A return to the George after many family visits years ago. Unfortunately the service has declined. We were a table of 4 seated close to the bar. Many staff serving and pouring drinks but not one brought menus or looked in our direction for 20 minutes. I asked for menus but even this wasnt enough to warrant staff asking for our order or speaking to us to let us know they were busy. The George, once known for its impeccable service is no longer the George that I remember.

We didn't stay here our stop was mainly for dinner. We had our dinner in one of their food areas called " The Garden Room" which is a less formal restaurant but still offers a comfortable setting for dining. We went for dinner in mid November and the restaurant was decorated with Christmas trees and lights which was a good touch. Service was great and staff always made sure we got everything that we needed. We ordered fish pie and sea bass which was well cooked and delicious. For dessert we had sticky toffee pudding and cream caramel which was okay. I found dessert quite expensive but what was given. Once you pay higher value you expect some decorations or added value food. Overall I enjoyed it.

Stupendously good lunch. There were six of us and we were all bowled over by the exceptional service, warm welcome across the hotel and absolutely delicious food. Every one of us was impressed by the quality, taste and presentation of our dishes. Even though the bread and butter are great don’t waste your appetite on them, save every tastebud for a culinary journey to delight the senses. Thank you for a memorable afternoon; we’ll certainly be back!

Starter very good, duck well was certainly not a breast, cheese 2 tiny pieces of brie that wouldn't cover the biscuits when asked for more cheese please, again not enough to cover a biscuit. Don't get me wrong the food and service good however please have warm plates for your beef and the crepes putting them on a cold plate then made them cold.

Very classy lunch in the Oak Room. Pre drinks in the lounge with a fire going and well liked after by the plentiful and helpful staff. We had the prix fixe menu of roast beef from the trolley. It was spectacular to look at and superbly presented. Very nice accommodation planting vegetables. Only complaint was the price of a simple coffee after the meal - £6.20 is pretty ridiculous. Otherwise a really pleasant meal and afternoon. Thanks also to the 2 young ladies who were serving that day. They were very bright and respectful.

I first ate at this Restaurant in the mid 1950s, when my Father was staying at The George for over a year; on business. I have eaten there very many times since then, as I like to visit this Restaurant, whenever I am in the area. Obviously the Menu has changed but little else. They still have a Silver Trolley to serve traditional Roast Beef servings, carved at you table. Also Dover Sole and Crepes Suzette also served and prepared, at your table. The character of the room is traditional and restful. A few electronic gadgets added and sadly the loss of tablecloths but you can still hear yourself speak. The very attentive and professional Staff still exist and nothing is too much trouble for them, to give you a trouble free experience. There is a very wide choice of traditional and Vegetarian/Vegan food available on the interesting and varied Menu. An excellent Wine List compliments the food on offer. I can strongly recommend this Restaurant to those who like traditional and/or romantic dining. I have a friend who tried to buy this Venue 9 years ago, so learnt a lot about The George, at that time, that I didn't already know and it is great to see it thriving again after the Pandemic.

Booked The George for my wife’s birthday and seated in the Oak Room outside under the canopy. A really nice area to be, turned cold and the heaters were put on (July), another great British summer! It was slow service from the start, or very long intervals between getting a menu, to ordering etc. none of us had starters and was an hour from sitting down to getting our mains. Good that everything is cooked fresh, but suggests that lack of staff and chefs cooking? We had some nice ‘pickies’ after a while with our drinks and had two roasts, lamb, skate wing and lobster Thermidor. Couldn’t fault any of them. All very nice and hot. For desserts we had a selection inc profiteroles and crepe suzettes cooked at the table. Then the staff kindly brought up a little cake for my wife’s birthday with a ‘Roman’ candle. Nice touch and thought. The food was all very good, service was slow throughout. Courteous and friendly but slow. Prices have definitely gone up. Two course meal for 5 with a few drinks £400! Would still return for a special occasion. Enjoy

An absolutely beautiful old building offering lots of different areas to sit and relax. Amazing decor, ask about the bas-relief in the reception area and the wall painting done by the same artist. Very friendly and helpful staff who helped carry our heavy bags to the second floor. Plenty of parking outside and a very easy walk into Stamford. My only comment about the room would be that it is disappointing that tea/coffee making facilities are not provided. However, the complimentary tea and paper in the morning were much appreciated. We had the roast beef for dinner which melted in our mouths, the best we have ever eaten and would highly recommend. Also the Severn and Wye Valley smoked salmon for starter. However, our breakfast was a little disappointing. The porridge was a little lumpy and the toast was rather overdone. However, the mixed fruit and creme faiche were delicious. Breakfast is served in The Garden Room in which there is a range of flourishing and healthy greenery. We met the lady who maintained the hotel plants and I complimented her on her skill and results around the hotel.

We had never been to Stamford before but we were not disappointed. Whilst had lunch before at the George before, we had never eaten at The Oak Room before. What can we say, the menu was fantastic, the food and service was superb and we were made feel very special. The only very minor criticism was a gent without a Jacket was allowed to dine there. Atmosphere and accoutrements were regal! Service was good with young servers. Entre appetizers were a nice touch and tasty. Several of us ordered the prime sirloin roast which was very chewy, undercooked, tasteless, and disappointing along the roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding, and mixed vegies. The chocolate brownies were chewy and stale. Ice-cream was very good. The George is living on its reputation with stunning dining room and not its culinary excellence. My advice, find a new chef!

A very pleasant ad-hoc visit the The George. The staff very friendly and professional. The atmosphere within the hotel is relaxed and calming. The building is very old and some of this translates into the decor in the rooms; or at least ours; whilst to a good quality and standard the decor was of olde world style, such as some of the pictures on the wall. This did not detract from the stay as the room was well equipped and the bed very comfy. Perhaps more importantly, there was working air conditioning in the room which was very welcome and impressed us a building this old had air conditioning. Jackets for men were requested for the main dining room, which I did not have as it was an ad-hoc stop. I wish I had a jacket as we would have liked to try that restaurant as well, but no issues and I appreciate the desire to keep a certain dress code. There was another restaurant within the hotel which catered to a more casual dress code. The food in the ‘garden lounge’ - think that’s what it was called, was excellent and well presented. Service was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient at both dinner and breakfast. Breakfast was a pure served affair- no buffet- which I find excellent. Having a choice of breakfast and have it brought to the table enhanced the feel of luxury rather than a self service style. Will be staying again and highly recommend. There is also a large car park as part of the hotel.

My wife and I had a special Valentine’s dinner at the George last month. The service was excellent and the ambience of the small dining room was very good. However, the food was very poor. The seasoning and the flavours were very weak, and every course was disappointing. It was extremely expensive, but certainly not worth the money. I had wanted to visit The George for many years, and I was left with a very bad impression. I really can’t understand why it was fully booked(and in fact oversubscribed). A very disappointing visit. We booked a superior room that turned out to be directly above the bar (which was ok as it didn’t stay open too late). The room however was uncomfortably hot. The air con units weren’t working as staff explained they only work in the summer! The towel rail in the bathroom was on full and couldn’t be turned off (we asked but they said they can’t be individually adjusted). The only option was too open the secondary glazing and hoist open the window. This wasn’t a permanent solution as we were looking into the street, it was raining hard and the traffic noise was highly disruptive. The guest wifi didn’t work in the room (I asked staff to confirm and they suggested I use my phone downstairs only). The 5G network is poor so as a result there is no internet available in your room. No where near good enough given the price charged for the room.

Didn't stay here although it looked very nice. Had dinner in the restaurant that proved expensive and very disappointing. The smoked Grimsby haddock and quail scotch egg turned out to be half a quail egg and the haddock was a tablespoon of sauce that didn't even taste remotely like haddock. The biggest thing was the price at £18. The main course steak was tough and rubbery, one of the worst steaks ever been served to me and yet charged at around £46 !!! The restaurant manager was aware of my disappointment yet his attitude was one of total disinterest. The rest of the staff were very pleasant. Not a good experience and would definitely not eat there again.

It never fails to - please and delight! We had a family gathering to celebrate a big birthday and enjoyed the lovely ambience of The Oak Room Restaurant. The hotel itself was bustling with people in a pleasant atmosphere but in the Oak Room, there was a calm and although initially we had the dining room to ourselves, by the end of the meal several tables had clients. Whilst there is a good broad menu to please, the roast beef was the preferred choice, served at the table in traditional style and medium rare to my liking. To finish I enjoyed the crepe suzette. There was no need to order a starter and small pastry appetisers were provided before the main dish; furthermore the pricing structure for a two course meal (main plus sweet) is good value. Our family mainly chose roast beef but our vegetarian member was not disappointed with her choice either. I can't wait for the next occasion - thank you!

Xmas Eve was magical and as always beautifully decorated. But. Expensive. But that's what you expect. It's not meant to be cheap in there. In context- £20 total for a mineral water (£3.95 a small glass bottle), small (125ml) glass of house white wine and a pint of Stella Atois. Did not eat here, but "starters" ranged from £12.95 to £18 and "light bites" were £15 upwards. From the brief glance I saw of a table menu. Very busy, service was slow waited 20 minutes to get drinks but the stewardship was polite and patient and served customers with grace, just not enough staff to cope, not their fault and everyone waiting was courteous and patient. Downside was the overwhelming amount of dirty glasses and plates with leftover food everywhere in the York Bar. I saw one waiter all evening attempting to clear the tables and he looked exhausted and although remained polite and helpful it was obvious that he hadn't had a break. It's very difficult during the festive season, to manage so many people, but for the George, I was shocked at how unkempt the tables were and it wasn't the nicest thing to see on entry. However, that aside, it's a lovely atmosphere everyone is warm and welcoming, and people watching is really good!

Location great. Everything else…. Not impressed. The service is incredibly slow. The first time it was busy so that understood that maybe they were understaffed but went when it was quiet again to give them a second chance. Still no better! Took 45 mins to even get a waiter to come and take out order. Then we find a half eaten dead rat on the floor under our table. The moved us to the bar area and didn’t offer anything to apologise for the inconvenience. waiters seemed like they were wanting to help etc etc but then run away and never came back to us with our queries. So just left us and no respect in coming back to us. It just felt they never cared! I’m just really disappointed with the service and how everything was handled. We gave them the benefit of the doubt the first time but second time was no better and the same poor standards. Do not recommend at all! And won’t be giving them another chance.

So I’ve been coming to the George for years. Known as a prestigious establishment within Stamford that upholds strong values and the need to cater for everyone. I come on Christmas Eve for a few drinks with friends and am met by three requests that cannot be fulfilled. The first is that they no longer sell cigars. Granted that isn’t very important but the George has been the only place that sells a prestigious item. Secondly I ask for a mulled wine of which this amazing establishment has “run out”, can’t make any more at 7pm and had no plan to make any more. Thirdly, I ask for 10 baby Guinness, the answer from the bar staff is… “sorry we can’t because it’s not on the menu” the response from the hotel manager is that we can but not today. So what is it? It’s either not on the menu? Or not today? Bear in mind that the bar is not busy and the staff certainly are not busy. This alone completely undermines the ethos of the George, to cater for everyone’s needs. I’ve been coming here for years and I can honestly say I won’t be coming here again. The service is shocking. And for the price you are paying you expect an extra level of care and experience

We had our Christmas Dinner in the Garden Room. The service was a bit slow to begin with but was fine once they had taken our order. We had a variety of starters. I had the French soup and was pleased that I did, as some of the other starters were quite large. The soup was flavoursome but not overly spicy or hot. Again we had a good variety of mains. The burgers were truly large but I had the haddock and chips. The fish was well cooked and served with what seems to be a homemade tartar sauce. The chips were the semi chunky type and were lovely.

I had specifically driven to Stamford on a research mission, because I was planning a surprise weekend away for a family group celebration. I went straight to The George Hotel, and ordered myself a coffee (in the room at the front right of the building). However, it took nearly half an hour and more than one prompt before the single cup of coffee arrived. No explanation given for delay, or apology offered. I was intending to ask for details about the facilities the hotel offers it’s guests after my much needed coffee, but the indifference shown to me as a customer made me decide not to bother. It may well be different in other areas of the hotel - but unfortunately I won’t be reserving any rooms to find out.

Truly a 4 star its reputation must precede it as soon as I walked into reception I knew this place was special , the hotel staff were impeccable and couldn't do enough for you the rooms comfortable the bed so comfortable the bathroom modern no tea and coffee in the room it is brought to your room as is an early morning newspaper from 5am two restaurants one formal and one not I was on business and not suitably attired for formal dining nonetheless the other restaurant suited me personally the food served hot on warm plates check out the menu online ,outside dining for afternoon tea from what I saw was very popular I would definitely plan a trip back there on a personal stay

Great sandwiches at the George. We popped in there about 3 hours after we'd had a substantial Sunday breakfast so no one was starving. We went into the bar at the front of the building and all ordered a sandwich and drink. I had the roast beef and horseradish sauce, this came on brown bread with masses of pink perfectly cooked beef, salad and home made potato chips, stunning. My dining companions had smoked salmon, crispy bacon and brie and avocado, mozzarella and pesto sandwiches. Each one was crammed full of filling and beautifully presented. The staff were efficient, friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended.

We ate here twice in our 4 day stay. The food was delicious, the staff friendly and helpful. The service was exceptional! Prices were very reasonable.

Not as good as it once was. We visited pretty frequently over last ten years. We even supported them through lockdowns and all the challenges that brought. It's simply not as good as it was. Menu hardly seems to change. The service isn't as good and sometimes the food isn't great yet the price keeps rising-eye wateringly so. I must admit that The Haycock at Stamford seems to top here now which is a great shame as it was our favourite and special occasion go for bigger celebrations too.

I have enjoyed being a customer at The George Hotel for a considerable number of years…I’m sorry to say my recent experience was poor. I was greeted by Hannah in reception who appeared to be extremely bored in her job and totally without charm. The establishment is not what it used to be in terms of poor value, service and ambience. The Oak Room Restaurant in particular has gone ‘down hill’ in both value and quality. I had a starter of three minuscule scallops at the extortionate price of £24.50, followed by rubbery Beef Wellington encased in limp flavourless pastry, rather pricey vegetables added to the cost. This was rounded off with a particularly stale desert ‘The George Trifle’ which had been prepared well in advance, possible days in advance. We won’t be returning ! More disappointment to be had at breakfast , overcooked rock hard poached eggs, poor quality bacon and sausage left a lot to be desired. The coffee was also poor quality and bitter. Overall exceedingly poor value and sadly my last visit toThe George Hotel.

Have just returned from a splendid Luncheon at this fine restaurant within The George Hotel, Stamford. I haven’t been for some time but shall be returning when in the area. Fabulous food from such an extensive Menu and the experience is made complete with Katie and the team overseeing everyone’s needs. Highly recommended

I booked for an anniversary Sunday lunch and the food was excellent. I knew that the drinks would be expensive and due to the occasion did not mind paying but £7.50 for a measure of Bombay Sapphire, £3.50 for a mixer and £14.50 for a 175ml glass of Sancerre was a bit hard to swallow……excuse the pun. We finished our lunch with a cafetière of coffee for two at £13.00. Again the experience was enjoyable but £200.00 for lunch was a bit excessive. Lovely food and good service.

A fantastic evening spent dining in the Oak Room. The service was second to none and the food was exquisite. The George is a very special place indeed. After many visits it really does get better every time. If you have never had the pleasure of staying at the George Hotel, you really must, and in December it makes it all the more special with all the decorations & magical festive atmosphere. Already looking forward to our next visit.

Another absolutely fantastic lunch at The George. Food and drink was sublime. Service and attention to detail of the staff was exceptional. Brought some very important clients along too who were just as complementary. Superb place!

It has been sometime since I have visited this establishment what with Covid etc, however I had a very nice light lunch in the Oak Room, which consisted of a salmon and cream cheese sandwich, with trimmings and chips, washed down with nice coffee and soft drinks. I noticed that the dreaded Lincolnshire Poacher sandwich is still on offer ( readers may have noted my previous reviews on this over priced cheese sandwich). When I last posted a review the manager stated it was their best seller! This was probably due to my continued slating of said item that visitors felt compelled to try it for themselves. Will visit again but not for the cheese sandwich.

Absolutely perfectly lovely every time, one of the very few places to offer a superb, priceless, brilliant service - how dining should be. It’s not cheap, and it shouldn’t be - cannot wait to go again.

I cannot fault the service at the Oak Room. We booked dinner during our stay. Two of our party had the roast beef which was carved at the table. My husband requested it cooked a little more which was no problem at all. Delicious quality...

The King's Head is good at any time of year. The Christmas singalong is just plain stellar. There are always really unusual guest ales, and even beers brewed especially for the pub. Friendly staff complete the offering. Stamford is full of pubs. The King's Head is some thing special, small but perfectly formed.
