Simply Greek in Edinburgh, City of

Don't get me wrong. I like the food. I love the decor. Staff nice, but sometimes you can ruin things by trying too hard. I have never in my life had a meal where they came so often different staff determined to take another thing away, another plate/glass /bottle every minute. I hoped to use the sauce to dunk the pitted bread in. No, it was snatched away. We were talking about our Greek holidays and I was about to look again at the drink bottle and talk about where it came from- but it was whipped away like magic, my jaw dropped watching it go. Please no need to interrupt our meal, continually taking away things. I wanted to just relax at the table and enjoy the company of my friends without rushing. Perhaps they had a drastic shortage of crockery in the kitchen, or staff with too much time on their hands, or too many staff. Chill please! Let the table be covered in a meal until people have definitely finished, like they do in Greek restaurants!

Fantastic restaurant. The food and atmosphere are brilliant, the service is great and it's incredibly good value. A dose of the Aegean in central Edinburgh - what could be better?

The food was truly amazing!!!!! If you like Greek food then you will love this place. Everyone was so kind and sweet there. I will say they fill up really fast during peak times (because they’re that good) so be careful of that and maybe try for a reservation.

Amazed by the quality of the food. Best Greek restaurant in Edinburgh. If you want to experience good Greek cuisine this is the place. Plenty selections of traditional foods. Not to forget the deserts. Portokalopita was mouth watering. I will definitely go again and recommend the place.

Loved this little gem of a restaurant in the heart of Edinburgh. Dimitri and his staff were very friendly and accommodating. They have an excellent selection of cocktails, wines, beer and cordials. We started with a selection of dips and homemade hot pita .2 of our group of 4 are fussy vegetarian eaters and even they were impressed by the quality and presentation of the food. My friend and I who are meat eaters were equally happy with the Moussaka and Mossaraki Kokkinisto (beef stew slow cooked with mashed potatoes) and split a side of pork and chicken skewers. We finished with a couple of shots of Metaxa (greek brandy) and left very happy.

So glad we tried this place. Food was delicious, one of the guests I was with said it was the best greek she'd ever had. Lovely venue and staff. Look forward to returning

Expensive for what it is. The food was average. Service was below average, they forgot about us for a long time and once they served us they hadn’t brought our drinks for a long time.

Excellent food. Tasty and delicious! Meatballs were fantastic. We got a range of dips and loved the aubergine and tzatziki. Grilled chicken skewers fantastic too. Moist and flavoursome. Highly recommend this gem of a restaurant!

Wanted to love this place but unfortunately left feeling that we won’t come back. The staff are all very friendly and the service was good, the food we ordered was good and they definitely don’t scrimp on the portions but the time allocated at the table is dreadful. Our reservation stated that we had the table for 1 hour and 45 minutes, not great but adequate, after 1 hour and 10 minutes we were advised that we had 20 minutes to finish up, 10 minutes later another member of staff advised us we had 10 minutes to finish up, a couple of minutes later yet again we were told it was time to go. We had already settled the bill and were glugging down the wine in an effort to get out, around us were tables of people who had been in when we arrived and seemed to be happily enjoying their drinks. I realise that restaurants have to turn tables but little over an hour more akin to fast food joints than a restaurant. If you want a quick bite to eat before the theatre then you’ll probably be happy with the speed you’re expected to eat, if you’re coming here for a meal and social occasion then, like us you’ll feel a bit cheated with being under the stopwatch.

We visited as an early birthday dinner for myself. I have been before and both times have been amazing! The staff were so accommodating as I currently have a broken ankle so using crutches and they we’re so quick to ensure we were at a table that was close enough to the entrance/toilets! The birthday card and cake were also such a beautiful touch and we cannot wait to return again! Thank you so much!!

Nice Greek food, but not the best in the city. Higher prices than other Greek restaurants and overall appropriate service. The decor is quite nice. Lost one star due to adding a 10% tip automatically to the bill. It should be up to the customer to decide whether to tip or not and not up to the restaurant.

We had a brilliant night celebrating my husband’s birthday! The staff were wonderful, the food was spot on, and the atmosphere was fantastic. We were really well looked after from start to finish. It was such a lovely touch to find a birthday card waiting for us on the table when we arrived. Everyone had a cracking evening, thank you so much!

Really good atmosphere, really tasty food, it was quite expensive for the amount you get though, we had to order meat, salad and bread separately, I think a few options with everything all together would be good. They also forgot to bring our bread but they were very good about it and reimbursed us the cost.

Delicious, good service, amazing find! Particularly recommend trying their feta margarita. Plenty of gluten free options, with no reaction from a symptomatic coeliac.

Tasty food and nice atmosphere. Good range of gluten free options marked on the menus. Fries are cooked in a dedicated fryer and they advised they’d take steps generally to avoid cross contamination which was great! No GF desserts unfortunately. Would visit again!

I have to edit my review as things have changed since my initial review. - The food remains somewhat tasty. - The new place is nice. - Prices are ok. The reason on my downgraded review is that this place is nothing close to what it used to be. - The menu has changed. I am not a fan of ordering greek food without any sides with it. You now need to order separately. - There is no gyros anymore. Obviously this one is subjective. I am Greek and I really loved gyros in Simply Greek. So I prefer other Greek restaurants for that reason alone. - It looks that they decided to take a more glamorous approach for the place which I am not a fan. - Few mistakes with my order but that happens. Final verdict: I don’t think I am coming back any time soon as long as the place stays this way. There are other Greek restaurants that actually have gyros and the rest of the menu is similar if not better. Unfortunate but yeah. I hope though that Simply Greek will find its way. The people that owns it are nice.

Absolutely loved the food in this lovely Greek restaurant. The keftades were the most delicious koftas I have ever eaten. The chicken thigh main was superb. Fabulous service, nice, clean restaurant and great value. Will definitely return. Thank you.

Awesome and authentic Greek restaurant! The waiters were really nice and friendly. As a vegetarian we mostly had cheese based mezze. That's where I would love to habe plant based "meat" alternatives. Drinks were super cool and tasty too! Thanks for having us!

Walked past and looked good so went it. Brilliant little find. Welcoming staff, nice and clean decor. Lovely menu and the food did not disappoint. Several salads and a couple of meat dishes. All excellent. The aubergine and beetroot salad deserve a special mention.

In short, great friendly customer service and amazing Greek grill!!! We had the chicken gyros and mixed grill as well as dolmadakia (rice in vine leaves). Well portioned and deliciously grilled!! We left with happy tummies and will be back again as there were a couple of interesting dishes to try. They have a bright interior with lots of Greek features - love it

A nice experience. Food was good - we had the mezzes. Good for vegetarian food with good choice and surroundings. Good service. Reasonably priced,albeit the wine is expensive - but the Greek wine was surprisingly good.

Came here for my birthday, never felt more special before in my life! No embarrassing songs, but the staff went out of their way to ensure I enjoyed my time!! The food came slowly. They didn't have the chicken gyros, so I decided to order the pork one. The portion size was good, but the meat quality was not. It was 90% fatty "meat". I didn't feel well after eating it. I've had gyros many times in Greece and other places in Scotland, but it just can't compare. Also, I wasn't pleased that the ouzo was served with so much ice. I prefer to add it by myself. Probably I will not be back.

Food was absolutely delicious - best Greek food I've had in Edinburgh! Nice atmosphere and polite staff. But I'm put off going back as they rush you out after only an hour and a half. An hour and a half is not enough time to enjoy a proper meal out somewhere - this is supposed to be a nice restaurant, not fast food.

Food and service was excellent, but very disappointed that this restaurant's 1.5 hour policy was only mentioned when we were finishing our mains. It was like having a bucket of cold water flung over us. We felt very unwelcome. I cannot understand the logic of this policy, as Simply Greek missed out on our dessert and coffee order, which we had in a lovely Italian across the road. Has put me off ever coming back, despite the excellent food and service. What a shame for the hard working staff, that they are let down by such an idiotic policy!

We had an amazing meal at this lovely Greek restaurant! The gyros and halloumi wraps were packed with flavour, and the flogeres and kolokithakia tiganita were crispy and delicious. The tzatziki was fresh and creamy, while the aubergine salad and the mpougiounti were a flavourful highlight. Don’t miss the pastries – they were the perfect sweet finish! The cocktails were creative and well-made, and the staff were friendly and attentive, making the experience even better. A must-visit for Greek food lovers in Edinburgh!

Amazing theme on the interior. We had the chicken gyros wraps (just in time before they sold out) and they came out extremely quickly. Food and service was great. Unfortunately got billed someone else’s more expensive bill but staff was apologetic and resolved quickly.

We have visited the restaurant today (we didnt book and although they were fully booked, they have been able to accommodate us with a short wait at the bar), the food was so delicious (chicken skewer and chicken gyros). The tzatziki sauce was yummy. The atmosphere was very good and the staff friendly. The only downfall is that there was no small side greek salad. It would have been too much for us to order a big one so we didnt but would have been nice to have a small option.

First time visiting Simply Greek and as a Greek in Edinburgh I had to see by first hand. The positives . Great atmosphere and service ( Athena was one of the best servers, really felt cared for and she was very efficient. Loux cherry soda : I really missed that flavour. Food was very tasty and quality was excellent , very close to the flavours back home. The only thing that left me with a a question mark was the portion size . Was expecting bit more on the plate for the price. Very pleased overall , Will definitely visit again

Was visiting with a group of friends and we got to try a large variety of dishes that were recommend to us by the waiter, everything was super fresh and very tasty, the waiters also were very kind and friendly. Next to the theatre as well, which makes it a great choice for a pre-theatre dinner, we will be back.

Honestly disappointing. Dinner for two. Gyros, vine leaves, amongst some other stuff. Vine leaves tasted like they were straight out of a can. I eat vine leaves all the time; these were poor quality, tasteless. Presentation was ok but did not make up for the lack of taste. Gyros was ok but over-seasoned and greasy. Think takeaway style, not restaurant. Service was good. Staff were polite. However what really, really ruined it all was the way the final bill was handled. Service charge was added to the bill without my knowledge: I was not shown the receipt, and the staff member just put the card machine in front of me, ready to tap, with the value already entered in. Bill had not been handed to me at this point. It was only when I asked to see the bill (rather than just tap the machine) that it became apparent a 10% charge had been added to the bill without my knowledge or permission. This is completely dishonest and underhanded. I would have been happy to tip for the service but in this case I asked the service charge to be removed as, as a matter of principle, this should be for the customer to decide, not the restaurant. If you want to put 10% automatically onto everyone’s bill then increase 👏 your 👏 prices 👏 - and in the meantime, stop trying to hide the fact that you’ve added the charge onto the bill. Be up front. Be honest. Explicitly ask the customer if they wish to tip for service. Stop taking that decision away from customers. On this basis I will not be returning to the restaurant. Very disappointed. tl;dr: Please stop with this ridiculous nonsense of automatically adding service charges, at least for a party of two. Ask your customers whether they want to add a tip. Want to pay your staff better? Put it in the cost of your items.

My daughter and I had a lovely evening here. The staff were really friendly and the service was great, we were early for our booking but they were very accommodating and found us a table . The food was delicious and very reasonably priced . What a lovely welcoming relaxed atmosphere, too! I would definitely recommend visiting.

Excellent service! Food was authentic and delicious! Decoration inside mimicked a little terrace in Santorini which was like a little escape from Edinburgh. Would highly highly recommend! Good value.

Updated since they moved location. They place has moved from its original location on Leith Walk, the food and menu is very different. The wine menu has ridiculous prices now for half decent wine, food is fine but way overpriced. Atmosphere is weird. All the reviews that are five stars are from the previous restaurant mainly and not for the new location so be aware! Old review: Tasty food with massive portions, would recommend the pork gyros! Good for takeaway or sitting in (no reservations). Lovely staff too! No alcohol served and not BYOB.

Fui aquí un sábado por la noche antes del cine, y no fue una muy buena experiencia. Extremadamente ruidoso y los camareros nos apuran y realmente no nos importa si éramos felices o no. La comida no era horrible. Pero tampoco increíble. Las albóndigas estaban secas y las hojas de vid insípidas Especialmente por los precios, y casi £ 12 por una copa de vino! No estoy seguro de que volvamos.

Authentic Greek food and cocktail bar open all day. Relaxed atmosphere, excellent service, great for families with children. The location is great, just off St James Quarter, no more than a two-minute walk from Picardy Place tram stop. We will certainly go back soon!
