! Probably best to wear your thick skin too in case you get told off for placing an order...

What a find. The weather was dull but the nursery brightened up our afternoon. The quality of their plants on offer was second to none and it was a delight to find plants that were a bit different. We stopped for a coffee and were greeted by friendly staff, who promptly brought our order. The cakes were fresh and the coffee and tea were hot. Just what we needed. We chatted to Steve, who spent time and tried to help us with a problem we have in our garden. I only wish we stayed more local but we will pay another visit before our holiday is over and take some plants home. Thanks for everything.

We had been before but many years ago and were surprised at how busy it was on a dull Thursday afternoon. Interesting garden centre in an old walled garden that used to belong for many generations to the Buchan-Hepburn family. The highlight of our visit was sitting outside with our choice of hot drinks and chocolate cake watching the birds - robins, blue tits, great tits, wood pigeons and the amazingly friendly Rob Roy the Pheasant (Green rather than Common?) who happily, if not daintily ate from our hands. Great little gift shop attached to the cafe where we picked up some books and prints. All the staff we so friendly and we also got chatting to some wonderful people with highly entertaining stories who we assumed were family of the owners! It won't be years before we go back again.

Rude is an understatement. The signs on their website and at the entrance said they closed at 4pm. We arrived at 3:20 and asked for a sandwich. We were told that they only have cakes and that the kitchen was closed at 3pm. We said that the sign had told us 4pm and we were told that 3pm is on their website and on the menus. So, having read their sign, we had to log onto their website and read the small print OR walk the 10' up their driveway to read the menu's exclusions. Hmmmmm!!! The manageress then told us that they'd been working since 9:30am so they were not willing to help us. If the café closes at 3pm, why not show this on the sign? In the end we left with eating and were told that if we didn't like then "on your way".

Dreadful staff who clearly need training, food was not fresh (bread felt hard to the touch. Awful and we will not be back! We travel from South Queensferry to shop at garden centre there so unfortunately the disappointing standards in this tea room will also have a knock on effect on people purchasing plants. I will be staying closer to home in future! Snowflake generation where work seems more like an effort than a necessity!

We spend lots of our weekends in East Lothian, but hadn’t been to Smeaton for a long time. Now I remember why. The Nursery itself is ok but the Tearoom needs a massive upgrade. Staff have very interaction with customers, the menu choice is very limited, staff are shouting directions at each other from the very open kitchen area. There were four choices of cake, no traybake. My husband ordered the Lunch Special, only to be informed it was sold out despite it only being 12:30pm (must have been a very small pan of Chilli) The building itself, is cold, tired and lacking any redeeming features. Staff are young and obviously have no customer service training. Drink arrive on a tray and you help yourself !! Reading many of the other reviews it seems like nothing much has changed in the past couple of years. Sadly, it’s not somewhere we’ll be returning to, or recommending to others.

We ordered the Cream Tea - £11.50 each for a sandwich, a scone with jam and cream, and a cup of tea. The sandwiches were made with ordinary supermarket sliced bread. Only bread, meat and mustard or horseradish. No butter, salad, crisps, garnish. The scones were very crumbly and dry. We had a tiny pot of cream between us and a small dish of jam to share. There was not nearly enough to go with the scones. I asked for some butter, which they brought. It was lacklustre, disappointing and overpriced for what it was but insult was added to injury when we discovered they had charged me an extra 50p because I had an Earl Grey teabag (not a premium brand) and they charged us 15p per little butter pat. They did not mention it before adding it to the bill. It felt very greedy. There are so many much nicer places in the area. Avoid.

Smeaton Nursery is such a lovely place with helpful charming staff but it is let down badly by the cafe. At 1.45pm on a Sunday they told us they were closed because they had too many orders. Not that we would have to wait, they had actually shut the cafe. Extraordinary. Top tip, limit the menu to things you can quickly and easily serve and keep the customers coming. The cafe needs a new operator pronto.

I understand that we are all getting to terms with how cafes work in general under these covid times, but I was left speechless after a visit yesterday. We are all trying to support local businesses, and from what I saw yesterday, I won’t be spending my money there. They had one staff member front facing, who must have dropped out of charm school. She was so unnecessarily abrupt and rude, and was clearly flustered. In my mind if you are asking people to queue, why not take there order before you seat them? We were seated and shouted at that she’d be back to take an order. Over ten minutes went by, she still hadn’t come. When she did, she didn’t even look up from her tablet. I understand that these are hard times, but perhaps have a friendly polite staff member on the front facing work. A smile goes a long way!

The nursery is very well stocked with average prices. Bought a couple of plants that I've been after for ages & was thinking I would have to send away for. Spoilt for choice & all in good condition. Great selection of pots.Cafe was very busy, but was worth waiting for. I've read some of the other comments & would say that maybe the business is a victim of success. It's in a fairly isolated area probably without much passing trade, so will be difficult to judge day by day on staff & supplies required. I'm more inclined to be generous than I would be reviewing a main stream garden centre. I had a sandwich, which was OK, but I have a suspicion that the staff had to nip out to buy an extra loaf, (Warburtons sadly!). To those that visited on Mother's Day, all I would say it that everywhere serving food on that day will be full!

Extra hot water came without charge. The staff are friendly and helpful and the surroundings charming and warm. An added pleasure is being able to watch blue tits and robins feasting on the bird feeders attached to the outside of the windows and being entertained by the various birds which inhabit the garden. The toilets are clean and warm. Feeling really full we enjoyed a trip round the garden centre which is well kept and full of lovely plants. We also had a walk round the lake. As the name suggests this is more of a nursery with a tea shop attached, rather than the other way round. So much so that one has to go through the plant area to the tea shop with no real clue how to get there - we had to ask twice and got lost on the way out. This, and the state of the paths, made it not quite as ideal for my 90 year old Mum as I had hoped, but as the day was fine we made it without mishap.

We came here after a walk around Binning Wood. We all had pea soup. It was tasty and a generous portion. At noon, there was only one person serving in the cafe. The other person was on a break. The soup and my coffee came quickly but the water and the tea that were ordered were never delivered to the table.

Visited this place today for some lunch, found the garden centre really peaceful and full of some quality plants. Was impressed by the lack of tat and easy going sales staff. As for the tearooms was very impressed by the sereen soroundings and general friendlyness and helpfullness of the staff. Soup and sandwich was well up to par and coffee was good quality. Would highly recommend for a visit and was impressed to see they catered for dogs. All in all very good place to visit in some stunning surroundings.

I took my mother to the tearooms on Saturday at 3.30 - the signs all say they close at 4. She has dementia so trips out aren't that easy, but she lives gardens so it seemed like a good idea. It was 3.35 when we walked to the tea rooms but the staff had already cleaned up, rubbish bags outside, and we were told no teas were being served although from 3.45 they offered take aways. My mother has two walking sticks so it must have been pretty obvious holding a tea and a cake wasn't really an option. I pointed out it was only 3 37, but it was clear they wanted to close early and that was that. If they want to close at 3.30 that is fine but the signs on the road and inside should reflect this. There was also a family of 5, another elderly couple and it was clear we were not the only ones turned away. The plant centre stays open until 4.30. I was quite saddened by their dismissive and lax attitude. I somehow expected more.

Visited whilst heading home for a spot of lunch. Beautiful setting and the tea room was very quirky. Great selection at a good value. Leave room for the scone with jam and cream absolutely delicious. Look forward to our next visit.

Called in here on a lovely sunny day and it was quite busy inside and out. We went inside and waited to be served the waitress eventually came and too our order. There was three of us and we all decided to opt for a glass of Fanta each and only two of us ordered a cup cake. After waiting 15 mins my niece went to ask what was happening about our order and was told it would only be a minute as the cup cakes were waiting on the tray but after 25 mins we decided we had waited long enough and told the waitress to cancel the order and all she could say was are you sure. Its hardly rocket science to put 3 glasses of juice and 2 cup cakes on a tray . They definitely need to take on extra staff as we were not the only ones not happy with the service.Wont be rushing back any time soon.

Same problem as others, huge delays, surely not worth waiting 25 minutes for a drink, let alone 45 minutes for food, particularly with children in tow. A shame because the garden centre looked lovely.

This should be a really good place to get a relaxing lunch. We waited 30 minutes for someone to be bothered to take our order only to be told there was a 45 minute wait to get a panini made!! Settled for cake which was available. Many staff working at sloth like pace. Won't be back.

It is always a pleasure these days to find a garden centre that actually grows its own plants and looks after them properly rather than just bus them in to be sold off .There was a varied selection of plants with an excellent range of trees all looking well.Lunch was enjoyed from a generous menu that was keenly priced. We sat in a fine conservatory .The soup was excellent, bean chowder, however a touch too salty. The home baking was very good.

My mum and I often visit the nursery for plants, but had never been to the tea room. We decided to go for a scone and a cup of tea, and were greeted by friendly staff and table service outside. The atmosphere was very relaxed and outside seating was great on this sunny day. Mum and I ended up opting for the "Cream Tea" which consists of tea, scones and sandwiches for just £6 per person, which I thought was very reasonable. We were very full afterwards! The only thing I would suggest would be about the sandwiches, to perhaps use some really nice quality bread. The bread used was nice but it was just something you could get out of a packet in Tesco. I think the sandwiches could be greatly improved with some good quality bread! :) Other than that, cannot fault!

My friend and I were walking the John Muir Way and stopped in for lunch. Both of our lunches were good, fresh and homemade. The scones are very delicious. We ate outside in the garden and it was lovely.

Had booked a table for 2 adults and 2 kids for Sunday lunch (carvery). Arrived and stood waiting for about 10mins before we were seated. Had a sinking feeling at this point as the place is v dated and there seemed to be little staff on. Initially only 1 behind the carvery and another who was on the bar and serving. We were taken to our table and left. Sat for 10 mins waiting for our order to be taken. Another table arrived with a new waiter and I overheard them being told to order at the bar. I caught waiter and checked this. Queued at bar where we had another wait and then finally got to carvery. A family ahead of us had given up by this point and plates half full asked for their money back. We persevered. Food was ok. Plates were cold and portions of meat were tiny. Extremely disappointed in our experience and would not go back. Do not recommend.

This place has some of the best food in east Lothian. The currys are always good and the desserts are so yummy. I recommend going.

Xmas party night with work. Two course meal which was ok but definitely not worth £50 each. Very small portions of turkey, roast potatoes and some hard veg. Apple crumble for pudding which costs pence to make was ok. Expected more to be honest.
