Poor. Waited over 15 minutes for them to make a coffee, which I was having in. The reason? They continually prioritised take away orders, rather than customers in the shop. It eventually came, delivered by a stroppy bloke, who was arsey and unapologetic. Croissant was also rubbish. Think they should bin offering 'eat in' and just do take-away, as they are pretty awful to the eat-in customers. Really not good enough, considering how expensive they are.

The coffee was excellent but the place is super super hot - needs some fans, or aircon. Hard to work in such environment.

Shame really. Went in today at 9.30 (I checked) and abruptly told the coffee and pastry deal had ended. It was funny really as it was clearly 9.30 and they just didn’t want me to ask for a muffin as all pastries had run out. No excuses for just plain being wrong. Shame as day before the female server was super kind. Really poor vibes. Perhaps the owner and male server should take lessons from her.

I bought a sandwich and coffee, got it to my house which is about one minute away, found an ant on my sandwich inside the brown paper bag.

It’s gone downhill so rapidly - presumably due to staff turnover and inexperience. The lady on the till was too busy on her phone to actually process my order, so I waited 10 mins for food that didn’t come until I asked about it, and it was obvious she just hadn’t bothered. It finally arrived cold in the middle after someone hastily tried to rectify the situation. Meanwhile the coffee itself was burnt and bitter to the point of undrinkable. The one member of staff who was actually on it did give me a free coffee stamp but honestly I doubt I’ll ever go back, what a shame. It’s nearly £8 for a pastry and a coffee too, just dreadful all round.

Coffee tasted so bad I had to take it back. Refused a refund, and completely rude so wasted 7.20.

Friendly staff and lovely range of food, the atmosphere was bustling bur not too loud that you couldn't have a good conversation or get some work done. It's very close to Hove station and so very convenient.

The decline of the big Brighton Coffee brand will be startling to watch. On the closure of the Seven Dials branch to a much needed grown up drinking venue I thought to grab a Small Batch after around a year of not frequenting. Took a detour to Goldstone on the way to get a haircut and was muchly disappointed to walk out with a boiling milky tasteless £3.15 Flat white. I was flat too. No wonder this Business is going to the dogs. As I turned around I noticed all the dead plants hanging from the plant boxes and the boarded up co working place next door. Flour Pot goes from strength to strength and must be absolutely jumping for joy.

Heartbreakingly, they’ve permanently closed the workspace area. This was my go-to “work from not home” spot. Still great coffee, and there are tables near the counter and outside. And the staff are always lovely of course.

2 servers were more interested in chit chatting about management than offering customer service. Milk was not frothed correctly which bugs me when I'm dying for a proper latte! It's a let down as small batch is the best coffee in Brighton

I have used S.B. Since it started as a coffee bar. Always been amazing. Until now. What happened to the buzz? Fun? Friendlyness? Also make the coffee. 4 waiting no coffee served. Real shame loved my daily visit.

Thank you so much to the lovely barista working yesterday afternoon when my toddler decided to have a meltdown- she took the time to chat to her and distract her (and me!!). REALLY appreciate it :)

I have been into my first coffee shop. Fascinating. All the people are really edgy, argumentative or impatient. I am sure that is purely coincidence. I am here for warmth. But I am about to break my new year's resolution on cost of living commentary. Diet Coke can £2. I ordered the last piece of the carrot cake. Looked good, £3.25, and chunky compared to the Blueberry Muffin. The barista went over to plate up and took ages. When she came back she had sliced off about 5mm and that translucent sashimi was what I was getting. There will be another four slices available from that valuable resource. Imagine the value of one of those big round ones. I made a light hearted comment and shook my head. I probably should have refused it, but cake refusal is a big ask.

Frustrating experience. Didn’t get what I asked and paid for, was told they didn’t have enough staff to grill a cheese croissant, and felt like I’d caused an inconvenience because they’d accidentally made drinks to eat in rather than takeaway. Appreciate it’s busy but just wouldn’t go back or recommend based on that visit, sorry

A Quiet Cafeteria near Hove railway station with cool ambience.

Friendly service on the till, very grumpy service from people making the coffee. Little understanding and care for anyone in a rush due to getting a train. Clearly chatting between themselves about customers who had trains to catch being in a hurry (made me feel v uncomfortable, I hadn’t mentioned anything but I was also in a rush) I had left plenty of time but service was slow. I appreciate it can be stressful working in a hurry during busy periods but doesn’t excuse being so rude, train goers are surely a key customer type? I will get coffee elsewhere on my way to the station, somewhere speedy and more importantly cheerful.

Went to the Goldstone Vilas store. Asked for one bag of beans and one bag of ground coffee. Had to explan it three times and got two bags of ground coffee. I just lost the will to live where he handed me the bags and went home disappointed.

I come here every other day as a break from the office. Coffee is always great, the food tasty, service quick, and the team are really friendly and chatty. Love it here

Went in at 4 and couldn't get a an actual cup, only a takeaway cup which is poor really, everyone else who got there presumably a few minutes before had a cup. How much time is this really saving g them. Then the flustered manager begrudgingly let me sit in the large seating area he was desperate to shut. Maybe if you paid the staff an extra half hour to clean up at the end of the day they wouldn't feel so hard done by serving customers near the end of the day and I would have had a better experience. Shame really as I love the coffee. And another thing, your worthing branch closed, it was poor service in there too, don't suppose that's related though. You guys really need to get your act together.

We had a nice lunch served by a pleasant member of staff who was working hard on her own! The only downside was the noise of crockery and cutlery being stacked and put away.

Lad serving was friendly, girl bit DIPPY - left my coffee on the machine until I enquired where it was she found it still there and she was serving other customers by now…and it wasn’t very hot☹️…nice enough though and coffee tasty albeit lukewarm….

Was our favourite places until the new gentleman started, we are construction builders next to the coffee shop, every morning we had lovely coffee's until the new gentleman started. Unfortunately the new gentleman in the morning ( 21/03/22 Monday) extremely arogant and rude ! Doesn't like his job, and I believe we don't deserve to see the first thing in the morning someone angry .

This place used to be my lockdown haven for coffee & a great conversation. The place has really gone downhill . Owners are trying to squeeze too much out of the premises at the expense of the customer . The tables installed opposite the counter have created a seriously stressful & uncomfortable area . Having to wait for your coffee with people squeezing past you to get back out the door . It’s non operational & promotes zero social distancing . New staff lack training & it’s always a risk whether or not you get a decent coffee or wait 15 minutes for the pleasure as they’re too busy talking amongst themselves . Will miss the manager who left recently. He made the best coffees . Won’t be returning as I leave feeling very stressed just watching the chaos .

Nice surroundings but they don't bring your coffee to you, you have to wait at end of counter to collect it. I expected a better service from a place this size.

Goldstone Villas in Hove branch. Lovely staff very nice coffee. Second occasion that I have been very disappointed in the food. First attempt in August The bacon roll- a scraping of own made tomatoe sauce, roll very dry, bacon tough. Not enjoyable. Second attempt in October Pancakes with bacon and maple syrup- syrup watered down. Pancakes tasted very strange, bacon nice. Overall, not enjoyable. Whilst I will still order coffee from SmallBatch, I won't order food again

Oh dear, what a shame, what's happened to Small Batch? All gone a bit downhill. Just been served a cold bitter latte, not just slightly cold, only noticed when through the barriers at the station, female barista slow and distracted. Everything has slipped during lockdown it seems, whereas Flour Pot has thrived. Would no longer recommend. Used to be a very regular customer at Seven Dials branch, thought I would give Hove a shot ..same issues here. Shame. And the laptop ban is very ill conceived. Your Goldstone premises is pretty large, you could happily accommodate people with laptops who are of course also very regular customers..

Sure, the coffee is quite good... but I sincerely wish the management would reconsider accepting cash as payment. I find tapping my card for such nominal amounts to be frustrating and difficult to track my spending, but the bigger picture is that not accepting cash is purposely excluding those who are most vulnerable in our society: the elderly, those without bank accounts, people who work in a cash-based industry. A cashless policy is basically saying to those individuals: 'you don't matter.' I asked the barista what percentage of customers ask to use cash as payment, and he replied about 10%... so a cashless policy is willfully excluding 10% of your customer base. I can understand during the height of Covid, but not reverting to accepting cash payments as restrictions ease just feels like laziness... as does the no laptop policy. Please reconsider these alienating new policies... reading other online reviews, your local client base is obviously unimpressed and now going elsewhere. As for me, I'll go to Costa who are happy to accept my cash.... and have no issues with using my laptop!

Great local coffee place. A little expensive but it's the best coffee you will get in the Brighton and Hove area. Staff are friendly, place is clean and not often very busy, has a great smell of the coffee beans being roasted.

Decent coffee, nice staff and pastries are great. A bit of a disappointing experience; apparently new owners - I was one of only 2 customers in the cafe and spent about an hour there, was asked to leave as they now have a weekend no laptops policy. Never had an issue elsewhere getting a little work done while enjoying a coffee which is a shame as it’s a nice place and very close to home. Unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend to a friend nor will I go back :(

It is good coffee, but there's no good sweetening option for people avoiding sugar. Yes, they have agave syrup, but don't let that fool you. Agave syrup is definitely still sugar. I am a diabetic and can't have agave syrup. Not suitable for diabetics or people who just don't want sugar but still like sweetened coffee. The coffee itself was pretty good, but let down by no sugar-free sweetening option.

Coffee is unreal, staff members are always friendly. The only downside is the lack of cleanliness - every time we visit, there are several stained tables with dirty cups and plates on them. If cleanliness was improved, Small Batch would definitely be a 5* cafe for us.

English breakfast tea very nice, English breakfast for what you got was too expensive at £11 and bacon was tough, maybe it was cooked in a microwave. Staff were pleasant and helpful.

I feel very disappointed to feel the need to write this review but, I feel it is well over due. If I were rating the floor staff they would recieve 5 stars across the board. I regularly go in goldstone villas, norfolk square and the one by palmeria square and I can not rate staff on the ground highly enough however, it would seem they are having to deal with intolerable managment, whom sit in an office making decisions without consulting with or listening to the staff who experience the running of the establishment everyday. First up, with the most recent change... a charge for oat milk. Honestly?! I first converted to oat milk when small batch did a promotion with oatly and offered a FREE coffee if I had oat milk. I have not looked back. For them to now charge for it. Madness!! Recently small batch has become laptop free. Which from a money making saving perspective I understand, you cant have people sitting for hours with one coffee. However, small batch has always been a place where I like many others chose to hold meetings and do a few emails, as a freelancer, having this sanctuary has been very helpful over the years. Well obviously not anymore. Who ever ordered the new tables and chairs obviously has never used a tape measure in their lives. They simply do not work in the space. Artificial plants, urgh. I wont even mention the over priced awful food. I am so disappointed that all the changes have made the place worse not better but what pains me most is the fact that staff across the three different cafes have all voiced that managment DO NOT listen. Well done. Your damaging your business and upsetting your staff.

This place used to be amazing, but the new owners have a no-laptop policy. As someone who always orders food and drink and doesn't out stay their welcome when using a laptop, this has put me off Small Batch entirely. I see that it's put off the clientelle too, as I sit in a completely empty (former) workspace. Good luck, you laptop nazis!

No laptops is the most bizarre policy for a business that’s needing customers to sit and order coffee on repeat. I’ve just had to get a refund on my food and drink and leave as I could not use my laptop. I’ve also had to go to Costa to hold my meeting which involves three of us, all drinking coffee, all eating food. As I left the shop I was one of two people sat in the place. Madness 🤯

The staff were friendly, welcoming and polite. The workspace area had plenty of seating and outlets close to every seat. The drinks were well priced and the bathrooms were clean and very well designed.

It was not busy , 3-4 staff but still took ages to get served , staff not bothered ... had to wait 5 min for two coffees and it was not at all busy . Had a vegan cake it was really dry and tasteless so left half .. finally ,asked for the Danish pastry ,however ,the guy serving ,was really rude and said it’s a cinnamon something .. it was a type of Danish pastry !!!! Coffee ok nothing special .
