Silver Fish Bar in Rutland

Just had an order of sausage and chips in tray. Very disappointed at the amount of chips. Sausage was dry and crispy. Other lad had chips to and was disappointed at amount he had. Normally have decent food from there so will put this down as new staff or a mistake. Here regular so hopefully better next time.

We heard the fish bar had new owners so thought would give them a try. We weren't disappointed. Very friendly staff. Fish and chips were lovely. Will definitely return.

Ordered a hallumi burger, the attached picture was what was in it. Inedible and rock hard tiny piece of hallumi that covered less than half of the burger roll. Mushy peas inedible and fish not much better. Do not waste your money on going there.

The fish was amazing, also really enjoyed the chips, also big portion. Have been back since and tried the sausage in batter was also really good.

Twice I’ve been here 1st I ordered fish and chips got home no fish, very expensive chips . Second time I ordered two kebabs with salad got home no salad she also tried to charge me£7,135.30 . I did ask twice if she had my order correct and she even read it back to me but still got it wrong . I had to call and complain , the manager said ‘ what do you want me to do about it’ Won’t be using this fish bar anymore and from the look of all the other reviews I’ve made the right decision .

I was on my way home for a walk around Rutland Water and decided to get Fish and Chips. Stopped by here. Had my mask on, walked through the door and the young girl only about 16/17 immediately put her hand up to me and told me to leave the shop as they were full. No sign, no floor markings but the way it came across was very rude. You do not put your hand up to customers and block them in that manner. She was generally stomping around the shop with a little girl attitude acting I’m the boss cause there were only two people working in there. Finally got in the shop and hardly anything was available. Got served a small cod and chips with a drink and curry sauce and onion rings. Half of the fryers were off and everything was cooked to order - the obvious signs of a thriving business. Got home and the chips were dry, the fish was hard and overcooked, the curry sauce was barely warm. The only nice thing about it was the unopened can of Diet Coke. The chips have been re-fried and the onion rings were burnt and sat in this pool of grease. The staff use about 30 sheets of paper to wrap everything individually - very unnecessary. Paid £14.50 which is very expensive for the shoddy, burnt crap you actually pay for. To think I’m paying for their wages makes my blood boil. Do not go here, you may have to drive some extra miles to get decent fish and chips but it will be worth it than going to this place. Good luck Silver Fish Bar surviving, your customers aren’t coming back, the staff are leaving and the town is disgraced by you.

Dreadful rude customer service again The young very short girl again spoke to me like I was something she trod in. Tuts when you haven’t made your mind up yet. Doesn’t say thank you and is just rude 4th time in a few months. The management are rude also but the young lads are great but look terrified of the women. It’s very sad to see. Do not go here

Rude owner!! Was made to feel uncomfortable, food wasn’t to a good standard either... walked away feeling quite upset of the lady’s manner.

Food is terrible, all very dry. Chips are over done, dry and hard. No flavour and can't even seem to heat up a.pukka pie. worst chip shop I've been to. portions vary a lot in size also.

I have been going to silver fish bar now for over 15 years and the last couple of years it has gone really down hill, the care seems to have gone and the food is poor quality. Last night was by far the worst I've had, chips were dry, pie was completely dry and the fish was very thin and hardly battered. The prices have rocketed over these last 2 years and the quality has plummeted. Will not be returning which is a shame as it's the only one in Uppingham.

We’ve had loads of fish and chips during the pandemic but haven’t had any from Silver Fish Bar for years (stayed closer to home and had pub takeaways). As we were passing by today we decided to treat ourselves! In contradiction to the last 2 reviews, ours were lovely. Still fabulously hot by the time we got home (5 miles) and substantial portions (had 2 fish and one large chips when we could have got away with small chips). We won’t leave it so long next time.

I am disabled due to a bomb blast injury and use a walking stick. In addition, I have dispensation for wearing a face mask.I ordered fish and chips and told the young girl serving that I unfortunately didn't have a mask.I was ordered by her to "STAND OVER THERE" in an abrupt and offensive manner. I complained about her awful stance and told her to "show some respect please but I will wait outside" The food was then passed through the top window to be which I could hardly reach with my injuries. The food was pretty much inedible due to the fish all stuck to the paper and greasy chips. If my children ever behaved like this I would be so ashamed. Looking at the other customers reviews its clear that this individual should NOT be working in a customer facing role.

I wrote a review back in Sept last year about how awful the chips were!sharp ends,whole chips not cooked in middle and other pieces overcooked as just the ends of potato.Absolutely tasteless.Tonight we thought we would try again but again the same issue.My husband took them all back and spoke to them and had to leave them on the counter.We are quite limited in Uppingham but should expect more of the only chippy in town.Will not be using again.Ps they made me put a rating and couldn't give less than 1.it should be a minus 5 in my opinion.

You'll go a long way to find a better chippy than here; everything's freshly cooked and the fish is huge...fantastic!

Nice fish and chips. Convenient location. Have used this place around 6 times. We are new residents in Uppingham so nice change to walk to a local chippy. Disappointing on one occasion when ‘large cod’ was clearly a medium size. Haddock ordered previously is genuinely large. Chios are excellent. Regular size more than enough for two people with some leftover for dogs too !

I was shocked when I heard the female manager shout at a young gentleman who worked for her out in the kitchen are at the rear. She then came out to the serving area and shouted in front of a full shop “this is why I’m the manager I can’t trust anyone “ praise in public not tell off. This is the sign of a bad manager not a good one. The guy who she was telling off looked horrified and so did the rest of the shop absolutely disgusting she should be ashamed of herself!!

I asked for breaded haddock but was told they could only do breaded plaice (Strange) Reluctantly I accepted the last piece of battered haddock left on display together with chips The haddock was dry and tasteless. I suspect cooked a couple of hours earlier and the chips dry and overcooked (In my opinion a suspect they had been recooked I will not be going back there

We came here for lunch the other day. It was pretty quiet, the staff were friendly and service was pretty quick. What made this place stand out for me was the way they dealt with dietary requirements like it was no big deal. I'm vegetarian and my wife has a gluten allergy - it's so rare for us to find a down-to-earth chip shop that we can both eat at, let alone have some choice...! I had halloumi burger and chips, my wife had GF battered cod and chips. Not much seating so we took out to eat in the park nearby. Would certainly go again if we were in the area.

Phoned an order through for a group of us on Good Friday. Arrived 10 minutes early to collect it and it was being packed. Very friendly helpful staff and the food was great.

This was very good fish and chips, done quite quickly. The prices were very very good for what you got - highly recommended!

Went there twice recently whilst away from home for a break. The fish and chips are really excellent. Very pleasant and helpful staff. Large number of locals there indicates its popularity. Wide menu beyond f&c too.

This chip shop needs competition, the staff are sultry and tonight’s chips were well overcooked and tasted and smelt burnt toast. Recently I have said never again but keep giving them the benefit of the doubt. Not sure if I’ll go back again but would never recommend to others.Sorry guys you’ve got to up you frying skills and and definitely improve your customer interaction techniques.

A dinner of fish and chips seemed perfect for our first meal in the lovely market town of Uppingham. The only thing that could have improved it, would have been a cold Guinness. Unfortunately, they do not serve alcohol, but fish and chips were cooked perfectly. Going back for lunch tomorrow!

We dropped into a local pub which was full so then drove on into Uppingham where I recalled there was a good fish and chip shop.

Great fish and chip shop in uppingham. Has a large selection of food on offer. Including chicken , pies etc. I would recommend this fish shop.

Visited on Friday night for fish and chips. The young lady serving who I think is the daughter of the owner needs to do some training in customer service . Very rude not helpful, acting like she didn’t want to serve customers . If she is serving I will not go in. On the other hand there is a lad called Gary who is fantastic with customers .

Lovely food and helpful staff. Had a great vegetarian menu and then staff were able to tell us which was suitable for vegans as well. It's very rare that a vegan can go to a chippy and feel satisfied, we certainly were here!! Excellent!!

Called In for food on way home to peterborough. Ordered sausage and chips. Chips were raw and the battered sausage was hard and not fit for eating. Needless to say they went in bin when got home. Shall not be calling in ever again.

I would have to say worst fish and chips I have ever eaten dry fish and soaky batter and a chicken burger that was dry and over cooked and wasn't even put in the bun properly so fell out when I put it on the plate and where do I start on the chips they were terrible one in three chips were raw. The shop needs to train there staff better and learn to cook will never be using them again. Can think of better places to spend my money

Used this chippie for many years and although its still above average, it isn't what it once was, standards have slipped. Food is still cooked freshly to order and portions are generous enough but service isn't as attentive as it once was. Still use it regularly but not as often as we used to, others have upped their game and it isn't the number one any more.

Great tasty portion for 'small' !!!! Served in boxes made food easy to eat out. Would come back when in the area.

Recommended to us by a friend after mentioning that we couldn't find a really good fish and chip shop these days. We don't live locally but now travel regularly on a Saturday to get our fish supper. Very good portions and quality is consistent, which is very important to us. Warm and welcoming staff who understand what customer service is about. I would thoroughly recommend.

Been there several times. Prompt service. Generous portions. Reasonable prices. Immaculately clean. Highly recommended. Be warned - even if you ask for small chips you get lots !

Amigo y yo visitamos el jueves pasado sólo tuvimos un bolsillo de cambio, peladas y fueron sorprendidos nos podíamos permitir chips y probamos los pasteles caseros de pescado (más baratos que los normales). Eran deliciosos y tuvimos añadido de comer en platos y ser adecuada esperó en la mesa. Muy amable y servicial, además la comida increíble. Al salir nos dimos cuenta que llevamos tarjetas de débito, otra importante razón para visitar.

Pensé que me tratan a mí que unas patatas fritas con salsa de curry el almuerzo, así que pasó por aquí. Es caro, pero no me pareció que podía girar y salida porque era el único cliente! Como era de £1. 80 para una pequeña porción de patatas fritas y 90 p para una bañera pequeña de salsa de curry, y tenían una "oferta" para pollo al curry y patatas por 3 libras. 10, pensé que podría también conseguir esa.

Casi £18 por 2 porciones de pescado y patatas fritas, que esta noche estaban fríos, secos y prácticamente incomible. No he estado en este lugar por un tiempo y no puedo entender lo que ha sucedido ya anteriormente fue siempre buena. . Ciertamente no esta noche..

My husband and I popped in here at 4.30pm on a Friday due to a very poor minuscule lunch earlier at a business meeting and whilst waiting for a dinner dance which was 3 hours away until our next meal so this was a last minute filler in for us! Well, what a most fabulous surprise! The place was immaculate (excuse the pun) with a 5 star hygiene rating which you could really tell was worth it. The large fish in batter was absolutely delicious - best I've tasted in a very long time. The Patron told us that its freshly delivered every morning - and you could taste the difference. We sat in and had a great mug of tea with it too. Prices are cheap for what you get and the quality reminiscent of Harry Ramsdens in the good old days when it was excellent ( not like it is now) . On my next visit to Uppingham I will time my journey to make sure I fit a visit in at The Silver Fish even if just for a fish supper at a 10pm late arrival. I live 4 hours away!

Beautiful fish and chips. Large tasty pieces of cod and crispy chips. A huge portion so you need to be hungry.

This is great award winning Fish and Chip shop the food is always good Fish, pies or whatever. The food is really hot so you can like me take it somewhere with a good view

A good fish shop but living in Rutland there is not a lot of choice. You always get a decent potion chips are good but the fish would be better if it was skinned and the batter is average. The kabab is good and sausages are good but again the batter is average. The pukka pie is a pukka pie you can't go wrong with 1 of them. The main down side is the price it cost about £20 to feed a family of 5 in a city I could do it for about £10

I'm not one much for these eatery's but must say this fish bar is by far a great one, me and my partner share as the portions are big

Came her for a fish and chip supper. I live in the town but rarely go in here as the previous owners of the place didn't really do nice chips. We ordered mini fish and chips. The fish was mostly batter and skin, you kind of felt dirty after eating it. The chips were ok so I can't really complain on that part. Service ok, would have been better if they smiles and said thankyou.

Excellent gluten free batter, what a treat! Its served every day without having to pre-order, friendly staff too.

If you want good fish and chips this is the place to go. They are very good at it and service is prompt and efficient. And it is not expensive.

Excellent takeaway fish and chips. We stayed locally in Belton on a 'glamping' break and our hosts recommended this place to us. Lovely perfectly white fish and light crispy batter. Washed down with a glass of chilled white - perfect !!

For a fish and chip establishment in a relatively small town, this place is a real find. If your requirement is for gluten-free fish (I was told that they now offer more items, such as sausages), and you are in the area - or can travel via Uppingham - this is the place. Furthermore, they offer g-f at all times, not just Fridays or evenings.Their food is really tasty, with lovely light, crispy batter and proper chips, whether it be gluten-free or not.As you can see from other recent reviews they offer takeaway and eat-in facilities, and the staff are very helpful and friendly. The food is good value for money.

One of the finest fish & chip shops/takeaways in the country. This review follows the installation of their brand new 'state of the art' fryer, which has improved what was already excellent, fresh food. Their friendly staff make this place a pleasure to visit and we feel fortunate to live less than half a mile away!

We stopped off on a rainy and cold night and ate inside the shop. The young lady serving us was really friendly, cleaned a table for us and brought the food out. We had haddock, chips and peas and scampi (served with a fresh salad & tartare sauce) and chips. The food was freshly cooked, tasted really good and was a good portion. We were thanked for our custom on our way out.Very impressed and worthy of another visit!

I've been buying fish and chips here on and off for over 10 years and have always been very satisfied. The staff are friendly and the food is of an excellent standard. Portions are generous and offer great value for money. There is a small area for dining inside.

We visited after seeing on the Silver Fish website that they offered gluten free fish and chips. My partner, who is gluten intolerant, normally has to pick the batter off the fish, but here could eat the whole lot.The shop was very clean, the service was quick despite the fish having to be cooked from scratch, and most importantly it was very tasty. We ate on the shores of Rutland water, watching the sunset. It doesn't get much better!Well done to the Silver Fish for offering a gluten free option. Would definitely visit again.
