Ship Inn Restaurant in Isle of Anglesey

Lovely location with amazing views but £6:20 for a pint of Landlord( such a bang ordinary beer) in what feels like a cafe. There must be some local breweries you could use so you don’t charge city centre prices! Anyway we took our business elsewhere.

A lovely traditional dog-friendly pub with an excellent selection of food. We visited for late lunch and the staff were really lovely and accommodating. We arrived just before the end of lunch service but we didn’t feel rushed to order at all. We had a fish goujon sandwich, a ham and cheese toastie and a bowl of chips. Both excellent on fresh local bread, really lovely fish and quality thick cut ham, great chips. The pub has recently been taken over and the new owner was very nice. The staff came over to check everything was ok and were very friendly and attentive. The pubs had some bad reviews on trip advisor recently which we found unjustified, the food is as good as ever and the seating arrangements are now more flexible for dog owners and families. A must visit in Anglesey!

Me and the wife always come to Ship inn when we visit Benllech, rain or shine. Its a really lovely pub with great food, roaring fire and i believe it is now dog friendly in the majority of the pub which is great! Special mention to Chris who is very attentive to all customers. Would recommend to anyone who loves a good pub!

We booked a few days earlier with our dog in tow. We arrived after a longish drive in an inclement night. Such a warm welcome. We were one of 3 tables with four footed friends. (So not too sure what to make of some previous reviews. We placed our orders & were somewhat disappointed in that 4 of so of the popular items weren’t available. So no steak & ale pie for me! :-( . Don’t really do beef burgers but gave it a go & wouldn’t rate it highly. When it came to puds on top of our disappointment nothing much to excite & we declined. However the staff were cheerful and in particular Chris was making sure we were happy : if not a tad disappointed. For the chef : cook the chips a bit more, colourless & bland.

I think we went on a bad day for the staff as new till system was in play causing problems and delays. The food was ok but not exceptional and was a bit pricey for what we had. Fancied a dessert but menu was too limited. Lovely setting and great garden to sit in next to water. Felt chilly and slightly gloomy inside and seats a bit cramped. Staff friendly.

Nice to come here for a drink and look over the estuary znot been for food recently but looks nice. Dogs only allowed outside now unfortunately.

Fish and chips cooked too quickly in burnt fat, wet and soggy batter on the inside. Mushy peas over boiled to a purée and frozen chips. Sea food chowder only warm and average. Blonde miserable lady shouldn’t be in customer contact. Cold room with no fire. Should have taken photos.

Food used to be freshly cooked but out food came out within 5 minutes (if that!) of the order going in and you could tell it had just been put in the microwave. Such a shame as we had been here before with lovely food.

We met the new owners of this wonderful pub.We had 2 course meal with drinks and all was excellent. The service was brilliant nothing to much trouble. Good luck we will return later in the year. David and Helen. (Cheshire)

Popped in for a drink on Monday, happened to be the new owners first day. Great welcome from them, we were made to feel very welcome with our two dogs. Being regular visitors we look forward to what they’re will do with the ship inn, always a favourite of ours, but we wish them luck and we will be back

Not as good as it once was and not dog friendly anymore

Visited in March it was quiet, we reserved a table, the food was hearty and homely and very good.

Sad as it’s a very cold time of the year & we have 2 Papillon dogs in a doggy pram, we weren’t allowed to take them in. There apparently was an incident 😢 sitting in the cold for us felt unfair Shouldn’t tie us all up with dog behaviours. It was a trip down memory lane for me 😢

Fantastic location, ample parking for patrons, friendly, courteous and helpful staff, food is top notch. Strongly recommend the "Ship's Famous Dragon Pie"....you won't be disappointed.

Boy behind bar didn’t know what the different ales were like. Not knowledgable staff. Older female member of staff rude. Told to go to different side of bar. View was nice, but not dog friendly. Missing out as we were both hoping to spend a good amount on a nice three course pub tea. Missed out on £80 - went to the Oyster Bar on other side of island instead who wanted our business and were dog friendly. Would recommend them.

Shame it’s no longer really dog friendly. Been here in the past years and deliberately came again because of its half decent food and dog friendly nature. Sadly policy has changed and can now only sit with dogs outside. Think they are mis-reading their main potential clientele!

Was dog friendly, we were looking forward to visit and drove a long way, sadly I was told someone had been bitten by a dog so now there policy is to ban all dogs inside which is also banning their owners as well. I hope they are highlighted this on their website as when we looked it was dog friendly.

I have been visiting this pub for 50 years and have to say it was one of our favourites until now. We visited with our dog today like we always have. You used to be ushered into a back room where 3 dogs were only allowed, today we were shocked to see no dogs allowed inside. Look at the location this pub is frequented by so many people with dogs. 🐶 I dont want to sit outside when it’s raining and windy in the shed after paying over £6 a pint. That’s our custom lost. There are so many dog friendly pubs in Anglesey which we will now visit.

We loved this pub after a long walk On the beach until now. Visited with out well Behaved dog 🐶 and wasn’t allow inside. We have been visiting this pub for 50 years. Dogs used to be accepted in the old toilets which was bad enough, well 3 maximum! Now not allowed inside. Can sit in heated shed not great when windy and wet when paying over £6 pint. We will now take out hard earned money elsewhere.

Well that was disappointing. We've been gazing across at The Ship for a few days whilst staying on the other side of the bay at Llandonna, and thought today being our last full day before returning home we'd drive over with our dogs and treat ourselves to a decent lunch and a couple of drinks. We were sad to see, shocked even, given the economic climate and the time of year, being about as low as the season gets, to read prominent 'no dogs inside' signs posted on the front door. The sign directed dog owners to an exterior 'heated shack' that looked about as welcoming as a slap in the belly with a dead wet fish. We turned away along with at least half-a-dozen other couples, all with dogs, and left to seek an alternative. We ended up returning to our cottage where dogs are welcomed. Whilst I respect the proprietor's right to make a no dogs ruling I find it astonishing that interior space, with hard floor, is not set aside for dog owners. All I can assume is that it makes economic sense to them. As for the rest of us passing by on this famously dog-friendly beach (certainly as it is out of season), whether on wheels or foot on the Anglesey Coastal Path, with our furry friends alongside, and all hoping for a dog and human friendly welcome, I'm afraid the message is: 'GO ELSEWHERE'!

Wonderful traditional pub at Traeth Goch.

Such a shame, that this lovley, cosy little pub on the seafront is great place to eat and/or drink UNLESS you have a dog and it's winter. Then you are ushered to a brightly lit back room which apperently (according to a local) used to be the toilets. They only allow three dogs at a time, so if you have two dogs like us and there are already two dogs in this room. Tough! They do allow dogs outside in a heated area but when it's dark, raining and blowing a gale it's not the most welcoming of places to sit and relax. Most pubs these days allow dogs, but we felt that we were treated like second class citizens. Thankfully, there are plently of other lovely pubs on Anglesey which are genuinely dog friendly.

Exceptional in all areas. Staff so pleasant and polite, food fantastic, ambience, loved it. Can't wait to go back. A real friendly find with wonderful food. Well done to all.

Meal was fabulous. Fish and chips. Large portions that we struggled to finish. Always a lovely atmosphere in and around the place

What a great pub, beer was excellent as was the service, pub was full and the view, probably 1 of the best in the country.

Unfortunately, a baby isn’t allowed to sit for food in the right hand side of the restaurant, although it had many young children who were in there dining. When questioned why, it was said the restaurant was ‘too loud’ and that babies weren’t allowed in there as a car seat takes up too much room, even though there was plenty of room at the table. A very odd response from what is meant to be ‘family friendly’. We left dined in the Boathouse next door, who were nothing short of excellent. Would recommend you spending your money here.

Desperately needing food we visited the Ship, how you can justify charging £5.50 for a small bowl of chips and £12 for a cheese toastie. Lovely pub in a great location but you really are testing your clientele with your prices.

Good food and good value. The food is freshly made, tasty and served by friendly staff. Great place for a Sunday dinner or any other day for that matter.

Drinks only . My ale in a handled glass was spot on and my wife's gin and tonic looked a 'million dollars'.

As others have noted...the access and the parking can be garbage. The first time we tried it was in an August...just don't! Go somewhere else, the stress isn't worth it, just to find nowhere to park crawling with the Me First's at the bottom. Your reward for your descent efforts will then be an aggression riddled climb back out. Try in the Spring or Autumn and you'll find a very different experience. Since our original, all but homicidal road rage filled original visit, we learned to approach differently, even enjoying a healthy to and from walk to Llanddona. It's easier and very quiet. If you can find somewhere to park the walk round to Benllech is fresh too. As for the pub itself?...well...it's the same as thousands of others, fine at most times, a victim of its own success at others. Further endorsement of the Low Season Theory.

This pub is the best on the island. Food is excellent and all the staff are very friendly . The view is amazing of red wharf bay . We have been going here for years and staff are always happy to see us back . Thank you to all the staff . Barrie and emma Holbrook

Been twice last year. And 3 times this year food never disappoints very tasty 😋

Every time we come to Anglesey we always visit The Ship Inn for their Mussels. So this year we set off for a walk and our mussel visit…we got there and we couldn’t get a table inside as we had a dog and they have a rule on how many dogs are allowed in the pub, there was no mussels on the menu and we very nearly had our drink and turned around. However one of the party went to see if there was anywhere warmer we could sit rather than directly outside. Chris, the most friendliest waiter we’ve ever met on the island showed us an area we could sit and we overheard someone saying the dragon pie is the best they’ve ever had. So we decided to stay. The outdoor area was lovely and warm, we ordered food for 13 people and expected it to come out one after another, however it all arrived at the same time. The dragon pie is honestly one of the best hearty meals I’ve ever tasted, it was absolutely delicious and a good size too! No starters are needed, so yes it’s pricey but if you leave out starter then it balances out. After our meal Chris had a good chat with us and really made us feel welcome. All in all, we had a really lovely afternoon out in a great spot with amazing food. The Ship Inn, you’ve got a gem in Chris!

Very rude to me because I park in the car park in a motorhome. Wouldn’t spend my money there.

The fish and chips where the best fish and chips I ever ate.

Very tasty meal on our last night in Wales. We'd booked a table which was ready on arrival, all staff were very friendly and they catered well for my partner who is coeliac. Menu is a little limited but still good stuff to choose from. I had the halloumi fajita and my partner the dragon pie which looked and tasted amazing. Two chocolate brownies to finish left us very full and content. Lovely atmosphere and decor inside. A touch on the more expensive side but would still very much recommend!

The Chilean Sauvignon Blanc at £9.50 a glass is really awful...There is'nt a NZ SB which would be far superior on the "by the glass" list, only by the bottle at £31.00.

They don’t let kids (even quiet polite 11 and 13 year olds) in the main part of the pub and don’t let dogs (placid, quiet Labrador) anywhere except a pokey, cold back room. This pub is an anti social dinosaur of a place stuck in the dark ages. Not family friendly. Did not deserve our custom so we left.

Dropped in during day trip from Liverpool. No reservation. Staff were warm and welcoming and got us a table with no fuss. We enjoyed a fine Ship Inn Veggie Curry, Gammon Steak, and a Beef Lasagna. All very delicious. The Ship Inn is known for its seafood but they truly did an excellent job on our dishes! Enjoyed the experience very much.

Worked out it had been roughly 7 years since I'd last visited the Ship Inn, and I'm glad I came back. We arrived fairly late in the evening as a walk in, but it was no bother - we soon had drinks and food on the table. Only marked down the atmosphere rating because we were in a side room on our own, but that's more down to us not booking in advance. The staff were all very friendly, the food was great (everything home made) as was the Ship Inn ale 🍻 Thank you! Looking forward to my next visit.

First time visitor. Lovely old pub

We had 2 dragon pies and 2 fish chowders. Both were exceptional. Great that they allow dogs in too as many places loose custom by not allowing dogs in. We weren't offered a desert or so didn't bother, loss off a sale there otherwise the service would've been 5 stars!

Only stopped for a couple of drinks as we gad already eaten but wished we hadn't as the food looked delicious. Fantastic location, wish we could have stayed longer. The lady behind the bar was welcoming and friendly, would highly recommend.

A really friendly place in a terrific setting. Great service and good food, have to say the Dragon Pie is worth travelling for ... delicious!

We visited for an evening meal, food was good we sat in a back room as we had a dog with us, so felt a bit isolated from the pub which gave a different atmosphere. The staff member that served us was very good at their job but lacked any personality ( a smile goes a long way ). All in all it was ok. The views in red wharf bay are beautiful you can sit outside and have a drink and enjoy.

We have been here for a meal many times. The food, the service, and the atmosphere are always lovely. I especially recommend the desserts.

Lovely food, the Welsh dragon pie is a must have. We had a great view of the boats while we ate our food. Nice selection of drinks and a friendly atmosphere. Would come again.

Nice old pub, close to the beach, serves food, good views and plenty of seating inside and out. Only downside were the middle-aged bar staff who grumpy and rude, which was commented by others as well as ourselves.Other than that, worth a visit

Had the Sunday lunch, one slice of beef and not very good value for money, we sat outside so we can’t really comment on the atmosphere but the service was spot on.

Amazing location, food was okay, service from front of house and bar was awful though, real shame. Not so dog friendly as it was a tiny room at the back of the bar.

Disappointed. We arrived a little early but our table was ready. We ordered our food and was told your food is on its way. They weren’t kidding! Dragon pie and fish and chips was on our table in 4 minutes and it wasn’t great. I am more than happy to wait for good food to be cooked from fresh. This most certainly wasn’t. We would visit again for a drink but not for good. Very disappointed.

Terrible food, ordered a prawn sandwich, the prawns was bland and had no sauce even though it said it was supposed to have it, the side salad was so ridiculous the bread of the sandwich was just brown bread you buy at the shop no butter of anything on it, it was so dry worst of all it it was £13.90!!! Would of been better to get a Tesco meal deal, we told the waiter how terrible it was and not one person came to ask if we was okay and to voice of concerns, the fish and chips was bad the batter was burnt fish over cooked not nice to taste, same with the burger didn’t taste good the only nice thing that we ordered the lamb pie however 5 minutes after we ordered our food the pie came out and we was waiting 30 minutes for the prawn sandwich and another 40 minutes for the fish and chips and the burger. not worth the price!!!!!

It's a lovely place for fish n chips. It's one of the best fish I've tasted in Wales. Outside seating area, dog friendly & right on the sea front. Small carpark.

The pub was very busy with it being summer holidays but luckily we had booked a table. The service was great and the food was delicious. I had dragon pie, which I highly recommend.

Old fashioned pub that could do with a bit of updating and fixings but the location and views are great. Had the famous dragon pie which tasted better than it looked. Side plate of veg was far from generous but service was good and owner seemed like a decent bloke. This place can get really busy in the summer but as weather wasn’t too great we easily found a table and we’re served quickly.

OMG , what a difference 7 years makes on our last visit here, from Australia with group of 8 for dinner. Greeted with grumpy old man who's staff (all but one) seemed unhappy to be there. Menu nothing special. View and weather was fabulous.

We called in here on an off chance, we were seated straight away, and we didn’t have to wait long (fish and chips with a good dollop of tartar sauce!) Lovely place, and the view is superb.

What a perfect pub!! On the waterside, traditional quirky decor. Gentle music and a lovely, warm ambience. Delicious food (get the dragon pie!) and kids were very happy with pizza and chips 😋. Chris the barman was fab too. Just what we needed after a windy walk, highly recommend!

Odd ordering system when I went in. Order food at one till then go join another queue to order drink. We only had a drink but the food looked good. Good seafood choices. Great views from the outdoor area. Inside looked really cosy.

I came with my family to have some lunch out of the horrible weather, this pub is so lovely, love the old fashioned feel as there isn't many pubs like this now, the staff were really nice and acommadaing to customers coming in, the food was great and was served quickly. We were very impressed. Thank you
