Superb meal, and excellence service. A massive thank you to the team for a lovely evening and meal. The cod was out of this world, as was the rest of the meal. We could praise the evening enough.

After difficulty in actually getting booked in plus a request for dinner on our overnight stay - we were delighted with the result. Firstly , a beautiful part of the world with amazingly quick access to the A1 Our bedroom , the Hayloft , was very spacious, good quality bed linen and bath towels . The bed was extremely comfortable and the bathroom was immaculate with an excellent shower - thank you Helen . Pre dinner drinks were served by a friendly bar man who escorted us to our table for dinner . Although the restaurant was busy the service was superb and we were well looked after by Laura . The meal was well presented , well cooked and with good quality ingredients - house wine excellent. I would not hesitate in recommending The Six Bells - we will return . Thank you to everyone who made our stay so enjoyable ….

The meal was outstanding, well presented and tasted delicious. The decor of the six bells is also without fault. The evening was let down by less attentive service that I know is normally provided … it was so slow that we did not leave a tip. The staff seemed too busy to notice when to come to the table. One member of the team gave an excellent summary of the available desserts, but I am afraid he was the exception. We had to ask for the bill as once we finished our desserts nobody attended to us. Once presented with the bill, we again had to ask a member of the team if we could pay it. The Six Bells is one of my favourite restaurants, but I feel little disappointed last nights experience.

We have visited here twice now, both for special occasions and coincidentally for Sunday roasts. This is a really lovely restaurant with great food, amazing service and a lovely wine list! It makes a great midway point for our family meet ups and we will be making this a regular spot after two 10/10 experiences.

A fabulous setting in a village. Easy parking now they have a bigger car park 50 metres from the pub. Outdoor sheltered seating provides a great atmosphere. Heaters visible for dining when the weather is not so kind, and shade when the sun is beating down! Only umbrellas' for the shelter nearest the road, but more than adequate. We came for Sunday lunch, and both service and food were excellent. Plenty of choice and lots of vegetables'! Looks like there is a rotisseries for chicken etc, but was not fired up for Sunday lunch. Food was reasonably priced, drinks were great, but slightly over market rate in my opinion. Good that there was local beer available though. Definitely more than your usual village pub experience. Will certainly return when in the area next.

This place is very sweet and looks absolutely amazing to look at, the ambiance is fab and the staff approachable and very friendly. The food was average, I had lamb (was a bit fatty, the bits that weren’t was lovely and soft, and my hubby the fish and chips, the veg that came with the lamb was cooked well and there was a lot of it too, the gravy for me was too watery. The fish and chips were good and my husband enjoyed the chips! The puddings sadly weren’t that great and for the cost expected something a bit better, the strawberry pavlova had about 2 strawberries chopped a few bits of crushed meringue pieces and the rest was stodgy cream, the tiramisu was very basic and dry. Overall it was an average visit and I don’t think we’d go out of our way to go there to eat again, sitting outside on a nice day with a pint however we’d definitely be up for.

Been going for years, feel it's really losing it's way. Food is becoming very average, food presentation is almost weird it's so basic and the menu has become too limited. Service is regularly rushed so if you want a leisurely time this isn't the place. My advice is stick to the pizzas which are great.

This was my third visit following a recommendation two years ago. Once again I found the accommodation, service and the food to be excellent. The bedrooms are spotlessly clean and well appointed. There is an excellent dining area and well stocked bar. Breakfast is beautifully cooked and presented. I would unhesitatingly recommend The Six Bells to anyone planning to stay in the area. Making a reservation for dinner in advance is essential, as it is very popular with the locals too and understandably so. I look forward to my next visit.

My partner and I booked into the hotel for a nice relaxing getaway, we are fairly local but wanted to have a special night and we certainly did at Witham. The service was fantastic as was the food. The accommodation was superb, the comfiest bed I think I have ever slept on. The staff go above and beyond bringing fish cakes out as appetisers on the house and even bought some lovely after dessert treats as we booked to celebrate our anniversary which I thought was a lovely touch! Breakfast was great also, so lovely to see the pub thriving and busy in the second week in January. Overall was a perfect local get away which I would recommend to anyone! Thank you all for making it special for us

The Six Bells in Witham On The Hill... what an experience! From eating half a rotisserie chicken, to enjoying venison tarts... this was delightful. The atmosphere in here was incredible. From the outside seating and lighting, to the wooden décor just beautiful. We went around December time in 2023, and loved it. Staff were so helpful and polite too, which brought this whole experience together! For starters we had the salt and chilli squid, and i had the Leek and potato soup. This may have been the literal best soup i have had in a long time. It was full of flavour, and so creamy. The croutons added were also a great touch, and it was a decent portion size! Chris had the squid. I'm not usually a fan of it, so i couldn't judge fully, but it definitely had little flavour. The squid seemed hard, and the batter didn't stick at all to the squid. We had to add lemon juice to get any flavour. When we sat for our starters, we were given free venison tarts. I've never had Venison before, but i think this may have been the tastiest thing i have ever eaten. They were crumbly, and so full of flavour. Tasted like the best spag bol you could ever have. Chris had some turkey and stuffing dish, which i didn't think much to. i found it to be relatively bland, and not what i expected. Chris enjoyed it! The amount of vegetables you got given with it though, that was good. Great portion sizes provided here. I was super hungry and ordered their rotisserie chicken. When you walk to the main door, there's a little rotisserie chicken thing where it's cooking them. Smelt and looked delicious, so i had to order it. The skin was super crispy, and the chicken was soft and tender. Definitely one of the best i have ever had. The chips were my favourite kind (fluffy but crispy). The only downside was the "gem salad" served. It had no dressing or anything, and felt very pointless. It was just some pieces of lettuce. I think this would've been paired better with some onion rings, or even a dressed/undressed side salad. It came with a garlic butter, of which i smothered everything in because it was SO tasty! The menu looks amazing, but sadly we couldn't try it all! Some bits are a little pricier, but, it was well worth it. I believe our meals (two starters, two mains, two pints), totalled to around £60. Not bad if you ask me! Absolutely recommend coming here for a meal. I rate this one a 9 out of 10. ABOUT US: Me and my friend, Chris, started Stages of Chris for fun on Facebook. We're now constantly getting recommendations to try out new places in the Lincolnshire area, and review them! I'm writing this as someone who is starting out reviewing food for fun, hoping it helps! Any tips would be appreciated :)

I had not visited prior to this trip. When making the online booking, I did not realise that the terrace wasn’t attached to the building, making it extremely cold and windy. I would not recommend sitting here, unless it is the summer, the heat lamps provide minimal heat. Luckily, they were able to give us an alternative table indoors, but we were limited on time due to the table being needed for another booking. This was not the fault of the six bells, but are error during booking, I feel the website should give more guidance as to what the terraced area is and inform families that it is cold during winter, one of our party members was in his 80s, so it was certainly too cold for us. Putting this aside, our order was taken promptly, and food arrived speedily. The staff were extremely tentative, polite and pleasant. Nothing was too much trouble. My mum is allergic to poultry and usually selects lamb or pork, neither were available on the menu so she opted for beef. Perhaps the menu could have provided slightly more range. Having a small menu, however, meant that the food arrived promptly and was cooked to perfection. I ordered the beef cheek which simply fell apart when cutting, this could not have been cooked any better, and was probably the best beef I have eaten to date, I could’ve eaten this dish again and again and again and again. To start I had the squid, which again was excellent, two others had the soup of the day, which was delicious. The portion sizes were perfect, not too little, and not too much, a free course meal could have been easily finished without feeling too full. Due to the table turnaround time we were unable to order dessert, again, I must specify this was not the fault of the six bells. When the bill was bought over to us, a selection of home-made fudge and truffles were also bought over, as an apology for not being able to order dessert. This was unexpected, but a very pleasant addition which finished off the meal perfectly. I will certainly visit again, and recommend the six bells for anyone, wanting an enjoyable three course meal. We ate early in the evening on a Saturday, which I think was a good decision, as whilst we were leaving, the main pub and bar area has started to get slightly louder, to be expected on a Saturday night.

We meet some friends from Lincoln at the Six Bells about every six months and have never been disappointed, and yesterday was no exception. Although they very busy, the staff were all very efficient and friendly. The food was very good, the menu being quite game based. I had the terrine to start and then the pheasant, both of which were excellent, and finished with the white chocolate parfait, which I have had on every visit. The only downside were the pickled mushrooms which were delivered when we arrived: I had one and it was so highly vinegary that it nearly blew my socks off, but I quickly recovered to enjoy the meal. Highly recommend and we look forward to our next visit.

Visit for a family pre-Christmas lunch. We chose from the Winter Menu. All our food was well cooked. My terrine starter was particularly good, and the amuse-bouche of a venison croquet was a star all by itself. The staff were attentive and welcoming. Wine list looked comprehensive; including some fine wines. Good selection of beers/real ale on tap. Nice also to see a wood burning stove adding to the ambiance on a chilly winter’s day!

We have eaten at this restaurant a number of times, and if I had written a review then I would have given 5 stars. However, our experience on Wednesday was not quite as I had expected. Ambience and service were excellent, but my choice of dishes left me disappointed. I choose “Salt and pepper squid” and the squid seem to have been omitted from the dish, substituted by some fried whisper thin rings. Followed by Beef Cheeks, excellent quality meat, but the other elements were not up to the restaurant’s usual standard. I see from someone else previous review they mention the cost of wine, and would agree it was too high for the wine on offer.

Although we live more than 20 miles from the Six Bell, we had recently heard some great comments about the food so we booked an early table for a Monday night … our plan was to try their Auberge Menu. Upon arrival we received an immediate welcome, and were promptly shown to our table in a warm, tastefully decorated part of the pub. The food was excellent and for me, the Pheasant was spot on .. it was a generous portion as were the accompanying selection of vegetables and it was a big thumbs up from our party of 4. My only negative comment for the evening was the pricing of wine, a little excessive for what it was! Otherwise thanks to all those on duty that evening.

Visited for dinner with my husband, very excited as had heard so many good things about this place. Setting is lovely, pub is beautifully done and very cosy. It was very busy when we got there for our table booked at 6.30pm but that felt like a good sign. I’m not sure if the place has 2 set sitting times because when we booked there was a caveat that the table needed to be handed back by a certain time, which I can’t quite recall but on paper it felt like plenty of time. Once there however it felt very rushed, bread and starters came out at the same time which was weird and I just felt like staff were trying to hurry us along all the time. At one point I placed my knife and fork down to take a sip of drink and the loitering waitress immediately leapt on me to ask if we’d finished, even though I had half a plate of food left and my husband was clearly eating. I had heard so many good things about the food here but honestly it was only ok and very expensive for what it was I felt. Sadly we left feeling disappointed which was a shame as it is a beautiful place.

Sunday lunch was okay but a little disappointing. Friends had tipped us off about the food but they dined in the week. Let me summarize: Service - a bit slow and having waited 20 minutes after being handed the desert menu, we decided to call it a day. They did apologize and offered to serve us straight away but the moment was gone. Staff were friendly and polite. Food - Typical Sunday roast but with watery gravy and too much of it. I guess it's a bit difficult to make a rich gravy when you have three different meats on the menu. Yorkshire pud was okay but was a bit sucked in like a old man's face. Roast taters seemed to have been roasted from raw and not part-boiled to get them fluffy inside and crispy out hence a tad hard on the choppers. Lamb was nice and pink, just how I like it. Would we come back? Certainly but not for mass-catered Sunday lunch. 5 maybe 6/10

Very dissapointed in our last visit to the Six Bells..... Had been looking forward to a great Sunday lunch since we booked last week, but having visited on Sunday, we won't be returning for a Sunday lunch again. They were extremely busy which is a good sign, however the food served i believe suffered for this. A Sunday lunch shouldnt be a difficult thing to do, but when it arrived, although looking good on the plate, it was more style than substance. I ordered the beef and got two fairly stingy slices, which had have been decent beef i wouldnt have minded but two large veins of fat running through it, made it very chewy and unenjoyable. The vegetables on the whole were ok, a nice mix but the roasties were soft in texture (like they had been sitting around for a while) and the yorkshire needed a lot of gravy to soften it up. Finally, the gravy was the biggest thing that let the meal down, it was literally like dishwater, so thin, hardly any flavour and very dissapointing. Should do better Six Bells.......

Tried the Six Bells for the first time and we were very happy indeed. Wood fired Roast Beef and similarly cooked Roast Lamb. Wife had the lamb and crowned it the best she's had in years, my beef was succulent and perfectly cooked, Yorkies were lovely and light, plenty of excellent gravy and a big bowl of vegetables including glazed carrots, parsnips, broccoli, tenderstem broccoli, cauliflower and beautifully sweet roasted onion! House wines were very good, Abbott Ale superb. All this for under £70! Special mention to the staff who are very friendly, can't do enough for you in fact, efficient and knowledgeable which makes it a great atmosphere. In other words this is exactly how a country gastro pub should be run and I cannot award it any less than 5*.

We did received phone call approx 12 days prior to our stay to explain that due to staffing issues, dinner could not now be served after 4.45pm. we had travelled from Cumbria, and knew we would not arrive until around 7pm. We kept our bed and breakfast booking as it was getting too late to find somewhere else to stay. So we had a McDonald's for our dinner!!! We returned back to the hotel to have a glass of wine and coffee. We were very shocked and disappointed to find the whole place locked up except the back entrance to the rooms. Haven’t visited this pub for 40 years but what changes have taken place! Faultless food from the warm artisan bread and butter onwards! We loved the haunch of venison, red wine jus, gratin potatoes and beautifully cooked fresh veg! The service was also exemplary and...

The food was amazing, big portions and I have no idea how they brought such perfectly cooked meals in about five minutes flat. Lovely pub, friendly service - cannot fault it. Highly recommend going; you’ll be glad you did.

Sadly The George doesn't live up to it's reputation these days. We recently ate in the Oak Pannelled Dining room, we had to pour our own wine as the waiting staff seemed oblivious to empty glasses. The roast beef was delicious and the accompanying vegetables tasty. Sadly the cherry chocolate roulade tasted as if it had been bought in (mass produced) & lacked the sour cherry tang and the chocolate was disappointingly insipid. The cheese souffle we had to start was ok, rather overpowered by the mustard sauce. We had to request the biscuits to accompany our coffee. The Christmas decorations were not as opulent as previous years. The waiting team were all pleasant but seemed inexperienced and unable to deliver a high quality service. The bill was not insignificant and did not match the experience. Shame really, because the building is impressive and there is a huge opportunity to enhance the ambience and without doubt the service needs to be elevated. This being said we will most probably revisit in the summer as the outside courtyard is lovely.

The King's Head is good at any time of year. The Christmas singalong is just plain stellar. There are always really unusual guest ales, and even beers brewed especially for the pub. Friendly staff complete the offering. Stamford is full of pubs. The King's Head is some thing special, small but perfectly formed.
